- We begin a General Montgomery vs. General Bradley Keep'Em Rolling Race to the Rhine playthrough, using the expanded and updated edition of the original Race to the Rhine wargame (boardgame). In this 1- to 4-player game of logistics and combat in 1944 France from Phalanx games, each player controls one Allied leader and attempts to be the first player to get their forces across the Rhine River. In this episode we walk through the first two turns of the game, and talk about show how the game is played.

What a fascinating concept. Going to enjoy this short playthrough!
I enjoy this one quite a bit, thanks for stopping in!
Just wanted to stop by and say the pacing of your videos is absolutely PERFECT. Not too fast, not too slow. You manage to explain everything very clearly and succinctly without over-explaining. And as a rules stickler myself, I appreciate you taking the time to check the rules mid-game instead of just guessing (like some other CZcamsrs do!).
Definitely my favourite new wargamer CZcamsr!
Thanks very much! I'm glad you liked the playthrough, and I appreciate the kind words. :)
Living vicariously through your videos! Such a big part of my weekly routine and this series does not dissapoint! Also, I cannot tell you enough how much I look forward to your playthrough of Paths of Glory. I hope you prepare well for it, looking into the historical scenario etc. It is such a treat!
Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! :) Sorry to disappoint, but while Paths of Glory is on my Shelf of Shame Challenge, I don't have plans to bring it to video necessarily. Those Shelf of Shame games are just ones I'm hoping to play at the moment. The video schedule is pretty full. :)
excellent and clear explanations!
Thanks! :)
Another great report from the front lines! I am so keen to get a copy of this game. Your enthusiasm is infectious (in a good way - no need to call for the Medics😅).
I'm glad you're enjoying it! It's a very unique game for me to play, and I'm enjoying the combination of problem-solving inside a military theme.
Mike, one thing I look forward to in any game is whether or not it has a vassal module. I don’t have room to leave games set up so vassal is very important to me. I’d love if you made mention of whether or not games you review have a vassal module or not.
I've hesitated with that because often when I'm making a video the Vassal mod status isn't known, or I don't know about it. It can change pretty quickly when a game is getting released. So I'm reluctant to say there isn't a Vassal mod only for one to appear two weeks later.
I could probably add it to the video description as a link, but that makes me feel like I'd need to keep the links up to date, so yeah ... it gets a bit complicated.
Eagerly waiting to see which Corps performs the first encirclement bagging the bad guys.😉
🍿🍿🍿
Thanks! Next episode should be out on Friday/Saturday. :)
Me too
Great play through of the game like always. You enthusiasm is always showing, these games designers should hire you as a sale rep. 😊
Still not the type of game for me but you sure made it fun to watch
Ha! I'm glad you're liking it Patrick. I'm enjoying playing it, very curious to see if I can figure out how to keep the corps supplied as they get farther from their supply lines.
@@ZillaBlitz I need to learn from you. I’ve only done a couple of videos thus far but I need to be more relaxed. I suppose there is a learning curve and learn to be more comfortable while doing it. Yourself and Cody from The Discriminating Gamer are great example to follow
The learning curve is real. One of my first goals was "make 100 videos" to get comfortable with talking on camera, and if you go back and watch my earliest videos, you'll see anything but "relaxed". :)
I really like the elements of this game. Excited to see the next episode. Side note: my father was 101st airborne and my brother was 82nd airborne. It was nice to see the Screaming Eagle and All American patches on the side
Wow, what a tradition of service there! Fantastic. And yes, there are five possible airborne patches, but you always include one more than the number of players. :)
Hey, I was Born at Melun, and living near ! Cool to see it on the map. There is even the "Avenue Patton" there.
It's interesting to discover a game about the race competition between the British & US armies. Like Feldmarshall Von Runstedt said: "the allied advance isn't fast, it's just we are retreating faster".
Oh, that's cool that you are living right there. I'd love to visit this area of France at some point. And what a great quote! It's pretty fitting for the game. :)
Looks good. No dice, just thinking and decisions. But using the OB West mode I wonder about replayability.
I wonder, too, if there is an optimal route with OB West. The cards, however, seem to have a fairly large element of unpredictability to them, and that makes me think that as a player you're going to have to constantly adjust how you move and adapt. Even if there is an optimal route, each ally is different, so you've got the four allied commanders to figure out and then the additional These Are My Credentials game to play, so that's a lot of gameplay before you've cleared the decks, so to say. :)
A fascinating game looks like it would be fun with four players, but if Monty is too win surely he should start at level 3 🙃especially after the Arnhem debacle. Joking apart looks like another game added to my wish list. Looking forward to next episode. Many thanks.
The different challenges that each ally faces is quite interesting. On the surface, Bradley looks better prepared at the start but has zero supply locations other than their starting supply and only three corps. Monty has a longer way to go but has more corps to work with and lots of potential supply locations if he can liberate some of the coastal locations. I'm also curious to see how the other two allies play out. It's like each ally has their own game within the game.
@@ZillaBlitz With the four player game does one play, Bradley & one play Monty, while the other two play the Germans?
No, Patton and also Patch/Devers are two other allied options. Their operations areas are to the south of Monty and Bradley. (Patton's area is blue on the map. Patch/Devers has an additional map you add.)
@@ZillaBlitz Interesting. Many thanks.
Sure thing. :)
Is is wrong to mark up Monty's card with John Lennon glasses and a beard? Asking for a friend.
Haha. If you win the contest, you will be able to do this! :)
Interesting...the Brits MUST build a supply chain and dump it off one turn to be pushed onwards the next to even start to get close to the Rhine. The US with 6 in two rounds of a turn probably also has to? But not as much as the Brits will!
The British can bring supplies into the coast as well. I'll talk about that in the next episode. I'm not sure of a good strategy with them, tbh. But we'll try something. ;)
Could US VII Corps have gone to Reims with it's last move to try and get the medal?
Aha, I see. No, that is a location shared with Patton, but if Patton isn't in the game, those mutually shared locations are off limits to the active player.
I've made a note to talk about this in the next video. I should have mentioned that, thanks for the great question.
@@ZillaBlitz OK, thanks for clarifying.
16:51 correct me of I am wrong, but isn’t it that you can only move supplies in the direction the truck points?
Do you mean the arrows, maybe? If so, no, they are just thematic, units and supplies can go in either direction between two points, providing all the other conditions of movement are met. :)
Ypres , wipers, eepres
Thanks!
Those Belgian names can be a pain to pronounce even for a French speaking guy like myself 😊
I feel like I should know Ypres from World War 1, but I'm not sure I've ever heard it pronounced, just read it in books and games. I was thinking I'd learn the pronunciation of the names before making these videos, but there are like 50 locations on the map. :)
The "Region That Cannot Be Pronounced"
Haha! I was thinking I'd be okay but there are so many names. If there was only a one page guide with audio files somewhere, that'd be helpful.
