  • First off, I'm sorry for being absent on CZcams for so long! I was having way too many computer issues.
    This video is about my major, what I plan on doing with my degree, and some tips for those thinking about being a psychology major. Of course this isn't everything, just some things I thought was important for me to touch on.

    Sorry this is gonna be a long post, but It’s refreshing to see someone else who is majoring/interested in forensic psychology. Unfortunately, at my school they don’t have it as a major so I had to major in psychology and minor in criminal justice which doesn’t really bother me. It’s hard though because there’s only one psychology professor who has an interest in forensic psychology and I’ve been talking to her but still feel lost. I recently had an internship with a local police department and I was with the forensic team one day and I found out that their supervisor had a masters in forensic psychology and she was like that I’d have to go the clinical route since I wanna work in a prison but I don’t really want to. I just wanna counsel and talk to the inmates and refer them to a psychiatrist rather than giving them medication myself.

    • @kayladanielle2358
      @kayladanielle2358  Pƙed 6 lety +2

      If you’re just going the clinical route you won’t prescribe medicine. Only doctors (I.e psychiatrists) prescribe medicine. That’s the main difference between a psychologist & a psychiatrist. However, you will have to know your psych drugs so you’ll have an understanding of what the medication is doing for them & how it’s doing it.

      Hi Ronika. I found your response intriguing. I am a recent graduate of Social & Criminal Justice minoring in Psychology. It is the opposite of your degree. Very interesting. I am now Mastering in Forensic Psychology, which, in my opinion, is Criminal Justice and Psychology combined. It is tough finding this degree. My college, Northcentral University, just in 2016 began offering this course. I thought you might find this interesting. Many wishes to you in your educational journey!

      Be careful to be a criminal profiler for the FBI you have to become a special agent and the cut off ago for a special agent is 37 and they look for advanced degrees. You also need a clean record and you have to be able to pass their physical

I want to minor in forensic behavioral science (which is apart of sociology) but I'm not sure if I should try to pick something else. I do want to do something similar to what you were talking about. Anyways, I'm glad to find someone on youtube who can provide some insight :)

    if I want to study forensic psychology but the colleges in my area don’t offer it as a major or even as a undergrad program would it be smart to just major in psychology and minor in criminal justice then transfer to a grad program that offers FP once i’m a graduate student? idk if I would benefit from being in a criminal justice class but I really don’t know what i’m doing LOL ( im a senior btw so I need to really figure my life out )

    • @kayladanielle2358
      @kayladanielle2358  Pƙed 5 lety +1

      Minoring in criminal justice would give you an idea of how the legal system works (it’s one of my minors as well). But majoring in psychology & taking classes that are tailored to what you want your specialty to be would be beneficial. So if you wanted to be a cognitive forensic psychologist you would take as many classes as you can in the cognitive field

      I know sometimes the terms are used interchangeably. But it seems like criminal psychology is more focused on why people commit crimes & forensic psychology focuses on them once they’re already in the court system (competence to stand trial, memory & stuff like that)
