My Book List: bit.ly/jfbooklist
In 2018 I decided to read a book a week for the entire year. We're halfway through, so this is a review of all of the books that I have read so far including lessons from each of them. I hope that you enjoy!

Missed a few books! I have also read Crushing It, Buffetology, and Good to Great! Currently reading "Thus Spoke Zarathusra" and "Meditations" (Nietzsche and Aurelius). Full list on bit.ly/jfbooklist! What books have you guys been reading? Always looking for recommendations!
Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harrari
W. Somerset Maugham, Hermann Hesse, and Fyodor Dostoevsky are solid novelists. I'm interested to hear what you think of Thus Spoke Zarathustra.
Check out Ryan Holiday's books, he said he read meditations 100 times over the years and distills stoic philosophy into something easily digestible. "The Obstacle is the Way" and "Ego is the Enemy" are two of his books, he also helped research a book called "Mastery" which outlines how masters (Di Vinci, Mozart) have different strategies to becoming great.
If you like Psychology, i can recommend the other books by Malcolm Gladwell (David vs. Goliath, Tipping Point & Blink) similar to Outliers
Try reading HitchHikers' Guide to The Galaxy sometime! Elon Musk has cited it as the book that changed his outlook on life. I am currently reading it, and it has been absolutely fantastic so far, though admittedly, not mind-blowing for me. Would love to hear your thoughts about the book
This video is gold. Please do a follow up video after 6 months.
Yes!
It about that time
Is there a follow up?
"A writer only begins a book. A reader finishes it." -Samuel Johnson
Thanks for sharing that great quote Matt.
Matt McNabola the actor?
TraumaER no, the writer
The actor you're thinking of is Samuel L. Jackson, not Samuel Johnson.
TraumaER HAHAHAH samuel johnson actually created the first english dictionary !
For your age, I think it is amazing how mindful of life you are. Keep up the channel

Oh my gosh your videos just keep getting better and better! You really inspire me
I read "Man's search for meaning" in two weeks after watching the movie "The Pianist", wrote a review and some notes for myself, spent some time reading about the Holocaust and will read it again next year. This book remains the greatest influence this year on me as it made me realise that in our hardest time, we humans can have such incredible strengths to overcome difficulties and succeed in finding the meaning of life. The book and its success in describing the pure acknowledgment of the reality in the camps urged me to talk about it, to write about it and to share it.
I discovered this guy today and I love him
I just discovered him today and I am like WOW
Just wanted to say that you've inspired me to read a book a week myself (on top of my for-fun reading). I'm only one month in but I've already started investing money, improving relationships with friends, and I even got new clients for my business!
Absolute genius. How did you manage reading all these extra books while taking care of your study and social activities and editing videos for such a great CZcams channel 😂?
Same doubt?
Haha you have to cut off something to do it
@@maritareads5229 Mobile phone!?
@@shubhamhundet8351 yeah a big one is cutting down social media time and Netflix/tv for me. Also I'm listening to more audiobooks instead of podcasts. You'd be surprised at how much "free" time you have

I’m doing this same challenge thanks to your motivating videos! I’m currently reading “Drive” by Daniel H. Pink. Since late last month I’ve read 4 books that were on your Amazon list and all four have been amazing. Thanks for sharing with us you, your channel has really helped me make positive changes in my life.
Is that you Chris Breezy? Keep up the positivity.
Chris Brown OMG I stumbled upon Daniel Pink's twitter account this morning and guess what. I wasn't able to attend classes cause I was sooo into his tweets LMAO thanks for the recommendation!!
Thank you John for your recommendations. I just ordered four of the books and are so excited!!
Thank you so much John! I appreciate your videos so much. You have no idea how much they help me:)
I love how visibly excited you got as you climbed towards #1. Great video as always, John! Will definitely check out some of your recommendations. Thank you for making this world a better place. If I were to compile a similar list on content creators who have the most impact, you'll be among the top ones. :)
Great summary thanks John .. I love your channel and I appreciate your efforts.
Keep up the great work! My friend has been suffering from depression. He has watched your videos and they have helped him and he now lives a happy life. Thank you so much!
I’m reading The Power of Habit right now and I love it! It’s all about how habits form and how to change them at a personal and business level. Highly recommend!!

Fantastic quality and content as always.
Fantastic video. Really appreciate the ordered list and quick synopses - that's not easy to do! Keep up the great work.
Great advice, thank you :)
I like how your videos are very original and very youu. You are not trying to be someone else. Stick to it. You will go to great heights. Good luck :))
Thank you so much for these reviews!
Need more videos like this, so many books out there and not sure which ones to read but lists like this help me choose
I’m trying to do that to !!
If you wanna try more fiction:
Time machine
Animal farm
Of mice and men
The stranger
I swear by these 4!
also 1984 by George Orwell (he also wrote animal farm!)
thank you!
Will try this. Just started reading.
Why no Dostoevsky? :(
I have been waiting for this video for a such long time .. thank youuuuuu for make it .
What I love about your videos in general, including this video, is that they are never really clickbait. I never end up feeling like I have been cheated of entertainment or learning. Both somehow always happen in your video. Like from this one, I am taking back a great list of books, and your honest opinions about them. Great work man!
Yea John at least somebody is completing their resolutions
Hey John you should read The Dragon of Eden by Carl Sagan, it gets a little bit too technical in some chapters but it is very interesting, it shows you how most humans think they are superior to other animals but how much we resemble to them. It does a great job into bringing back awareness into realizing that we are actually animals just like any other specie, and its also cool to learn a little bit about the brain and evolution.
Hmm good recommendation!
carl sagan is the real deal
oaksterdam Homo Sapiens, which he went over in this video, is actually just like a book that you recommended.
+lonely wolf
yeah sounds like it, though I think the one from Carl Sagan is more about speculations about how it happened
I enjoy your videos so much. Please don’t stop, you are doing a great job.
You're very inspiring. I've been looking for someone like you on youTube for ages! Quality content
Hello John, that's really really interesting ! i've started the same challenge in january 18th, i've read already 23 books, and it is funny because i've read some of your books and learned the same things you describe ! "Flow" was last week and Outliers was this week ! How funny ! EVERYONE should try this challenge. Like you said, it's changing your life, you learn A LOT ! John, may i suggest some some books i think you might enjoy because you'll learn great things : "What doesn't kill us (Scott Carney)" "Teach like a pirate" (Dave Burgess), "Deep Work" (Cal Newport), "the 7 habits of highly effective people" (Stephen Covey). If you like memoirs, you might like "Total Recall" (Arnold Schwarzenegger), and as you like a bit of philosophy, i would suggest also "thoughts for myself" (Marc Aurelius, the roman emperor) Thank you for your list, i'll buy some more books now haha :D
how do you read that fast and retain information? i struggle heaps
You actually made me realize how precious books are and how enriching the time reserved for this is. Thank you so much!
Came across your channel just a week ago, and after watching your videos i’d say you’re such an inspiration. This video motivated me to start reading more often!! Keep making these videos they’re amazing :)
I actually love your videos! everything you say seems to come in a Inspiring manner, and your tips really help me.
Hi John! Do you ever read fictional books? I mean fantasy, crime books, etc. If so, do you have a favourite?
John's mom here. THIS IS WHAT I KEEP ASKING HIM TOO.
Hi John's mom!
Susan Fish your son is really inspirational and intelligent. You must be really proud of him.
Hi John's mom! You must be proud of your son, he is really hardworking and inspirational!
Judging by how little he thought of Origin, I doubt it's his cup of tea.
Love Man's Search for Meaning and Sapiens, so I'll have to check out Flow. You should also check out the Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom by Jonathan Haidt. It kind of follows a similar blueprint to finding happiness, but it's also fascinating as it examines the realm of ancient wisdom/mysticism in the context of modern neuroscience.
i really loved this video and found it extremely inspiring
being a huge book lover myself, i love sharing this passion with others and what really struck me was how you turned reading into a tool to improve who you are everyday
thank you so much for sharing these !
i also wanted to ask if you have any podcast recommendations because it is a habit that i would really like to get into, but don't really know where to start
thank you again john 😊
John, Congrats, this is the first time listen to your videos. I fell in love with the topic of READING. Great job young men. God bless.
One thing I've learned in life is that wisdom can only be transferred halfway. Knowledge and information are different things. To acquire wisdom, you have to experience things yourself.
Thank you for sharing this! This is very profound and true.
I am really looking forward to do this and you are a great role model man keep it up👌👌 Thank you very very much for all the effort you put in for us💙💙💙
There isn’t enough time in the day to watch your incredibly eye opening content, I really relate to your videos and I hope you will post more as often as possible. You are a truly incredible man my friend!

Hey John! I just recently came across your channel and you’re truly an inspiration. I was wondering if you knew how long it would be before your growth books would be back in stock. Keep up the great work!
Try 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene. Helped me a lot at work and relationships. Noted your top 6 books :)
I'm happy to see " man's search for meaning " as the top 1 .
Excellent booklist ... thanks John..

I agree with your number one book! I love the Man's Search for Meaning so much! So much emotion and lesson in this! 💙
simply loved this list
Read Arnold Schwarzenegger’s autobiography Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story
Did you just read or jot some notes while reading?
idk abt him but when i read , if i find something which is very useful or jus amazing i will underline or highlight it definitely ....i don't like to take notes in a separate book as it seems like an academic thing lol
I‘d love to know as well :)
How to Read a Book by Mortimer Adler, this great book can answer your question.
I jot down notes on a separate notebook to organize key concepts mentioned in each chapter. It's so much smarter to have a quick reference rather than have to look where you wrote each important concept.
Lily Jasmine People do this? I just read and remember everything.
Bro you are the truth you inspired me so much this year keep it going
Another amazing video John!
What is your all-time favorite book?
I Write A Song A Day flow
Hey John! have you ever read the autobiography of Malcolm X? its a great book!
Matt, I definitely agree with you. I look up to Malcolm X, and his autobiography made me realize that is life is truly an inspiration. John should really read it.
I'm reading it now and halfway through it. I'm loving it!
awesome!
Because of you, I read “Man’s search for meaning” over the past week; and it has significantly changed me. The suffering that those people went through is astronomical and makes all of my own struggles laughable. Because of this book, I go out into the world now and see just how fucking good I have it. The lessons in that book are truly incredible and emotionally impactful. After finishing this book, I feel so happy just to have the relationships and good health that I now don’t feel I deserve. I’ve always been inspired to help others around me feel better, but this just makes it that much easier for me to keep the right mindset going. I’ve already had a much easier time connecting with people and cheering them up wherever I go, and I owe it to this book, and of course you. Keep creating ripples man; from my personal experience, I know a video like this has the power to change infinite lives in the future! Thank you 🙏☺️
I love your style and this channel!
Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari
Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow by Yuval Noah Harari
They are two great books!
Incredible books
why arent you uploading stuff anymore? THE INTERNET NEEEEEEEEEEEEDSSS YOUUUUUU !!
Sapiens is one of my favorite books ever. I love how it focuses on the big picture unlike many other history books.
Great video! I think it’s really a good way to reflect on the books on the basis of their impact, since we often forget what we read after a certain period of time. Gonna check those books out. Love your video, bro.
How you choose the books you read? You are very motivational
Since I saw John's first video about reading a book a week, I decided to try it out, read 8 so far, so this is how I did it (even though its not that much) read one book from a writer, if you like it, you will find other books from that author you'll like.
I also took recommendations from other people, including influencers, friends, or people I talk to on IG haha.
Audible and amazon(i think) give you recommendations after you read one book, so you'll find well rated books from the same category just by looking for one. I hope that helps :)
I really recommend if you are into the IT and social media world, "hatching twitter".
Kyrana Lilia Think of issues that can be interesting to you or draw your attention in a public library or bookstore
You should really try getting "12 Rules For Life - An Antidote To Chaos" by Dr. Jordan B. Peterson. It's one the best books I have read in 2018 - it contains a brilliant psychoanalytic perspective at philosophy and other branches of study. It's self-help, but coherent and applicable.
Le HippieVibe Isn’t he that Canadian Nazi?
@@phone5579 no, but the book is excessively long considering the substance
@@phone5579 Hahaha you are such a triggered leftist. JP isnt even right wing, he's to the right of marxism, but anyone sane is nowadays
Thank you so much for your recommendations John!!! I'm on quarantine and I'm taking advantange of all this, greetings from Argentina!!
Thanks for the recommendations. I haven’t read many of these books. I guess I’ll start now.
Out of curiosity for someone who wants to read more how much time did you have to take out of tv (shows & movie watching) time to this far?
JLCodes Excellent question. I look to movies and TV for fiction, but books for non fiction subjects.
It’s individual to everyone but a good way to work out what yours is to pick up a book and read for an hour then count how many pages you’ve read. I think if I remember correctly that most people read around 50-70 pages an hour. So if you read at this speed and you’ve got a 300 page book to read it’s going to take you about 5-6 hours.
How long you take to read will vary depending on your own reading speed, if you skim read, what books you’re reading, if you take notes... Also if you’re out of the habit of reading or don’t read often you might find yourself speeding up as you get into it.
But doing this gives you a basic ball park to work in.
Edit: I’d recommend anyone aiming to read more but who doesn’t read very much at the moment tries reading really widely at first. Get Goodreads, look for things that catch your eye on it, make an Amazon wish list, get recommendations from friends. Try not just non-fiction and fiction but history, biography, autobiography, science books, self improvement, historical fiction, graphic novels, sci-fi, fantasy, classics, YA... that way you have an idea of what your reading is for. Do you want to challenge yourself or is it more about having fun?
You might like to read only educational things and save TV for entertainment. Or you might find reading is really relaxing so you like to read YA or Nickolas Sparks romance novels to unwind before bed. Or you might like to read philosophy to broaden your mind but also read sci-fi for escapism. Even if you find you absolutely adore detective stories and would happily only read them for the rest of your life I’d keep regularly trying new things every now and again because you might discover something else you have a passion for and love equally as much.
Hallie Hurst Also if you're reading a book that's not written with your mother tounge, you'll spend more time deepening on how hard the book is for you.
Aisha Alward Fair point. Often when I read various writers on a common topic I have to remind myself that I’m only reading English writers or works that have been translated.
aisha....may be u can start books with authors whose native language isn't english too ...like going by your name i can tell u might be an indian ...so go with indian english authors for getting acclimated with the english writing as their english is pretty easy and not so subtle to understand ...
Mr. Fish can you please restock your Growth book. I would love to buy one.
Thank You
This is amazing stuff, John.
love your reviews
You do not read any classic? Any good old literature?
He's in CS. Occupational hazard?
one question ! how do you afford a book a week ?
Edit: Thanks for all the ideas I will try this challenge too
OM already used books maybe? I can Imagine that regarding the looks of e.g. flow, that he buys used and therefore cheaper books... So like around 5-8€ and ordering them at the same time can save shipping so 6,5€ × 50= 325€. And also borrow and buy from Friends and local events where they also sell used books? (Dont know if this is common in the US)
The library, just swipe the card and check out the book. He's in Harvard, pretty sure there is a library on campus
Kenyatte Jay what’s sad is that probably 95% of today’s hs student never been to a library before.

Or the Thrift Books website

The emotion of your delivery of information about books made me cry. Thank you.
Phenomenal video. I really appreciate the books reviews.
I tried this habit few years ago, with sci-fi/noir, thriller and few psychological books from Doctor Wayne Dyer.
The most important thing that I have learned is : 99% of cases, too much time waisted on the so called "inspirational" books. with the exception of "Your erroneous zones" and now "Flow". I learned so much from Asimov's books and stories that you cannot immagine. As well as for Bradbury and Dick.
According to me, what change life is that you started this process and at the end of it you will be a better man, but simply because of the commitment that it takes, not for all the stupid things that are written on those books.
I agree, but admittedly he's still pretty young. I wouldn't care for most of these, but I can't say that a 20 year old version wouldn't.
I am 25 y.o. , but of course everyone needs to go through a path to understand something. I guess, as smart as he seems to be, he will figure things out earlier than I did
I agree with you. Most of the things I have read and i still think about daily, I have learned from reading sci-fi books and other fiction. They are like thought-experiments and really make me think about the world in new ways. I read 1984 by George Orwell when i was 19 and now five years later, it is still one of the most impactful books i have ever read.
Also, is your channel name from the Foundation trilogy by Isaac Asimov? I am currently reading that book :)
Yes, The foundation is my favourite story so far. I read all the 7 books, non only the trilogy, from Prelude to Foundation to Foundation and Earth. I really enjoyed how Hari Seldon has been introduced in the first one, and many other things that I cannot say now ( spoiler ).
Plus, 1984, along with The time Machine, really enhanced my perception of things.
Really appreciated you comment, though.
Have a great day, from Italy =)
Hey John, focus on quality, not quantity. One book a week is too much. Do not be just a fast consumer. Some books, like the one from Frankl, need to be read and 'digested' slowly. You also need to get back to them more times and re-read some parts to really understand them. Also, given your age, you may find some part more relevant than others but as you mature and grow, other parts, ideas may appeal too you more. The opposite goes for the books you find 'shallow', boring...Do not feel like you have to read/ listen to them till the end. Wish you insipring reading!
Johan Hoon to be fair, since many of the books are self-help or nonfiction, i think they can be read faster. if you’re going to read james joyce, for example, that requires much more mental effort to read and understand. (plus all self help/motivational books are lowkey the same lmao) but i totally agree about the quality over quantity!!
I was amazed when your number one book was Man's Search for Meaning. I read it years ago, when I was struggling with a young family, work, relationships, etc. It literally changed my way of thinking. Its lessons have stood me in good stead over the years and I re-read it occasionally. I'm pleased that a younger generation is reading and appreciating it too.
I'm just 3 minutes in but I can already tell thta this would be one of the most helpful videos i've ever watched on CZcams. Thanks John!
Read “How to Read a Book” by Mortimer J. Adler and The Holy Bible 🙂
The Bible is a great choice 👍🏾👍🏾
Idk why but when I read books I always forgot the character names but i remember the story and the story behind the characters :/
Haretz tj same..
Innocentface 247 looks like we're on the same boat ;)
I've many times heard that smart (or something along those lines) people remember the ideas while less smart would remember the events and the least would remember names. Its supposed to be an ethics lesson type of thing about how we should focus on the real meaning behind things instead of gossipping about people but maybe its the same logic?
may be the names in the story aren't from ur native language or they aren't popular names ..if not idk
When I read books,I mostly remember about the story, the lessons and the story behind each characters. But the date, the name of the place and the characters’ name i most likely to forget EXCEPT the main character name
Btw,books doesnt rlly improve my language but it does improve on how I think, general knowledge and the changes of myself as a person so sorry if my english is bad(english is my 2nd language.Malay is my 1st language)
Wow thanks so much for the book list! I really appreciate it. Also great video, keep it up! :)
thanks for your recommendation!! that’s amazing!
In terms of non-fiction I highly recommend: Between the World and Me by Ta Nehisi Coates, Evicted by Matthew Desmond, and Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson!!! MUST READS.
Between the World and Me IS A GREAT BOOK.
You should try reading good fiction. It's worth it
Bruno Bezerra That’s always a challenge for me. For fiction I look to movies and TV.
when a movie or series is made out of a book , if it is well made then i got no beef with it but mostly the enjoyment and the involvement which the book gives u will always surpass the movie ....but an advantage of movies is that they have music ...i love good bgm .......read the sea wolf by jack london you will love it
Your description of the book ‘Flow’ deeply touched me. You’re the reason I’m going to read this book hopefully and for that I am thankful.
Whenever l seek motivation on CZcams, l end up watching one of your videos. No matter what it's about, they all have been inspirational for me. Thank you!
