  • Gareth Southgate needs to walk now. England have been beaten 4-0 at home to Hungary at Molyneux in the Nations League. Our appalling form in this competition continues and with a World Cup in Qatar just around the corner, we need to make a bold move now and sack Gareth Southgate.

You're one of the few who has consistently and rightfully explained time and time again given Southgate the accurate assessment of his level as a manager. I've been pretty lenient on Southgate, even praiseworthy, but this international break - not just tonight's result - has changed my mind. Tbh, it's been obvious for a while that Southgate is out of his depth tactically. He has to go, he's had years now to instill some confidence in his ability but that just hasn't happened imo. Even with our tournament performances, it's clearer now that we were more lucky than anything with some outstanding individuals pulling us out of it (kane, sterling etc.). I don't want to be disrespectful to Southgate though, I do think he's given his all in this role and is a top professional, but he just isn't up to scratch. I totally agree with the point about wasting our talent, so it's important that we act quickly but without panicking as Kane said.

Southgate has been in the job for years and hasn't shown improvement in this regard. We would be wasting this talent if we stick with him for too much longer. So in a sense I agree with you that sacking him right now with no plan would be a bad decision, but I really disagree that we shouldn't begin to plan for life after Southgate.

Saw the similarity between Southgate and Solskjaer. Both reach 2nd position due to luck. United in 20/21 was lucky because other top 6 team, exclude City, bottled their chance. Even City lost 6 times that season. England reach final, was also very lucky. Qualify the group With 2 win + 1 draw and 2 goals + 0 conceded against Croatia, Czech & Scotland (read: not top team). Then meet Germany who's passed their prime and on their downfall (2-0), Ukraine (4-0) and Denmark (2-1,ExTime), then lost in final with Italy on Pen Shoot out. Statistically, look fine. But watching the actual match will tell you everything. Like United, England vs team with good center midfield will dominated. Shown when they face Denmark, Croatia, Czech & Italy. Harry Kane mostly save England from certain defeat with his great pass & goals, definitely not because Southgate tactic. And witness all of that, FA reward him with extended 4 years contract. And what happen next ? ... similar to Solskjaer, in the next competition, they're exposed when the lady of luck not on their side anymore.

I'm 61, I've seen a lot of highs and lows with England - this current era reminds me of the 70s when we had a huge amount of talented and maverick players and a succession of old fashioned managers who didn't know how to play them. As a consequence we failed to qualify for two world cups. I'm seeing the same pattern now. As far as I'm concerned Southgate should have been booted after that ludicrous penalty taker selection in the Euro final. I don't think another manager at the tournament would have made choices like that. I have no idea what his motives were, only he knows. I can see the fear factor running through the team now, the same thing that hampered the golden generation. The shackles are on and creativity suppressed. Southgate needs to go, we need a manager with progressives ideas and a grasp of the modern game and somebody not afraid to start creative talent like Grealish and to give them a simple instruction 'express yourself, and enjoy it.'

It's frustrating because I saw right through Southgate right from the get go. Yes we had a fantastic run and everybody was completely washed up in all the excitement - chanting sweet Caroline as we made it to the semi finals.
But if you actually pulled yourself away and analysed any of those games, we were dreadful. There should be no pride in the way we performed over the past couple of tournaments.
When it really came down to it as well, you could really tell Southgate was out of his depth. Playing tired legs for the full 120 minutes and then putting on 18 year old youngsters who haven't had a chance to warm up yet to take probably the most important penalty kicks we've had in the last half a century.
You'd have to be blind to blame 1. The players and 2. To think Southgate is the man to lead us to victory.
Like you said, both games have been incredibly winnable. In fact we absolutely should have won them. They were as close to guarantees as you could probably get, yet he bottled it.
Everybody jumped on Ole's back for the lack of substitutions and tactical changes in the europa final. Yet Southgate has been lauded for doing the exact same thing.
That's not saying ole is good, it just shows you how well backed Southgate is in the places it truly matters.
As you keep saying, I fear it's a golden generation wasted.

Understanding of your team's qualities and abilities to use the qualities in a way that will disguise the flaws

How many times have you seen an England player with his arms out because know one is showing for the ball? Working hard off the ball isn't just about running onto through balls, i Its also about creating angles to receive passes. Its especially important for the number 6 have these qualitys. England have no short game because they're not technically good enough. Sure they can play sideways and backwards, and play short when there's no pressure around them, but when have you seen them play that fast incisive short triangles? To me England still play long, but they're long passes now, not long punts up to a big number 10.

I’ve said it in the comments of other videos of Rory’s, and I’ll say it again today: Italy (my team) beat England in the Euros finals solely on the fact that we had an elite, proven manager. Our crop of players, whilst very talented, had no business competing with England’s squad. The total transfer value of England’s squad dwarfs ours, but for some reason the FA is always apprehensive to hire world-class management. Think what could be achieved with a proper UCL-level club manager.
Ultimately, keeping Southgate (or even replacing him with another equivalent-level manager) will always keep England from winning trophies. In 20 years time, people will ask the same “what could have been?” questions about this squad, like the early-2000s team. The only difference is that people will be questioning the poor management, rather than the rivalry of the players.

Major part of elite management is in-game problem solving ability, of which Southgate exhibits NONE. Never learns from his mistakes. Absolutely nobody playing between the lines but insists on a double pivot with Jude sitting. Astoundingly poor tactics. Could easily have kept the double pivot with 4 up front when we needed a goal.

Southgate is the albatross on the neck of the England team. England are the most talented nation in the world. That Euro final was a certain win looking at talent on the pitch. And England should have been challenging or even winning that last World Cup too.
Problem is, everything England do is despite the managing and coaching instead of because of it. The praise Southgate gets is beyond unwarranted. As a member of the FA, sure. Some sort of spokesperson.
    He's a handicap.

We had Ole, very similar to Southgate for England fans. With so much media and PR backing, fans are starting to see how AWFUL the manager and his tactics are, the number of OBVIOUS favourites the manager has, the lucky route to finals and semi-finals and the non-identity on the football pitch. England fans unfortunately are going through a similar type of pain that United fans underwent with OGS.

As a United fan, I can tell you that the parallels between Southgate & Solskjaer are scarily alike. The only difference is Solskjaer had nowhere to hide in the end since United played 2 games a week. This fraud is going to survive because the fans’ outrage will die down by the next time England plays. The only way I see him ever getting sacked is losing all 3 games in the WC group stage.

Southgate was lucky with the World Cup draw in 2018, played 2 decent sides and lost to them both. One of them twice.
We then went into the Nations League finals in 2019 and got humbled 3-1 by Netherlands and limped to a penalty win vs Switzerland after a 0-0 draw.
We battered a weak Euro 2020 qualifying group and did the bare minimum by getting through the group in scoring 2 goals. The Germany one was a good win granted, but playing at Wembley we'd expect to win, same in the semi final. The final we blew it 1-0 up and we just sat back and let an average Italy side take it away from us.
He should of walked after that and allowed a more progressive coach take over from him (Potter or Howe), but I truly believe Southgate has brought into his own hype with his constant 'social education' to those who voice different opinions to his own. Arrogant and the establishment media refuse to criticise him but instead choose to attack the fans
    Southgate out

I remember early on in Southgate's reign where he did some interesting stuff with Sterling dropping deep in midfield - since then though he's ran out of ideas as was seen against Croatia in the last World Cup - the team should be built around fast possession football with players like bellingham, rice, foden in the middle, I know guardiola has converted Sterling into a forward for City but a more progressive Southgate would give Sterling a free role to suck in opposition players in the middle of the park and create real space for direct players such as Grealish and Saka to operate - not this 5 3 2 stuff that puts all the focus on CB's and DM's that do not control any sort of tempo whatsoever...

What's the point? A new coach.
