- We are going to Nashville, TN - Music City - on this windy but otherwise beautiful winter day. I've chosen BNA (Nashville International Airport) for this trip, a Class Charlie airport with radar/Approach Control and a Tower.
Later on that day I will head down to Atlanta, where the instrument panel upgrade for my Bonanza will be completed. The digital autopilot interface between the Aspen PFD and the Garmin GFC600 autopilot is now approved, so we'll get it installed in the Bonanza. This video shows my last trip in the old configuration.

11:18, “Say request “. “Request “. Are you joking me?😅 Nice job. You have better avionics than I had on 747-8F! After 30 years of Part 121 , I don’t miss going into busy airports like KBNA. I enjoy flying my C-206 into backcountry airstrips in Idaho, Montana and Utah to camp and flyfish with my German shorthairs.
Never heard anyone say “request” after atc said “say request”. Super funny. 😂
Excellent flight…thanks for sharing Martin! Don/NE Ohio 🙂
Thanks, Don!

22:00 hello from N2123K and welcome to Nashville!
Thank you, Archer 2123K.

23:26 the controller was really polite and professional! Nice to comunicate with those type of people! They understand that we are flying the airplane first, and after that we comunicate. Greetings from Argentina!!
Exactly!

The last time I flew into Nashville was almost 20 years ago. I was flying a Gulfstream 3 with COS Andy Card onboard. We were trying to make it into DC when one of our students detected fumes making him nauseous. I asked our staff what they were sensing and we all went on 100% oxygen. Looked at my copilot and asked him closest field to land, he said Nashville. We were at FL 370 and we were on the ground in less than 20 mins from declaring an emergency. The rescue and ATC guys were super awesome. Nothing but thanks for the professionals on the ground, but it helped to have a super experienced crew to get us there.
In 1974, my very first solo cross-country was from Houston Hobby to San Antonio International and back. The SAT tower held me at 2500 hundred ft. on base leg for 22R while a Braniff jet passed below me on final for 22L. I could see the stripes on the first officer's shoulders as he looked up at me. When I was cleared to land, I turned final, dumped full flaps, and landed on the numbers. I think the runways have changed since 1974 when I flew in there. Probably won't see students flying into there anymore, lol. Good times.
That's a great story!

Love your videos! My first flight as a child was with my father out of Mason City where our hanger was, so I love seeing you flights there. Now retired at 60 years old I have my private and only 150 hours. Working on my instrument, so your flights like this really help me. I now live in Montana, so it's a bit different with all the mountains around.
Nice Job Martin , I like the close up camera on the PFD .. I use a close up on some of my videos , gives the viewer a nice insight to whats going on in the left seat .. Nice Job ..
Thanks, Aidan.

Thank you for taking me along on this flight, Martin! It's always a joy to fly with you! You are such a good pilot! My idol! I finally flew today after weeks and weeks of bad weather here in Tucson. Lot's of wind, low clouds, and rain... But, seeing the snow in CR makes me wonder why I want to move back there! Ha ha!!! It was about 70 F here today, but very bumpy...
Along those lines, I just returned to Cedar Rapids after a week in Atlanta. I had gotten used to 70-80 degrees weather; today when I arrived it was in the 20s. Brrr...

Woo! that new panel is amazing and makes me nostalgic for the old one - at least there are old videos of it. Always appreciate all the details you include. Thanks!
Welcome to Nashville Martin. I would have loved to meet you while you were in town. Safe travels and another great video!
I love the new panel - even more so now that the digital autopilot interface is done. Just took my first flights with the completed interface yesterday and today.
- Martin
Nice flight, thx!
Glad you enjoyed it.
- Martin
Normally try to stay away from air carrier airports due to high fuel costs but in Nashville Tune's fuel is no cheaper but the do have very friendly and helpful folks.
Yup - sometime the GA reliever airports aren't all that GA-friendly.
- Martin
Thanks a lot for having us on this flight as always I do enjoy and learn from all the content presented here, wishing you all the best.
My pleasure!
- Martin
Always fun to ride along with you Martin. Thanks for bringing us along with you. I'm glad to see you're doing ok brother.
Thanks, Kevin!
- Martin
Thanks again, you’ve helped me be a better & more competent Pilot, Martin over the years!
Glad to hear, Christine.

I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I really enjoy them. The content is great and I’ve learned a lot as an airplane owner. I love all the improvements you’ve made to your Bonanza. Your panel is perfect. Well done sir keep up the good work.
Thank you very much!
- Martin
Martin, Another great video. I like to pull up the taxi diagram in Foreflight and follow along at some of these complex airports. Keep the videos coming!
Glad you enjoy coming along, Kevin!
- Martin
Nice work M…can not wait till you get everything working and online.
I just got the Bonanza out of the shop today, and the digital autopilot interface is indeed all working now. It's exciting!
- Martin
“Request”. Haha. Great flight and sure have to be cautious on the taxi instructions. Keep the good vids coming.
Hello Martin. I’m in Nashville today. I had flown to BNA for my class C airspace training during my private pilot training.
What an enjoyable flight. Thanks for the ride a long
Thanks, David.

Another great video! Two things I do: I wait for the gear up on long runways so I can land straight ahead if needed.
GFC600: I preset HDG Mode, pre-select Alt and then IAS Mode and the speed so after take off I just hit the AP button and all is well.
That when-to-raise-the-gear argument can be made either way, Timm. If my one and only engine quits shortly after take-off, my main concern is MY well being, more so than the well being of the airplane. If that means I walk away uninjured from a gear-up landing, so be it. At the same time, after I cross the airport fence, I will have climbed higher if I raise the gear early, giving me more time and more options.
Regards,
Martin
Great as always
Glad you enjoyed it!
- Martin
Solid performance. Thanks Martin
Thank you, Jerome.
- Martin
Enjoyed the video as usual
Glad to hear it!
- Martin
Martin. Love the videos.
Thank you!
- Martin
I like the new panel.
Me, too!
- Martin
Enjoyed the video, does that mean that you have FAA approval for full autopilot authority/interface with Garmin & Aspen equipment onboard ?
Yes - at last, the FAA has approved Aspen's STC. They had already given TSO approval for the new software back in November, but we also needed the STC to activate the digital interface in my Bonanza. It's all complete now!
- Martin
You do such a great job recording your videos. Most people don’t realize the work involved editing the multiple cameras. Right now 2 is my limit lol. I would love to see a video how you show your iPad “live” on your videos. 😀
Thank you for the kind words!
The iPad recording is actually pretty straightforward: I use an Apple USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, which provides an HDMI output of the iPad's screen. Which in turn is recorded on a digital video recorder (I use the BlackMagic Video Assist). Then it's like yet another camera angle for editing purposes.
- Martin
@@martinpauly I just googled BlackMagic Video Assist. This is great information. Thank you for sharing!
Hey Martin another nice film, great editing.
I love your Aspen set up and JPI 930 EDM, seems to offer a nice clear screen, and easier to read than my smaller 830. Interestingly at start up it was indicating 61 gallons of fuel on board, and at 11:03 it is indicating ….. 61 gallons on board. Quantity affected by the aircraft’s climb attitude possibly?
Is it my imagination or does your control wheel have a slight left offset when wings level?
Don’t you just love CZcams Monday morning quarter back comments?! Keep up the great content.👍
Well, these fuel level indicators aren't famous for their accuracy, are they? If you look closely, you can see that the fuel remaining has decreased to 55.6 gallons (the number just to the left of the fuel levels). It is the fuel totalizer, which subtracts the consumed fuel (which is known with high accuracy) from the starting level. So no, my Bonanza doesn't magically fly without consuming fuel.
The yoke was indeed off a little bit; that was corrected last week.
- Martin
I always enjoy your videos and your meticulous nature. Why did I keep hearing “altitude” from your panel? Clearly, you were high enough, and there were no obstructions.
Hi Dave. What you heard is the Aspen PFD; it says "Altitude" when it's getting time to level off, and again when deviating from the targeted altitude (altitude bug).
- Martin
Nice touch, you landed long but still landed in the touchdown zone.
I probably should have landed longer to get to the turn-off faster.
- Martin
@@martinpauly You did fine fine. I didn't the controller complaining. That was perfect for the situation.
BNA controllers are the best.
Will we be seeing you at SNF next month ?
I will be there the whole week, Mike. Can't wait!
- Martin
Martin, love the video. Are you getting traffic on your iPAD through the GTN?
Thanks, Garry. Yes, traffic is coming from the GTX345 transponder to the GTN750Xi, and from there through the Flightstream 510 to my iPad.
- Martin
Nice video, Martin. I enjoyed another vid on your preceding format of going into various Class C airports. Sometime back I recall you mentioned how many Class Charlie's you had been to and how many were left to go .. can you perhaps update that number on a future video? I'm moving back to the Philippines in just a few weeks so your channel is going to be one of my few links to "home" airspace and pilot procedures links. It was great to see you using the Shisa Kanko technique during your preflight checklist. Heck, an 85% reduction in mistakes is worth it. Fly safe and fly often.
Thanks, Dave. I think you are asking about my goal to fly to all Class Bravo airports. I'm about one third down the list. Class Charlies are so plentiful, I don't think I'll get to all of them (even though I just arrived at another one - got stranded in Louisville, KY for the night.
Point and call - yes, it really works.
Enjoy the Philippines, and I hope I can get you your "flying fix" via CZcams when you are there. All the best!
- Martin
@@martinpauly Yes, forgive my fumble fingers. I meant Class Bravo indeed. Be well.
Martin, at around 11:02 one of the green gear light is on, is this normal in the bonanza? I'm wondering what kind of failure case would cause that if not. I'm sure you are/were aware if this is a mechanical issue, however I'm just curious what could cause it, as green on usually means a switch is pressed and the gear is locked.
It was a wiring issue. Has since then been fixed.
- Martin
Do you not reduce rpms on climb? I saw 2700 on tach all the way to TOC?
when your plane was down for avionics, did you put the engine on a dehydrator (engine saver)?
No, I did not. I do vent the crankcase after I get back to the hangar to allow moisture to escape, but that's it. I also fly a lot, which most people would agree is the best thing you can do to give your engine a long, happy life.
- Martin
@@martinpauly thanks. Yep flying is best for engine, but just curious specifically during avionics install long downtime.
@@rammstein1903 I see what you mean. Fortunately, except for the first eight weeks, the airplane was flown regularly (during the development and certification program).
- Martin
which type of ipad mount are you using ? ciao
See here for details on the iPad mount:

Martin, do you have a speech-to-text program to make the text on the videos (eg the ATIS) - or do you type that in by hand?
I do those captions by hand. Takes a lot of time, but I hear from a lot of people who find them extremely helpful.
- Martin
@@martinpauly You have a very top-tier GA channel. Your extra effort shows.
@@tedsaylor6016 Thank you, Ted.
Martin is your A36 turbo normalized?
No - mine is normally aspirated.

MgKuD approach: Mit der Kirche ums Dorf……..
Hallo Patrick, wie kommst Du auf "mit der Kirche ums Dorf"? Das war doch fast ein straight-in Approach.
Gruss,
Martin
How are u getting atis on your phone?
@Ted Saylor true but he was getting it as text most numbers are AWOS or ASOS by voice
lmao at "Request"
Poor guy... And: It's probably a good thing nobody was recording ATC radio when I was learning to fly. 🤣

Easy clearance out of CID
Most of my clearances out of CID are "direct" or "as filed". That does make it easy for sure.
