A Tale of Nubbin- A fish that DIED and came back to life. WATCH BEFORE BUYING A FISH!

  • Do not let Nubbin's death go in vain. Learn from the awful experiences of this fish and be sure to NOT make the same mistakes I did. The moral of this story is to do PLENTY of research before buying a living animal, or they will suffer. You must think carefully and research every aspect of caring for an animal or something as simple as turning off a filter can kill them. I have written a few articles on my website lukesgoldies.com that may be helpful, but a LOT more research is required.

Unfortunately, Nubbin had a harsh life because I made many foolish mistakes and did not do enough research. PLEASE do a minimum of 5 hours of research before buying a fish, or they will suffer like Nubbin. I have some articles on my website and more to come, but be sure to do plenty of more research. lukesgoldies.com

Thank you for advocating for proper research being done for caring for another living creature before you decide to adopt it, especially because fish are some of the most commonly mistreated pets, not typically on purpose of course, but because of a lack of research and knowledge about fish keeping.

Is it your guilt that also led you to caring for so many goldfish? Because that's how I feel. I feel so guilty about the animals I mistreated because of my inexperience, and because of that guilt I stayed away from owning animals other than my cat. Presumably due to this guilt, I had recurring nightmares about being back in my old home and having all of these animals that were dying all around me, animals I'd never even owned before, far numerous in quantity. I've only stopped having those nightmares because I got my betta. Learning how to care for him and bonding with him in a way, I felt more in control of my actions, and it helped absolve me of a lot of my guilt. I take care of my pets better than myself probably, and I love my lil betta. He's going to be moved from a 5 to a 10 gallon tank soon once I complete the cycling (:

I killed a fish the same way when I started. Except I took the intake off the filter to clean it and forgot to turn the filter off. A tiny Ryukin I had got sucked up sideways into it and her gills got clamped shut and she was unable to breath. By the time I found her, she was alive but barely. I tried the airstone revival method too but it was too late. She died on her own a while later. We all make mistakes. I also sucked a fish into a pond pump during winter the same way when I was new at outdoor keeping. He survived and is now 5 years old and doing well. We all make rookie mistakes. The key is to learn from them.

This reminds me of something I did when I was younger (though not as extreme)
we had a big school of silver dollar fish in a big tank, I was around 9. One day my mum walked into the room and found the tank broken, we have no idea to this day what broke it, water was leaking from a corner and around 50 dead and dying silver dollars sat at the bottom. We got a few into a tank and they seemed alright, but one we found wasn't looking too hot, so my mum spent 20 minutes with an airstone under its gills trying to get it to move. She gave up, but I didn't want to give up. So I held this silver dollar (around the size of a small plate) and this air stone for 3 hours until it was free swimming in the tub we had it in. That silver dollar lived for another 4 years, when it passed from temperature fluctuations

This is very touching and relatable. When I was in high school, they started selling baby betta fish at some pet stores nearby, and I felt super bad for them beung stuck in those tiny cups. So, being a naive teenager with a bleeding heart, I got a few and set them up in different tanks. Then I was lulled into a false sense of confidence by how "easy" they were to care for, and I got several more adult and babies. I won't go through each one's story, but eventually it got to the point that I couldn't keep up with all the maintenance and became lax. Needless to say, none of them are around today.
After I graduated from high school, I went to vet tech school. They don't teach you a whole lot about fish unless you specialize in aquarium vet science, but I learned more about generic animal care requirements and about uneducated impulse purchases of "exotic" or "easy" pets. The overwhelming majority of disease and death of "exotic"(animals that aren't cat, dog, or livestock) pets is caused by inappropriate enclosures or husbandry. As someone who's exposed to cases like that so often, it's almost cathartic to hear someone tell others to be careful and do their research before adopting or buying an animal. Especially someone who loves their pets so much. Everyone loves their pets, but love alone isn't going to keep those pets from suffering from neglect. Education is just as important.
By the way, the betta fish story ends two years later with my sister winning a common goldfish from a VERY shady school event, and even though I refused to get involved because he probably shouldn't have survived 2 days, Timothy refused to die and I used the guilt and lessons from the betta experiences as a catalyst to drive me to research like crazy and help spoil my little scaly nephew. Which, actually, led me to find your CZcams account.

I remember once when i was 7 i got my first goldfish fish in a 10 gallon and I "cycled" my tank because i didn't add the benificial bacteria or water conditioner so 2 hours went by and i found him lying on the gravel my dad said it was "sleeping" and the next moring it was floating at the top then I get a fantail it went a little better and another problem was i never did water changes and the only time it was done it was an 100% water change and scrubed down the glass and the next day the fish died because of amonia spike because the benifical bacteria died from the tap water and the chemicals from the soap and the same things happen and now i learned from my mistakes and know am getting a better filter aeration, quality food no colored gravel just white sand and some REAL plants soon getting 2 ranchus and a thai oranda or calico ryukin in a 50 gallon i hope it goes as planed.

I feel your pain 💗💗 i had researched a whole ton before getting my birds but no one told me youre supposed to leave seeds out constantly. All the guides and forums said 1-2 tablespoons
Tldr my birbs were nearly starved to death and got health complications because of this weaking them, even the vets and breeder didnt say "youre doing it wrong/this is whats recommended" so because im autistic (diagnosed) i didnt pick up on the subtle correction they did and their subtle word choice
Then i finally met a vet who said "youre starving them" and i came across a breeder forum instead of an owner forum and finally i got good advice (tldr pellets bad, i knew this when it came to other animals so i felt horrible that i didnt apply it to my birds 😞)
So yeah the main message of all this being
Check who youre getting your research from, how long a method has existed, why, what are the scientific consequences etc etc and for the love of all that is good, pellets can never replace proper food and ingredients

Question: I had an albino bubble eye that developed this string of what looked like white pearls coming out of its eye and it would drop the little pearls from its eye and then finally it died. Is that infection?

I've made that mistake before, a couple of times and one time the fish was inside out and I cried
Another time one of the ends fell off and ate a fin, it got infected and we couldn't get methylene blue in time and he passed too. I refuse to let this happen again and I'm going to take preventative measures now (eg quarantine tank, salt, medication, and most importantly Methylene blue)

You need to find a musical friend and make this into a sea shanty. 🐟🎵🎶
