Gameplay of Pokémon Sun and Moon recorded by me, in between sessions of playing the new Pokémon games, Brilliant diamond and Shining Pearl, while we wait for Legends Arceus! In this series we take a look at the official strategy guides and try to beat the game by following them as closely as possible, as Nintendo intended or, as Nintended!

On your note about the straight single streets in towns, it could indeed just be laziness by Nintendo, but a couple Hawaiian islands are just like that. Kauai has basically one road that goes around almost the entirety of the island and many of the major towns work around that main road. If that main road is closed, part of the island is effectively blocked. So, the town designs loosely work like some Hawaiian towns. If purposeful, it’s actually a nice touch.
its questionable if its purposeful since, well, we get a similar design philosophy in sw/sh
@@iceneko9170 I see what you mean about Hulbury and the castle place. I think the main problem is the lack of interesting interiors and the fact it's not worthwhile to go in any of them more than a first exploration.
@@not_monkey thats the thing though... in sw/sh the towns *look super interesting*. theres no reason that the interiors would suffer if given propper development time and were custom fit for the area. the towns themselves turn into single roads too, which is really frustrating when we see such grand and interesting themes like motorstoke with its overindustrialization and the castle with its dragon spires and technically historical archetecture.
we also have the town in a fairy-like forest, a town built around a spire reaching towards the sky... ancient ruins... the fact is that the themes are interesting and could lead to amazing places to explore. to say the interiors are cloned and uninteresting being the problem is barely scratching the surface
Regardless of inspiration or laziness, you would think the devs would realize that a single straight street acting as a city is not visually interesting, does not encourage exploration, and is not very memorable.
@@iceneko9170 Galar is shaped like the UK. idk how you would do that in anything but linear
I think the Alola games would be improved so much by just adding the option to skip cutscenes. It would make them so much more repayable.
Same. I actually liked them alot the first time I played them but all the cutscenes and in game talking really kills their replayability. And that problem continued into the Ultra games. I bought Ultra Moon the day it came out and just beat it earlier this year because I felt like I had already seen everything before.
I swear if sun and moon remakes happen and they have that I could play it forever cuz they’re my favourite games lol
For me once I go through the starters twice, so 6 save files, I get bored of them, but only in gen 7. I'm the type of player who's ready for competitive, but plays casually and feels obligated to keep my starter around for good.
@@dbzluva987654321 Honestly they need to just to upgrade the skip cutscene option too. Like what's even the point of a skip cutscene option that skips like 3 scenes and just leaves all the rest of them in?
@@nutmegdoesstuff1339 is that what the one in SwSh does?
Because I was going to use that until I read that it said it just cuts them all out, so I’d miss the story, rather than just adding the possibility to press the X button to skip the cutscene?
I'm pretty sure Samson Oak is in this game for the sake of easily explaining what the crap is a regional form. This guy is literally the Alolan form of Professor Oak.
I would argue we should also have an Alolan form of Blue to further expand this family.

S/M are actually one of my favorite pokemon games, i dont really mind the many cutscenes, it adds to the story.
So truuuuuuuue, can't agree more. Every time I play sun and moon it's like i'm playing It for the First Time again
Same! Such fun games
Same! I enjoy playing it anytime I can!
Glad you like it! Though I personally realy disagree... I dislike _almost all_ Pokémon games (though I like gen 5 and love ORAS), but USUM made me annoyed and angry in ways games rarely ever do for me. x)
Not my favorites but all the side quests are a nice touch and I do think there’s a lot of personality and attention to detail in certain places. For me, it’s not so much the cutscenes but their placement in the beginning of the game that’s a little frustrating. I personally don’t mind cutscenes as much later on in the game.
Side note: Kukui’s not a Champion. He challenges you to defend your Champion Title. As in, you become the First Champion of the Alola League and then defend that Title from another Challenger.
So Kukui’s not the “substitute” champion, he’s a challenger while YOU are the champion.
Technically professor kukui is standing in as the champion. He starts off by saying you are the champion now wouldn't it be nice if it were that simple unfortunately you still have one more challenge to go and that's me. Meaning you are not the champion untill beating him.
@@robertrucker9210 then why are you considered the FIRST Champion? Why are you DEFENDING your Championship title rather than challenge the current Champion for it? Why are YOU sitting on the throne and someone (Kukui first, but others for when you go through this again) walks up to you to challenge your Champion Title??
Kukui challenges you for YOUR title, not HIS.
@@robertrucker9210 Technically, there is no champion yet. Kukui is the organizer of the league, so he has the right to make sure you are champion material. Kukui isn’t acting as a champion. He’s acting as a judge and also wants to be part of your journey via a final battle.
I really like how Igglybuff was a part of the regional Dex and obtainable early on since in most other Pokemon games you have to breed to get these baby Pokemon and it's nice to be able to put them on your team early on even if they're not that strong

HAIL YEAH!!!
I didn’t even hear that but at 41:42 I was like arkoos and I left a comment 😂
Everytime I feel like replaying gen 7 I always forget how long it actually takes to get started in the beginning.
That, and the part where some girl teleports you to the festival plaza on the second island, not letting you leave until you do the tutorial for it. Grr...
Exactly, it’s such a slow paced game and combined with the very small size of each island it really feels like you’re exploring in a small and restricted area instead of free roaming like in X&Y. It’s funny bcs nintendo said they made this game to utilize 3ds’ full potential yet X&Y feels waaay more utilized than this.
@@bunny5735 I literally put the game down at that point and went back to ORAS. I never did end up finishing the game

I, personally, Loved Sun and Moon and they are my 2nd favorite pokemon region of all time. I know not many will agree, but I love these games regardless.
I honestly agree playing gen 7 was the most fun I've had with Pokemon in years (played it for the first time last year)
“Over-sized foes, like your mom” 😂😂 that cracked me up and you really just slipped that in there I wonder how many people even noticed
It's nice to see that "hammer away" got some love with this guide.
I just adore how, even after so long since his first Nintendo Intended video (the FRLG one) Father Ocean continues to use the "hammer away" line that was used to death in the FRLG guide. Also, can't forget: fire is super effective against rock!
To see this video today is quite a surprise for me, because i recently thought about pokemon games overall and come to the conclusion that the Gen7 games (especially Ultra Sun/Moon) are probably my favorite generation/games so far.
YES, the games have flaws, especially when you are an adult player or are someone who plays through the games for a second or third time, because the start is so super slow, but overall i really like the Alola region and what it brings to the pokemon games.
So if i ignore all the flaws (each generation had) then i end up with a very beautiful game (thanks to the style), an interesting region, cool characters, a funny/cool evil team, the gym trials (which are a welcomed change to the known formula), the whole S.O.S. battle system and some neat things in the Poke Pelago.
Story, game mechanics and lore wise, SM/USUM its one of the strongest together with B&W/B2W2 (or better bcuz there are no freaking rotating battles gfd). Yeah the game start is pretty slow with all the cutscenes and it gets anoying how much handhelding there is. The rivals are more of an ash type companion, which is kinda nice as it makes the whole journey less, idk lonely? Like you actually create conections with these characters without it being as forced as XY. I also like the villain-not-villain teams as it shows the whole "not all people who act as villains, are evil themselves" and "you can have good intentions but awful execution". Which is more realistic than stuf like "I just wanna destroy the world and create my own lmao" (dpp are my fav games but still).
Its a really solid game that doesnt deserve the hate it gets.
@@zoinksscoop20yearsago68
That sums it up pretty well.
I only just started playing ultra moon recently after a hiatus from pokemon and I gotta agree, Sun/Moon are definitely one of the best games in the series.
It is more fun thinking about the game than actually playing it in my opinion
I totally understand where you're coming from with your gripes for Sun and Moon. For me it was really fun.....the first time. These are the absolute worst games to replay since I already know what's gonna happen and have to just mash the A button so I can get back to the adventure since I only cared about the story the first time.
Oh yeah, replay value is just terrible. Mele Mele Island is probably the WORST part of a ANY Pokémon game EVER. Sword & Shield and X & Y are not super beloved, but they are SUPER replayable.
I never liked it, no gyms and the ultra beasts through me off. to this day sun and moon are the only games I didn't finish and ultra are the only ones I've not played.
@@Undrave I was literally shitting on SWSH and XY a few minutes ago. I don't like those ones at all. SWSH is fine for one playthrough (same with SMUSUM) but XY wasn't even worth it the first time. XY are the worst Pokémon games in my (correct) opinion

The Alolan games are probably some of the better in the series especially the ultra games when playing them they really did feel a break away from the standard Pokémon game with gyms.
It’s just the 4 minute long cutscenes every 10 mins felt like you were being punished for playing lol.
They are honestly really fun games I don't see why they get so much hate
@@chendror872 They get so much hate from the constant cutscenes and characters constantly coming up to guide you as you can't walk places by yourself..it's very hand holdy which makes people feel insulted, it feels like they don't believe the audience is capable of not getting lost on a straight path which is not a good feeling. Many didn't finish it because the constant cutscenes and lack of exploration/independence was a let down, I personally couldn't get all the way through it and needed a break but unfortunately my system broke so i can't finish it.
@@chendror872 Because Pokémon fanbase is that stupid lol, see Unova was hated, however those games are loved today. It's like a full circle every fvcking generation..

Corrently replaying the first one it's so much fun
I love the Alolan characters so much. Lillie's the best!
Before gen 7, I only heard about the occasional announcement or leak for gen 5 and gen 6. But the months before Sun and Moon's release was the first time I really started paying attention to any news related to a new Pokémon game's release, whether that be an official announcement or potential leak. I had never been more excited for a new Pokémon game than I was for Sun and Moon, and that's why gen 7 is my favourite Pokémon generation to this day.
I really like some of the ultra beast and honestly happy to see you play this game
Honestly sword and shield grew on me a lot. after doing monotype runs I realized how cool this game could be, specially with dlc. Probably the best game to do monotype nuzlocke runs ever and forever.
I think they put in Pelipper because this is the game it got a huge buff in the form of it's new Ability, Drizzle. You have no idea how good this thing is until you see it battle. It is best Drizzle-mon and I will hear nothing against it!

I do agree, battling Kukui at the end was epic as all hell. Loved that.
As for the "hand holding", well....do remember that the character we play as (like in all Pokemon games) is a child. Yeah, they could have cut back a bit, but still, we do play as a child.
Just because our character IS a child doesn't exactly mean we should be treated as one..In the zelda games you often play a child yet still get plenty of room to explore and be independent; I understand trying to make it realistic as no kid would be left alone, but no one likes being suffocated like that and treated like a dumb 4 year old so in the end it's a bad decision..good in theory bad in practice y'know? Not to mention plenty of other pokemon games layed off us and gave us exploration so suddenly restricting us like this isn't good and WILL cause people to be upset.
As much as I know playing this game pains you, I'm glad you finally made this video, because (hot take) I actually do like it 😂
Not quite. That price is written in Australian currency. For example when a game costs 60 in America it costs 80 here but that's actually the same price when translated.
i am aware how currency works it’s just a joke
Yes love these games! Can't wait to watch this one! Edit ouch didnt know you hated this one so much 😂 sun and moon are really good games, ultra sun and moon have tons of content and a pretty decent story so I dont get the hate!
I personally am with him - I seriously can't stand SM/USUM. Or XY. Or SwSh. Ooor BDSP.
Also don't like gens 1, 2, 3 and 4 _all too_ much... gen 5 is dope though. And I unapologetically love ORAS.
Too slow pacing. Red and blue are pick up and play, sun and moon is like sword and shield...it’s more like reading a book than playing a game. Not just that it’s too text based, but the player is guided along the story, rather than being allowed to explore at their own will
I personally think USUM are what Sun and Moon should have been in the first place. Though the cutscenes can get annoying, Ultra Moon is by far my favorite pokemon game.
@@goldh2o543 try red or blue, you can be at the 6th gym by the time you would finsish the introduction of anything from gen 6 or 7

I started my first nuzlocke of ultra sun the other day. And I agree that there are many many negatives to this game. But I’ll tell you right now it is easily the hardest in the series. Those elite trainers slap harder then my dad. And don’t even get me started on the island challenges. I recommend everyone try to nuzlocke this game. It will make you cry. And not just the fact that if you white out you have to rewatch all the cutscenes lol
Ultra Necrozma is especially difficult. Affection carried me through that battle.
