- In this episode, I ride further into Zanskar valley. The road I'm following at first, is relatively new and only exists for a few years. Before that, people from villages like Lingshed, where I spend the night at a homestay, had to walk for days. In winter, the only way out of the snowed in valley was walking over the frozen Zanskar river, also for days on end... It's a magical place!

"Don't be Gama in the Land of Lama" serves as a vital reminder on roadways. It's inspired by a story of Gama, an overconfident mountain dweller who ignored safety and damaged trails, leading to his own injury. This tale underscores the importance of humility and respect for nature in the mountains.
In Yellowstone we are telling people to not be Tourons (moronic tourist)
"Lama" refers to the Buddhist monks who live in Ladakh, and "Gama" is a Ladakhi word that means "ignorant" or "uncivilized"
A great lesson for us, wherever we find ourselves 💚humility and respect for nature
This philosophy is alien to most Americans.
Modern humans (at least the city dwellers) fail to understand that if you don't humble yourself while you are in nature, nature will take care of that for you. Great content as always.
Wow, what an incredible route! Isn't it remarkable that in a country with a population of 1.4 billion, Noraly still has "got the place to myself!" What an impressive, diverse and beautiful country!
You would't write it like this if you knew something about population density.
India is vast.. it's a world in itself..
From Icey mountains to sea shores, from deep jungles to dry deserts... India has it all...
I had a similar thought, with a population of billions she has strayed to a far corner and found herself alone. The inverse of population density is human scarcity.
India is a big country. It's the 7th largest country in land area. India is around half of Europe in size. Most of population lives in clusters of cities and villages. More than half of India is empty having jungles, mountains and barren lands. Only the cities are densely populated.
Most population is clustered in plains like ganga. All other places have less populated.
BRO has some of the funniest road safety signs . My favourite are “love your children at home , belt them in the car” & “ don’t hug the curves , just feel them “ 😂

Unless you ride a motorcycle, you cannot appreciate how physically tough and challenging the non-paved roads are. Someday if Royal Enfield makes an incredibly durable, tough, motorcycle, they must call that model the Noraly. Adventure riders worldwide will show up to buy one and of course, they'll call their ride "Itchy".

I’m surprised Honda didn’t jump on the bandwagon and name a bike after Norlay. Especially the 300 model she has ridden all over parts of our planet. What better way to get your product advertised all over the world. If a bike manufacturer ever does name a bike after her, I will be first one to purchase it. They definitely need to be paying her royalties.
Letting Noraly loose on the new Himalayan in the Himalayas is a masterstroke by Royal Enfield, and shows the high esteem to which Noraly is held. What an adventure!

While she struggled to get the smallest parts from Honda. Big Red has really missed the boat on supporting her in her African travels.

Interesting how a country with nearly 20% of all Earth's population can have at the same time so many landscapes devoid of any human soul for kilometers and kilometers, again and again. This is truly amazing. The power of the nature.

The lanscape is is so far up the Himalayan mountains and almost unhabitable. It's extremely harsh and unforgiving. A small mistake in day to day life can easily mean death.
It's the border literally no one loves there except Army and Some government officials
India is almost the same population of Europe and almost as big if you don’t add the Russian part that lies in Europe
Humans tend to live stuck up in cities. But masisve density of Indian population live in Indus-Ganga-brahmaputra formed Fertile Plains . Once before formation of himalayas these rivers were one single river.

This is more isolated than any part of the world . Very difficult to build roads at that height

It's true you don't need a big GS but I have no problem picking mine up. But at 6'3" and 18 stone it's also the smallest bike I own. 🤣

Only cities and villages are densely populated and do you know India is 7 th largest nation in the world? We have nearly 40% land area is empty occupied by mountain, desert, forest etc..
1.5 billion people are busy in there daily grind
And 1/5th of those 1.45 billion people live in couple of states only. 😂

I found this info regarding the sign. Great vid. Stay safe. Thanks for taking us along, Noraly. The meaning of Lama is associated with Buddhism. In Buddhism Lama Is Guru or Highest Teacher. So in Buddhist culture lama is weather and mountains which are associated with true learning about survival. The mountains are land of Lama. This saying is based on an old Pahadi story. A boy named Gama was very naughty. He used to live in the mountains and trekking was very easy for him, by the time he grew he got overconfident about his skills and started avoiding people teachings about safety. He started avoiding fixed trails and also started damaging trails by sliding big rocks in them. This manner also disturbed other people too. One day he went out of the town and went on the some mountain but somehow when he was climbing the mountain slipped and fall on the rocks which were previously moved by him to disfigure the trail. His leg and hand was brutally broken. But somehow people searched him alive. He became totally disabled by his own overconfident. Hence the saying became popular, “Don’t be Gama in the Land of Lama.”
Another take on this is " dont try to be the legendary wrestler named Gama in the land of lamas( buddhist monks)....ie dont try your might against nature!...

Was hiking in Zanskar like 25+ years ago. It was still a very, very remote part of the world then. There was no road between Darcha and Padum yet, only a footpath suitable for hikers and horses. It was a tough hike but the scenery is simply amazing and people in Zanskar are wonderfull.
We too in 1985 and such a privelege. Ten days walking from Lamayuru monastery to Padum with a wonderful pony man to carry our luggage on his animals and who directed us and was waiting with tea and tsampa at the end of each day. Four very high passes, camping only option and near zero population and we were seven kilos lighter when we reached Padum. Over a lifetime of epic journeys in 89 countries this trip was equal among the three best.
I did the same in 1991. Out of interest, what are the other two out of your best three?

Great video, beautiful shoots and great filming I cycled from Leh to Srinagar in spring 1984 (actually I cycled from Calcutta to Nepal and then to Leh via Himachal Pradesh etc. over 1 year), when there was no road to Manali or to Zankar yet, and NO black top road from Leh to Srinagar and NO traffic, except a few army trucks once a day. It was the most beautiful, peaceful cycle ride one can imagine. Watching your video, times have changed for sure!

Oddly enought I was thinking of Noraly's parents too while watching this video. They must be so proud of what their now-famous daughter has accomplished. And oh, the anxiety they must have shared with all of us when she gets into sticky situations in the jungles and deserts in the remote corners of our planet.
Gama is the name of a guy, who was climbing in the mountains and Lama stands for the gods of the mountains. So, it means, don't underestimate the mountains like this guy! Have good journey! You're the best!🙋🏻♀

Anyone reading this, if you visit india or are an indian i highly recommend doing the Kishtwar-Killar route part of which is known as the Cliffhanger section, probably the worlds most fangerous route. Go from Srinagar to Kishtwar via Sinthan Top (beautiful route) and then from Kishtwar to Killar and from Killar to Dalhousie via the Sach pass. Incredible views, very tough and extremely satisfying for a biker.
Those drone shots are really quite something! What a fantastic road and what a difference to your Africa trip. My heart’s in India!

The 2018 version of fearless Noraly vs Noraly 2.0 of 2023, riding this region is just amazing, experience wise. You may have taken 3.5 hrs back in the beginning but not todays Noraly. Fantastic ride! It is so obvious why you wanted to revisit this awesome region! Loved it! Mega thumbs up!
As an indian from the Valley, I would ask more and more travellers like Noraly to visit the heaven on Earth.
INDIAN authorities and Government have helped Ladakh and Kashmir valley by removing the temporary status and making my land as Intergral part of Indian territory and since then development of road and infrastructure is on the rise.
This increases our chances at survival and tevival of our lost culture and the cultures of tibet after chinese occupation.
I would like to ask world travellers to come and see the beauty of Ladakh , Zanskar, Darsik , Nubra, Leh and many other places.
I hope our land gets properity!

If riding it looks scary and tough...imagine the men who built these roads on those heights, harsh weather, thin air, inhospitable terrains and with tools and machinery which are difficult to operate at that height. SALUTE to them!
Those roads are an engineering marvel that we take for granted. For example besides all the blasting that must have been done to cut that road through the mountains, where did they get all that asphalt for those beautiful stretches of road? Bill These asphalted roads are newly done due to the PLA incursion into India by Indian Army's border roads organization. Its among the highest battlefields on earth and they have army folks stationed through out the year and even when the temps go negative 30 or 40 C.
@@jeyalakshmisivaramapillai1869 I suspected there was a military need and backing behind it. There is another mountain road in Romania like that built for defense, the Transfagarasan mountain road built in the 1970s by Ceausescu to try to repel a possible Soviet invasion.

Also Some roads are capable of landing small fighter jets for obvious reasons, If any provocation from Chinese side happens.
@@billwebb8561 BRO develops and maintains road networks in India's border areas and friendly neighboring countries. Most of the roads in the sparsely populated himalayan regions are maintained by BRO(plowing the snow etc) But not all of them are built by BRO. Many are National and State highways built by the central and state governments like how other normal roads are made in India.

Noraly sure knows how to pick some spectacular roads to ride on!!!! I am just amazed not only at how good most of the roads are, but the effort needed to make and maintain them!!!!
these roads r made and maintained by B.R.O ( border road org.) who made a world record by building "UMLINGLA PASS" the highest motorable road in the world at 19300 ft. above sea level .
Absolutely awesome Noraly. The vision of the Himalia's is absolutely fantastic. Such a remarkable scenery and wild mountain formations is incredible. I love the way you mix motorbike riding with geology. Many thanks.
The scenery is so spectacular it's a wonder that Noraly can remember to stop and fly the drone for those impressive aerial shots. I'm also impressed that the locals bother to pave portions of those mountain roads with so little vehicular traffic. And you have to wonder how they get those excavators up there to maintain the dirt portions. Most of those crawler rigs only have a top speed of 4 miles per hour.
They carry the crawler on trucks.
This is a key road that connects Kargil which houses a strategic army garrison.
Without this road, during the winters, kargil can be cut off and overrun by the Chinese or the Pakistanis.
Noraly, you are a legend.
Not many men, let alone a woman would adventure out alone on the high mountain passes of Ladakh and Zanzkar. Thanks for taking on your journey, sharing the stunning landscapes and interaction with the people of the region.

Having been there myself I know the challenges of these mountain roads and trails which can throw a few surprises.
Most if us do these adventure trips as part of a small group. Not so with Noraly! She does it solo. Often, I pray for her safety and well being, like she is a close friend or family member...that is the kind of effect she has has on many of us who have faithfully followed her travels over the years.

It was a wise choice to take on this last 50 when you're fresh. The rockslides can be debilitating and the random takes on drainage problems on the roadways can lead to crashes. Gotta protect those mirrors... Your drone shots show just how small and insignificant we are in this world we live on... keep on keeping on!

Absolutely loving this series. The scenery is out of this world, and Noraly's commentary really conveys her love for the mountains and people of this part of our planet. Her riding abilities are fantastic, I'd like to see some GS guys trying to ride down some of those roads with such confidence. Just proves that you don't need a big bike to enjoy yourself.

Remember, Last time in India when you were riding from Coochbehar to Tura, Meghalaya. You took the wrong road and end up at Brahmaputra River near Dhubri. Actually Im from Siliguri which is pretty close to Coochbehar and My girlfriend is from Tura. So last year in October for the first time I was traveling to Tura on a bike & That video helped me a lot or else i would've followed the Google map and most probably end up at the Brahmaputra River just like you 😄

Amazing environment. So dry and not friendly to plant life, almost no green anywhere, yet people live there and seem to survive. Such a different civilization from what I'm used to in the U.S. and Canada.

Spectacular topography. Incredible landscape. Aired high altitude environment. Glacier river gorge / canyon. The single track path a challenging ride. Switchbacks… descending & climbing. I loved the huge copper pots on the walls of the place you had your breakfast. Great ride. Thanks for sharing.

You should go on a bike trip to these fantastic places in India, like from Gangtok to Nathu La, Coorg to Munnar, Bhalukpong to Tawang, the Rann of Kutch, or from Valparai to Vazhachal Forest. Especially, you should ride through the Western Ghats in South India and the Eastern Himalayas in Northeast India. These are some of the most amazing places in India.
Yes, the landscapes are gorgeous, the riding is excellent and exciting, but what the world could really use is more of your openness and Joy to live!!!

When you can see that it is very steep on the video you know that it is actually 2x steeper than it looks. Impressive riding skills, especially on extremely steep downhills with rough terrain.

Thanks Noraly bringing back so many memories of the Himalayas are they are my favorite adventure bike tour with the awesome local ABoriginal Indian motor bike tours on of course Royal Enfield , I missed out on getting a Himalayan 411 but had so much fun on the 500 classic 🙂🤙
