- My Attempt at Boat Restoration Part 1.
This fibre glass boat is my project, as you can see it was in a bit of a state!
We have only four weeks to finish it - so lots of work for the grandkids!
Don't forget your negative comments, I want this boat to be really good! - Zábava
Great job! Great working with the Grandkids. Looking forward to part two.
good to see the family getting in on the project!, is good for the youngens when they have to remove all the flooring and replace it. Ribs/Stringers should be sealed (resin) before being tabbed in. Floor looked like it wasn't glassed on the underside as well. At-least a single sheet after it's been sealed with resin. If you get water into that bilge area it'll get up into the wood and rot it out.
Thank you... this inspired me to get to some of my projects.
Great stuff mate, thanks for sharing!
its good to watch someone who knows what they are doing,im useless with my hands and if I tried to restore a boat u rest assured it would be a mess.
Very inspirational and informative! Thank you!!
anyone who brings back something from the bin or scrap yard is doing a great job in my book
Great video - I'm just about to start my own attempt at boat restoration so it's good to see what can be done! Is there a part two as it would be nice to see the finished boat!
MrMiniman, Thanks, Merci Y muchas Gracias .Buen trabajo Suerte y Saludo......
fantastic job looks great.
awesome job!
There is no part two because all those bricks sunk the boat.
+Gary Gillette lol
No i hag a treble bypass sorry could not make part 2
Nice project. Good to see old boats take on a new life, but as other have told here you don't need ballast in a runabout. Instead you need to put a good foam flotation in that area. One other thing when working on a fiberglass hull you never let the stringer make contact with the hull. This will cause a HARD SPOT in the hull and the first big wave that hits the hull will cause failure. You always keep the stringers a slight bit above the hull for flex. This can be done with the use of a thin foam running the length of the stringer.
Great Job
Hey MRMiniman43, I've always enjoyed your videos. I'm not 100% certain on fibreglass boats, I worked a few years ago building Aluminium Boats, If you use rivets at any stage (ie. around the window frames, sounders, lights etc.) use higher quality stainless or aluminium rivets, they will last longer if you plan on taking in salt water, plated carbon based rivets and chrome plated rivets will corrode in substantially less time.
Lol you better phone the coast gaurd before you launch with that fiberglass job
good stuff... wheres part 2 !?! (on the edge of my seat)
Really nice work lads well done , did you finish her ?
Desire and determination are the most important ingredients. GOd SPeed.
That's a planning hull not a displacement hull. Ballast is NOT needed or recommended.
OLD DUDE HAS NO IDEA WHAT MODERN FIBER GLASS NEEDS DONE. THAT IS OLD SCHOOL VERY OLD SCHOOL AND COULD BREAK THE BOATS BACK (KEEL) AND GET SOMEONE KILLED! YOUR RIGHT ABOUT THE HULL FOR SURE AS WELL. JUST SAYING, OLD ONE LEGGED JOSEPH T.
Why are you yelling at me?
It is. For submarines
I just lay plywood onto mine filled under neith with foam and fiber glassed over the ply. she can still breath tho as I left front end slight open with some compensators
Great video.. Family project.. Well worth the time! Btw.. What's the song at the beginning?
sorry to disapoint all ,couldent finish this projects because i got severe heart attact,
i had to have a treble by pass, i had to stop all my videos
did you seal the underside of the ply floor with resin
hi Mhannifey when i was on the fishing trawlers. i'am to well aware of sea salt. corrosion on boats.my intentions are to use all stainless where necessary. Thank you for your Comments..........
as long as that ballast don't shift, and you don't want to go too quick should be a stable platform, you may not want to go too far offshore as you won't be able to get back in a hurry
Good on ya for getting your hands dirty mate, nice to see people with a can do attitude
hi great video have you completed the part two video. what are the names of the material you used?
Is part two up ?
can u condition the other stuff before u pull
With the left over resin you could have soaked the plywood, that would seal it.
Hi. Where's part 2?
Where is part 2?
You might want to remove the ballast, small boats are meant to ride over the top of waves not plow through them like a merchant or trawler, with the ballast if you hit a high crest then a low trough the boat will keep going down due to the extra weight (in go the front windows and down goes the boat) apart from that its a semi planing hull designed to skim over the waves, with the extra weight the engine will will strain to keep the hull on the plane, that said happy fishing and stay safe.
Your 100 % correct small boats should never be fitted with ballast they are not ocean going vessels but more a pleasure craft (weekend runabout) if they were meant to have ballast they would have shown them in plans that you can get free online of old boat designs remembering this the old clippers and tallships had ballast they called it cargo.. many sandstock bricks were shipped from england in the late 1700's -1800's to australia using this method most of the inner suburbs of sydney and melbourne dorn these ballast bricks as they were called by many
thank you xxxarkxxx ...........
Loved the restoration but, Damnit Man, the music kept waking up my wife. It was Sooo much louder than the rest of the video. Thanks for the resto... Still holding up well?
hi Flivverford.yes you are right.i havent got a clue about boat's.
that's why.(this video is called. My Attempt at Boat Restoration).O by the way i would rather be in boat.out at sea with ballast.i spent a lot of time on trawler's. and the ballast make's the boat more stable.Thank you for your Comments..........
hey mate whether you have a clue or not whats important is that you have a try so many old boats out ther waiting for someone to renew their love of the water and riding on the peaks of a swell.. how has it handled the ballast has it cause the nose to dip down in choppy water??? small boats really dont need ballast as a lot of people have commentedyou said you used 50 bricks which a brick weighs in at 4.5 kilograms youve added 240 odd kilos of unneeded weight small boats use us as there ballast and what we load into the boat on our day trip.. as far as your repair methods not enough stringers on the hull from what I seen the ribs are fine though the more cross bracing for the floor the better the deck I say... the glassing method of brushing the resin on is fine them rollers tend to get all choked up and are a pain in the proverbial to clean I use a brush on the repairs I have done to my boat however I found the brush and dab method ensures less chance of resin patching the glass...I also saved on timber cost I used 1080 ab construction ply rather then marine play its parctically same glued with same resin but you find a void here and there between the layers ... I just used a suringe and filled them with resin before encasing the cut sections in glass before installing them seems to work for me... hope your enjoying the water and fishing with the family cheers...
MrMiniman43 agree... The ballast will make it stable... Only few will understand it specially if it go's to rough see... Good job man and regards from Bahrain
Mohammed khalil
I have a 5 mtr boat as wel and i use sandbags they use on roadwork.
Red bags and i can move them where i want to get the boat linedout. And in the frindside is good to have ballast.
I have a yamaha 115 2 stroke and goes very well because of the ballast.
Best captains are standing......something like that.
Regards from a dutchman👍🏻
Yes my boat has no added ballast its a 19ft Four Winns Horizon 190

@@MrMiniman43 prayers for you brother pray you are doing well
than a few small med rivetts just a few beamm idea
I might be wrong but are those ballast bricks lead ? I am not quite sure if those are necessary given the size of the vessel but I might be wrong about that as well. One thing I am sure of is, a little more scrutiny should have been applied in the choice of that hull and the so called restoration methods are in question I hope and pray that all who sail on ol Alice come back to the dock as many times as they go out on her . . At least the bricks will ensure a swift trip to Davie Jones Locker so as not to be a hazard to navigation and the offense to the eye God speed and all who sail on Ol Alice
have you ever been on a boat with no ballas i have thank you for comments
i like shallow draft vessel
Is she maybe one of the Microplus models?

add thinner too ah she hass too soak and be some excat hardness soft??????????
why did he put bricks into a boat that dont have ballas .there was non in to start with
On a small boat at sea it's very rocky. There doesn't need to be a high swell to be unstable. Thanks for your comment.
Get rid of the bricks and do a proper job with the fiberglass repair!
HI DOES ANYBODY OUT THERE KNOW. THE NAME OR ( MAKE OF THE BOAT? HULL ) THANKS.........MrMiniman43...
WTF is up with all the bricks???? I think this guy was a mason not a shipwright.
water meant to be on outside lol
This is too painful to watch any futher!

thanks for the reply, that being said did they get any other part of you like they did me (left leg) is gone because of the congestive heart failure. hope to see the boat done, and running on the water, Old One Legged Joseph T.
still going to
No so sure of your methodology. Bricks? unsealed wood? no screws? how can you saturate glass that is lying on unsealed wood? not to mention the bond strength is compromised.
man i thinh id build them ep and buried rivvets
Suzette Gilbert are you drunk or high ? You sound like you are and what are you trying to say here?
fold a catttchh cupp let ur tack aliittllee and use when u lift too leave
