In this video Patrick Hall attempts to print massive photo prints and assemble them by hand. By printing your photographs on different high quality fabric, you can print HUGE photos that are much larger than anything you can find listed on some of the most popular photo printing websites. With a little wood working, Patrick built these large wooden frames exactly the size he needed for his living room. By pulling the fabric taught and stapling it to the edge of the frame, these prints look smooth and professional. Finally, each print was filled with rockwool safe and sound insulation which acts as a sound treating acoustic tile. Studies have shown no. Thin fabric and rugs help with high frequencies but it's the thicker rock wool that helps with mids and deep bass which while you can't always hear them, they compound to create standing waves and all sorts of issues. Since the fabric print is thicker than the 2 mil plastic, the highs will be dampened by the fabric itself. I didn't believe this myself but try this experiment. Put two trashbags over your stereo speakers and see if you can hear a big difference. The plastic is negligible and doesn't stop many of the sound waves. The Rock Wool is what's doing the heavy lifting. -P

What a great video! Unfortunately, I don't have that much wall space but I'd love to do some 3X5 feet. I checked with that printer but their website is a little confusing. I will definitely get some prints done. Thanks for this.
This is a great idea! Well done video. A couple thoughts: Wrapping the Rock Wool in plastic is probably significantly reducing the sound energy absorption. Secondly, although the materials you choose were great for printing, were they the best perforation to allow the sound energy to penetrate? Lastly, wood is fairly expensive and heavy - would there be some cheaper & lighter alternatives in the plastics world? Certainly not at HomeDepot, but maybe worth an investigating for the future?
I commented on another post about the plastic wrap. There is a sound treatment youtube channel and the guy has done extensive testing on the topic. Basically the plastic is so thin that it doesn't affect the frequencies below 3khz or so. It has absolutely no effect on longer wavelengths like bass and lower human voice which cause the major rumble. It might have an effect on higher frequencies but those are easily absorbed by the fabric print itself.
Here in PR we don't have many options. They use a ton of PVC here because of humidity and termites but PVC is actually way more expensive than wood and probably about the same weight. They also use a lot of steel studs here but that's really difficult to work with (for me at least) and it wouldn't allow me to staple the fabric. I never weighed the prints but I think they weighed less than 50 pounds which at this size was totally acceptable IMO. And $300 a print was well within the budget I wanted to spend. Heck you can't even get a mass produced piece of art this size from Marshalls for less than $300. -P
They look awesome, I think the only thing I would do personally is to get those art gallery type ceiling lights that can perfectly light a rectangle on the prints.
Oh yeah I'd love even better lighting, but unfortunately my ceiling is concrete and it only had 2 receptical boxes for 2 hanging fans so I had to get creative by taking out a fan and hanging a 3 light spotlight. It's also at the absolute peak of the ceiling which is like 20' high. Standing on a 15' ladder to install the lights was not a very peaceful feeling! -P
I wish you hadn't skipped how you by the border pieces of wood on. Are they overhanging the actual frame? Very cool art though.
Yes, they overhang just slightly to give it a slight lip. I just cut the pieces to form 90 degree angles and used finishing nails to hammer them into place. Then I speckled/painted over the nails to hide them the best I could. I wish I had a miter saw to cut 45 degree angles on all the wood but the cuts are a little more primitive. -P

This is a great idea that I will definitely try out. On a different note, I remember when you relocated to Puerto Rico and I believe you rented a big house. After watching some of your recent videos, I assumed you had moved back to the mainland. However, this latest video has clarified things for me. I would be interested in seeing a video where you discuss the pros and cons of living in PR, as well as your future plans regarding staying there. Mahalo, Ron.
Yeah we should do a recap video. Basically the mansion we were renting went up for sale and it was an insane amount of money for what the house seemed worth. Then it sold to a friend of ours and we had to move out. Then the house value doubled and it was a horrible decision not to buy. But Lee and I bought separate homes in our same neighborhood and have two separate studios now. -P

I have had large format printing on fabric done by Ripstop By the Roll in the US. It was printed at 58" x 108" for about $70.
Man their sample fabric page says coming soon 11/10/2018. How long ago did you print with them? -P

Saw you were living in PR, I was thinking of doing the same. I got scared off from Zillow because all homes had bars on the windows. I have been living around Jackson Hole most of my life and with reduced income at partial retirement I'm looking for an affordable alternative but after living in a nearly crime free area the window bars on Zillow gave me pause. What is the reality of living there I am crushed that winter is starting to make my arthritis intolerable.
Loved the video, what an amazing idea and cost. Somewhere that doesn't need as much insulation after watching this I was thinking that wrapping them on Blueboard instead would make them both easier and cheaper. ??? Possibly too flimsy.

Good hearing from you. Safety in PR is all relative. San Juan can be super dangerous just like any big city in the US, but you can also have a $5k - $10k a month condo with an amazing view and private security. If you are serious about moving to PR, I'd look at property in Dorado, Palmas Del Mar (where I am), or Rincon. Those areas (and prob others) all have nice gated and double gated communities. Unfortunately Zillow hardly works here and most listings are kept private by realtors which makes no sense for the seller. I actually feel safer in my neighborhood here in PR than at the home I own in South Carolina. -P
Wondering how opaque the printed fabric is, if backlighting with LEDs would show through?
I can put a light back there and see. Getting even illumination would probably be tough though. -P
Congratulations on the paintings. One question: which camera did you use to print at that size? I assume a medium format. A tip: to have a better acoustic treatment of your living room, put a heavy carpet between the 2 sofas and one in front of the entrance door
Probable the D850. There is already a carpet between the two couches. Nothing in front of the entrance door though because it doesn’t have enough clearance for the door to go over the rug. -P
How light fast are the dyes used on these fabrics?
That I do not know. Is there a way to tell or a measurement? Are dyes only susceptible to UV light from natural light? Does reflected light degrade as much as direct light? -P
What resolution did you send them to print these sizes?
36 maybe cropped to 24 or 30ish -P

So, the question you did NOT answer is how did you get the print so large without pixelating?
I want to make a video about this but if you have 24,36, or 50 megapixel images, pixelization shouldn’t be a problem. You can see pixels in the sky of the marina image but only if you are looking closer than 2-3 feet. These prints are viewed more at 3-6 feet and you can’t resolve pixels at that distance. Lee did a great video about the number of megapixels required for a billboard and it turned out to be 3-4mp because you view them at such far distances. -P

I would consider reevaluating how high the frames have been hung. When you go into a gallery or museum, they don’t hang art halfway up the wall. It’s placed at a level for comfortable viewing. It’s more of a strain at home because most of the time your seated. I know there’s an urge to capitalize high ceilings, but over time, I think you’ll realize your images aren’t even in your line of sight.
They really aren't that high. The horizontal image is perfectly balanced with more space above it than below, and the vertical image will have a live edge wood table below it so it will have balance. As a huge fan or interior design and aesthetic, I def took the placement into consideration and mocked it up in Photoshop before making a final decision (along with picking out the prints as well). -P
