The history of Orban and Hungary missies the fact that after his first super majority he started to systematically demolish independent institutions, bureaus, independent media, changed the constitution, radically changed the election laws, gerry mandering, and later attackning science, higher education, and art as fields of independent voice. So it was nut just that well, they won in the second and third time, they were lucky. Nope.

As others have said above we've had higher inflation in the early 90s, just after the fall of communism and even that was nowhere near the hyper inflation of 1946 when they started to print bank notes with insanely high denominations. We've used the "pengő" back then and due to the high inflation first they introduced the "mill pengő" (million pengő) when they'd had to issue 10 billion (10^9) valued notes (so instead they called it 10 000 mill pengő, having a value of 10^10) and then the bill pengő (for billion pengő, where billion is interpreted on the long scale, so 10^12, so that would have been 1 000 000 millpengo, but the smallest note was 10 000 billpengo).
And then that went up to 100 000 000 (bill pengő), so 10^20 pengő. And then we switched to the Forint. According to Wikipedia the inflation was 10^16% *per month*.
As a Pole I really scratch my head when I follow Hungary's moves. On one hand we have a similar, confrontational attitude towards the EU, so we are thrown in the same basket by many observers.
However, Poland has been consistently detaching itself from Russia and alerting European partners about the danger it poses. In face of Putin's aggression we have supported Ukraine and lobbied for sanctions. Hungary does the exact opposite and Hungarians are relatively pro-Russian compared to the rest of the region.
It baffles me, since Hungary literally had an anti-communist uprising quashed by the Soviet Union in 1956. There are a lot of people today in Hungary that remember Soviet tanks driving into Budapest. How did they turn around to ambivalence towards Russian imperialism is beyond me.

more than 50 years passed since 1956 and our experience during communism was not as horrible as that of Czehslovaks/Poles/Romanians. There is a kind of nostalgia for the financial security and ease of life the old system provided, which Orban exploits of course.

Hungarians never forget, that the treaty of Trianon was imposed by the western powers and not by Russia. The Polish experience has been inverse.
As I am currently reading Why Nations Fail, Hungary's situation seems to resemble so much of an extractive system where the wealth is funneled to an elite. Considering the fact that an extractive system lacks the ability to sustain economic growth on its own, and that Fidesz is running out of options for where to draw wealth from without switching back to an inclusive economic system that would come at the expense of the businessmen and Fidesz which all benefit from the extractive model that htey have built, I see no way that Fidesz will be able to save Hungary's economy and that the Fidesz elite will rather bring down the country than give up their privileged position.

There is no Fidesz elite, but money saving project from the goal of the state...Very huge misunderstanding and misinfirmation about everything you on the west know about Hungary. As a Hungarian, I have to inform, that it is very unlikely, that Orban become allies with China while it is literally impossible, that Hungary and Russia has any positive relations currently. That's because Russia put Hungary to Russia's Unfriendly Countries List and if a country is on that list, that country is hostile towards Russia and to it's citizens - according to the Russian government. Also, most of Hungary's trade is dependant on trades with the EU or the USA, so if Orban would turn away from them, Hungary's economy would be immediately in crisis. Many people think, that Orban and Hungary is pro-Russian, but this is more complicated, than it seems. Orban is not pro-Russian, he has other goals. During his now 13-year-long rule, Orban eridicated democracy from Hungary, most of the media-outlets here are in his hands. He uses the media to brainwash millions of Hungarians and manipulating them with false statements, that the West is the enemy, while Orban steals all the public money and enrich himself and his oligarch friends. He does this for years. He doesn't care about Russia, he doesn't care about the West, he doesn't care about Hungary, he only cares about, how he can manipulate others inside and outside of Hungary and then take all the benefits and enrich himself and his oligarch friends. This is the real truth.

Also, somebody wrote in a comment, that Hungary became a "pariah" in the EU, that other EU countries don't treat Hungary well and that is the reason looking elsewhere for friends. My only problem with this is that it is completly missing, why started the EU treating Hungary as a "black sheep". Because, atfer 10+ years they started to realize the authoritarian moves of the government. Orbán won election with a simple campaign, the slogan was: "Stop Brussels!" It is not a surprise to see, that the EU had enough from his bullsh1t rhetoric.
All in all, if Hungary continues this way it will become the new Belarus/Russia. We are very close to that.

@@TheBlackIdentety Yeah, but unless the EU reforms somehow, Poland will always block it. I worry this whole thing with Hungary and Poland will make Ukraine joining the EU that much harder. Which is a shame because if anyone's deserves EU membership its Ukraine. But the founding members might be hesitant to let in a new member when you never know when say 20 years down the road, they find a new leader that becomes a thorn in the side of everyone, just like Orban is.
As a Hungarian I can tell that we are def not doing the right things, but also we had ties with Russia for far too long and giving that up now would make us stand alone. Hungary is such a beautiful county, if only politics wouldn't be a matter to look at.

As a Hungarian I see no light at the end of the tunnel. We're dependent on NATO arms, Russian oil and gas, and now Chinese money as well. Eventually something's got to give and when that happens we will be in a state of disarray. Meanwhile the people eat up the propaganda about us "going our own way". There's no going our own way since 1956, that's the sad truth. We went our own way for a few days and we were crushed and humiliated violently for it.
A change of Union will help (European Union->Soviet U.) First "Peace" must come soon for that (read: Russia have to win.)
When the oil and gas they offer is the cheapest in the entire continent you dont have much of a choice but its good that you made a deal with rosatom for a new NPP, they not only provide the infrastructure but also offer convenient and generous payment plans for the customers.

I have been to Hungary very often. On my last trip last year l was shocked by the high prices of everything. Hungary has never been a rich country but now poverty is everywhere with western european prices that post communist salaries can not match. Homelessness has skykyrocketed. Going to the Czech Republic after some days in Hungary helps understand the situation. Just cross the border and you will be amazed by the gap. One country is moving forward, the other is going backward to the post communist era.
It does not help to achieve a higher standard of living if European countries donate their money to Ukraine. Especially not on credit.
The European Union owes Hungary many billions of euros.
Hungary got dozen of billions euros in the past 12 years, and most of it has been stolen or spend the most corrupted way, sadly....@@Akitlosz

I also read that many industries in western Romania are now hiring Hungarians. Romania is growing very fast anyways, just overtook Portugal and Croatia at GDP purchasing power parity, per person. Couple this with Hungary's descent and you have many Hungarians who are now moving over there.
Many Hungarians also come to Romania now to do their daily shopping, all sorts of facebook groups which see people organise themselves into daily trips to Transylvania to buy goods they simply can't find anymore / can't afford. Unbelievable turnaround from 20 years ago.
Soccording to IMF fo2023 they are still behind Portugal and Croatia but ahead of Slovakia.
It's also easy for Hungarians to go to Romania because of Romania's large ethnically Hungarian population in some areas.

@@JanosFeher but Porsches arent made in Volkswagen factories except the Cayenne, whereas plenty of Audi models are being manufactured in Volkswagen factories. So in theory saying its Volkswagen on an Audi factory is more acceptable than saying the same on a Porsche factory.
It is important to note that the Chinese battery factories being built in Hungary are not an example of foreign investment: they are being very heavily subsidized by the Fidesz government, who are looking at them as a strategic investment. Those factories represent another massive expenditure from the Hungarian government for very little gain. The battery factories are going to be worked in by foreigners, too, as Hungary does not have enough workers to fill them.

It's not the Hungarian government or the Hungarian people, which means they do not receive the profits of the factories; and the workers of the factories aren't Hungarian, which means they do not benefit from the jobs created by the factories. Simply put, the factories do not actually benefit Hungarians in any way, which is my actual problem with them. If any of the above two problems were solved, I would agree with the government in the creation of these factories.
@@martondee1284 you do realise there are a ton of busineses in other countries that do not have workers who are natives, the business isnt owned by the state but is private. The taxes taken from this factory would be enough also who says hungarians wont work there ? And even if it wasnt hungarians its important to look where the money the workers make go, if they spend it in hungary thats still a win.

I would actually have to delve into this matter, but is this true? Because Russia liked to name their battalions based on their geogrpahical locations and their actual ethnic background. So "Ukrainian" battalion would mean they were in Ukraine, and not composed of them.

It isn't. Near 6,000,000 cars produced in late 2017 to half of that in mid 2023. That's a freefall. Not to mention consumers are realising that German cars aren't actually that reliable or luxurious anymore vs the competition, who offer better in both aspects at a lower price point. Ask anyone who actually knows cars.

The chinese market is getting closed for them though because China is pushing it's domestic companies with state money. The original video is in English so I will write in english,. Let's talk about it from a little bit different viewpoint.I am a hungarian, born and grew up here. Then I moved to live in London for 10 years. In the beginning i thought i might settle there forever. Now, I'm back in Hungary, Budapest and I plan to stay forever. I see many similarities between so called advanced nations and Hungary, in fact I felt almost as if i didn't even move back, people speaking all kinds of languages on the streets and everywhere, plenty of young and hard working people in the cities and a somewhat older rural community in what increasingly start to look like ghost towns. Also, rising unaffordable housing prices, not enough high quality, good paying jobs, declining demographics, steady decline in living standards, general apathy and dissatisfaction, growing mental problems, healthcare on the edge of collapse in many cases, fearmongering by politicians, painting foreigners as enemies and pushing the blame onto outside factors for every unpopular decision that is made. Now onto the point. I am no expert but in my opinion this is what happens when economics get out of hand and gets way too much importance and we start to focus on companies and business as if the only path to reach a happy and content life was through making (infinitely) more money. It is true that money won't always make you happy, but if you don't have it for the things you need, it's hell of a pain in the ass. So i guess we are becoming so efficient in focusing on the hyperprofitability of everything that we lost sight of what we, as a people actually need and have no purpose as a collective other then maximising output in euros(or pounds and forints :D). You can bet it worked well in Hungary to change from planned economy(being part of the Eastern Socialist Bloc) to western style market economy starting from 1991 - in the year when i was born - becuase since then we came out of poverty and filled are shelves with many great products and since then Hungary has reached 9th most complex economy in the world. Looking at this then we can obviously see that solely concentrating on economic and political unions are not going to live long because it makes cooperation transactional and rely on interests. This is as much a flaw of the EU with its western ideas, as it was with the old soviet ideas. We should rather focus on finding friendships and partners along cultural lines. On this topic I have one observation that I thing has made me wiser over the years. No matter how hard we try, our transgenerational traumas and history, food and music is what makes up a big part of our identities. Becuase of the jobs i was working in London i was interacting with dozens, or hundreds of people daily. Made friends with many interesting poeple with widely different backgrounds, but one thing stayed constant. the more to the east one came from, the easier it was to became close frends, and the more west the higher the ratio of people who even tho they asked me where I was from and what i was like, the less genuinely disinterested they were. An example that I heard thousands of time now; "heey! where are you from? - Hey! I'm from a small town in Hungary. - Aww! Hungary, goulash!" and the conversation was virtually over there, not because I was not open for more, but because they just didnt give a damn. On the other side the same conversation started went so far with polish, portugese, spanish, indian, sri lankan, cape verden, irish, scotish, south african. Of course there were a few exceptions, and i became really good friends with people born and raised in Edinburgh, Cork, an London but I am the saddest to say that it does not matter that I learned english in school for 12 years before I moved to the UK, and I only kept improving during my time in the UK, was summoned for and served my jury duty, and I went to school there to educate myself further, I was never really accepted or felt particularly welcome there. So in the end, after studying for my citizenship exams, and already acquiring a residence card many years earlier, which was later made invalid after brexit, having to apply again for settled status which i got, I decided i didn't really want to become a British citizen. What am i trying to say with all of this? Well, how many times did i mention any of the other EU countries in this long story of mine? You can count it on one hand, and that is the real reason why Hungary and Orban "helps" Russia, or rather just takes the best deals of the month from a business/political standpoint. There is no real unity in the Union, except for cold hard economic projects...so don't be surprised when there is no unity in ideological questions with such a gaping abyss of common culture, where i bet that 90% of the europeans if asked, couldn't give a unified answer to what it means to be a european citizen.

What are Hungarys legitimate reasons in holding up Swedens NATO accession for so long?
I have had several Hungarian collegues over the years and all were good. Recognized they were either very tall or very short, not inbetween.
Is this because of different heritage of modern day Hungarian people (Magyar-asiatic-short Germanic-Celtic-long)?
As landlord I had a Hungarian family (all Swedish speaking) renting my flat. Very odd for me the husbands brother was also living there too. I have never heard anything like that with a Swedish family. Is this common in Hungary?
My former wife was Ukrainian. I have 4 grown-up children from her living in Sweden so of course I am extra supportive of Ukraine. Both her parents came to me in Sweden to help taking care of the children. This lasted for several years. Recognize bonding between grandparents and grandchildren are good. Today Swedish grandparents only come to visit grandchildren and not much more whichn is a pity. Of course in Ukraine today and 100 years ago in Sweden too it was a multigenerational family that was lost somehow.

First, what i don't understand either is why the hungarian politicians are blocking the NATO accession for Sweden because in my personal opinion there is no reason for that. It can only be a good thing to have more friends and allies. Perhaps somebody in the hungarian parliement was a Julian Assange fan and this is a petty revenge.
Regarding why we are either short or tall, with no inbetween... I think you were just meeting only a small sample. In fact this in itself is a very complicated topic, as you could expect with anything that is over a 1000 years old. We are a very very mixed bunch today, over the history - during many hundreds of years- there were many times the "original people" who came from asia to the carpathian basin and founded the country, accepted or joined with other people. Just a few examples; Besenyők (turkish background), Szászok (Saxons, germanic), Kun and Jász people (regions even hold there names today Kunság and Jászság), Romanians. Then during the long, about 150 years of turkish occupation, surprisingly we recieved not turkish, but Greek, Jewish, and south slavic (serb and bosnyák) people. After that about 80 years of governmental policy of welcoming more people, Swabians and others. AND slovakians. Hungary, later Austro-Hungarian Monarchy was pretty much a big melting pot for a long time. This was the zeitgeist of those years, a lot happened back then in Europe.
That is a very long list as you can see and I'm sure I left out some. This has undoubtdetly helped form the culture and traditions aswell and generally how the people were thinking about things. I guess that's why we have this attitude that we have to have an opinion about everything, and most of the times we can't agree because our ancestors were also involved in a lot regarding politics and they were a mixed bunch. There is a going joke, "We can agree in that we can not agree" :D
Probably this is also why we are so adamant (or more like stubborn) about freedom and sovereignty too and don't really like taking the orders or following the rules when they start to be even just a tiny bit autocratic (guess Orbán inherited that defiance to stand by his belief too, even if it's not the right one).
I can't tell you if it's common practice to live together like that in Hungary in general, but it was certainly a common thing for my family. I have to tell you that we aren't exactly the avarage family. My grandmother had 10 siblings, her parents were 5, his husband had 4 siblings. My mother had 3 siblings, and I am the middle child. We (my grandma and grandpa, all 4 of their children, and me and my older brother) were all living together for a long time in the same building/buildings spending a lot of time together. I also think that it is the best for everybody if all 3 generations spend a lot of time together. I was lucky to experience this and see the world from not just my eyes but from the stories i heard from my grandparents too.
This brings me to your first question. Transgenerational traumas...
Explaining from my personal experience, looking at the whole it is good to have a big family but it can be bad too. If you have a misfortunate thing happen to somebody for example, because it will affect everyone. My grandmother had a sister with disability, and she was looking after her until she passed away. My mothers siblings had accidents and substance abuse, and this put a lot of strain on the family financially and emotionally too, causing the traumas. Where does this come from? We are "always" caught between one side of stupidity or threat and the other (on the schengen border, betwwen east and west, islam and christian). Just listen to or read a translation of the hungarian Hymn, it is the saddest most trauma filled thing ever, and every children has to learn it in school. This had long lasting effect passing from generation to generation. I think now we just want to be left alone and be caucious and sceptical with everything. There is for example a remebrance day (Kitörés Emléktúra) held every february by some people which seems on the surface as harmless, explained with their own words "patriots meeting, not neo nazis" but i am sceptical when i can see the guy wearing a jacket with a german SS logo on it. And the Antifa is also visiting this every year of course, they like to clash. Somehow they forget the deportation of Jews from Hungary to Auschwitz....

To be fair, the economic modell of the whole region has run its course, being an assembly line for German manufacturers can only get you so far. And that far is the middle income trap. This applies to all the former Soviet bloc countries, more or less. Another big problem is, if the engine of the EU, Germany dies, what will be left? Because the German and European economic model was based on cheap Russian energy. Now that seems to be not an option anymore for most European countries where globalist and ideologically posessed politicians are in power, Orbán is clearly pragmatic and wants Russian energy because it's cheaper than American LNG and also because Hungary has no other option really. This angers Brussels of course and Hungary has to pay the prize for its separate policy towards Russia as Brussels is punishing Hungary by withholding EU funds citing corruption issues, but it's obvious that these things are connected, none of these disputes started yesterday, they date back to Hungary's separate migration policy. Fundamentally it is a sovereignist-globalist clash and the same dinamics can be seen now in many other EU countries play out, Sweden, Netherlands, France, even Germany, everywhere sovereignist parties are winning or growing their influence.
Also there is corruption in the EU elsewhere, but it never really gets exposed the way Hungarian corruption seems to be always in a spotlight; maybe because those other countries toe Brussel's line carefully and don't rock the boat as much as Hungary does, not to mention there is petty corruption in Eastern Europe, but the industrial grade corruption that exists in Western Europe is rarely reflecting a bad light on the countries where it happens and is usually quickly swept under the rug (Dieselgate, Libor scandal or Deutsche Bank's various scandals). Has anybody ever heard Germany being called a corrupt country because Volkswagen cheated on emission tests or Deutsche Bank laundering Russian money and evading sanctions? Yeah, neither have I. What you can se everywhere in the EU is the level of Hungarian corruption of the 90s, early 2000s, where the method is that business gives money to politicians to pave the way for some legislations for them. What happens now is a state organized money pump, the control is not on the business side, the control is on the state side which creates its own businesses. Lőrincz Mészáros could not be a middle manager with his own merit, but he is the owner now the biggest company holding in Hungary. ALL money what is now in Mészáros businesses, Tiborcz businesses, 4IG businesses, etc, is a state controlled payment of friends of people in power, and that is just the most visible part. Most of those companies are maintained by the state not only by paying their bills but giving help by making the competitions life harder. These companies would not survive in plain capitalism baseline competition, they NEED the helping hand of the state, typically with constant state subsidies.
The main issue with the state controlled corruption is that when there is a surplus of money, the people in power will take it as it would be a profit in a company. A country is not exactly the same as a company, democracies should not have an owner who is entitled to put profit in his pocket if he wants, that is a feature of dictatorships..
So while corruption in itself is everywhere, the level of that was in the millions of HUF before Fidesz and billions of HUF since that, because the businesses were never could get that much corrupting politicians for legislations. Hungary helps itself. Oil, gas, and nuclear fuel come to them from the Russians, it is not possible otherwise. There are geographical and physical reasons for this. Hungary ensures that the Czechs, Slovaks and others continue to receive vitally important Russian gas. The USA cannot trigger this, nor does it intend to. The USA has bought a huge part of Ukrainian farmland, so it will not give it up. These are the facts.

If this were not the case, LNG gas would have to be transported here by trucks from Antwerp, which would be a horror, just like crude oil. They were here for forty years, they kept us occupied, but even then we were not interesting to the West. - There is no political crisis in Hungary. The support of the ruling parties is stable and the supermajority means that the government can quickly change laws in order to respond to a crisis.
- The only real problem Hungary faces is foreign and not related to government policy. The German economy is going into recession, EU leaders are unable/unwilling to defend the interests of European industry and manufacturing. This affects the mainly European export markets of the Hungarian car industry.
The logic of the rule of law disputes and EU financing is the opposite of what you claim. The liberal elites in Brussels and Western capitals don't like the conservative government of Hungary so they wanted to weaken Orbán's government by withholding EU funds. The rule of law concerns were politically motivated and whenever Hungary amended laws to meet EU demands, the European Commission always invented new concerns.
What they call "rule of law concern" is in fact Hungary closing the Hungarian/Schengen borders to illegal immigrants, banning sexual content and gender ideology from schools and its opposition to sending weapons to Ukraine. And if you check referenda results and polling data you will find that Hungarians overwhelmingly support these policies.

These are the things that make most Hungarians not have to think too much about who blew up the Nord Stream pipeline.

It is not only Hungary that is facing one or more crises. It is a global situation, caused by the coronavirus pandemic, with so many bans, by the war in Ukraine, by the price crisis on the energy market, etc. Romania is not doing better either. In general, the economies of Eastern Europe are fragile and rely on foreign capital and investments provided by the European Union. If the Community market falls, the exports of these countries also fall. Unlike Hungary, Romania has diversified its production of goods and services more, but corruption and inefficiency of government policies are serious obstacles to development. Let's not forget that even in developed countries, capitalism was built over decades. Fortunately, there is also hope for the countries of Eastern Europe, because their economies still have the opportunity to grow, they have a relatively well-trained workforce, and people's mindsets are more flexible and open to new things.

Good summary! Hungarian farmer here. As you showed on the graph after the comunism the economy was horrible. It was only prosperous when he came on power with his way. Many people saw the flaws of the system but there were progress never like before only depression and stagnation. The whole home industry was sold to foreigners after the comunism within a few years. We became an only import market for decades. The main reason for this Tug of War i think is that the "government" wants the economy driving companies "back" and the western based companies dont want to loose their well paying markets (why would they? So the government tries to rule them out with their tools) These reclaims were funded from the EU funds partly thats why they stopped it so we fell partly back in the post-comunism era where there are expenditures and anxiety.
Sad to see this we should work togeather on the bigger problem of the Europe's free falling global influence and declyning population.

I'm a Hungarian economist living in Hungary, so let me add some things, because this video is mostly right, but very superficial. As for the 'cronies', orban follows the russian model, there are no 'businessmen close to orban' - the 'businessmen' are LITERALLY 'employed' by orban in a shadow employment way, they are not 'businessmen' by any means, only sock puppets, p.e. the two of them you can see in the video, one was lajos simicska, kicked out in 2015, all his money taken, the other is lorinc meszaros, who is (and I'm not kidding!!!) by now the wealthiest person in Hungary, a plumber by profession, who really seems to be illiterate as I say, that man can hardly articulate a proper sentence out of his mouth, so dumb everybody laughs at him all the time, would be surprising if he was able to even sign his name on a contract or anything like that. The son in law of orban, istvan tiborcz is not mentioned in the video, a 30-some guy, now one of the richest in Hungary, and one of the most obvious sock puppets...
The automotive sector is the biggest of the manufacturing mainly composed of German companies, that's true, but that's not the whole thing. There are dozens of factories in Hungary owned by German/American/Canadian companies, altogether they make up about 80% of Hungary's exports!!!, of course with a high import proportion as we mainly do the assembly part of the job, nothing more. A small part of the Hungarian economy that is not agriculture but can export its goods being competitve on the international market is composed of mainly tourism, the pharma and the IT sector, maybe 15% of exports, tourism is the main factor here and the rest 5% is compiled by agricultural products, wine etc. As you see, nothing like 'Hungarian economy' actually exists, the 4,5 million workforce can be roughly divided this way: 0,5 million works abroad in the EU and UK; 1,5 million people work for the state or companies closely affiliated with the state (public transport is organized through 'companies', but of course the workers there are basicly public sector employees); 0,5 million people work for the German/American/Canadian owned manufacturing companies who create the 'exports' mentioned above; 1,5 million people work in the domestic service industry and tourism, like retail trade, banks, phone/internet companies, media, catering, all kinds of workmen (mechanicians, plumbers, bricklayers, hairdressers ), lawyers, accountants etc. - this part is very unproductive and uncompetitive, in this sector also the activities that can be centralized are mostly owned by foreign companies like retail (Lidl, Aldi, Tesco), banks (Erste, KBC, Raiffeisen etc.) and about 0,5 million work in the agriculture and food processing, wine making etc., their products are mainly consumed on the domestic market, some exported. The 'cronies' (sock puppets) of orban are not involved in any competitive business except tourism, owning hotels, bars and restaurants and agriculture, but they mainly did their dirty job in the contruction industry as long as there were EU funds - finally stopped in 2021 thank god... And the money they make there is used partly to create such a widespread and very disgusting propaganda that russia can only envy. Hungarian is in an economic crisis, but DO NOT be deluded: the 2,5-3 million voters of orban don't care about the economy at all. These are mainly poor people who are also very uneducated, mainly the 2,5 million pensioners vote for him, because he 'protects the country from the migrants' - and that's enough, these people don't understand economy at all, barely they know the difference between million and billion...

I am coming from a traditionally Fidesz family. My parents are not stupid, they have descent professions and I can call my family a good middle class family. I was raised in the spirit of Fidesz support and I was supporting them. Until I started to learn about the complexities of the world and its very colorful societies and economies, now we have vehement and almost futile fights about the happenings in Hungary.
They are able to think about complex things, they have the capacity of comprehending the impending doom. Yet! They choose to not to think about it. And it is a common problem and it is understandable. Probably it sounds very irrational, but it is related in a weird way to the half a century soviet occupation. I can see on my parents, that they are just happy, that finally they can live well off and they built up the subconcious defense mechanism so that they can protect this utopia. This defense prevents them to think about the reasons why they live well off until it will be too late. This is no unique epidemic and I believe most ex-soviet countries and especially Russia suffers in this. And it is like ADHD, it is extremely difficult to coexist with it, and sometimes even more difficult to change it.
I have no cure for this, but I keep trying to push them into a comfortable conversational environment and hope one day, from that comfort they look out and start to see what I see.

The fidesz is the main symptom, not the problem. Having a system of such a small country like Hungary with only 1 body that is elected directly by the voters will lead to a system like that. If you can elect only 1 body like the Parliament in Hungary, there will be no checks and balances. The first thing to do sometime in the future is to create a system where at least 3 actors are elected directly by the people (lower house, upper house, president) and these will be the checks and balances for each other. We don't know when anything like this will happen, maybe after a civil war like in many countries... We will see...

As a Hungarian I can safely state that both the government and the citizens support the Russians, at least the majority. It's not something they're open to talk about, but something they're ashamed of. They just look at it if there's no other option for us and this is the only way. Also, I don't know about the national spirit, but the youth is definitely not living by the "Leave us the fuck alone" principle. That is just the mentality of the conservative and older people who are tired enough to accept things how they are instead of facing another new wave of change. But the society of Hungary is a tragic sight to look down on, people's minds are still haunted by the communism and they need someone to form an opinion instead of them, truly the tragedy of individual thinking and openness. That's not even remotely true. For example, in The BayerShow, the guests who are open about their allegiance to Fidesz literally declared that anyone with a brain supports Russia. HírTV is financed by the state even if indirectly, everything they say is what the Fidesz actually thinks but can't say because of obvious diplomatic reasons. The government is pro-russia.

We don't have problems with Russia, since their army have left the country, we have a correct relationship. They fulfill every contract. Unlike Ukrain which is the most corrupt country in the world, pushes all the trash into rivers, you don't see the images what is happenning every spring since 2006, rivers are fully covered with trash, and more islands of trash floats than birds. But it is not politically correct to say/write about it in the west. And this is just the smallest thing Ukraine does, before the war they stopped the gas in the gas pipeline, stolen the gas for years, they disregard every contract, their maffia is terrible and they are terrorizing minorities in every way.

Most of the Russian energy goes to the German industrial factories in Hungary. German and Austrian politicians do the mouth karate for their own voters but never imply actual sanctions because Hungary is one of the reason why German factories still have their lights on.
As a hungarian, i see it differently: Hungary does not want to help Russia, it just does not want to shoot itself in the foot. The two economies are (partly due to history...) connected in many ways, disrupting it would make the country even poorer. CNG is a only partly an option, there is no solution replacing the russion oil (none!! if you check the map, Hungary does not have any see) and if you put aside your prejudice, the russian Roszatom is maybe the best in nuclear technology. Also, backing up from Paks2 (the new nuclear reactor built by Roszatom) would also mean burning a hell of a lot money. Assuming backing up is an option; the contracts have been signed in 2016 or so... Now, be clever in this situation without bringing down your industry. And chaning the industry takes time, and this is what i see: doubling the renewable energy sources, installing batteries and considering even more racionalsm
As hungarian I can say, that history taught us that we have to consider not only one regional/global power at a time. This video summarize the EU perspective. Thats all right, it has many important aspect. But the EU is not a sole power of the world, and if a government of a small easten-european country with small resources and population has more perspective, and not only wants to survive the present crisis, then it will exactly do what present hungarian government do. Hungarian government tries to build strong national related group of big firms, industry, the banking sector, what is exaclty the same thing what Japan, Small-Tigers, China did, before they could show great economic performance. Hungary tries to rebuild a strong Eastern-Europe but because of present ukrainian war the alliance of some countries in the region (V4) decayed. So Hungary seraches for new countries to cooperate with. These are Serbia, and Turkey nowdays most of all. If V4 could be strong we also could cut connections with Russia or China as western countries tries the same nowdays, but they also didn't succeeded! So why for the god's sake ask the same a small very dependent country the same?
I'm Turkish and I live in Hungary, beautiful country with values. Not everything is about cheap Doritos and high wages, EU and West fanboys don't understand this. As a Czech until Hungary radically changes its political course and leadership i absolutely refuse to have any form of cooperation in V4 and i believe Poland right now is also not very eager to promote V4 cooperation, especially when a new much more pro-eu and prowestern goverment there is coming. Right now i would absolutely prefered to cooperate with Baltics or Slovenia in V4 instead of Orbans regime, where he plays it on all sides turning out he looses all friends and completely isolated Hungary as some weird island which is hated by the west, but the east dont see it as approachable considering the fact its still Nato, EU, and is surrounded by Nato and EU countries from almost all sides.

Than 2-3 years later when automotive industry in germany started to lose ground and had a shortage of cheap labor workforce - Merkel did invite all the people in syria in a TV statement, which she immediately regretted but there was no help after the hundred thousands started to walk toward germany, many smuggled on the roads by smugglers, killers, robbers.
Hungary being a Schengen border of the European Union, had to manage the situation. First tried to hold back migrants, but as the international press brought outrage from germany and austria, the migrants were immediately let through the country. Austria was not aware of the numbers and quickly shut down borders with hungary - against being both an eu member state. Migrants stuck in hungary, so the leadership started to control the influx again. That was in 2015, when it turned out that Merkel was not thinking about a migration of that size, so anyway, after some years painting Hungarian PM as Hitler due to the fenced green-border hungary built meanwhile, germany, denmark, italy, greece, spain, UK slowly started to realize, the influx had to be stopped.

Germany had also an ca. 80% gas import from russia before the ukrainian conflict. While Germany has its northern gas supply route and northern sea ship ports to get LNG transport, hungary has no options, no ship port, no sea shores, no nearby countries with gas extraction capacity. Therefore hungary tries what germany tries, making new contracts with Katar, and *-istan countries exporting gas.
Hungary is a little country, landlocked by its former territory, now belonging to slavic countries, and austria. Its 9M population, an always imported industry, a somewhat working and quality producing agriculture is what makes it's gdp.
There are a lot of decades-long unsolved problems in the country, health care, education, service quality - which cannot be solved at that part of the continent, surrounded by slavs, ukrains and the Balkan peninsula which is waiting now for more than decade to join EU.
UK left the EU for good, though it was a large cut back - the self-sustainability, the independence of judicial and law system, independance politically and economically makes the country a sovereign, proud nation. So whatever happens, such small country cannot choose side and compromise itself toward any of the fighting states - as both responsible for supplying the necessary gas, otherwise hungary's collapse and humanitarian crisis would be imminent. In such a delicate situation, when your life depends on gas and there no other sources, just like many times in history, hungary becomes the victim of wars. This time tries to be independant like the swiss were throughout the world wars. Maybe this time being independent wont toss the little country on the losers' so the punished side - again.

Hungary wants a working and peaceful europe, otherwise it cannot evolve on the long term. Interesting how this statement is interpreted by some as a pro-russia statement. Russia being the agressor, ukrain being the vengeance fighter, hungary being the peace-seeker, seems only a politic-wise aspect to put hungary to any of the fighting nations' side.

My, what a loaded question the title is - first, it is not "love" but normal trading for mutual benefits (incidentally, what is the volume of this trade compared to, say Belgium and Russia, or Germany and Russia? Hungary should remember what it is to be a vassal and a puppet state such as during the cold war. With relations to Russia or the PRC everything has a catch.
I have to double down on that. I am also a Hungarian. I was skeptical about the video, whether it can give a good light on the happenings. I have to say it gave me a wholesome of news. But knowing the events in Hungary it makes sense. Perhaps facts are overly simplified here and there, but this video isn't about the fine details.
Also thank you for clarifying the fact, that Hungary is a Russian trojan horse. They can cause serious damage to the integrity of Europe. But I think they are more likely driven by the facts you mentioned to save the economy from their mistakes, with that saving their power, than simply allying with the aggressor for its sake. Nevertheless I disagree with their policies.

You forgot that in Hungary, every possible job has a 20-65% lower payment than EU/Schengen standards, and even tho they are raising the paymets, they also raise inflation and taxes, making the Forint even worse than before, alongside with 370 forint is being 1 dollar/euro. If you do the math, than for example, a nurse in Hungary gets around 900k - 1.5m of a payment monthly (depending on the level), that converts to around 1000-3000 euros. Now in Germany, I don't have to say, it's at least 5-6k euro...

There is no corruption and lack of rule of law in Hungary, this is why foreign investers (not just from China, but factually on the last 3 years their was the bigger investors). In 2018 BMW and french Airbus arrived, in 2021 Rheinmetal and Bosch building their main factories into Hungary. The EU subsidies are insignificant to our economies, only 1% of the whole, we can be without that. But of course we will not be, because that simply bandit-stole from the EU, we will not left that for them, to give to Ukraine.
We will leave the sinking EU boat ASAP, if we was able to prepare that well (around 2030 we will do it)... Than, you can F urself!

Hungary is a landlocked country, so it does not have the luxury to trade on the global market, making it much more dependent on russian resources then a country which has acces to the seas. And if you look at it, this is not a standalone problem. Beside Hungary, Serbia, Slovakia, and Austria all landlocked too and are less hostile (or even friendly) to Russia.
And on a different approch, Hungary is not pro-Russia. Most of the hungarians don't really like Russia, they just don't hate them. Hungary simply not pro-Ukraine, mostly because Ukraine was a huge rival to Hungary before the war. They are activly harmed the hungarian minority in Ukraine, sabotaged the economy, and made hostile statement toward Hungary, and they were an active part of the soviet army during Hungarian revolution in 1956. Ukraine is not an EU nor a NATO member, Hungary has no reason to support it.

Hungary is accused of many 'crimes' that also happen with other governments, including those in the EU. The difference is that those other players are able to hide their irregularities much more skillfully, hence avoid being revealed. That is the main issue here.
The root of the problem is that the political left and center within the EU oppose countries that are politically on the right. Both the right-wing governments of Hungary and Poland receive criticism from other member states and the EU, while the corresponding left-wing countries are allowed to do the same without the slightest reaction. For example, the corrupt social democratic government in Romania. The socialist government in Slovakia which now openly supports Russia. Or the Spanish socialist government, which purges everything bourgeois from the state and bans right-wing symbols. In this way, Hungary is forced into the arms of crap states like Russia and China. Europe has long criticized the USA and not least Trump, but now that they are leaving Europe to defend itself, the entire EU is standing with its pants down. We get the Europe we deserve and we have prepared ourselves well to be violently driven by both Islamism, Soviet Russia and Communist China.

If you turn on the radio sitting in your car, you hear 50 minutes music, and 10 mintes of propaganda, 0 minutes of news every hour. The same on the TV, newspapers, and Internet. There are almost no independent news sources. They have to power to tell people what they should think. And enough people will obey, as they simply don't know the facts based on they could take the right decision. Ok I know the russia is much more powerful country than hungary in terms of economy but they were able to transfer from making european to chinese cars in no time, from buying european to chinese cars.
