    If you don’t smoke, then don’t vape. It’s stupid

      Mood. I have colleagues who vape and the horrifying reality is the extent of their nicotine addiction. Smokers have no choice but to hold it in until they find a convenient spot to smoke legally as the scent of tobacco is too difficult to miss. Experienced and addicted vapers have all sorts of techniques to completely conceal their vaping, scent and smoke included, which results in a scenario where if they are alone or with people they trust, they will pretty much take a puff every few minutes or seconds even, tens of times more frequently than the tobacco smoker. Imagine what harm that does to the dopamine-riddled brain, even if we naively assume that all vapes only contain pure nicotine and glycerin and nothing else.
      Heck, common sense tells us than inhaling any fumes always come at a definite risk to begin with!

    I enjoyed the episode, but I can't help to feel that the content led me to the conclusion that vaping is worst (to the health) than cigarettes, without actual robust scientific details/tests. There were a lot of variables thrown around and one of which is that a single vape pod is more harmful than a few cigarettes?
    If one is to say that vape is worst than cigarettes, I would expect the hypothesis to be tested as follows;
    1. Using a list of known harmful (to human health) components in cigarettes, cross-compare the presence of these components in vape, and narrow the list down to about 10 chemicals
    2. Using a standardised laboratory test as shown in the video, compare the quantity of these short-listed chemicals in a puff from a cigarette vs that of vape
    If the quantities of the harmful chemicals in a puff of vape is more than that in cigarettes, the hypothesis is true, that being vape has more harmful chemicals than in cigarettes. If not, then the reverse is true, that cigarettes are more harmful than vape.
    Although I enjoyed the episode, the production misled me to conclude that vape is more harmful than cigarettes without proper comparisons.
    edit: sentence structure

      In the UK vaping is promoted as a way to get people to stop smoking however there are laws on where you can vape just like where you can smoke - so no vaping inside in schools, cinemas, train stations, etc - , you have to be over 18 and what vapes can be sold. We do have a problem like in Singapore with teens vaping but we had a problem with teens smoking. Most of the adults taking smoke breaks outside in the UK are now vaping.

      I agree on the point that this report makes somebody think that vaping is worse than smking but in term of the research that you proposed above, I don't think it worksthat way. To study the effect on human being, the possible design that is ethically sound is a Case Control Study, which now is quiet hard to do, since the duration of exposure between the groups are unbalanced.
      Now the evidence that the doctor provides is called a Case study of a teenager having a pneumothorax due to vaping. This case study of course raises a concern, but the level of evidence is quiet low since to established a causal relationship, case control is the minimum to go, followed by cohort study.
      But my point is: A case report on "EVALI" itself should raise a concern.

    • @baladavient11
      @baladavient11 Před rokem +2

      @@MrNikkovl I completely agree that human data will be more convincing than the in vitro (lab-based) study I proposed regarding the harmful effects of vape vs cigarette. However, the doctor cited having one/two patients with pneumothorax. No case studies were cited. If a comparison between vape and cigarette has to be made, according to the title of the video "Vape: Are They Really Healthier Than Cigarettes?", and if human data is to be shown, I'd expect a controlled study to be reported where you have one group that is the control (cigarette) vs the test group (vapers), and track the health indicators over a period of time (which you made a very good point that it can be extremely lengthy, especially for cohort study), to make a claim that one is more harmful than the other to human health.
      "Numerous in vivo and in vitro studies have been performed to better understand the impact of these new inhalable compounds on human health. Results of toxicological analyses suggest that e-cigarettes can be safer than conventional cigarettes, although harmful effects from short-term e-cigarette use have been described. Worryingly, the potential long-term effects of e-cigarette consumption have been scarcely investigated." Source: Marques, P., Piqueras, L. & Sanz, MJ. An updated overview of e-cigarette impact on human health. Respir Res 22, 151 (2021). doi.org/10.1186/s12931-021-01737-5
      TLDR: To make a claim that vaping is more harmful than cigarettes, a controlled study is warranted, where the health indicators (can also be incidence rate of pneumothorax) are measured between the control (cigarette smokers) vs. test group (vapers) over a fixed period.
      Edit: quotation and reference to a peer-reviewed review article in British Medical Journal

    • @Lu5ck
      @Lu5ck Před rokem +7

      Well, cigarette is well studied subject thanks to your great grand parents. For vape, the test subjects are this generation and you will see the result half a century later. We can only make assumptions of how bad vaping can be based on our limited understanding of these chemicals and how the chemicals are delivered.
      Based on current understanding, vaping is easier to get into than smoking because of the flavorings and lack of repulsive smoke which make sense that one will likely to puff more than typical smoke. If you end up puffing more than a typical cigarette stick, it is obvious you gonna breath in more chemicals than typical cigarettes. The episode did not explicitly say that but that what it is implying.
      It is also easier and cheaper to obtain, and young age are very vulnerable to chemicals as they are still growing. Therefore, in that contrast, vaping cause more damage than smoke.
      Smoking is more well known for causing lung cancer but little do people know that smokers also experience organs failures as they age. Cigarettes smoke as it burn, it condense in the lung. Vape is already vaporized, most of it get absorbed by the bloodstream, there is a fair chance vaper's organs will fail faster than smoker's.
      It is up to people what they want to do with their body, but I believe it is important that people know the possible long term effects, it highly possible not anything better than smoking. Likewise, having your loves one taking care of your sickly self as you age is quite a irresponsible thing to do.

      Yes I've had a short class about vaping. The teacher of that class has done years of research on it and says that overall vaping is less harmful than smoking. The most harmful thing about smoking is the act of unhaling the components that are created by the act of burning the tabacco, which is lacking on the end of vaping where they just vaporize the liquid. Also there are a lot of variables in the case of vaping. You can buy pods with OR without nicotine which is the component that causes the addiction. For ppl who want to quit smoking by vaping they can try to lower their nicotine intake by choosing pods w a little bit less nicotine than before. This helps with the withdrawal effects you have if you want to abruptly stop. Also using vaping to kick off has been more effective than other methods like chewing gum w nicotine, badages that transfer nicotine through your skin etc. I forgot the exact numbers since it's been a while.

The problem with vaping lies in the producing. Many buy from in-store mixing or locally produced ones. Just like Moonshine. Who's to say what goes in and how much percentage of nicotine is added for example. In short, no QC. Even now, the disposables ranges from RM8 to RM22 for 600 puffs. One is imported, the other is buying the unsealed/refillable catridges/pods and DYI for a cheap price. And here in M'sia, it's common to see kids around 12 with each holding a VoltBar. I make my own liquid, I know what’s in it, I feel perfectly fine using the products I use rather than smoking cigarettes. I highly support vape usage for adults who choose to use them or use it as a way to quit smoking. I don’t recommend people or minors start vaping if they don’t already use cigarettes.

Most disposables and pre-filled pod vapes sold in sg and Malaysia only comes in 30 or 50mg/ml which is an extremely high nicotine level that most people shouldn't be using unless you are a very heavy smoker. The high nicotine content actually makes the cravings and withdrawals much worst than using a lower strength vape such as the 3 or 6mg/ml. In the UK and Europe, the highest strength available is only 20mg/ml which is already quite a high dose.
