  • My house burned down and I'm going to build a new one. I built the previous house and intend to build the new one again. I will do everything myself, so if you want to see how a house is built, join me. I will also build all the furniture as well as the kitchen, stairs, yes everything. Please subscribe to my channel if you want to come along on this journey. If you like the video, please press the like button, it helps me to reach out.
In this video, I build the entire foundation from scratch. We will dig, cast and brick. We make our own concrete and mortar and build everything by hand

I'm 32 and not very handy, but I have a fascination with carpentry. I'm half swedish and all the men in my family on that side from my grandparents age and older were all carpenters from Varmland and Vastmandland. I feel a calling to this profession and skill, but I feel too old to start. Building your own house has to be the most gratifying thing ever. I remember watching my grandfather build a deck for our pool when I was a little boy, and while everyone else's decks fell apart over the years, ours looked exactly the same 20 years later.

I am a carpenter, and I built the Welch stick chair where I am sitting now typing this comment. We carpenters do all sort of things, from a wooden spoon for the kitchen to an entire house like this guy is doing in the video. I would say all carpentry starts with two tables: a drafting table and a work table (workbench). Carpentry is already in your DNA, all you need is an small table in your garage to start with all the fun!

Here in the UK, when we place rebar in concrete, the lengths of rebar overlap by a minimum of 40 times it's diameter. So 1/4" rebar overlaps minimum 10". We also let the concrete company know what the concrete is for, because concrete with rebar has a higher ratio of cement. But I don't know the ratios for the different concretes, that's done at the concrete supplier.

In the US, most foundation codes require footings down below the frost line, so most houses in the northern part of the US have basements, as trenches are dangerous when that deep.
The other major change from the US is not doing the first floor as a deck, and assembling the walls flat, and tilting them up into place. Framing details also vary.

Don't understand how you starting building and seemed to get a permit later. And guessing they didn't require engineered drawings for either the foundation/house?
Having acted as an owner/bldr, really admire you could accomplish the entire house by yourself. Just amazing. And handling the video on top of all of the building is a task too.
    You da man!

Hi. I’ve been a carpenter for 26 years I Denmark. As you said we build the same way in the north. New regulation in Denmark say insulation i a wall haft to be a min.350mm. I build my own house a couple of years ago. It fallows the regulation for a 0 energy house. I have 440mm insulation i floors, 400mm in walls (same construction as you with the moisture barrier inside the insulation) and 600mm in selling.
Question here in DK we haft to have the house pressure tested to se if the barrier is air tight. Do you have the save rules in Sweden?
    The house look 👍

With small engines it's ALWAYS the carburetor! Even if something else is wrong, too.

Oh my God... Your House burning down is absolutely devastating. I felt my heart sink after you said that... Very akin to the death of a loved one...

Yes it is sad, there are many memories that are lost when a house burns down

Cause of your house fire? Electrical short caused it. Only other possible cause to an unoccupied house could be lightening. If it wasn’t storming at the time your house burned down…it was electrical.

Or someone who lived in the house while we weren't there... we don't know.

Does filling the foundation with rocks and gravel work as well as concrete below frost line? Also, nice job. You're ambitious and a craftsman.

The foundation should always be under ground if it´s not on bedrock as in my case.

Fantastic job doing that by yourself and that fast. Looking forward to the rest of the build. What are the blocks you used? Are they available in the USA?

    • @mindsparx1
      @mindsparx1  Před rokem

Good question, the blocks are lightweight concrete type but with clay balls in them. We have the type where you pour concrete in afterwards but I like these better, relatively cheap and easy to work with. I'm sure you have them but we still use materials like in the 70s except that it doesn't contain dangerous substances, you've probably moved on to other things.
