  • Sir Keir Starmer has held his first cabinet meeting as prime minister - and his first news conference.
He began by hitting out at the "mess" he said his ministers had been left with by the former Conservative government, highlighting a prison service that was "broken".
He also confirmed the controversial Rwanda migration scheme was dead and buried.

Regarding migration, it was Labour who opened the flood gates under Tony Blair.

At around 40k of imagination a year in the 90's to the Conservatives 700k + a year. I would say it was the Conservatives that opened the floodgates, Labour merely turned the tap on! 😅 ironically it was the Conservatives that ''rubbed our noses in imagination'' more so than this quote from Blair! Labour would have to work extremely hard to be as bad and out do their predecessors!

Oh good, I look forward to Labour spending ten years blaming the Tories for creating a "mess", even as the Conservatives did policies very similar to those supported by Labour. The Conservatives also accused Labour of "crashing the car" and leaving a "mess" after the global financial crisis in 2008, even after they had proposed measures that would have been, if anything, even worse than those implemented by Labour (essentially, a blank cheque to the bankers who were the ones who had actually crashed the car).
The Conservatives will no doubt succeed Labour after ten years when the "mess" argument has run its course, and they will again blame Labour for leaving a "mess".
The problem is that neither of them offer anything remotely different to the other. The result of this is apathy, distrust in politics, and low turnout. This was only slightly reversed during the Corbyn years, where the parties were actually offering different things to voters. Other than that it has been a trend for at least the last 30 years.
The only thing that can combat this trend is proper democracy, fair and proportional representation, a political class that treats voters and our views with respect instead of contempt (even when they personally do not agree), elections where there are clear choices, and an end to safe seats, the uniparty, the duopoly, and the end of the current way of doing things.
This election is a wake up call to our entire political class, it needs to change things now, or expect serious and furious revolt.

It’s not really a Tory mess, it’s the mess that Labour started in 97. Priorities are really simple:
    1. Stop illegal migration completely
    2. Fix prisons/build more
    3. Privatise NHS.
    4. Reinvest in coal, oil and gas to ensure energy independence and security of supply.
    5. Cut tax to stimulate growth.
    It’s pretty easy really.
