    Charles Orwell Brasch was a New Zealand poet, literary editor, and arts patron. He was the founding editor of the literary journal Landfall, and through his 20 years of editing the journal, had a significant impact on the development of literary and artistic culture in New Zealand. His poetry continues to be published in anthologies today, and he provided substantial philanthropic support to the arts in New Zealand, including by establishing the Robert Burns Fellowship, the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship, and the Mozart Fellowship at the University of Otago, by providing financial support to New Zealand writers and artists during his lifetime, and by bequeathing his extensive collection of books and artwork in his will to the Hocken Library and the University of Otago.
    I have come to the end of doubt
    And to the beginning of the knowledge of self;
    I have described a circle round the earth
    And reach my starting place,
    And I am ready for that which awaits me there.
    "The Quest" is a poem open to interpretation, the poem explores themes of self-discovery, the journey of life, and the attainment of wisdom.
    In the first stanza, the speaker declares that they have reached the end of doubt, suggesting a sense of clarity and resolution. They have also attained self-knowledge, indicating that they have come to understand themselves better. This could imply a period of introspection or personal growth.
    The second stanza uses the imagery of circling the earth to symbolize a complete journey. The speaker describes having completed a full circle around the earth, metaphorically representing a journey through life. By reaching their starting place, the speaker suggests that they have come full circle and have arrived back at their origin or essence.
    In the final line, the speaker expresses readiness for what awaits them at their starting place. This could indicate a sense of acceptance, preparedness, or even anticipation for what the future holds. It suggests that the speaker has gained a sense of purpose or direction and is prepared to face whatever lies ahead.
    Overall, "The Quest" can be seen as a reflective and introspective poem about personal growth, the journey of life, and the attainment of self-knowledge. It portrays a sense of resolution, completion, and readiness for the next phase of the speaker's journey.
