I absolutely love this! I can accomplish an enormous amount of work within just a few hours. It's incredible how much more I can achieve compared to the entire day's worth of work that I used to complete in the past. And the best part is, once I finish my tasks, I have the rest of the day to relax, recharge, and prepare for the next day.

I found myself to do this spontaneously whenever I had a deadline due. I'd wake up before alarm clock (sometimes middle of the night after just 3h sleep) and start working for 16h straight with one or two eating breaks. I wonder if I can do this without the stress of a deadline too, so I'll definitely try it out. I have flexible hours so I often struggle getting my day started. Putting alarm on 7.30, waking up at 8, eating breakfast while watching videos, drink a coffee, watch one more video, bathroom break, and it's already 10am. I could've gotten a third of my work done by then.

For those of you that have a hard time getting up:
    1. Set your phone or alarm across the room so you have to get up to turn it off.
    2. Change your alarm to something different and alerting or annoying every week so that you don't get used to it and tune it out or sleep in.
    3. Get dressed as soon as you get up to avoid going back to bed.
    4. Make it a race to get something done before a certain time, like making a coffee before 7am so that you get an adrenaline rush in the morning helping you get up.
    5. DO NOT EVER sleep in, "catching up on sleep" doesn't actually work or exist. If you get up on time you will tire out and go to sleep on time. Some days will feel slow and groggy but when its a habit then you will get good sleep with little effort in the future.
These are things I slowly started to discover helped me get up.

If anyone has tried this method and failed, here is the method that worked for me:
For preparation, turn your water heater up to 127deg. Also, purchase a digital meat thermometer. Purchase some of those light bulbs that can be programmed to dim. Set them to gradually dim from sundown to 10pm, dimmer and dimmer, preferably a blue light to simulate moonlight, until they’re automatically off or just have a single nightlight left by 10:30pm.
Every night at 7-8PM, run a HOT bath. 107-113degrees(check with your meat thermometer)
Leave your phone outside of the bathroom. Get in the bath & focus your mind on the feeling of the hot water. Slowly get used to the heat until you’re submerged to your neck.
While you’re in the bath, just let your mind defragment. Don’t think about anything in particular, just let thoughts arise and observe them. Let your mind wander. This is a natural process of mental organization & compartmentalization. If any strong feelings arise, just notice them.
Do this until you’re too hot to continue. If your face starts to itch, it’s time to get out. 15-25 minutes is plenty. Quickly wash yourself, rinse, & get out.
After your bath, your workday is done. Try to minimize any remaining tasks and rush to get in the laying position. If you eat some food, make it carb heavy. Do not use your phone, do not text or browse, do not consume short form content or CZcams. Put on a movie & call it a night.
In the morning, get some sunlight directly onto your eyes. Don’t stare at the sun, but just make sure its rays are gracing your eyes. If you’re lucky enough to have a window where the sun comes in, that’s perfect. But preferably take a 10 minute walk outside.
That’s all you need. A tiny morning routine and a heavy nighttime routine.

I used to be able to get up, walk to my alarm, turn it off and return to bed without really waking up.
I've always found that catching up sleep does work as long as not carried to excess. If I didn't sleep enough then an extra half hour can make the difference between being too tired to concentrate the whole day and being able to work reasonably well for most of the day.

I am inclined to think that the key here is the planning the night before. You take the time to identify your most important task(s) and plan exactly how to tackle them. You will be able to relax and sleep better. Your brain will be working on the tasks as you sleep. That has to mean you are rested, focused and ready to dive right in.

I used this method for my dissertation during the pandemic, couldn't work during the day and so would start after my evening meal. Would review everything and had made myself a step by step check list that was easy to follow. Once I finished the review & preparation it was quite late so would lay down with my pc next to me, then when I woke I'd see it already and just needed to check 3 things off my list, then I could go back to sleep/power nap before my morning routine alarm where I would get.
This was the only way I could write and consistently got up on time for my routine etc, for months.
Huge for me and only broken cause I had discovered it late and as the deadline approached I panicked, stopped the power nap and then the morning routine to focus on getting it in on time, which of course made me burn out shortly after finishing.

This is brilliant, stumbled on it working from home and just waking up 1 minute before a meeting or something, the only thing I would add is that even if you wear glasses already, don't just stare at the screen when you wake up(especially on the phone), your eyes need to calibrate upon waking, and going into a screen, and being in that rested fresh state, you will focus so much on the screen that you will damage your vision...
So drop into the task, but stare out the window while working, thinking, you need to stare at distant things, the sky, far away buildings, etc. Doing that on and off for about 10-15 minutes will protect your vision.

I procrastinated a 10 page research paper for my english class until I only had 3 days left to finish. I decided that rather than loosing sleep staying up late into the night to work on the paper, I was going to go to bed early and wake up at 5am to work on it. When I woke up in the morning I sat right down in my chair and got to work. I was able to right for hours on end, and really focus effortlessly. It felt like my entire state of being was focused on just getting done this one task. This truly works, and this is also why everyone, whether they know it or not, is a morning person. No matter who you are, If you wake up hours before the rest of the people in your house, and get straight into your work, you will have zero distractions, and you will slip right into flow.

It works as long as it remains a novelty; then wears off. I find all strategies have this curve, and in end I get the work done in spite of strategizing rather than because of it. It's a lifelong conundrum but all you can do, in my opinion, is keep finding and introducing or reintroducing new strategies. No one routine/strategy will universally solve this dilemma.

    @tomijojo Před rokem +2138

Step by step summary for the "fixed" morning routine:
    1. Prepare the night before:
Before going to bed, identify your highest priority task for the morning.
Plan and organize the materials or resources you'll need to begin the task.
    2. Wake up and flow:
Upon waking up, aim to start working within 60 to 90 seconds, while you're still in a half-asleep state.
Engage in your highest priority work immediately, without delay.
Push through the initial struggle and allow yourself to enter a flow state. It may take around 15 minutes to reach a deep flow state.
    3. Maintain a focused flow block:
Dedicate a substantial period of time, ideally 1 to 3 hours, to work solely on your high-priority task.
Minimize distractions and maintain intense focus during this flow block.
Ride the wave of flow, where productivity and effortlessness are heightened.
    4. Transition to recovery:
After completing your flow block, transition to recovery activities.
Incorporate practices that help you recover and boost flow proneness for the rest of the day, such as meditation, yoga, cold showers, or any other activities that provide relaxation and rejuvenation.
    5. Balance and maintain:
Throughout the day, strike a balance between focused work and recovery.
Avoid neglecting recovery, as it is crucial for replenishing energy and sustaining flow productivity.
Continuously assess and adjust your routine to find the sweet spot between a focused work session and sufficient recovery time.

While I'm still re-working my afternoon recovery and work balance, I found as an entrepreneur this has been 100% life changing for me. I used to spend my mornings in a million different endless combinations of walks/meditations/food/hot+cold showers/yoga/exercise/sleeping in/wasting time/having tea but never any actual work until after all the things. Now I wake up, stumble into work + wow... get most of my PRIME work done between 7 and 11 am, and I can meander through the rest of the day feeling 'accomplished' and doing the things on my own time..yoga meditate tea exercise etc... I've edited 5/7 chapters of my book in the past month with this routine, and I've been trying to edit this book for YEARS. No exaggeration. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this and attempted it (I was very leery at first) THANK YOU.

I was going for a walk every morning on waking as per protocol suggested by Huberman, but it always felt like I was squandering energy and "recovering" from sleep, which itself is a form of recovering. On the few mornings where I went right to my favorite café and started working, I felt way more productive and like I won the day. Plus one for this idea!

Finally! A morning routine that makes sense. As a mother of little ones, the only time I have to do deep focus work is to wake up before them. Due to lack of time I wake up and have to get straight to work. I found that if I do anything else before this it would kill my flow. Which is why I would get frustrated at all the advice given to journal and exercise etc. When I did that, I found my work would suffer and I'd run out of steam. The only thing I didn't work on was recovery, so this is something I will need to implement. Also found my flow caps out at the 2 hour mark.

IMHO the only way to make this work forever and easily, and find happiness in your mornings, is if you feel excited about waking up. Like somehow harness that feeling you had as a kid on Christmas morning, or waking up to play that new video game that just came out, etc., where you don't care if you're a little tired because the excitement overwhelms all other emotions.
Obviously this is next to impossible in modern society, especially if you work a regular job, but I think we all have that one thing that would do this for us. Most of us just never find it. I'm still looking, but I have hope :)

I can get a lot done, especially if I wake up early before sunrise, the silence and darkness helps I think (that's what I feel). I don't do much of the recovery I just take a bath and eat breakfast. + Usually after wake up around 6:30 AM I go to brush my teeth and pooping, then around 7 AM I go out for walking as exercise for around 20~40 minutes then I would take a quick cold shower and eat breakfast at around 7:45~8:20 AM. Sunlight is understandable as Andrew Huberman says it starts your circadian rhythm, although from experience, this doesn't do squat to wake me up and help me sleep better. As for movement, why can't you just do that throughout the day or in the evening? Regardless, he's not saying that it is healthy, but he is saying that you have to choose between your morning routine and optimizing your flow proneness.

You still get sunlight on a cloudy day. Light is always prevalent at sunrise whether you can see it or not. Getting it first thjng in morn is productive for your health, which is true wealth. Would be nice to capitalize on the productive morning work hack too. So I think this quandary is great and I don’t see any good answer for it yet. 🤷🏻‍♂️

This absolutely makes sense. When I was young my parents made me and my sibling sit for not less than 3 hours of studying the first thing in the morning. We hated it but also would get so much done that we may not even have done throughout the day combined. I completely lost track of this routine as I grew up though. Following the trend of doing meditation, preparing and eating pre-workout meals, doing exercise, preparing and eating post-workout meal etc etc., as soon as I woke up made me feel badly overwhelmed and also exhausted every time I finally sat to do my work. I still remember this one time I had to wake up early to do some database-related work, and I had woke up feeling groggy that morning because I had slept around 2 o'clock the previous night. So mistakenly I deleted some over 4000 records from database. So the recovery you mentioned is actually very true and thus needed. Days when I would complete my work early, I would make sure to go for a walk in the evening and that would make me 10x more productive the next day rather than not going outside for a walk.

But I question how important it is to get to work as quickly as possible, or to take a few minutes first to make the bed, use the bathroom, brew some coffee, etc first, maybe for 5 to 10 minutes, and then get to work. I think perhaps the imortant take away here is not to engage in anything that requires more brain power than the basics (reading, journaling, meditation, etc) until after an initial work block. That's been the sweet spot for me, personally.

Hii, I’ve done this a couple of times with significant results. I have some tips or suggestions.
    1. Make sure your robe, slippers or anything else you need are staged the night before. I almost ate shit reaching for my robe or trying to fumble for the light.
    2. Try writing tasks or something that you need a pen and paper for. I felt like the computer screen was incredibly harsh to look at and mis-typed my passcode 4 times. Writing and outlining always worked best first.
    3. Have water ready next to your desk alongside whatever else you need. Pens, papers, mail, etc. Nothing worse than half asleep looking for these things.
    4. For all the people being grossed out by not first using the bathroom or whatever, join the Army. It will fix your pansy ass right on up.
    5. Lastly, after my first 3 hour block I get back into bed and that’s when I do what used to be my morning routine. TM, journaling, making my bed, making my coffee. Inverting my morning routine has made me look forward 10X more to this part of my morning.
I’m planning to make a video on my channel for the great experience with this technique.
    As always, thank you Rian!!!

To me, I look at the "morning routine" as a mislabeled "maintenance routine", so instead thinking about it as 'preparing for the day', I view it as maintenance/recover. You're repairing the damage you would otherwise experience without it. I work using a treadmill + standup desk, that's the right amount of stimulation to 'lock in' for work.

What a great video, as a college athlete I find my morning priorities heavily focused on my training, which makes me feel great after, but then I do my recovery, relaxation, and barely have any motivation to do school work. It’s so true to get your hardest work done first thing in the morning, and save the easier tasks for later.

As a person experienced this I would say it’s really works. I had an exam last year needed to make a summary from hundreds of academic articles. I used to go my desk just after I’d woke up and could work effectively and at the same time absorbing the information at the same time. So, it’s not efficient in just work but also a good strategy to study.

How interesting. I did this a week ago one morning. I thought about a Bible study I'd like to write and then I hooked up my video camera, turned it on and video taped my thoughts on the subject, just to have notes for later. But but but, what happened was that the video was perfect and totally complete as it was. But I hadn't combed my hair fixed my makeup, nor adjusted the lighting etc . Amazingly, my thoughts flowed perfectly and that never happens when I'm first taking notes on a subject I want to speak on. You are soooo right! I'm going to start doing your technique daily.

The preparation the night before is the key here for sure. If you're not ready to test this method in full, just try to at least prepare your work for the next day right before you go to sleep. It's important that you have no other distractions after you've prepared the work and go to sleep. No movies, no video games, no social media - the mental preparation for your task on the coming day is the key. You've to hype yourself up for the next day. You'll wake up ready, and it will feel much easier to reach your flow state and stay in there because you're prepared mentally (and physically).

One big omission in this perspective is that as a regular salary slave you have to do a lot of things in the morning just to get allowed to work. Walk the dog, dropoff the kids, drive to work etc.
The "billionaires ypes" have people for all these mundane tasks and can skip this entire step in the morning.

I agree with you - prioritary tasks should be done first thing in the morning and these morning routines should be postponed for later. *However, isn't it better to eat a good breakfast before starting your day?*
As I understood from your video, this method shows that we should wait for breakfast at least 1 hour, so that the time spent preparing the food and eating is given to the most important tasks. However, isn't it better to start the day with a healthy and nutritious breakfast? I don't mean a glamorous 30-40 minutes breakfast, but rather something that could take 10-15 to prepare and eat. You could even prepare it the night before to save more time.

Love your videos. I did this in college and it does work. That was before I found out about sun exposure. Andrew humerman says sun exposure first thing is the best way to stay energized throughout the day and sleep like a baby at night. Now upon waking i go outside. My morning routine: 6:00 wake up. Meditate. Go out for a run. Cold shower = 1 hr total. Works for me. I love the feeling of waking up for me, not for someone else.
After watching this video i could take a nap mid day then get back to work hopefully in flow?

Thanks for the very clear outline to the morning routine of yoga and meditation, which I never really felt ready for first up, yet was expected by the experts. So, a sense of lingering failure and low-level despair would hinder revisiting practices at other more suitable times. A practical 'doing' activity that is also functional in nature has always felt much easier to dive into... with so much more enthusiasm.

Wake Up & Flow is changing my life! I admit that the struggle phase is a little more uncomfortable some days depending on what assignment I'm doing. But i pretty much always look at what I've accomplished in that morning and i feel satisfied and motivated to do it again the next morning. I get to do more than i would do during the rest of the day with a normal routine. A significant adjustment i made though, i wake up at 4:30am so that i can have more hours of uninterrupted work before my first class of the day. With nowhere to go, nobody to talk to, and nothing scheduled that early in the morning, my attention remains whole and undisturbed.
Waking up super early might be difficult at first, but gradually shifting bedtime and wake up time makes it possible, i try to get 8 hours of sleep so i go to bed at 8 or 8:30pm. And i do deep breathing before going to bed and throughout the day to help me fall asleep faster at night and recover a little during the day. Give it a try!
