Great evaluation. You look incredible đ sound incredible!! Man I think I'm in love đ
Are there stencil inks in pen form? I'm asking because I have a Brother Scan 'N Cut SDX125e. A nice digital cutter that also has tool attachments for among other things...pens. With the universal pen holder (2 sizes...one for small barrel, the other for large barrel pens) and stencil ink pens you'd have the ability to draw a stencil up to 12x24 inches if using a low tack 12x24 inch DX compatible mat. Then switch to the standard autoblade to precisely cut out that stencil. Any left over stencil transfer paper or regular paper can then be saved and reused for other projects. With the integrated 600 DPI color scanner you can scan any hand drawn or printed image/text up to the full width of the mat in less than a minute or two.
So the next time you're working on a stencil project just pull out the saved paper stock, load it onto a mat, create or retrieve your tattoo files, then scan the paper to know precisely where you can place it on that paper. Even scale, rotate, duplicate it as your heart desires before sending it to the draw mode. Most of the same editing features found in the PC and online free editing software can be done on the cutter itself with its 5 inch color touch screen. There is some internal storage but it fills up quickly. But it has a USB 2.0 port on the side for storing files to any capacity USB Flash Drive. You can store files on your PC and send it to the cutter via USB cable, wi-fi, or plug in a USB Flash drive.
But be mindful which machine you get. Mine for example won't scan the larger 12x24 inch mats. But the units costing closer to a grand do. Mine was $400 and thanks to some tax refunds from Presidents Trump and Biden was affordable :)
There are stencil pens, they are called surgical pens.
Tks for the video! I had the exatcly same issue this week-end. My 2720 stopped to print suddenly, after 2 weeks without using it, it printed 3 stencils perfectly and stopped for the fourth.
I'll try the monochromatic now
Im considering 1170, hows your experience with mono?
@@ripper9112 Hi, I have the 1170 since 4 months now and it works really fine. To prevent any clogging I print at least one stencil each wednesday even when I'm travelling etc I send an e-mail to the printer.
The alone downside on this product imo compared to 2720 is that you haven't any tool on the printer to change contrast or brightness etc... You need to have a perfect file to send to the printer with the good balance between black and grey. But if you print just outlines for your stencils it doesnt matter. Just take care if you send the print from another room, to not pass in front of the source or front of the printer, sometimes the printer print 50% of the file because you move near it lol
@@roncecoeur4531 Ok Thanks for the info, every wenesday you mean once a week is enough, i guess 3 times a week is minimum and best everyday.
@@ripper9112 Yes I mean if you want to be sure that the printer isnt clogging, you have to print once a week minimum to prevent it. When you take a break etc. But yes in the long run I think using it each day is the best for the printer, but it also cost a lot of stencil ink and paper if you just print random stencils each day even in holidays to keep the printer fine.
Well don't be afraid of the result, stencils are good on this printer for me, it takes gradients etc very well, just make sure that your outlines are significantly more darker than your shades for the stencil version of your sketches
Tysm for this đ€ got this monochrome printer 10/10
Glad you like it!
Thank you!
Very nice comparison đđŒIâve yet to try the Epson printer, but honestly Iâve been using the thermal copier machine I bought from eBay about 2 years ago and honestly works well enough for me. P.S, I mainly do geometric mandala work, so I guess it does its job haha.
Thank you! Yeah, if you don't need fine details in your stencils then the thermal printer works just fine.
Nice comparison!!Drying out are finding less issues with the monochrome? My epson multi color tank printer always had issues clogging and was about to give up but thinking of monochrome?
Thank you for your helpful video! I have a question to ask, cause I'm planning to buy the printer myself. After printing the stencil will I still be able to use it after 2~3 days? Does it dry out fast? Thank you!
I am not sure actually, I have not tried that out. I will do a test and get back to you.
@@FloatyTattoo thank you so much! I was wondering how long the printed paper ink would last, will it have any problem if i would be mailing the printed stencil paper somewhere. Thank you for your effort!! Viewer from south korea â
Great video thanks. Do you have to print script backwards on the m11170?
Yes you do.
You're basically using mirror mode like you would for a T-shirt transfer or waterslide decal. Unless your customers desire the requirement of having a mirror to be able to read their tatted text :)
hi , may i ask what do you do with the left over inks of the inkjet stencil inks? since the tank of the M1170 has not enough space for all the inks đ
Just store it in the bottle until there is enough space to fill the tank.
Would like to see side by side wipe test of the stencils though also using something like a brother pocketjet printer would be a more fair comparison. Since the inkjet is a high end system vs the china special printer. The pocket jet printers can also print shading etc what I've found is the inkjet is great for detail but it does not last nearly as long on the skin. For a portrait I will always use normal spirit paper I'm on my 3rd inkjet printer Already but the brother pocket jet still going strong
I actually noticed the opposite with these, the inkjet stays on for a very long time, like days if you donât scrub it, and does not smudge. I had the spirit paper ink smudge on me early into a tattoo. As you said though I havenât tried the higher end thermal printers. From a quick look those are about twice the price of my epson system if not more, the brother pocket looks about the same price though. I might have to check that out in the future. Thanks for the info.
@@FloatyTattoo interesting I noticed you are using the eco stencil ink not from the brand inkjet , that's what I have. Inkjet stencil ink. maybe that is the difference. What product do you use for transfer, stencil stuff,?
@@x_z0mb1_x yep, good ol Stencil Stuff, Iâve used a few other but like it best. The Eco Stencils Ink works great and if half the price of InkJet. Might be what makes the difference on how the stencil lasts. Also I do a double layer of stencil stuff and let the stencil set for at least 20 mins before I start tattooing. Another factor I noticed in keeping the stencil longer was switching from A&D to Hustle Butter, wipes way less of the stencil ink, I did a comparison video if you want to check that out.
@@FloatyTattoo I started awhile ago usen stencil stuff tried them all and I liked it the best until I found proton...and OMG proton changed my stencils dramatically!kinda like u said above.like if you don't scrub it then it's just not coming off.not at all.i absolutely love it and now that's all I use.jist sayin if ya wanna give it a try?it's definitely worth it and it's not much more then good ol stencil stuff
@@vapestar3705 thanks for the recommendation, itâs actually very good timing as I was just about to order some more Stencil Stuff, will give proton a try.
One of the most informative videos on the best DIY stencils and printers!! Hey FNG- WATCH THIS ONE. You will learn everything you need to know.
how is the new printer holding up, is the once a week print working to help keep the lines clean? trying to choose between these two versions of printer. would you say the monochome is the better option. thank you!
Yes the monochrome is holding up great as long as I do at least 3 prints per week. It is the best way to go especially since you can print right from your iPad and resize/flip the image easily.
@@FloatyTattoo You shouldn't have to print a whole lot to keep the line(s) from clogging. Epson printers have a built-in test page you can use that will do the trick.
Went through 4 printers now. Keep them clean print every day or so. The heads clogged so easy. I was so excited. But alas we are over it at our shop
It is risky, hopefully I keep this one going a while, I just like how much detail I can get out of them so much.
I'm a little confused as you say in your video that you use the ET2720 but the printer you have linked in the description is a completely different model. Do they print the same? And have you used the one that you linked for tattoo stencils?
I used to have the ET2720, but it broke so I upgraded to the M1170, it is a mono tank instead of multi tank so you don't waste any stencil ink. All of the prints from the Epson in this video are from the M1170 which is the one I have linked in the description. Hopefully that clears things up.
What are the settings you recommend, when i run it my stencil is really light.
Try setting to glossy or ultra glossy if it is too light. I use high quality plain paper and it works well but sometimes if you are doing multiple prints in a row it can get light so then change to glossy.
how many stencils would you say you can yield from a full ink tank? Do you find it cost effective?
I would say you could get 2000-3000 stencils from a single tank. I saw on Jono Smith's channel he got 2-3 years of use out of single tank printing at least 1 stencil a day 5 days a week and just filled up his printer again after all that time and it still works great. I would say it is very cost effective as long as you do 3 prints a week to keep the print heads clean.
i just threw away my epson eco jet 2720 printer same issues you had the printer head clogged up i tried cleaning it the same way you did and no luck.i watched your video and got the thermal printer you recommended and the thermal printer prints "darker stencils" which is a lot better to me than the ink thats in the ink-jet printer. "the ink jet printer is very costly". i'm happier with the thermal printer. the epson is a good printer "when it worked" but i don"t use my printer every day so the thermal printer was a better choice for me.i think that the ink on the spirit thermal paper is better than the eco stencil ink. very good video by the way so people if your not using your printer at least once a week don"t get the ink jet printer.it makes great prints but very costly if it breaks down on you the thermal printer has a lot less risk involved
Yeah, the epson can be risky if you are not using it regularly and the thermal printer should work just fine for most tattoos.
Dear a question Iâm wondering .. whatâs going on if I donât print every day ? Thanks you for the info
Not printing every day is alright, make sure to do at least 3 prints per week and it should be all good.
Any stencil printer recommendations for detailed, fine line and realism tattoo? đącuz I saw ppl talking that the stencil doesnât hold with this printer
Yes, the new yilong ats886 thermal printer, I have a recent review comparing thermal printers which you can see what it is capable of
@@FloatyTattoo thank you for the fast reply! đ defo gonna check that out now!
Now I'm wondering if there is an automatic or automated tattoo bot that you can mount to a person's body and have it do all the super fine detail work? How much detail can the human skin hold from a tattoo?
There is one but the tech has a long way to go before it will replace humans: czcams.com/video/Xuy-KUYze8A/video.html
dear for the ink should I just use the epson brand only or I can use other brand like stencil printer ink?
You need to use special stencil printer ink, Eco Stencils is what I recommend, there is a link in the description.
Have you tried printing a greyscale image rather than a lined one?
Also, the printer you linked looks different than the one you have there
I have tried greyscale and it works great with the epson. There are a few options for the same printer on that link, the one I have is the print only version, no scanner. For some reason amazon wonât let me link directly to that version.
If i have epson eco tank M1120, also with black tank only, will it work the same good?
If there is already black ink in the tank it will not work, it must be a fresh clean empty tank.
I had the EPSON printer and honestly I didnât find it useful when I would print a stencil (a detailed stencil like portrait ext.) it would be very light and it wouldnât not transfer well on the skin duhh but yea I spent about 1,000 on every printer and ink and the ink is not cheap at all that was my experience I even tried editing the pictures so it would be more dark but it just never worked sadly I was very excited because it was gona help me out a lot since sometimes the client wants the stencil smaller or bigger and it just would of saved so much time and help you from burning your self out from drawing so much hope this helps someone
Sorry to hear it didnât work out for you, they can be pretty finicky.
I got the same problem đą
I Got same problem, two epson printer broken after half a year
may be too late to help you but for anybody else reading this. i saw somewhere that if you have a regular Eco-tank (4 colors ) then you have to fill all the tubes in the printer and do the regular calibration like you would if regular printer ink was to be used. apparently that has helped other people, may or may not fix your issue but is worth a try.
Does a stencil from the Eco Tank smudge less than a thermal stencil?
Yes, it smudges less, stays sharp longer.
What brand of stencil ink are you using in the epson printer
Electrum Eco-Stencils
Can you use epson workforce printers for tattoo stencils?
Iâm not sure, do they have refillable tanks?
2 years later do you still rather these stencils over thermal? I have been considering buying one but haven't pulled the trigger on it. Also probably a stupid question but i noticed people only use few different tank style printers mainly being inkjet or something like that đ my question is can i buy any tank style printer to use? I couldn't find the one you had mentioned in thia video but came across a epson etm1120 its probably just a newer version of the 1170 I couldn't tell you haha. Thanks in advance!
After 2 years I have had 2 of the tank printers break on me which is quite a bit of money to spend on them and the ink. Because of that I have now switched to thermal printers exclusively, especially since they can now compete on resolution with the ATS886 I just see the tank style as too much of a hassle/risk.
Is it possible to use normal primary printer ink for stencil ?
No it is not, you need to use special ink with a brand new printer. I used electrum eco stencils ink.
Hi there. Have you heard of the CNC thermal printer around 245$ bluetooth operated. Will appreciate your feedback as i am into buying a thermal due to high price level of the stencil ink here in turkey. Thank you will appreciate your reply. Tks. đč
Hi there, I have heard of it but not tested it myself, it looks decent, I will reach out to them to see if I can get one for testing.
@@FloatyTattoo highly appreciated tks have a lovely time.
I am debating getting a thermal printer or an inkjet printer. If I print a stencil and send it to someone who wants to see what it looks like on their body (someone trying to choose one tattoo over another) before the actual tattoo is done, will the stencil be ok? What I am asking you is:
1) Does a stencil need to be used right away after its printed or can it be applied a week or two after it has been printed?
2) Will the stencil be dry enough to not smudge in the envelope when mailing it?
I would like to know the answer to these questions for both the thermal and inkjet stencils as it may determine which one I get. Thank you.
I would not want to do this for safety reason alone and would not support using old stencils that could be exposed to who knows what in transit and handling. Please use only freshly printed stencils on your clients and store the paper in a clean enclosed area.
@@FloatyTattoo he just wants the client to see how the tat would look on their own body ladyđ€Šđœââïžđ dont get it twisted
Wish i could help u my boi but lmk if u figured it out
From my experience, as lon as your using the stencil as a temporary tattoo only (just getting a feel for how itâll look) you should be fine to use the stencil after a couple days of it sitting there. I would not use tattoo over that stencil though as itâs only meant to be a temporary tatt of sorts
Print a new stencil once youâre ready to do the real deal đđœ
Thank you so much youâre really legend â€đ
No problem đ
What do you think about the Epson M1120? I saw great results too
It does have good print results, but the paper is not the best, the ink wipes away relatively fast compared to thermal ink, and the printer will break if you don't keep consistently printing off it every day.
Need help with this, i bought it couse i saw photoshop photocopy filter used by people to make stencils in matter of secconds, but all i get is blurry faded stencil on skin, looks fine when printed, im using it for fake skin with speed stick, is this shouldn be used with it?
Tried like 15 differend combos with amound of speed stick and darkness of the print, didnt achieve usable stencil yet.
It's tricky for sure to get a stencil on fake skin, I recently just found a good way, make sure you clean it well with dish soap first, let all the water rinse off, blot dry but not all the way, let the skin stay just a little moist, then use LOTS of speed stick, like get a thick layer of it on there, rub it on for a good minute or two, then press the stencil firmly on and let it set over night.
@@FloatyTattoo Thats actually how i do it besides leaving skin moist before speed stick(it doesnt seem that important of all the steps), i just gave up Photoshop filter stencilling and i draw digitally by myself, when theres just lines its no problem, its stil better than stenciling on paper but i wouldnt be investing in printer, ink and InkJet Paper if i knew im still gonna have to do it by hand.
You the best BTW always responding and always trying to help, Thank you.
I got one more question, are you familiar maybe with concept of using pressure coocker for sterilizing grips, i saw you have a vid about autoclave but now i got confirmation from few sources that it works the same but 15 times cheaper.
Im planning on using it when i will start tattooing myself and friends.
What is the papper did you used? Or how can i found it?
I mean for the printer i know the thermal machin used the stencil paper
Itâs called InkJet Stencil paper, there is a link in the description.
What ink do you use ??
Electrum Eco-Stencils Ink
I bought the same printer and same ink, it worked for a week and now I only get blank pages out of it.
The line in the Eco Tank printers clogs if you don't run them often enough, usually at least once every other day. I have a video on how to clean the print head so that it will print again if it did not dry out too much: czcams.com/video/YxXrVrVNJ2I/video.html
Unfortunately I had two of these printers break on me due to not printing enough and have since mostly switched to thermals. I did recently get a Canon Mega tank to review from Tat2Skin and it at least has a replaceable print head, I am still seeing whether I like it better than my best thermal printer now.
Hopefully the cleanout procedure I linked fixes your printer.
Can I not use the printer to sublimate and for stencils?
No you cannot use it for both. The stencil ink cannot be mixed/traded with other inks.
Great video
Thank you!đ
Hey I got mine but it's not printing as dark as yours. Got any tips?
Set the paper type to photo, start with matte, If not dark enough then glossy and ultra glossy, each one will deposit more ink in the print.
Also Iâve found you should put the tracing paper into the manual loading port with a sheet of plain paper behind it
Hey floaty, im considering M1170 couse its on sale now in my country, how thigs are going after a year?
Im still learning on fake skin, but if its gonna hold up for long time i might invest.
Iv read somwhere that HP Ink Tank is less problematic than normal EcoTanks, but i didnt hear many complains on Mono EcoTanks.
It works great if you keep printing on it at least a couple of prints every 2 days. If you are not using it that much I would recommend the amazon printer.
@@FloatyTattoo They say on mono you can print 3000 stencils so even if i dont need that many stencils i can print one every day and im good for 9 years, since its on sale its same price as stencil printer on amazon.

Eco Stencils Printer Setup

The epson stencil printer is definitely revolutionary when it comes to making tattoo stencils! Based on my own research and countless reviews from other tattoo artists, those who have the most trouble have color eco tank printer set ups. You need to get your hands on a epson monochrome printer! I had to order one from Europe. They unfortunately do not sell them in Canada. It's worked out great for me so far! I did take a break for 4 months due to my health and the print heads dried out but they're easy to unclog. Just make sure you use it at least once every week or 2 weeks.
They're great for super detailed stencils. But the downside is that it's hard to read once it's on the skin. You think it's going to be great to have all that realism packed into one stencil but it makes things confusing! For me personally I prefer to have very miminal outlines and proportions, I fill in the rest by looking at my references.
If you're flat out I highly recommend you have a back up stencil machine. You can never go wrong with a paneka a3 or a4 very fast and reliable German built! Expensive but worth it.
I'm excited to see how far the eco tank printers come in the next 10 years. I'm sure a tattoo stencil printer far better than these are in the works.
Very insightful, thank you!
Whos ink in tanks? Are you getting clogging issues with monochrome printer or much better then your older color tank one?
Electrum Eco Stencils Ink, I didn't notice much of a difference between the monochrome or the color tank for clogging issues, they both ended up clogging and dying after 8-12 months. I only use thermal printers now.
Thanks, I thought maybe the monochrome being just 1 tank would clog less but I agree they are not great and as readable as the thermo ones.
My printer also broke down today. Can I re use the ink from the broken printer??? To my new one, then buy new ink???
Yes, you should be able to use an ink syringe to pull the ink out through the line. My only concern is if the ink has dried up too much it may break your new printer.
When I move the printer I see it does move like water! Also I was thinking to do a head clean, but after watching all the videos, I wonât waste my time doing that!
Which printer is better? The M1120 or M1170? And how long is your printer lasting? Is it giving you any lines on your prints ??? Have you had to do a power clean in this 1 year???
I don't know about the 1120, I've only used the 1170. It has lasted for the year, I have had to do a couple of power cleanings when I didn't print on it for a few days.
I just bought this printer after watching this video and I bought the same ink but Iâm here trying to apply stencils with stencil stuff as the Applicant but the stencils are barely and I mean BARLEY sticking to skin showing up super faded. Why am I having this issue? Whatâs going on? đ
Iâm sorry to hear that, the first thing I would try would be to set the printer to glossy or ultra glossy and it should put more ink on the page. I would also try a double layer of stencil stuff. Apply a small amount, let it tack up and then do a second layer and let just start to get tacky before applying the stencil.

Nice vid. I've been using an epson eco tank for a year and half and was great, however I had the need to buy an cheap thermal printer because I was constantly loosing the stencil and with the thermal printed stencil it sticks like crazy! This is something the people must know, in big tattoos the eco tank printings are way more weak than the thermal ones.
Thank you, and I know what you mean, I did find using the electrum green gold helped to make the eco stencils last longer as well as using hustle butter instead of any other ointment, but yeah the classic spirit paper and thermal printer works great for when you really need the stencil to hold.

Yes, but the printer canât be used for regular printing. It has to just be used as a stencil printer, canât have had regular in ink in it either.
loved my ecotank. perfect stencils, they would dry extremely fast and last up to 10 hours of constant vaseline and wiping. then the inevitable happened and the heads became clogged with ink and the estimated fix would be $300 and thatâs not a guaranteed fix. my solution was to scrap the ecotank all together and just go thermal. you canât clog a thermal. loved the eco but fuck the eco.
For sure, I completely understand, itâs very frustrating with the clogs, Iâve been able to keep the second one going pretty well, just have to print on it every other day at least, and I have been able to unclog it with the kit.
The poorer print quality of the thermal version is the DPI setting that was used. Anything less than 600 DPI is going to have the same problems you're talking about. Incomplete areas, jagged edges on curves and diagonals, etc. Inkjet printers all have the clogged print head issue. Cleaning cycles burn through your inks.
Thank you for the info! I will try adjusting it.
You can send me the old one đ
đI assure you it does not work at all for making stencils that will transfer to skin.
This is a really good printer czcams.com/users/postUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 . The reason I gave 4 stars for tech support (which I don't think this would classify as tech support) is because once you turn the printer on, it does require a little bit of start up time which may bother some who are in a hurry to quickly print something. To offset that though the printer prints very quickly. I would definitely purchase this printer again.
Thank you!

You are so beautiful â€đ đą
Thank you!
Threw away my Epson after buying 3 in 12 months money pit not worth it as I was printing 6 days a week on it Iâm going to buy a thermal just for geometric stuff and script the rest will be hand stencilled dint waste money on eco tanks I learned the hard way
I came to a similar conclusion after going through 3 of them as well, the new thermal printers do just as much detail now as the epson. Check out my comparison video: Best Tattoo Thermal Stencil Printer - Comparison Video
