Thank you, Tony, for the fascinating behind the scenes tour of how these large acrylic face mounts are produced. Your image is absolutely fantastic and very worthy of a large, expensive mount! I’m hoping that you’ll show us, perhaps in a future video, your thinking process in deciding where you chose to hang your art, and importantly how to properly light art to bring it to it’s full potential. Thanks again for the great video!
Eugene, Thank you for your most generous and kind words! That s a wonderful suggestion for a video! I will keep that in mind as I try to make more videos. Thanks for watching! Tony
This was absolutely fantastic!!!!...MAGNIFICENT!!
Thanks David! I appreciate you taking the time to watch! Tony
Totally enthralled with the photography and the process of preparation...beginning to end. Great job my friend!!!
Glenn Yee Thanks Glenn! Next time you are in town, I’ll take you around for a tour. I appreciate your support! Tony
What an awesome exposure!
Thank you much! I appreciate you taking the time to comment! Tony
Fantastic Video Tony. I learned a lot from you visiting the print shop. Now that is a place I will use for large format printing and framing work both for myself and my clients! Thanks for the tip. Great Work as usual. Keep making more videos! Your Friend, John.
John D Thank you for the kind words! I enjoy helping people out! I appreciate your support.Tony
Very nice! I've wondered why I couldn't get that quality of print at home. Now I know.
Thanks Michael! Tony
Really enjoyed this video - some serious skills gone into producing the fine art piece. Never looked into anything like this but thoroughly enjoyed it! Thank you!
Thanks Nas! I appreciate you taking the time to stop by! Tony
Very nice Tony. Thanks for sharing and taking your time to bring us this in-depth video. Now you know we are going to want more videos from you. :-) Congrats
Thanks, MacNeal
Macneal, Thanks so much for watching! I appreciate the kind remarks. I would enjoy very much to produce more videos but time and resources are limiting factors for me. Tony
Great video and great image! I can't image how good it looks in person!
Thanks Tommy! I appreciate you taking the time to watch! The print definitely looks much better in person. Tony
In my darkroom days in order to fight dust on my 6x6 negatives, I did the obvious things like trying to keep the room as dust free as possible. But the real life saver was an hour before printing I would run a humidifier. That had the effect of greatly reducing static electricity and also settling the dust in the air onto the table and counter surfaces where it could then be (mostly) eliminated. I'm guessing that the air is dry in Las Vegas so this might help.
Mark, that's a fantastic idea! Thanks for dropping by! Tony
@@tonysantophotography Hope it helps. Of course, you may have to adjust the humidifying time to account for the size of the space.
Very impressive, very inspiring Tony, great video! It is always nice to see something new from you! Thumps up, keep it up! Greetings from Germany to LV
Thanks Sebastian! I appreciate you taking the time to watch! Tony
THX, - Most say this video is a MASTERPIECE to show the Mastodonic work to make a FRAME of a GREAT Photo ... ::: ;) /// McRoman...
Thanks McRoman! I appreciate you watching!
im definitely going to mark this page
Impressive image Tony. I have 2 questions. How does the lamination effect the archival quality of the print? And secondly, couldn't the lamination take the place of the glazing?
The print is basically sandwiched between 2 pieces of plexiglass; an adhesive film is used to affix all the 3 pieces. This produces a crystal clear presentation of the image. Thanks for watching!
Very Very VERY interesting ! Thanks you for sharing it.
Thanks for taking the time to watch Alberic! Tony
38:40 Use the proper evonik optical plexiglas and you will get no scratches. Only cheap normal acrylic will get scratches.
I did watch -- start to finish. Thats incredible. I'm entering into my own printing by just purchasing a Canon 4100 printer. I can see the process with be quite different and thus the result -- not in the same league -- that said, your work is inspirational. I feel like I have lots to learn.
Thank you for watching; especially all the way through! If you have any questions, please let me know. I'm here to help. Tony
Same here with the Pro4100,, where did you find the Hahnemühle paper charts for the Canon names in the menu? I am finding that information near impossible to find even from Hahnemühle itself but I know it exists.
Cool comparison! Please could you make a comparison huge print between a drum scan and a scan with a 45MP or higher digital camera at 1:1? Would like to see
James, I think that's a wonderful idea! I don't have access to a 45+ MP camera but if you have connections I would definitely pursue the concept and produce the video. Thanks for watching! Tony
Great video! I have been working in print lab the past few years, I would love to get some experience in a shop like thissome day.
It's very interesting work. I hope you are able to secure work in this area. Thanks for watching! Tony
Vegas is very dry, therefore more dust. Not quite so bad in Albuquerque, but still a lot of dust. But I shoot digital, which helps somewhat.
Yes, it is incredible how much dust can accumulate on things inside of a house in just a short time! Thanks for watching! Tony
Awesome video!
Thank you!
I was Like #1000 🤩 Great Overview ! … 4 years ago .. What was Framing Price then vs. NOW .? ☮️❤️💪🏼🎨🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
This is a good question. Four years ago maybe 5-6K; now maybe 6-7K? I'm not working for NatGeo anymore so I'm not really up to date on my pricing. Thanks for dropping by the channel!
Thanks Tony for sharing...what brand is the blue tape you use for scanning ?
My pleasure! I use the 3M version found at any local home improvement store. Thanks for watching and commenting! Tony
Chola Cactus!!! =D
Welcome back Tony
Thanks Jerry! It feels good to publish again.
great episode, just the background music is too load
My apologies Bert. I will try to improve this aspect of my future videos. Thanks for watching! Tony
Tony Santo Photography nothing negative! Really love your content!
Great vid! Worth it if you have a photo of a lifetime or the customer. But man, this must be expensive.
Thanks Thomas! Yes, making prints in this fashion costs a fortune. I appreciate you taking the time to watch!
What kind of lamination was put on the Fujiflex Supergloss print? And was this then back-mounted to acrylic instead of face mounted?
Steve, the lamination put on the Fujifilm Flex print is the adhesive for the acrylic. Face-mount refers to the acrylic and not the print. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching! Tony
@@tonysantophotography So is their plexiglass/acrylic on the front of the print? I'm trying to see if there is a way to display Fujiflex without either glass (which is too costly for big prints) or plexiglass/acrylic. I typically only print with Fujiflex and then use the TrueLife acrylic face mounting. I'm trying to see if there are any alternatives. Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks for such a great video!
@@steveboice Steve, you can always choose to have a piece of acrylic mounted to the back of the print for an ultra smooth appearance. Tony
Alex Honnold converted to photography !
I seem to be getting that comparison a lot! Although I do not rock climb. Thanks for stopping by! Tony
Spot on
Thanks Dr. Tony. I live in Vegas, too, and had no idea about Max Art Productions; for my work I use DigitalSilver and Richard Photo Lab. I'll have to give Max a look. Did you send your negs to Strickland for drum scanning? Great work!
Hi Mathew! Yes, Michael Strickland scanned my negative in this video. I did acquire a drum scanner recently but I haven't got it up and running yet. Thanks for watching! Maybe we'll see each other around town. Tony
Very good video.
Thanks so much Bob! Tony
Try mounting A 33x96” -
Incredible work, What would be the cost of getting something of that side print and frame as you shown here in 2021? Not how much the photo work cost on the gallery but having an image of mine going thru similar finishing. Thanks for the great video
Alexandra, It's always best to contact MaxArt Productions for pricing specific to your artwork, however, you should expect a $3,000-4,0000 range for the printing, lamination, mounting, liner, and frame. Thanks for watching! Tony
Shouldn’t you also have shifted the gamma [at 11:10]? To have your highlights more centered, resulting in a more balance exposure, as this can’t be resurected once scanned? Although I guess at 24-bit maybe you can? But I would still think having the bulk of the information (the peak of the histogram) more right of center still? At least that is how I would set exposure, would appreciate if you could comment ... Thank you
Johan, I really appreciate your comment. The truth is I hadn't thought about shifting the gamma correction. I'll have to try that out on future images . Thanks for the suggestion! Tony
I just notice that the customer is given a white glove to prevent fingerprints but the workers were never wearing gloves all throughout the procedure.
John Paul Caponigro once told a group of us that the white glove is to give the impression of value :)
The sound dropped out @ 28:07 secs. What the? Had to turn on "captions", to view additional footage.
Something went wrong during the upload. My apologies. Tony
Tony Santo Photography maybe re-upload?
@@David-uw3vc David, I think that's a good idea. I just need to remove all of the music. Thanks for the suggestion! Tony
Do you NEED large format in order to make prints of that size that look nice when viewed up close?
David, every photographer chooses a process that is best-suited to their style. I choose large format because I enjoy the process. Thanks for watching. Tony
Could it have mitigated some of the differences discussed at [23:25]?
Wonderful video, Tony! Do you know if NatGeo sells the frames themselves? If not donated to you, where would you have acquired the frame? Thanks, Landon.
Landon, I believe you can purchase the frames from Nat Geo Fine Art or go to www.romamoulding.com or fotiou.com. Thanks for watching! Tony
Landon email me at nick@maxartpro.com and we can quote you cost on the frame.
what happened to audio in 28 min in?
David, Wow! Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I'll need to fix this. Thanks, Tony
Pretty scary seeing him touch the image with his bare hands
Fortunately the concentrated isopropyl alcohol is great for removing fingerprints. Thanks for watching! Tony
My God how much would those guys charge normally for that framing, $1500???
Neil, a piece like this would run roughly $4-5 K. It takes about 8 hours of labor to produce a piece from start to finish. Thanks for watching!
@@tonysantophotography Museum prices. I was waiting for the bit where the guy looked at the glass side and said, ' ^&*+ I have do undo the whole thing as there's a hair I missed!'
Very surprised just how close the flatbed scan was to the Drum scam. Leaves me to wonder how much closer they would be if you wet scanned the film on the flatbed.
Terry, I was surprised as well. I will say that the difference in the print was a bit more noticeable than the scan. I think it would be interesting to do a wet scan on the flatbed but I do not have that capability. Thanks for watching! Tony
Tony Santo Photography I have the Epson 850 and now want to buy the wet adapter. Your scans in the video look great. I mostly shoot 4x5 Black and White for my darkroom work but a little color scanning is in the plans. Thank you
@@terrywbreedlove Terry, that sounds great. Please let me know how you like the wet scanning. Thanks, Tony
With no ads? There's an ad less than 2 minutes in.
This whole thing is an ad...
Unfortunately, YT adds advertisements at their discretion. Thanks, Tony
@@tonysantophotography YT didn't play any ads, your whole video was an ad. It's fine, you're getting your work done and you're representing a company that obviously does quality work, but you were compensated for your video work with free services and product. That's a form of payment for the advertisement you created for the company, aka, the entire video. Just be honest about it instead of trying to hide it from your viewers or patrion or who ever it is supporting your channel.
@@GettingNegative I'm not hiding anything from my viewers. At the beginning and ending of the video I clearly state who the sponsors of the video are.
What was the cost of this work?
William, the printing, lamination and mounting of the photo on acrylic at this size will run about $2000. The frame can run about $2-3K. Thanks for watching! Tony
When you see the amount of work involved you can appreciate the high cost of these big prints. It's a pity sound was lost for almost 4 minutes.
My apologies for the sound. Thanks for watching! Tony
28:10 Dust is distributed from top to bottom and from right to left. lol. that's not how you do it dust free. 29:40 shows ho to do it properly.
Beautiful work. Only detractor...background music nearly drowns you out. Subscribed.
Thanks Christopher. Any of my newer videos will not have any distracting music. I appreciate the feedback. Tony
Unfortunately, the sound cuts out at around 28 mins.
Barry, I do apologize for that. Thanks for stopping by. Tony
what is the Name of the ARTWORK
Sonoran Delight. Thanks for watching! Tony
Uhm. Cost?
I would recommend contacting MaxArt Productions for current pricing. This video was sponsored and thus I did not pay for any of the labor or materials. Thanks, Tony
Wow, you were serious when you said it's an in depth video! Excellent presentation Tony, thanks a lot, it's very informative. And the photographs are outstanding as well!
In case you have not seen it already, Nick Carver did a video on scanning large format film on Epson scanners: czcams.com/video/mfGKd_AEZtY/video.html. You might find it useful. I am very surprised you find it so easy to avoid newton's rings. Do you use any kind of shims to offset the mounting glass from the scanner glass?
Aram Hăvărneanu Aram, Thank you for the generous comments. I have seen Nick’s video and I think he presents some interesting alternatives. I do not use any shims whatsoever. Truth be told, I had trouble making Newton rings for the video! I am sold on drum scanning so for anything I’ll print I definitely would go that route. Thanks for watching! Tony
OMFG, what a crazy soundtrack! Nothing to hear beneath that bumz-bumz-bumz!
I’m sorry but your printer is wrong: C-print is not the standard in the fine art world.
Everybody has pretty much moved to pigment prints.
It is archival (it will last a lot longer than a C-print), it has a much much bigger gamut and color accuracy. And it has a much better resolution.
Thanks for dropping by the channel. I appreciate your support.
I hate that I can't see any difference with my s*** monitor!
All that hand touching is frightening - I might have punched somebody... But gorgeous image !
Ha Ha! Thanks for watching! Tony
photography is all about marketing. The image itself is not special in anyway
I really wanted to watch your video because the content is interesting, but your editing made it impossible for me. The way you transitioned scenes, made the screen wiggle, and the way the music was louder than your voice made the video unwatchable for me. I couldn't even get a minute in. Please, less is more with editing
Jessie, I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the video. I agree that "less is more" and have made efforts in my recent videos to improve upon that. Thank you for reaching out to me and I hope that you might be interested in some of my other content. Sincerely, Tony
Music is distracting
The music is so off-putting for me, I didn't watch. (I know, oh well too bad for me). Just letting you know.
this music playing is terrible.
i almost cant listen to you
My apologies. All my newest videos do not have music to avoid this issue. Thanks.
Boring image. To many ads. Stop.
Kent, Thank you for stopping by the channel and commenting. Thankfully, there is plenty of content on CZcams for you to choose from. Hopefully, you can find content that is in more congruence with your liking; or perhaps you may consider creating content for CZcams that you feel people might enjoy as well. All the best, Tony
