Also Trevor was a really bad character because he had no depth. His entire personality was built around being part of the LGBT community... He had absolutely nothing aside from that, and all his friends were the same way. Mickey, even before he came out, had a personality aside from his homophobic and gay aspects... He has always been a person... Trevor was never a person

      @albicn8775 Před 4 lety +249

Trevor’s character started to annoy me really quickly. He never had a personality aside from being gay and transgender. Really, his only purpose was to indirectly educate those watching about LGBT issues. As a lesbian, I’m 100% fine with that. However, the writers used Trevor to ram LGBT stuff down our throats and it was just too much. Unlike Trevor, Mickey’s storylines didn’t always revolve around him being gay as he actually had a backstory. But that’s just my opinion.

Even if they had written Trevor better, he still never would have been an adequate replacement for Mickey. Mickey had a formative role in Ian’s growth, as well as his character arc. In the season 2 he is more friendly with Ian and shows that is not as evil as he made apparent when he can't kill Frank. He was only afraid. In the 3 he is not afraid to kiss Ian and is full in love with him. Definitely, Mickey discovers that Ian is the love of his life. And in the 4, he was incredibly tender when he defends Ian of a sexual predator and when he discovered his disease. To me these 2 scenes are more than enough to want Mickey to be endgame.

Trevor made himself feel better and boosted his sense of superiority by sleeping with conventionally less attractive guys, which is absolutely disgusting. He took advantage of Ian's manic episode to promote his own work (which by the way is the one thing about him that I really appreciate). Finally, he didn't care enough, or rather he didn't give a fuck, about Ian being off his meds, and just told him off, left and never came back.

Not to mention the writers knowing from the start that in order to try and replace Mickey they needed Mickey to come back to have an official 'end' to Gallavich. Which consisted of Mickey breaking out of prison, Ian never being able to get him out of his head, going with Mickey despite 'moving on with Trevor,' and then left what could've been one of the best storylines for s8 literally at the border with little-to-no reason whatsoever. That didn't make us want to see Trevor, that just made us HATE HIM MORE bc we were reminded how BEAUTIFUL Gallavich is.

i get incredibly pissed thinking about all the opportunities trevor got in ian’s life.... we got to see him meet monica, he actually spoke to fiona a lot on his own, we got to see them more than make out and explore boundaries... all of these things that we never got to see mickey do... genuinely made me very upset because trevor was never someone i saw ian actually getting with for a long period of time. trevor was always more focused on other shit, ian had to chase him and it was incredibly uneventful and their chemistry was horrible... i missed mickey a lot during those seasons not just for their relationship but also because mickey’s comedy and personality is what carried the show a lot of the time when the plot fell through. season 6 is incredibly uninteresting and season 8/9 is really just their last attempt before finally bringing mickey back to make ian interesting, but ended up giving him such an out of character storyline it hurt to watch
if we want to even discuss trevors character, he was actually a huge asshole to ian at first for no fucking reason. he would get pissed at the smallest advances, or if ian didn’t understand something. he pressured ian into things he didn’t want to do. he told him to “get over it” when monica was around which btw i still want to slam his head into the floor thinking about that moment.. he’s pretty much just “ian boyfriend” and that’s it. he has his own life but we aren’t given much about him as a human other than the fact that he sucks... hell, even characters like geneva had more growth than trevor did... the writers took ALL this time to give us lots of mickey characterization and make us love him and then took him away and replaced him with a wet paper towel excuse of a love interest

I just really disliked his character. Nothing to do with him being with Ian (though that made cringe really hard at how badly they were written together). But Trevor was a real non entity who was only memorable for being trans (nothing else). His character was boring, he was defensive and judgemental, completely one note and never developed at all. And as soon as he told Ian to forgive Monica and grow up I wanted to punch him in the face. I was like "you have no idea what this woman put Ian and his family through...how DARE you tell him he should just grow up and move on" From then on nothing he did would make me like him.
He felt very much a token character added to fill some quota because he was so poorly written that he felt like a last minute rush job. I mean not even a last name?????? Also he had zero on screen chemistry with Ian. Plus he couldn't be a long-haul guy for Ian with how quick he disappeared when Ian had a manic episode and went off his meds. Mickey stayed with Ian durint the first manic/depression cycle he witnessed. Did all he could to look after him. Didn't blame him for what he did whilst manic and was so worried about him. Even got him the help he needed and after a little blip where it overwhelmed him, he still went back to Ian to help and support him.
Its probably because Ian and Mickey have a lot of history and been through so much together. There is no one who could replace Mickey, especially not snooze fest Trevor that just made me want to skip ahead to scenes he wasn't in he was that dull.
And for the record, Ian and Mickey are perfect for each other. Been through so much and grown together as people and as a couple. I am so glad they got married. It was amazing. Such love between them.
Its only with Ian does Mickey let his guard down, its only with Ian can Mickey show his loving/caring/tender side. Its only with Mickey that Ian feels loved and safe. Its only with Mickey does Ian feel worthy of love, that only Mickey can love all parts of him and he loves all parts of Mickey in return.
They know each other inside out. Know each others faults and how to take care of each other. They are each others rocks. The one they can rely on to be there.
Are they perfect? Fuck no. Are they perfect for each other? Fuck yes!!
    Bring on Season 11!!!

this was literally beautiful, i agree 110%.
trevor was so boring, there was literally nothing interesting about him, besides his sexuality, i really like how they included a transgender man, however that was definitely all he bought to the table.
i agree completely with what you said about the difference between mickey and trevor's reponse to ian's bipolar disorder - the second things started to get difficult again for ian, and when he started going off his meds, trevor because judgemental, rude, and all round full of himself, he acted as though ian was out of control and always blamed ian for literally everything - like how he treated ian like shit for wanting to help that homeless girl and allowing her to stay at his house, but also when he tried to belittle ian's problems with monica, and get him to forgive her just because she was there and she apologised. mickey never acted that way - bearing in mind, ian stole his child and ran off with him, mickey heard nothing back from ian, yet he worried his ass off and all he cared about was ian's safety and wellbeing, not caring about the fact he was bipolar, but wanting to love him completely, and that is what he did and that is why mickey is superior.
another thing was when he got all synical and judgemental when ian met mickey and almost went to mexico with him - yeah, ian shouldn't have cheated on trevor, and it was quite a crazy thing, but it's ians life, and mickey is the guy who had always been there for him, through thick and thin, how is it ian's fault that he wanted to see the guy who loved him so much?
trevor was also judgemental about mickey, calling him an ex-convict and crazy and whatnot, even though he had no idea what type of person mickey was, nor the connection he and ian had.
i am so happy mick and ian got married at the end lmfao, they deserved it.

I also really like how now that they’re married, it’s not like Mickey is centered around Ian and Ian gets his own story with other people, so far it’s pretty much Mickey is centered around Ian and Ian is centered around Mickey, they HAVE the same storyline and share it together and I’m glad they did it like that

I don’t know, I just could never really like Trevor as a person either, at least not in relation to Ian. He was great for trans rep and had a noble job, but that doesn’t necessarily make you a good person. The way he approached Ian from the jump, pressuring him into a romantic relationship when Ian probably did just need a friend was fucked up imo. “I have enough friends.” It just came off as manipulative to me and Ian is such a people pleaser that he went along. And maybe that’s why I could never get over the feeling of it being forced, both within the narrative (like maybe Ian feeling like he should give this guy a chance) and from a writer’s perspective of using Trevor as a mouthpiece to introduce LGBT issues- which was also forced and awkward imo. Because when Mickey came back into his life Ian jumped at the chance to be with him again, that shows he was just waiting to FEEL that kind of energy. And then going back to Trevor was like him trying to make amends for the shitty way that all went down, but you could tell his heart wasn’t in it. Trevor even mentioned loving Ian and Ian was just... 😶 *crickets*. Also the lack of chemistry between the actors was evident. Maybe it would have been less obvious had Mickey not come back because Cam and Noel have such amazing electric chemistry that blows everyone else out of the water, but he did and as viewers we can’t help but compare.
All in all, Mickey’s character development, chemistry with Ian, lines, acting, all of it completely irreplaceable and for the show to attempt it with two bland No Last Names was just terribly misguided.

I find it very interesting that when people defend or excuse Trevor as a character, it's done in as if defending an actual person, not defending him as a written character in the context of a show like Shameless with its reliance on outlandish archetypes. Statements that kind of just shrug off his literal character flaws. "Trevor is a great guy, but...". I've never seen a character so completely removed from the focus of the criticisms. Just disliking him with Ian as opposed to Mickey does a disservice to how obtusely written into every scene he is. People didn't dislike a boring person, they dislike a boring character being manipulated into an absurdist ensemble that has mever required a foil before. Nobody in this show needs a straight man (so to speak), the audience was never looking for one. Trevor was never needed for levity, and so his normalcy is out of place and bewildering. I get that if an actor leaves, the show must go on, but they could have done better if the writing team wasn't so focused on lashing out at fans. His character comes off as pretentious and preachy because basically his character IS the writers preaching. They're telling us Trevor is elevated above the characters and scenarious he's presented with, and we should love how conventional and healthy he is by comparison to Actually Problematic Character In Hindsight. It's insultingly obvious what the point of this character was. Like, huh? Shameless never had a problem with Problematic before (or since).

Noel wanted to leave the show so his spot had to be filled or at least attempted to!The dynamic between Ian and Mickey is dramatic, tragic and electric! You can sense their chemistry even if they're not in the same scene! And also the lovestory between them always felt unfinished the way it ended in season 5.

Also them making Mickey out to be the bad guy after Ian broke up with over HIM NOT WANTING TO BE TREATED FOR HIS BIPOLAR? that break up didn’t even make any sense because Ian started taking his medicine shortly after. here is why mickey and ians relationship is amazing. they both come from backgrounds where being a nice guy or gay got you jumped. especially mickey who comes from a home thats waaay less supportive of being a homosexual than Ians family. It would only make sense that ian show more affection than mickey because hes gotten a lot of support and has accepted who he is, Mickey has not. well, at least not into the later seasons. Mickey cared for Ian but he was raised that it was very wrong and homosexuals should get jumped, so its a process for him. he cared about ian but didnt know how to show it so he used anger. This also made every scene were Mickey is kind to Ian and actually shows how much he cares, much more powerful. Despite the problem of mickey not accepting hes gay, he still manages to care for ian and in a normal relationship we see that a lot (like trever or caleb for instance) but when its coming from Mickey, thats true love.

After Ian was on meds and was more stable you could see it in his face he was truly never as happy. Whenever he was with Mickey his true smile came out and Ian was never happier than when he was with Mickey at any point in his life. Mickey isn’t replaceable! You can’t replace someone who loved someone so much he went to jail for them even though Ian never asked, Mickey felt like it was the right thing to do to defend Ian and it cost him years in prison. Which was stupid but he felt like that was what’s right, you don’t see anyone else taking it to that level.

I totally didn’t realize Trevor was supposed to be a “new Mickey” because no one could replace Mickey. However, as someone else mentioned on this video, I feel Caleb and Trevor were necessary for Ian to feel somewhat normal and grow up a bit. His spent his teens being preyed upon by grown men. As much as I love Mickey, they had one of the most volatile relationships, which no one, especially a kid, should have experienced. (While we all like Mickey, he did beat the shit out of Ian and Lip in the past.) Caleb and Trevor were his chances to experience “normal” relationships. Yes, I know Caleb cheated but that’s not abnormal, just fucked up. He realized, “Wow, this is what it’s like not to get hit and go on actual dates.” I actually liked Trevor but he slid into Ian’s life so damn fast. These relationships just reinforced to Ian that Mickey would always be number one. Plus, it was fun way watching Ian go through his “hoe phase” as a consensual adult like most people do in their 20s.

I do think ian and trevor's relationship was necessary. Mickey was the only person his age Ian had ever "dated" before, and that in and of itself was an incredibly bumpy ride through an incredibly hard part of Ian's life. His quest for normalcy and acceptance, through dating around and discovering himself, was part of his development, and he needed it to truly realize that what he had with mickey wasn't just a teenage fling. It also gave ian a chance to flesh out his character beyond just being an army nut and bipolar. The fact that he says all this, trying to convince himself that he doesn't want to go back only to jump into mickey's arms the first chance he gets is a turning point for him.he's experienced normalcy, he's dated around, and in the end he just has to come back. You can't ride the plane without a little bit of turbulence.

    @oriana_fortunato Před 4 lety +4

And for the people who think Mickey was bad for Ian:
If I remember correctly, Mickey let Ian live in his house and took care of him for two seasons, especially when he found out he was bipolar??? He accepted it when Ian made forced him to come out to his dad or he would lose Ian (I am not blaming Ian for forcing him to come out, I am seeing it as a: look all the hard things he did for Ian after Ian went through hard things for Mickey).
The only reason he and Ian broke up was because Ian's illness led him to the decision that he should break up with Mickey... and then Mickey went to prison, and then to Mexico... he didn't leave him just because. Ian broke his heart and they also had to get rid of him because Noel had other projects.
You could argue that Mickey was the one that triggered Ian's bipolar disorder because of that awful fight they had in season 3 where the writers show you Ian crying broken in bed, and then he decides to join the army cause Mickey just married his hooker. And Mickey was still in denial because of all that internalized homophobia and he wanted to tell Ian not to go but he was still scared of his dad and himself.
You could also argue that Ian and Mickey's relationship was always kind of toxic, and I mean, you wouldn't be wrong but... let me remind you, this is Shameless, everyone is screwed up. But it wasn't like their relationship was Fiona and Jimmy/Steve's. Mickey grew up in a house where his mom left, his dad beat them up, was always in prison, when he wasn't he was killing people and literally doing crime, WHEN HE GOT DRUNK HE CLIMBED ON HIS DAUGHTER'S BED AND RAPED HER AND BEAT HER UP BECAUSE HE THOUGHT IT WAS HIS WIFE.
Like... are you expecting him 1. not to be afraid of his dad
    2. to have grown up knowing what a healthy relationship is??
I'm sorry to disappoint the people who think Mickey should be the picture child of "my family was hard but I was not influenced by them in any way". Do you know what it is like to grow up in an abusive household? Maybe you do, and then you know it's not easy. Also let's not forget Mickey was a boy. His dad is a walking advertisement of toxic masculinity, and he was never straight. Imagine growing up gay (or bi, but I'm pretty sure he's gay) in that household. Terry is the kind of dad that WOULD accidentally kill you when he was drunkenly bashing you because you were gay.
Are we forgetting what Ian says here? He was forced to let Svetlana fuck him at gunpoint. He was raped by a prostitute at gunpoint, his dad was holding the gun and the guy he had the only true feelings he'd ever felt for someone was forced to watch?
EVERYTHING IS FUCKED UP IN SHAMELESS.
Mickey didn't have a Fiona to protect them against Frank, and Frank was just selfish and neglectful, he wasn't violent.
So, if you think Mickey didn't turn out fucking amazing despite his upbringing then you are ignoring the first 4 seasons of the show.
    Okay I'm done.
But, you know, I didn't watch the first 4 seasons of shameless so many times, and waited 5 years for Ian and Mickey to be happy, to have people say Mickey doesn't deserve Ian.

You nailed it as soon as you asked, "What's Trevor's last name?" Trevor was destined to be a "one that got away" boyfriend. Mickey is Ian's heart and vice versa.

Trevor or not, I believe that you can’t just replace a character that had a 5 seasons development (even worse if he is basically everyone’s favorite you know). Plus, they tried to do it in the worst way possible

What bothered me about Trevor, as a social worker and someone who has worked in youth shelters in my own career, was all the immoral illegal shit he did with the youth in his care. Like the breaches of confidentiality alone. It made his character such a horrible “saviour”, the writers should have looked into what social workers actually do and what they aren’t allowed to do.

This may be a 'change my mind' situation but "breaking barriers" point seems to be such a stupid/toxic reason to want two characters to be together.
Ian shouldn't date a trans guy *because* he's a trans guy. Its like giving out trophies because a kid hasn't gotten a trophy in a while: sure it sucks they aren't as represented but if you give out one *because* of it its no longer representation; it's unearned, shallow and ultimately degrading because it assumes the only way they could be represented is by force/intervention.
If there are good trans stories, there will be good trans movies/characters; don't need to force it for the sake of quantity OR equality.

Representation doesn't need to be earned

    • @bumblerbree

@@animposter4971 it's not that trans people haven't earned representation, it's that the writers haven't earned praise for their representation of a trans character because he's not really given much of a shot since he was just a replacement for mickey he was basically doomed from the start. if they hadn't tried so hard to make him a love interest then we could've actually gotten to know him as a person rather than just watch ian learn about trans people so he can fuck one.
