- 2001 Toyota Sequoia 4x4 owners review, let's look at the issues and the weird cool things about the first generation Toyota Sequoia. The best used SUV to buy is important because you don't want to spend all of your money on something that will give you problems, so here is what to look out for on the 1st generation Toyota Sequoia. The 1st generation Toyota Sequoia started in 2001 and ended in 2007, they all had the million mile v8, in the later years they were upgraded with higher horsepower vvti engines and 5 speed transmissions along with more technology for the interior, better nav and dash accessories. The limited trim also has leather with more luxurious pieces inside. This is the best SUV you can buy on a budget, it is reliable and the best value on the market. What a great budget overland vehicle too!

There selling me one 2001 limited 2002,000 miles for 35000 is it work it has som3 little issu3s but not mechanical

Your exactly on point with everything! My son recently bought a 2007 Sequoia and had all service records from the Toyota dealership and I pulled them up. Toyota did this right being able to get the original owners service if. Great torque from the start like you said. Had to take it home on the expressway and it drove effortlessly. Like a new Sequoia. No oil drips or leaks. Has 193,000 on it and oil is almost clear when n it’s time for a oil change! Totally happy with it
Great to see the Sequoia again! These are great trucks. Funny you mentioned the timing belt: I'm having it done on my 2000 Land Cruiser on Wednesday. First time! 173k miles and 22 years on the same belt. The 4,7 2UZ-FE engine is unbelievable. I go 8,000 miles without burning a drop of oil!

Dude so my father gave me this truck today for a Christmas present, I didn’t even ask for a car cause I work remotely, and I barely drive, now I gotta pay him back lmfaooo. But I am grateful, and I was curious if you can do a tutorial on the high and low 4 wheel drive clutch and how to use it? There is also a 4wd button on the dash board and was curious what’s the difference?

I have a 2002 Sequoia SR5 4wd that came with leather seats. All the badging is gold. It has 269k on it and the timing belt has been changed 3 times. Everything works on it, even the sunroof, the rear window and the lift gate latch. I bought it in 2016 for $3k and it had 213k on it. I had to do some maintenance to it, but it is bulletproof.

I have had my 03 SR5 for 17 years, never an issue with the exception of the hatch handle. Replaced that with the small metal handle that eliminates the cable. Besides the timing belt, always check your upper and especially lower ball joints, they had some issues early on. Other than that, almost 300 K and no problems at all. I do my own maintenance, one of the simplest trucks to service.
Change the oil it always looks clean on the dip stick but once you drain it its super black in the pan
Never go 10K between oil changes. There is zero reason for doing that

I can confirm that the 1st gen Sequoia can get passed 300k. Mine is currently sitting at 304000. Waiting to replace all 4 wheel bearings (it is expensive).
Fantastic video, do you put the Land Cruiser. 200 series or even the 100 series on the same reliability scale as this one? I am seriously considering buying a used Sequoia with 200,000 miles. I’m just wondering how much money I will need to bring it up to sound mechanical drivability? What are your thoughts?
Mine has 260,000 and have changed the coil pack a couple times $40 each - that’s it - change the oil and timing belt every 80,000
The rusty frame issues was mostly from Suv from coastal areas. Especially from the northeast region they use a lot of salt on roads.
I’ll give everyone a secret. That block was originally supposed to be used for a small aircraft engine. That’s why they never have any issues. Absolutely nothing. I learned this from a Tech that came to the dealership I worked at for 14 yrs , he was from the Japan plant yakusaki.

Toyota made an update for rear latch they were made of plastic. Now made with a steel bracket that’s going back to 2011
Hey . I have a 02 limited . I have the vsc trac lights on but no check engine . Any trouble shooting tips other then gas cap ? And how does that affect the traction being it’s off
Try resetting the codes first, battery unplug or hand held device. Then start looking at the sensors on the wheels, see if anything is unplugged anywhere.
It’s not an uncommon complaint, search the boards

Did you have to put a lift to fit the 265/70/r17's? If not, is there any rubbing?
Not much rubbing, not sure if it’s lifted I don’t think it is
Im looking at a 01 for like 8k with 147k miles thinking if a good buy or not. Replacing my 01 suburban damn engine seized
147,000 is low mileage, I like the high mileage ones because you know they run good and have been driven, but with very good records and no rust

I take it you removed the side steps? Like you said yours is a bit rough but so what? Like the color and the wheels. If your keeping it maybe think about a paint job? Got my 2004 4WD SR5 for $4000 in August 2020. Was one owner, still only has 169,000 miles. Is steady as a rock. I replaced rear latch handle, it failed again after a few weeks! I now have end of cable fed through small hole under license plate. Been working fine like that for almost 2 years. Rear side door actuator failed twice, my fault for using cheap eBay parts, third time used OEM part and holding up. Had timing belt replaced, kit from Amazon cost $169, got local mechanic to install for $410. The old belt still looked like new. Recently drove up from Florida to Pennsylvania, averaged 21 mpg but drove a steady 55. Removed middle and rear seats, I use for camping and utility, bags of room, have a double size foam mattress and have slept in it a couple of times. Will never sell it, so reliable and the 4Wd works great, in fact in winter I could not get up our steep drive without it. Would highly recommend these trucks. If you shop around you can still pick up a good one for less than $5,000 and the great thing is they will outlast most vehicles you can buy new today 😆

the frame repair was not a recall it was labeled a extended warranty and it ended in 3 years ago so no more frames from Toyota

they make all-metal rear hatch latches as an upgrade

Who does? I purchased my 3rd latch from my local Toyota about a year back and it's failing already.
@@electropentatonic I own an 05 with the original latch/handle. Most people just replace just the handle. The problem is the cable that needs to be replaced, not the handle. The cable stretches out over time and use, causing the user to apply more pressure on the handle, which then breaks. I only replaced the cable before the handle broke, which is why my handle is still the original. Just a little tip for everyone.

There wasn't any difference in horsepower between 2002 and 2007, the engine was the same. The difference was how horsepower was officially measured, in 2005 the Society of Automotive Engineers changed the rating system to "SAE Horsepower", which involved a different metric in the HP calculation.
Cool I’m sure that happened but they did use a different motor, vvti vs non vvti
@@JakeTiesler I don't think so. I could definitely be wrong, but from what I've read, every car's HP rating changed between 2004 to 2005 regardless of whether the engine itself changed. I'm 100% not an expert, but I'm sure Donut Media must have done something on this.

Im more of a GMC Yukon, Suburban SuV TRUCKS, got 3..already. bought my 2004 First gen Seq 6 months ago, for cheap,was told that, it was most def one of the best SUV ever made between 2000 and 2010.. i was suspicious, did some research and check everything ,reviews,etc.. and a yeah.. i am amazed about it, got mine with 33s and 3 inch lift, bullbar,etc..looks amazing black on black..
the 4.7L iForce is virtually one of the best V8 ever made,like you mentioned no leaks, stable, no rattles..no wonder why Toyota got it discontinued, it is way too good and relaible!!!

I went the other way. I’ve always had Toyotas and I guess I just got spoiled so I went and picked up a Tahoe. 05, 1 owner, Z71, no rust, you name it, this thing supposedly is the best thing since sliced bread. I’ve owned it for 3 years now and I’m astounded by how many small things break. Feels like it’s nickel and dimeing me left and right and there’s always something next on the list. From what I’m finding this is just how life is outside of Toyota.
I’ve always owned 4Runners and I’ve never once had a repair. Just taken good care of them and always driven them 250k+ before selling for the next 4Runner.
Im selling the Tahoe, picking up a Sequoia/Tundra/GX or whatever I end up finding and I’m never looking back!
