Harrison, I bought one of these machines a few months ago. It worked well right out of the box. Then I changed to a heavier thread/needle combo , and all hell broke loose! @@waynekneese2162 Check your rear cam (farthest out from the machine)....it should be pointing away from the machine when you set the timing (to the rear)....

Thank you Harrison for purring this video out there. I dropped my machine soon after unboxing it. It threw the cams all out of wack but after watching your video, 3 times ;), I was able to get everything up and in working order.

Hey there Harrison. I'm glad you posted these videos because they gave me a place to start from once I got my own machine. Mine seemed to come extra special messed up, complete with a slightly bent drive shaft, snapped off needles in the pitman arm, and a bent presser foot arm.
It's been a few months now of tinkering and not being able to get it to run without snapping thread. This video finally put me over the hump. After adjusting, sanding, and polishing just about everything on this machine, the last thing needed was shifting the cams so the presser foot was advancing while the needle was out of the leather. That took a deadblow hammer and cold chisel though because the cams seemed to be glued to the shaft at first even with the set screws completely removed.
Now though it finally works! Thank you so much for posting these videos!
TY for doing such a good job, havnt fooled with my machine in a while, went downstairs and made one or two small adjustments and now its sewing. still making minor adjustments to get my stitches just right but its working.
I want to thank you for sharing this video with us on how to set up the timing on the Chinese Leather Patching machine, without it I would have sent my machine back. I could never get mine to work and had just about given up until this video allowed me to get the machine to make a good stich. I could not see online any really good video's about the timing issues until I found your video and I wanted to reach out to you and thank you personally. I have also watched a few of your other video's and found additional information that I found very useful such as the video on properly lubricating the machine as well as other things. Have a great day and keep up the great work in getting useful information in an easy to understand method out, because it really helps.

My thread kept snapping. Adjusting the depth of the needle with my finger underneath did the trick.

Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge of these machines: I didn't know how to sew, but had some leather bike stuff that needed new zips and other repairs. After watching many of your videos, I got a machine and 2 days later; my leather repairs are complete! I was expecting a difficult bodge and many problems but it all went very smoothly, thanks to your preparation given on needles, threads, bobbins, tensions, common failures and how to set the sewing machine up. I will have a look on another one to be able to set with a heavier needle and thread: I sew a 6 to 8 oz veg tan leather and I need to set my machine for this kind of job.

Want to thank you for these tips. Have been fighting my machine and giving up on a regular basis. I have a Willys Wagon I've been meaning to do some minor leather work on, say the armrests, perhaps a sunvisor or two. But until I did all the modifications tonight that you had suggested I have had no success with my machine. Tonight my test piece went almost perfectly so now I will put the machine away and wait until the day that I need to work on the armrests, but knowing that it will be working out. Awesome info. I just picked one of these up after hand stitching for years. I tried to rope my Mother into helping me, she's been sewing for 50 years with machines. Turns out she doesn't know much about how the machines actually work, though 🤣. Had to Turn to the interwebs and found your channel. Helped a ton.

Great tip about the big spools up on top and tension.
After the video I got a bit of foam pipe insulation and electrical tape and was able to make that post about 1" diameter to better hold the big spools. Not as elegant as your solution but probably quicker.

Finger tested for needle depth; set cam wheel to 12, reset bobbin & holder to 3 = everything started working properly.

Great information. I got my machine two days ago. After building a stand, I completely disassembled it. I painted it and polished all the moving parts and contact surfaces. Some grease, oil, a few washers, and a little tweaking of the arms and she is smooth as butter. I'm pretty mechanically minded but your videos helped me understand the interaction if all the parts. I'm waiting on needles and thread but am confident it will sew like a champ when I'm done.

Worked for a day. Now my top thread is snapping... I’ve done everything 😑 this machine is going to be the death of me!
It’s strange, it works great with no material under the needle, then as soon as I place a test piece, the needle re-pierces the top thread making a knot? So weird.
@15:00 - it's not that engagement you're mentioning, it's the needle rod hitting the top of the presser foot (since the presser foot is lifted). I just got mine and have been having fun cranking it slowly and watching how everything works.

You saved my life with this. This is THE video. I watched all of yours ....been tinkering and trying for 3 weeks but couldn't even pick up the bobbin thread. The more I tried the worse it got. With this vid, the machine started to sew in under 10 mins. Omg. Interestingly my 2nd cam, the one with the rolling element, seems fixed on my machine...? It has the thread and screw, but I could not get it to move even with a hammer (carefully). However, it was quite in the right position as soon as I set up the first one, closer to the machine, according to your instructions, so I did not try too hard. It looks exactly like your setup - your screws are not centered exactly 100% either as far as I can see. And it works, so, whew.

I happy to hear you are up and running. The cam might just be stuck, it shouldn't be permanently attached to the drive shaft.
Wow!!!! You are the man !!! I've had my machine 3yrs now (two of them) and just found out the timing is set way off, set up at the factory (Although they still work). Just reset cams then the bobbin etc. The stops at 12 and 2 make more sense to where the needle and foot rest between movements. and I think it is working much better really great !! Thanks a bunch!

Awesome video! Received Cobblers machine today. Still had a piece of leather under the foot. Stitching was good. Threaded and test sewed a piece of my own leather. Timing was WAY off!! The foot was walking the material while the needle was still in the material. I was worried that I would not be able to figure it out. This video helped immensely and after setting the pitman rod and cams, I was up and running in minutes. Thank you for the video! I’m very happy :-)

I've watched your videos over and over, paused and checked, adjusted, tried, reviewed, paused, adjusted and so forth. Today, I managed to make my machine stitch for the first time without breaking the upper thread. The machine I got was off in just about every place it could be. I'd played with the bobbin timing for hours, and finally decided that the presser foot cams must be the issue as you included them in this video. I made a change there putting the cams where you show and it worked right. I still need to fine tune the thread tension, but it's pretty close as is. Thank you for taking the time and patience to answer our questions!!

Thank you for your help. None of the timing was even close to correct on my machine. Your voice instructions did not actually fix the timing. However, after matching my cams to the images of your machine in the video, it works perfectly.
For the spool fix, I switched the thread post to a tall threaded rod and cut rounds of flexible packing foam to stick up the middle of the spool to get the proper spool tension.
The final problem of snapping threads was caused by the needle not going low enough. Also, upgrading to a Big Spade Foot needle to match my #38 thread probably helped.
I can't tell you how grateful I am for your excellent advice, and especially your video.
I should mention that prior to this I had spent considerable time smoothing, sanding and polishing various parts to make it more reliable. For all the bobbin area parts I used Birchwood Casey SUPER BLUE LIQUID GUN BLUE, and soaked in oil to prevent the parts from rusting after getting down to shiny bare steel.
I now have a reliable machine. (after failing at least 2 dozen times to get it right).

I've never stitched anything in my life yet I randomly came across these machines on youtube and now I really want to buy one, use my machinist knowledge and tools to make many improvements and either put it to work making things just for fun or sell it onto someone who'd benefit from it! So, after looking at these machines for a while, (over a year) and after hours of research, i decided to go to youtube. Lots of people and lots of videos. Well, my machine arrived today. I took a lot of stuff off to clean, polish and lubricate. (I'll strip and paint her proper when I can get back outside). Got my bobbin wound and thread threaded, grabbed a hunk of scrap leather, cranked the handle and no bobbin thread. Back to your videos. Nobody else is as thorough as you. Anyway, bobbin carriage was off by 1 tooth. 12 and 2 got it close but the needle refused to pick up the bobbin thread. Finally pulled the bobbin out of the shuttle and just started spinning the handle and watching. Soon I decided that the carriage didn't advance far enough for the shuttle to catch the needle thread. Back to 12 and 2. The carriage was so close to the 3 o'clock that I was getting ready to disassemble the whole thing. Watched another Hightower tutorial, moved the carriage....again and finally stitched some leather. Still need to adjust the thread tension though. Top stitches are a little loose but I recall seeing you explain all that so tomorrow I'll watch that video again and hopefully be creating lots of wonderful leather goods! Thank you. First of all, please allow me to say THANK YOU!! for such good videos. I've learned lots from them. Your channel is by far the most recommended source of info for the CLSP machine. Now I've got a question for you about this video on timing the machine: Looking at 9:36 point in the video you talk about checking the pittman rod, with the handcrank just past the 2 O'Clock position. At this point the needle is down, and the cam on back is just starting to move the rod that causes the foot to "walk". How can the foot walk with the needle down? I'm sure I'm missing something, but with my machine timed in that manner it just won't sew. If I set the cam timing so the cam hits the arm allowing the foot to walk while the needle is up, it sews ok. I'm looking for guidance here, what am I missing?
i really enjoy your videos , you have been a great help. i sewed 3 patches on my vest it worked fine, then i came back a few weeks later to sew more patches on my vest , now it keeps bunching the patches up, i loosed the foot but its just bunching up my patches and not sewing anything. but seems to be working fine. and it is also bunching up thread on the needle. am i missing something ? thank so much for any help.

Thanks for the update on my timing. I have referred to it on several occasions. Do you have any videos on the pressure of the foot and also the stitch length? My machine is now sewing like it is supposed to, but I am having trouble with the advance (stitch length) and getting the pressure correct on the foot.

Flip the needle y’all, I checked my timing and whatever he’s showing here. I read the comments they said to flip the needle, the flat part of the needle is touching the base now and it worked perfectly. Just flip your needle.

Great video. I recently bought same machine but very green at the operating part. Is there a video on how the bobbing thread and sewing thread tie together once its ready to sew?
Harrison, thank you for your videos. They have helped understand a lot about these machines. I had been using my machine without any issues for a while and then I started having problems with it (i.e., snapping thread, breaking needles, and jamming among others). I oiled it, replaced several needles, followed the instructions on resetting the cams, pitman arm, and needle depth. After several hours of micro adjustments, it was able to sew. However, sometimes it jams and won't allow for a full rotation on the crank wheel. It stops around 7-8 o'clock and acts like it is stuck. I have to raise the foot and work the crank back and forth to get it to finish the rotation. I'm using the bigger 140/22 needle, which works, until it doesn't. I'm also using strong thread, but not too thick...T70 maybe. Any suggestions would be helpful, and thanks in advance. Blessings.

It's simpler for me to adjust the timing on a small block chevy than this, but this is very informative and should get the job done. Thanks...😊

First of all thanks for all the videos. I watched your timing video and was able to time this little rascal the first time. Now that I built a stand and ready to sew on it the timing is off. I watched the video 20 times since then and I still can’t figure it out. I don’t know where I’m going wrong. it was breaking the thread just as it was coming out of the Bobbin case. Now the top thread is hanging up in the bobbin area. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
