    The most versatile guitar I own. One moment you play Hendrix and the next you play heavy metal. Incredibly resonant as well. I pick it up as much as my 1000€ Ibanez.

    £40 is a steal!!! You should keep it, set up, new string set and call it another great guitar!

    I learnt to play guitar about 15 years ago, started with an argos special. Got bought this as an upgrade. Its been my only electric guitar since. Other than that all I have is a Tanglewood acoustic I saved and bought for myself. I'd love a strat but its just never been on the cards for me and my yamaha has gotten me by always. The neck and middle pick-ups don't work anymore but now I'm in my late twenties I can have the confidence to try take the time to fix and set the guitar up properly and get better intonation and maybe lower the action a little.

    Today - Sept. 27, 2022 - I bo't an ERG 121C 3rd hand thru a local online buy'n'sell. 2nd owner did a poor job of refinishing it with truck bed spray paint followed by black rattlecan. He placed a 4th pickup (humbucker) beneath the original bridge pup so that in selector switch position 5, two buckers are engaged where Yamaha intended that only one shall kick in. I'm not sure yet as to how switch position 4 treats the bridge/middle combination. This is certainly an intriguing modification! And he actually did a nice job on adapting the pick guard for the additional bucker. But the 2 buckers are NOT adjustable up or down for tone tweaking. I fear that this will be a project where I will have to go to the trbl of restoring the guitar to its original state. This is my hobby so I c'nardly wait to tackle it. It's a YAMAHA. As far as I'm concerned THAT ALONE makes me responsible for restoration of this sorely abused instrument to original glory. With a few improvements thrown in. I luv working on cheap guitars of good brand. Always rewarding.

    Nearly bid on one of these, on ebay yesterday - but my first modification would have been to respray that black body, into a nice bright colour - possibly metallic - so that those black humbuckers really stand out!!

  • @mottee
    @mottee Před 4 lety +4

    Picked a similar one just yesterday for 40€ - second hand, of course. Changed the strings and lowered them slightly, now it feels GREAT as a budget guitar. Neck is very precise. Sound is OK too, would be still better if the humbuckers could be split for a greater variety of single-coil tones. But all in all, unbelievable value for the money. A novice would go a long way with this one.

    • @mottee
      @mottee Před rokem

      @@archannel9305 Yes it is. Took a while before I found the EGR121 to check - my daughter had adopted it since I got myself an even better axe, a Yamaha Pacifica. Playabilty is quite the same but Pacifica's pickups are better for clean tones which I prefer, and it also has the ability to split the bridge humbucker. Was quite a lot more expensive, though - 160€ second hand.

    Oh nice! The Yamaha ERG 121 is my first guitar and after some years I wanted to learn more about all the guitar parts. So I started to modify nearly every part of it, painted the headstock black, added a chrome yamaha logo and clear coated over it, changed the humbuckers to alnico IV's with chrome cover and switched the middle pickup with a telly neck pickup to match that chrome cover look, switched the pots with pull/push, other knobs, different tremolo system. In the future I want to change the nut and learn how to do a fret job etc. it's so stress relieving to do these things and see how the guitar gets better and better. Now it looks like a yamaha 600 series or somthing and sounds great :D

      Also painted black my erg121, phat cat neck and dimarzio breed bridge are in, middle was kicked off, and the tone pot was deleted. Changed the nut to brass (still think it was a mistake), push-pull for the bridge. But it is still so much far away from my main am st tele from any point of view.

    Hi i am buying one 2nd hand after seeing this video Thank you !!! i have a provocative question ... you are using it with the Line 6 HX Stomp. A 399£ effects box with a 40£ guitar.
    I wonder if it is better to invest more money on effects than on the guitar. I mean ... with a 500£ budget how much to put in one or the other item ?
    There was a friend who was sustaining the real problems with cheap guitars are two .... pick-up quality and set-up. A cheap but decent guitar with a pick-ups replacement and professional set-up can become a pro instrument. I tend to give him some credit. He was quite a good player. What do you think ? thanks and regards, gino

      Yes, Yamaha was modified, but it's the same guitar and as it's 14 years old it doesn't twist because of humidity. And stomp is super compact. So now we're in Thailand, jamming, writing, learning)
