Finally, a video showing both he bearings. Great video.
Great video! I was replacing my rear calipers, rotors, and pads on my 2500HD when I noticed I had gear oil collecting in the caliper on the driver side. After watching this video I was confident I could replace all the bearings and seals as well. Your video was detailed and thorough. I double checked the torque specs to be sure, and you were right on. Thanks for the help! I had zero issues.
thank you for the video .... was a lifesaver ..... i’ve replaced the seal 3x on my 08 3500hd 4wd, and it’s leaked every time .... finally, thanks to your video, i realized there was still part of the old seal (original) stuck in there!!! hopefully my 4th time will be my final one!!!!
Great job. Like that you included torque settings, very helpful.
Great video, have been using your video all along the way that I've been changing my bearings out today! Going smooth so far thanks to you 🤘
Great video man. You helped me thru my repair like you wouldn't believe. And I also happen to think your camera and microphone work just fine :) don't think you need anything fancier since you explain and demonstrate the procedures very well. Thanks a bunch
Thanks! I'm glad I could help.
Great job! Thanks for mentioning both bearings. That helped a lot since most videos only show one.
excellent video - thank you for the effort to put this together! Very helpful.
Thank you so much for this video, just got finished with mine on a 2003 Suburban 2500 and everything I found was for the 1500. This was perfect. And including the torque specs, absolute perfection! Much better explanation and video quality than a lot that are out there, even from some of the well known/commercial video producers.
Thank you. I'm glad I could help. I wish I was still making videos but I haven't had time.
Thanks so much for posting your video! I will be having to do just this...starting to see some of what you are seeing from your driver's side as well!
This is a GREAT VIDEO!! A MUST WATCH IT! He explains everything down torque specs.
Excellent video. Very methodical and shows every step. My type of video instruction.
Just wanna let you know that you did a great detail job on this video and it helped a lot
Thanks.
My bearings and seals are in great shape but the previous owner let it sit, the parking brake locked up and damaged the ABS ring on my 2013 duramax (unlike your '07, there's an encoder ring behind each hub instead of just on the drive shaft). Thanks for posting this, now I feel a bit more confident getting at it this week. With all the rust in my area, I'm sure every part of this is going to be worse :D
Good video, if the metal ring sticks to the spindle instead of using a flat head you can use a chisel to lightly score every inch or so all the way around it. The chisel causes the sheet metal to slightly expand so as you work around the ring it will just pop off. Also putting your races in freezer for a bit will shrink them making it very easy to install in hubs. Worked as a semi mechanic for years and a full floater 14bolt is just a baby semi rear end.
Thank you. Yes that would work alot better. I only had my wood chisels.
Thanks for the good explanations on seals and setting the bearings. I am 1/2 way thru my '14 Express van 2500HD / Duramax 6.6 and the hubs and axles are identical. I needed some more information that was not in the manual. Like others said, cam and video are fine. Can see and understand everything.
Thanks Man. Glad it helped.
Awesome job, brother... After researching youtube and manuals, I did my inner and outer bearings on both sides of my 2004 silverado 2500hd... There was no information anywhere about the outer bearings and everyone had a different spec for tightening the locknut... Both sides failed pretty quick and I thought I tightened the hub too tight... So, I'm ready to do this again and thankfully found your video... I ended up putting the outer race on first, then the bearing and retainer... Now I know the bearing goes first... I use a block of wood also for the seal... Anyway, I have to thank you for this so my job won't fail this time... There's too much confusion out there regarding these full floating hubs.... You cleared it up... This video should get 100000 views... Peace...
Thanks Steveo66. I appreciate it. I hope it goes well.
Thanks for posting! Very helpful!
Im about to do this on my 04 2500hd. Great video, thanks so much 👌
Thanks
Best video I’ve seen on this thanks
Got to do everything you did plus have to do backing plates and all new brakes. Got a pile of new parts. My E-brake imploded a few years ago because the backing plates disintegrated
I love the video you walked me right through something I have never done and it turned out good drives more smoother
That's awesome. I'm glad it helped.
Damn, one hell of a good job with limited tools. Wow thanks for sharing your experience. I am probably going to have to do my truck some day. Incredible work. Thank you an God bless. 2 thumbs up from here. 🙂 👍
Thank you! Glad it helped.
@Packwood Performance 4x4 were you using a brass punch?
GOOD PICTURES AND VIDEO MATE, NICE JOB...THANK-YOU VERY MUCH !!!
Great video. Seems as if this will basically apply to my 2004 Chevy Express 3500, with maybe different torque specs.
Great video. Great delivery style. I had to laugh about the comment made when you spent 15min looking for the clip....I HATE when that happens. Haha
This video saved my ass with all your tips and tricks. Thanks man!
Love it brother thanks for great tips
Out of all the videos for seal replacement out there yours is most descriptive. Thank you for providing torque valves too.
Thank you! I'm a serious do it yourselfer - but for reasons unknown to me this really made me nervous. I have the GM manual online and isn't 100% clear what to do. My truck has 290K miles - I bought it used and have no idea the history. Bearings looked great (Made in USA Timken) - but it was starting to leak. I replaced the parking brake shoes and hardware and got a new Napa seal. Saved the $177 on the J tool for the seal and used a block of wood and rubber mallet - went in smooth. Now - how to exactly adjust the parking brake shoes...and to...or not to replace the seal on the other side when it currently isn't leaking???? Truck serves to haul the slide in camper - that's its whole job right now. So...ponder breaking open the other side when it isn't leaking I must. 😀
Awesome job 😎👍
Nice job dude! I was going to make a video for this but but during a brake job my leak popped up so no time haha. Thanks for the torque specs too!
Glad I could help!
Great Video! Because of your detailed explanation I am going to tackle this myself!
It was not as hard as I thought. But it took all day.
Well for me it took 2 days and a morning. And then the differential was dripping a little bit, so I used the impact to tighten up the bolts and snapped a bolt and then... 4 hours later... Had to drill out and re-tapped for a larger size bolt.
But really your video gave me the confidence to even think I could do it... Thanks!
Brother, I like you I like you a lot you remind me of me when I was younger and by the way, that was very informative I was lost until I watched your video. Thank you.
Thanks, and Awsome Detailed Video, You Gotta Make More!!! :)
Very good video. Thanks for posting...
This video was well done and was a great help for completing my project. Thank you!
Great video, thank you!
Your puch is actually a "Bull Prick," used by Red Iron workers to align primed girders as they are being riveted in place at great heights.
Wow. Thats cool. Had no idea. Got it from my Grandpa.
Double the pleasure double the fun! Isn't 2 seals always better than one? HA! yes getting all of the seal out is a very important step.
Right! Let's put a new one on and smash it instantly... lol
FYI.... I wish it only took 37 minutes for both sides!!!! Lol. Thanks for the shade tree mechanic video 👍👍🤪
Lol. I know right.
Just did the cp4 and injectors on my 13.....2 1/2 days🤯
Awesome video thanks a bunch for sharing
Very good video!
good informative video.
Thank you so much. I have a 2007.5 duramax i goint to do the same job.
Thank you so much for this video
Your Welcome! Thank you for watching.
great video.
Thank u Sr very helpful
Thank you for sharing, you are good mechanic,God bless you 😊
How do i know if I have 10 or 111/2?
You mean the hub?
96 dually rear hub bearings work the same but that little clip holding the outer bearing is a booger. Also needed a real good clip tool to reach in there
Muy buen vídeo gracias por compartir very good video thanks for sharing good bless you
you had me watching as I heard you call out tool sizes... I refer to videos to take notes down and set my tools aside. Rather than drag my hole tool box. It would be nice to know exactly what tools are needed when doing a job. Especially since I dont have the specialty tool to remove the center nut. From another video, I gather its a everthough 67037. From you, I know I need a T55 for Caliper slide out pins, 18mm caliper bracket bolts. No work on axel flange bolts... Either way, thanks
Good video. 👍 my rear left seal is leaking. After new seal it's still leaking on the test drive. I did put some gear oil on the seal and where it's sets on the shaft. And no silicone on the 8 bolt lol.
Lesson learned. I get to do it again 😄🤣
Did redoing it with no oil on the surfaces help?
@Chaden338 yeah the leak stopped
Nice work, thanks for posting.
The caliper bracket mounting bolts use medium thread locker. Be sure clean the old thread locker off before applying new.
Stay gold.
I just want to thank you for this video and your knowledge!! I wish I could do more then just hit a like button and subscribe!! I was scared to do this and was going to send it out and pay 1400!! Yea 1400. But I think that was with new hubs. Anyways I watched this 15 times ans it made this job easy and made me confident being able to do this. Again Thank you and godbless
That's great. Thank You.
Im curious if you experienced heat on either side after noticing seal failure?
You still looking for a jeep cherokee?
Couldny tell on your plate but florida?
Thanks
The hole in the center of caliper is for pushing piston open a bit more so you can get caliper off easier... just FYI
Verry helpful video. Hi chek many and this is the best and comprehensive.
Thank you very much
Nice job
Well done thanks.
Your welcome sir.
Had to do this three times on 6.6 duramax. I think its still leaking right now. Everything was done this way the third time. First time they didn't want to replace the seal and I was told to install not the correct way. Third time went with new seals but forewent the socket. Third time I did as I was supposed. I did add some oil to the surfaces where the seals sealed. To not tear anything. I guess that's the issue.
Made it looks easy hope it is mine are bad
The 2500 as the same differential like the 3500 you have to change the hubs for the dually ???
GREAT video!! Now I plan on tackling this myself. Question: did the kit you linked hold up well? Thanks
I don't have the truck anymore, but I had no problems
Recently replaced the bearings in my hd2500. Your vid was a great reference to keep lookin back at.
I like the tire/wheel set up you’ve got on. What are they? Thanks.
Those are 16x8.5 MB 352 Wheels with 285×75×16 Geolander MT Tires
Im.doing mine tomorrow
Awesome video.
1. Should I let the silicone dry a bit before tightening?
2. hould I used the gaskets I ordered?
3 any particular king of silicone?
No need to dry first
If you use gaskets. Make sure surfaces are clean. No need for silicone.
If you use silicone any gasket style should work.
Out standing ! Subscribe I did! Going to your channel to see what else I can learn.
Hey great video. I've got to do my 2500HD GMC Sierra. This helps a bunch. Do you have any information on the axle nut removal tool, I'm striking out locally.
I believe I got it at Oreilly Auto Parts. They had it as a tool to rent or buy for $12 or $22 I think.
my beloved '05 LLY is making howling noise i take it in shop they said whole rear end needed replaced for $5700 including new rotors pads etc. Was your truck making a howling noise or just leaking?
Great show my friend
Thank you
Edit
Can those E brakes be worked on without pulling everything off
Mine are way over heating and I can smell them burning
You can only adjust them with everything on. On the back side there is a hole and you can spin the adjuster for the e-brake with a flat head screwdriver.
Awesome music
Question: I will be doing this for the first time to my 03 duramax tomorrow. What’s the reason why you wedged the front tires ?
Just for safety. Don't want the truck to roll on me.
Hello - great video. Can you tell me what type of silicone you used when reinstalling the axle? Was it a silicone sealant/adhesive or a type of gasket maker? Thanks - GEM
I can't remember but I was thinking it was gasket maker.
What tool kit did you use that had that special socket? Great instructional video! Ive got a leak seal on my Duramax right now, I'll be gathering parts and tools to get started! Thanks.
I bought it at oreillys. Just the socket hub tool
What is the part number for the socket?
I belive this is it 39564113888
O'Reillys has them.
@@packwoodperformance4x474 thanks
Drive in figure 8 pattern in a parking lot after fluid change/bearing /seal replacement!
I have an 2012 Sierra HD 2500 , is it any different then the 2010 model? Good video man ty for the info
Man. I would think it would be pretty much the same. Maybe different size bearings. I can't tell you for sure. I searched for 2012 bearings but only seen them for the front. Which is the same as mine.
PLEASE READ! If you are doing this job on any truck thats rusty.. MAKE SURE the vent on the top of the axle tube is clear... If you have rusted up hole inside it will build up pressure and keep blowing seals out. Its more common than you think.
Great video. Makes it look a little less intimidating. One suggestion would be to change the brake pads and park brake shoes if they are contaminated with gear oil.
I agree. I thought I said that. I just didnt have the $$$. Definitely stops better now anyways.
Very helpful video. Just a quick question would there be any other reason why it would have a leak? Or is this kinda the most common reason? Changed the brakes on my 15 ram 2500 and the e brake was caked in grease
I need to change one on mine again. I seen a little piece of the brake hub shield where you adjust the E brake, has rubbed the hub seal to where it is leaking again. I knew it would, I already had it back together and I was tired that evening. Lol
So, there are TWO grease seals on each hub?? It looked like you pulled one off, then pulled another one in the same position as the other. Then the left over metal from a seal that should have been removed. I thought there was just one seal per hub.
Thanks!
Your welcome!
Ty
Question. Is this one seal on the axle hub that separated into two pieces or is there two separate seals for the hub and the housing?
One seal. It's 2 pieces combined to make one seal. One side is set to the axle and the other side spins with the hub.
Anyone know where I can get that socket and what size/type it is?
I believe it's a 2 3/4 - 9 pin. You can rent or buy at Oreillys for $12 or $22. I can't remember, sorry. But they know which one.
Do you think the leftover seal part (around 00:13:00) is a separate part for the seal to run/scratch on? So that the seal won’t damage the big axle (or whatever it’s called), aka, grind a grove on it. Thanks!
No. As you see in the first seal I take off. They come apart over time. The seal is 2 part. It spins like a bearing. And the one that was left on was smashed way far in from someone putting a new one on without removing the old one. That's why there was so much play in that hub.
@@packwoodperformance4x474 I’m still confused. The pinion seal definitely has such a sleeve for the seal to run on, but seem GM has taken it away from the axle seals. Are the new axle seals like bearings too? Thanks!
Now I'm confused. It's the exact opposite of a pinion seal I think. A pinion seal is secured on the outside when a hub seal is secured on the inside. So when the wheel spins. It's like a hulahoop on the axle shaft.
Not exactly but kinda like that
@@packwoodperformance4x474 right. So either seal needs to run on a sleeve, or it will make a grove on the axle (or yoke), or metal to be universal.
@@packwoodperformance4x474 check out this please: czcams.com/video/PSCezvwuzbA/video.html
Great Video, I just had to ask, Why didn't you replace the Axle Shaft Hub Gasket with a new one, instead of using Silicone sealant over top the old one ?. But just out of Curiosity did you get any leaks, or did the Silicone work?.
Thanks. I just didnt have any. Silicone is more accessible and works.
No leaks
So was the hub real loose at the beginning because the previous person installed it against that old seal that wasn't removed?
Yes, it was pretty loose.
nice
Hoping hub isn't damaged or that chaft
thank you owe you a cold beer!!!
If one seal is good, two seals are gooder:)
How do I know what size seal I need? I tried to buy one online but there 3 different sizes and didn't know what to buy.
If I'm not sure I usually go to Orielys website and type in my vehicle and part. Get the part # then search for it. Amazon sells AcDelco parts for way less
having trouble getting the passenger side axle to go in, been at it for an hour, any tips? driver side is in, great video
If I remember correctly I had a time on one side. Slowly turning it and holding it center. It's tough. I can't remember if there is a mark or not.
@@packwoodperformance4x474 are both axles the same size, trying not to get frustrated, just having a hell of a time getting it in
I Believe they are the same.
mine has a white mark on the shaft, maybe that is the top, will keep trying lol
If you look at the splines. Is there a Groove that is wider? To go on 1 way?
Can you use a press to put new bearing in hub?
Yes I'm sure you could if you have one big enough.
@@packwoodperformance4x474
I used a 20 ton. It was more than adequate. I would say that one could use a 12 ton if they have it.
Doing mine now..... who's parking brake assembly is upside down, yours or mine??!?
One side is opposite the other side I believe
That’s funny AF. 🙏
We all got one upside down.
Well this work for a 2000 Silverado 2500? And is it the same parts?
Yes I believe so. The parts are in the Description and has the years it works with.
Thanks for not showing how you got the inner C-clip out. I’ve tried several different pliers and couldn’t get it out. Local O’Rieleys didn’t have anything to help😊
This is what happens when a college kid designs something, on a computer, mine s a dual wheel , a small key way and a thin “ c “ clip holds it all together!! Any one remember when u could put together a truck with a nail if u did not have a cotter key for the axle castle nut !! Lol ! Plus u need tool # 123xx45 etc not to mention a damm lap top !
11.5 or 10.5 also are parts the same ??
I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure they are different.
