I think many people in those days had a very simple taste when it came to fun. I doubt whether a holiday camp would appeal to many people nowadays. However,I suppose it was a relatively cheap method that allowed ordinary working people to take holidays once a year.......
I went to Bognor Butlins as a kid in the 80s, noisy at night as the steps were all made of metal, so you'd hear constant clanging when trying to sleep and boring in the day time, to the point I ended up building a Lego kit there :D
from what i heard, people would eat food eith high sugar content, but since exercise was their way of entertaining themselves, they were burning it off, even if it was walking a few miles to school :)
No gaming consoles, no smartphones, TV was still in it's starting shoes (less commercials, more innovative inventions), people were enriching themselves with innovations, were way more social and no gender wars. Less stress. Lots of jobs. If you wanted to change career, then that was possible. Nowadays, if you quit your job, you will have a hard time get another (unless you are young). No overpopulation (still in the build-up phase after WO2) They opened up the valves and threw away the controller...
As I recall only Minehead and Skeggy had monorails; tht's one of the reasons I was so excited about holidaying in Butlin's Skegness as a kid. Butlins was also where I saw the very first video jukebox - so ahead of its time, but not a huge selection... I remember a Cliff Richard "Summer Holiday" and Pet Clark's "Downtown" were popular choices.
Theme for next month......FARMING......farming has changed so much here in the UK over the years....and not much of it for the better i think....but yes....to see some old traditional farming methods and machinery would be interesting please :-)

Outstanding 1960's old fashioned British summer video!!
Fascinating. These old Pathe news clips are brilliant, thanks Pathe.
The swimming looked so unsafe ... marvellous ahhaahha
'Elf n safety' would have something to say about that! Probably have to sign a disclaimer now!
Safe was a nonexistent word in those days :D
QDR Quality No, it was all about having fun back then!
It does look like great fun! Definitely health and safety not as much of an issue back then! All best, BP
6:57 lets stand 5 feet apart and toss a large ball back and forth while remaining totally stationary. That will be fun.
Great fun! All best, BP
this channel is fantastic!

We went to Butlins Filey back in the late 70s. This video really brings home to me just how much better the world was in those days.
Filey was great, went in '79.
I really miss the days when we were all a lot easier to please.
Me too
AMAZING ! THANK YOU

Can't beat a bit of Lego! All best, BP
Did you also have to endure the incessant _"Ice cream nice cream gotta get an ice cream now!"_ jingles blaring over the tannoys all day long?
I went there many times when I was kid ! Lots of fun there and lots of drunks too !! lol
sunburns must have been intense, some of the people shown were as white as paper.
Course they are it's in England!
I'd say back then Britain had the most extraordinary amazing sports anyone could ever do
I think there's a reason these didn't really catch on lol
I seem to remember Roger Stevenson did a lot of puppet stuff on TV in the 60s and 70s
the teddy bear doing picnic was so cute
Yes, I was there ;))
Are you sure? I don't recollect seeing you... ;)
Those were Beautiful days.
Gee I wonder why she was advertising her chalet number on her back ;)

Wow. Has twister been going that long?
Clearly it has! All best, BP
The pictures of Bognor look much the same as when I was there as a little boy.
I love the beauty teddy bear's model back then in the 60s , as it was a fantastical clown to
all the kids , including my grand-mother. Very fun time
very sweet
4:27 -is that Gladys Pugh?
Thought you would've had the monorail in this video.
Yes, we'll have to include another one with the monorail in! All best, BP

Nightclubs with marionettes obviously not made up for this newsreel.
Please next month do a theme on Apartheid.
