I have a 4runner and the gti was also a car I was cross shopping. I rented a couple on turo and hated the manual.

I'm also an owner of a 2016 Toyota 4Runner (Trail Edition), the engine and transmission is adequate. I've put over 194K miles on mine and never felt I was missing out. Anyone expecting better MPG, engine, transmission, etc should just look to the "progression" of the Tacoma. There will obviously be improvements but the mind-blowing changes that people who complain about the 5th Gen 4Runner would want aren't going to be there.
