    this is a godlike movie. seriously imagine watching this in theatre in 80s and when the credits roll you would belike oh my god how could you end it there and make me wait for 3 years to see what happens next. thats insane

    • @Wlof25
      @Wlof25 Před 7 lety +5

      First thing....how is this a "godlike" movie?
      Second thing....Ending on a cliffhanger is not a good thing for a movie, it depends too much on its future sequel.

    • @noc_yt
      @noc_yt Před 7 lety +16

      Wlof25 well... it really depends on the quality of the movie. If we don't care about anything that's happening, then obviously a cliffhanger is not a very affective way to end the movie. But Empire was the middle of a franchise, which is the best point for your characters to be really down on their luck, making a cliffhanger is worthy ending. The cliffhanger was frustrating for fans at the time, but it works because the movie felt genuine in it's usage of it, like the film makers actually wanted the viewer to feel sad by the end of the film, where some movies only implement cliffhangers for the sake of getting people to see the next movie because they know their movie's not good enough to stand on it's own.

    • @Wlof25
      @Wlof25 Před 7 lety

      0816Egg
      Some people would disagree, like Joss Whedon. If my memory serves me right, he said that movie needs to be self contained, or something like that and when you think about it, people are getting an episode, which they need to wait fro3 years to watch what is happening next, what can be frustrating.
      As for the quality of the movie. I think we can agree that it was a good movie for its time, but it aged. If I am to make a movie with those kind of dialog and acting, today, that movie would be laughed at and panned.
      We also have bad writing in the movie, pacing problems, plot holes and inconsistencies.
      When you take everything into consideration, obviously this movie cant be godlike movie, nor one of the best movie ever made, how Jeremy have put it.

    I was 12 years old in 81. When I saw Empire for the first time and the credits started to roll at the end, I stood up and announced to everyone in the theater that they were making a third movie and that they had 15 minutes to do it. I would wait. I stood looking at the screen, looked at the projection booth, back to the screen, sincerely waiting for the third installment. That was my introduction to the concept of cliffhangers...and for the next 3 years, everyone in the world debated whether Vader was lying or not. And that's how it was.

    I don't really see the problem with Qui-Gon being Obi-Wan's master. I mean, people can have multiple teachers in life. He simply learned from Yoda and was apprenticed to Qui-Gon later. It's not like people in real life have the same teacher from kindergarten to high school.

    • @TechnologicallyTechnical
      @TechnologicallyTechnical Před 9 lety +1

      This may be true, but even then, don't go comparing the arts of training to become a Jedi with boring-ass school where they want you to become a rocket scientist or something.

      @ElongatedVowels Před 9 lety +4

      Well, Jedi don't become Padawans until about age 10-13, so that's plenty of time for Yoda to have taught Obi-Wan.

    • @ElongatedVowels
      @ElongatedVowels Před 9 lety +4

      Anakin is 10 in Phantom Menace, but Padawans are not what Jedi start out as. You're supposed to have several years of introductory training as an Initiate before you can take the test required to become a Padawan. The reason they thought Anakin was too old was because he wasn't born into the Jedi way, so he might be too attached to the outside world to become an efficient Jedi.

      He did, the movie from the beggining establishes that Vader knows who Luke is and that's why he is going after him, but after Lucas changed the emperor dialogue he created a plot hole because god know why, now we're supposed to think vader only then realizes about luke which makes no sense since he is already frantically searching for him, why would vader go after luke if he didn't know who he is, the change in the special edition fucked it up, it was good before

      Nah, I'm fine with how I rated those two. I think Phantom Menace is bad, but I also think people really tend to exaggerate just how terrible it is, mostly because they (understandably) are incredibly disappointed by it as a Star Wars movie. Looking at it objectively, just as standalone movie and ignoring the Star Wars title, it's still bad but it's far from the worst thing ever. It's nowhere close to Battlefield Earth or The Last Airbender bad. So I think it's more disappointing than it is objectively terrible.
      Return of the Jedi, while still enjoyable to watch, is an incredibly flawed movie. I'd be lying if I said that while watching it I tend to think of ways it could have been so much better.
      The only rating I'm kind of regretting is for Revenge of the Sith. I feel like I was a bit too generous with that one.

    So as I have noticed, a lot of "movie journalists" constantly hail Lucas as the guy who made Star Wars and deserves all of the credit. Hell, even Wikipedia accounts of Star Wars pre-production fail to ever mention that the script revisions weren't Lucas' idea. Here's what's actually true: Lucas can AND should be credited with the initial spark, and commended for the shit he put up with when filming on site. THAT'S IT.
    Everything else that was good about Star Wars is the work of everyone who isn't Lucas. They are the ones who made him revise the incoherent and bizarre script into a short and sweet story, they are the ones who kept Lucas' wild ideas in line, and they are the ones who he constantly worked to discredit because they didn't put up with his shit. If you've seen behind the scenes of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Lucas is a lunatic who tries to shove every idea he has into a movie. A lunatic with some really good ideas, but a lunatic nonetheless.

    Kinda funny how Jorge Lucas is pretty much IRL Darth Vader, cause he was a pretty cool guy when he made the original trilogy. Then we turned to the dark side and made the prequels and after that he had a brief moment of redemption when he sold star wars to Disney.

      Same boat. I mean, in the first scene you see Vader's obsessed with finding the Rebels, "That is the system, and I'm sure Skywalker is with them." So we are to believe that Vader senses a Force sensitive in A New Hope during the Battle of Yavin, and now the Rebels have a member who is named Skywalker...and he doesn't make the connection. And he's obsessed with this kid, who happens to have his last name, but doesn't realize it's his son until the Emperor...no. Vader was playing coy, trying to pretend he didn't already know. But I can see where that could be confusing if you don't sit there and jig-saw the dang thing together.

    Yoda respectfully stepped in as Obi Won's master when Qui Gon died. The reason they did that instead of just letting Obi pass the trails, say his vows, etc, was because Qui Gon was killed and it would've brought out raw emotion in Obi so he would need a little longer with the training.

    • @MikeKaess
      @MikeKaess Před 8 lety +2

      I don't remember anything that has ever said that. It's more likely since we're retconning that Yoda pretty much trains every Jedi in something during their training time. You see him in AotC training a bunch of younglings with lightsabers. Further, Obi-Wan is known to stretch the truth a bit to fit his narrative (darth Vader killed anakin) and it's easier to say Yoda trained him rather than just saying Yoda is a good trainer. It makes it more personal.

A movie like this such be in the rarified atmosphere of "Uber Awesometacular". Or just "Empire Strikes Back Awesometacular". I am so happy the creative guys behind this movie are involved in the new one, even if the crossguard lightsaber is making an appearance - though even that is slowly, but quite steadily, growing on me. Being an Expanded Universe and SWTOR/KOTOR nerd, the idea of the main villain of the movie digging into the ancient history of the Sith and coming back with a proto-saber like that, among other things, is pretty fucking awesome when you really think about it. Probably see a lot more Sith Alchemy and all.

      No, he would have Han say, "I truly...deeply...love you." With no emotion on his face. And zero chemistry.

    Jeremy, at the end of ESB the fleet is above the galactic plane but that's not another galaxy they're looking at, it's a newly formed solar system.

    Gotta give a shout out to Lando's butler with the headphones on steroids. Captain's the guards with hand motions, stays stoic and silent until called up and saved the heroes asses! That subtle eye open... SO cool.

    I haven't watched these films in years and recently got the Blu Ray collection. I have to say that I enjoyed Star Wars: A New Hope more than I did The Empire Strikes Back. I loved the more subtle moments in the original and it felt like more of an adventure than The Empire Strikes Back. I'd give A New Hope 9/10 and Empire Strikes Back 8/10

    Empire was actually the first SW film i ever saw...and i saw it in the cinema. Completely blew my mind at the age of 6. Had to wait almost 2 years to watch the first film on HBO 😑

    I'm a massive Star Wars fan and a huge cinema enthusiast, and I started with the originals. However, I like 3 best. It captures the grand scale of what's happening and the emotions of all those involved the best of all the Star Wars movies IMO, and Anakin's final turning to the dark side was highly interesting to watch. In fact, I feel that with some more exposition 3 could function as it's own prequel to the originals

    They are now explaining why Vader was searching for Luke before he knew he was his son in the new marvel comics.

    Well also take into consideration that Darth Vader sensed the force in Luke during the trench run and when he realized he blew up the death star and survived he's like "oh damn I need to see what's up with this guy"

    I'm happy in the knowledge that I have no idea what you're talking about regarding the emperor dialogue in the re-release. I watched the original 1997 re-release, only born in 84, grew up with the classic version, and not much had changed with regards to empire. I still have the theatrical release on dvd that they did with the 'new' versions. Threw away the new version dvd. Never watched an edition since.

    2:50 - 3:20 I agree it doesn't make sense in terms of the movie. Remember also, when Captain Piett showed Vader the Hoth readings that revealed the Rebel base, Vader said "I'm sure Skywalker is with them." So clearly he knew he had a son before his talk with the Emperor, unless there's a Rebel strong in the Force who also just happens to have the last surname as him. I heard somewhere that Vader was just PRETENDING not to know when the Emperor told him, which would make sense since he wants to overthrow him, but who knows for sure.
