Eastern Turkey: Kackar Mountains

  • Big & Small Travel ventured into the Black Sea Region of Eastern Turkey, where we climbed up over 2,000 meters to experience life above the clouds. We made our way on a late-night bus from Batumi, Georgia, to the Turkish town of Rize, home to the famous black tea that’s proudly served at all times in nearly every corner of Turkey. From there, we headed into the small, picturesque town of Camlihemsin, where we zip-lined over raging river rapids and met our local guide who took us on a journey through the Kaçkar Mountains. We then made our way above the clouds, into the misty mountain villages of Sal and Pokut, to take in some spectacular views, enjoy local music and dancing, and have plenty more tea, of course. Follow us on one of our favorite adventures yet!

Best park was base camp at 2600 m where we spent a night along a small pond. variety of seasonal flowers were so beautiful, air was so fresh and chilly. We walked on several.million years old Glacier, and really fast climb up to peak. A piece of advise, don't push for peak before acclimated to the elevation , at least 48 hours al Ng 2500-3000 meters peak was impressive, one.in a lifetime experience, above clouds and scenery was unbelievable. All of Pontus used to be the northern Black Sea region of turkey, it was a rich and prosperous center of the Byzantine empire and was inhabited by orthodox Christians (majority were Greek) and after the population exchange of 1923 Greeks in the region had the option of either converting to Islam or being evicted and many were kicked out of their ancestral homeland. The remaining Greeks who converted to Islam assimilated Into Turkish culture but there’s still some areas in that region that speak Pontic Greek.

The name Kaçkar (from Armenian khachkar (Խաչքար) literally meaning "cross stone") may be used in various senses. It may describe the whole mountain range, including the many mountain groups, or it may just describe the Kaçkar-Kavron group with its highest peak, or just the highest peak itself.
