The actor playing Apone was a real drill sergeant, so his acting in this is authentic. Also, Cameron kept all the actors separated in training so that when Ripley joined the crew it would be more realistic and she'd be meeting them all for the first time. Weaver was staunchly anti-gun her whole life so her handling of guns in this is really her first experience, which adds to the realism of her getting to grips with the weaponry.
There are a lot of reasons why this movie still holds up today, but even though it was extremely hard on the cast and crew with a whole lot of drama behind the scenes, it's easily one of the best movies Cameron has ever created.

Theatrical doesn’t even tell us it was Newts dad who gets face hugged. Ripley’s whole convo with Burke about sending them out there goes from just being a throw away sentence in the movie to a thing we actually see happen. Seeing the colonists living their every day lives showed us the scale of the operation, how many people were there - so when they are all dead we know what it had been like before - vs again just showing up to an empty facility, no idea who or what was going on, if it was lots of people etc etc….added more understanding of how much carnage actually took place when you see them living and working there first.

One detail I like is that while the LT is definitely junior and very new, when shit gets hot he reacts calmly and visibly takes deep breaths and issues orders calmly and professionally, he does the right things, and in normal circumstances he probably would have done just fine. But everything happened so quickly and people died left and right, it was too much. He WAS a good Lt, it’s shown blatantly later when he goes back to save his Marine (Vasquez) even knowing it’s probably suicide. And goes down swinging. Every single character in this movie has so much depth, it’s what makes it so rewatchable. We’ll never have a movie like this again.

      @@adrianharrell87
      That's correct, mate..
In the original Aliens, when the face hugger that emerges from the egg to attack Kane, he's wearing his full suit, complete with a sealed helmet..
But you can clearly see in several scenes that the face hugger has secreted & used some of its acidic blood somehow, to melt & weaken the helmets faceshield, and help it get in & gain access to his face..
This is why it's re-confirmed for us several times in part 2, that the aliens can & do secrete their internal fluids, both as acidic defence, and to form the moldable resins that harden into a similar texture & consistency as their own carapace..that they use to create their hive, and cocoon their prey for the queen & her eggs.
The face huggers & their embryos are very highly adaptable, which shows the Xenomorphs are a very 'advanced' race in terms of biology..as this is very rare in nature, where mixing different breeds usually causes a lot of problems on a genetic level..
That the Xeno's are the opposite, and have adapted to do & be the exact opposite, and can use virtually any other species that's a viable host..(as we saw with them using humans, dogs & Yautya all just fine, and adapting to the DNA of their hosts, while keeping all of their own traits as well..
To be able to take on & assimilate the DNA & characteristics of very different species..is an evolutionary masterwork, and it was either only achieved through genetic engineering..(as the later Predator/Yautya vs Alien franchise makes clear was the case)..or, back when Cameron & Giger created them, and there was no such backstory..just a race of giant, bipedal insect Xenomorphs..then we're talking atvleast hundreds, if not thousands, of years of natural evolutionary evolvement..between the evolution of extremely acid for blood, (that oxidizes on contact with air, fairly soon after, largely neutralizing it)..
Which is a supurb defence mechanism for any species to evolve, because you can't safely prey on it, or attack it in any meaningful way..without extreme risk to yourself from its own blood..that's an excellent evolutionary defence right there, just in itself..
But once you also add in the often-overlooked equal ability to secrete your own internal building materials, for making your own home/nest, and imprisoning your own prey..makes you pretty self-sufficent..no matter how scarce or hostile an environment they find themselves in, on any world they wind up on..
And getting through any unknown materials an opponent or other race puts up to keep you out..like their very tough polycarbonate helmet faceshields, like the one Kane was wearing..
Meaning they don't need to rely on any outside source for construction materials..not like birds making a nest, or others..And they can get past, or adapt to, any other species & their created environments.
They clearly don't need to eat much, as there was zero evidence or lore in either of the first 2 movies that they ate at all..in part 1, Kane's Chestburster went through its entire growth lifecycle fast..and there was no evidence that it ate anything directly..
So unless it simply absorbs enough on a DNA or molecular level from attacking folks all the time, or it gets a feed from blood and that's the reason for their inner jaws being used during attacks, then..strictly speaking, it 'ate' nothing the entire movie..
That kind of biological development is usually extremely high in food/nutrient/energy requirements & expenditure.
They are remarkably prehensile & articulated in their bodies & movements, can traverse any environment, and are both highly group and hive-mentality intelligent individually, as well as supurb team players.
Xeno's can set themselves up anywhere, secrete & make their own nests, and building/working materials, be highly adapdable to living in other species infrastructure, just like most insects, but on even the DNA level, to using other species to multiply & improve themselves & their own..and are exceedingly dangerous, even for any other highly predatory or hostile species, to attack in any way..particularly as an edible food source.
From an evolutionary & biology standpoint, that's master-class level stuff..and all of it, fully self contained in just one species.
They're sounding more & more like an Alien-engineered, bio-weapons experiment..with every single passing point made about them, when you really think about it..
As old as earth is..not a single one of our insect species has evolved to that degree..not a single one..even in billions of years, left quintessentially alone to do it.
There's a hell of a lot more to them, and their amazing xeno-biology, than first meets the eye!
Still one of the best antagonists ever conceived, anywhere, as far as I'm concerned.
Our own gov't would be every bit as quick as the 'company' to consider a few crew on commercial tug, or a team of Marine grunts, and a hand-picked officer, as Gorman clearly was, pre-mission deployment, by Burke.
      Cameron, Winston & Giger really knocked it way out of the park with this..I gotta admit, it kinda irks me when I try to talk to folks about their Xeno-biology..even lots of 'fans'..only to hear folks say;
"Geez, I never really thought about any of that biology or evolutionary stuff..they were just big, kinda creepy-scary bugs to me really.."
And I'm like: Sigh.."How the fuck can you possibly NOT"!?
      But, sigh..I digress.
      Fair winds!

With what Ripley knew of their original plot (the first movie) - AND the fact that she messed up their alien recovery - she needed top be silenced. Sending her along to be impregnated via Burke's mission would kill both birds - silencing Ripley _and_ getting a couple of specimens back. THAT'S why they sent her. Not even the Marines were aware of the company's big plan. At least that's my read.

Great reaction. Glad you loved the movie. As other people have already said, Hicks is played by Michael Biehn who played Kyle Reece in the first Terminator (the FATHER of John Connor). There are other actors in this movie who were also in Terminator and other James Cameron films. Vasquez (the female, badass soldier) is the same actress who was in the SECOND Terminator film who played the young John Connor's foster mom. She was the one who got taken over by the transforming Terminator - and "she" stabbed her sword arm into her husband's face to kill him. The actress looks nothing like Vasquez - her transformation is amazing. She should have gotten props for how jacked she got for the T2 movie. Bishop (the android), played by Lance Henriksen was also in the FIRST Terminator movie. He played one of the main cops (mostly in the police station) who was trying to track the murderer of all the Sarah Connors. Hudson (the scared, funny one, played by the late, great Bill Paxton) was ALSO in Terminator - but if you blink you missed him. He plays one of the punks who tries to stand up to the naked Arnold Schwarzenneger at the beginning of the movie. There are more connections, I'm sure - Sigourney Weaver (Ripley) also played one of the main scientists in the first Avatar film.

Ripley's daughter, Amanda Ripley, who is still looking for answers about her mother who disappeared along with the ship a decade or so prior joins the team sent by weyalnd-yutani corporation to the station to retrieve the flight-recorder. Unfortunately there's trouble aboard the station... An unknown organism is terrorizing the place and everyone seems to have disappeared....
In regards to your question about why they didn't wear masks. 1: They are stupid and are not listening to the person they specifically brought for advice. 2: A mask wouldn't make a difference. Remember in the first movie, Kane was wearing a spacesuit and the facehugger just melted through his mask and attached to his face. You could argue that the suit wasn't a durable material but I would beg to differ, its designed for walking around in hostile environments and resisting the elements so its got to be pretty tough stuff.
