I usually keep humidity up by keeping the floor wet. Just empty a bucket every couple of hours, works like a charm. Just ignore the floor changing colours to a nice black, it's nature

I like plant chores, so all the tricks and shortcuts to help one avoid having to water too much, having to repot, having to dust off leaves, I don’t get it. Some people consider them work, I guess, they are the types that just want the plant to sit there and look good - but to me, all the work that goes into caring for plants is part of the fun.

I usually fertilize my plants with the blood of my enemies. Works wonders! And it's quite cheap as well! All the good nutrients for my plant friends.

I started to use water conditioner when I saw your video on it and I have to say, THANK YOU! My Spider plant is nearly 23 years old and while it's healthy I always had brown tips and it drove me nuts. Now, I'm not seeing any brown tips and it looks greener and healthier than ever! I use the conditioned water on all my plants now, but specifically wanted to try it for Spidey, I am so SO happy it worked!

I personally once a month during the full moon make a salt circle on the floor. I take all the plants out of their pots put them in the center, then blindfolded while going around the circle whithershins I grab a plant and stuff it in the nearest pot while talking to it.
When I'm done I look at where they ended up and that's why my plants are never bored. It creates alot of air circulation for the roots which is very important for plants to remain healthy
I did see the new thread of hanging the plants upside down in the kitchen.
All things come back in style, I've been hanging my mookshood, henbane, rue and the odd chicken that way since 1692 but I must say, it dries them out somewhat.

I got an aquarium conditioner too, but I'm afraid to use it because it says it has minerals. Are they the right minerals for the plants? I got Sera Aquatan
@@slavbarbieI'd contact the brand to be certain. I lost near my entire plant collection to the minerals in the cat litter I used as a soil amendment. The box said "100% organic non clumping cat litter". Apparently that included an organic saline solution. I contacted the brand after my plants died, and only found out there was salt in the litter!
I have bought a water conditioner that is safe to use for aquarium plants.
Water conditioner has helped mine too. They look like they've been on holiday.

Eggshells contain tonnes of calcium, which there is already too much of in the tap water. Most plants don't like too much calcium.

Thank you for the video. To be honest when I saw the thumbnail with those yellow bits in the soil, I immediately thought "No, please don't put diced mango or pineapple in the soil and claim that they'll release nutrients into the soil over time 😂

Hi Mr. Sheffield. I only have a few planty channels, maybe 10, and YOU are one of them! Mostly because I'm and old lady and I find you somewhat cute and amusing 😅. Recently I installed a rain barrel and my plants are so happy! I would highly recommend it. It cost around 100 US dollars, which I thought was quite reasonable. I don't know how much that water conditioner costs, but I will bet it wouldn't take long before regular use adds up to way more than the cost of my barrel.

Misting isn't a miracle cure, but they (the plants) don't exactly hate it either. And it can remove some dust and keep mites away. But, some plants can develop mold on the leaves if you mist often, and the climate isn't hot enough. So there's that. I prefer to give them a proper shower in ... well, the shower, once in a while. And keep them dry in between.

🤔going to have to give the fish tank conditioner a try. Stress conditioner, safestart plus, Water Conditioner, Quick Start...oh my...just so many available. And I have them just sitting around since I don't use them anymore for 55 gal cichlid tank.

I only mist my plants when they have new leafs that are stuck unfurling. Moisture seems to work well for that. As for the rinsing. I like using a solution of water and a few drops of dish soap in a spraybottle. Spray the leafs, let it sit for a minute or so and then shawshank redemption them in the shower. 😂

I figured out the chlorine thing a while back. My Colathea White Fusion hated being watered with water from the hose outside our house. Even was a little finicky about the water conditioner water. I do take a jug of conditioner water and let it sit out. Definitely helped. Hopefully we have just regular chlorine in our water. ✌🏻♥️

I must have good tap water because i never had any leaf turn brown or crispy using that (i tried both with conditioner and without, and didn't see a difference) on my poinsettia, basil plant, oregano, monstera deliciosa, and other non tropical plants.
From what i heard, the chlorine can harm the soil's ecosystem but generally it recovers completely in 2 days or so.
The only use for a conditioner i think is for sensitive tropical plants (aka drama queens) who are apparently allergic to fluoride and chlorine, the others seem to be fine without it. That's my experience anyways.

Re: chlorine or chloramine, you should be able to look up on the website of your city's water supply (here in the US, anyway) to find out which they use. I have an aquarium and wanted to know how much water conditioner I needed to use there (because the dose is double for chloramine). And yeah ...Denver uses chloramine. :)

Can confirm that Calgary still uses chlorine with no plans to switch.
BUT: it may take longer than a few hours for the chlorine to evaporate??
I recently heard Vitamin C powder should neutralise it, so am thinking of trying that...🤔
@@iloveprivacy8167 the water conditioner I use is called Dechlor, it's only 1 drop per gallon for chlorine and 2 for chloramine, so it lasts a really long time and ergo is inexpensive, it may be cheaper than vitamin C!

The mayonnaise one has been around for a long time! I remember my mother doing it to her FLF and Shefflera back in the early ‘80s because she heard it would make your leaves shiny and pretty. I can’t remember if it affected the plants negatively in the long run.

With egg shells wouldn't it be better to bake them for 20 mins first, or in winter put on baking tray ontop of woodburner? I do this for my chickens (for added calcium) it kills off nasties and can easily be crushed by hand.

I only watch 5 plant tubers & you’re right up there 😊 I was having a problem with my Alocasias drying out too soon & losing leaves. The darn things don’t like to dry out at all! So, I top dressed them with pebbles & now they can go longer without watering than my other plants.

They could even sponsor a video with you. We can’t all afford Mother grow lights & these vertical lights from Amazon do nothing. My plants are suffering because I don’t have the coverage I need with the Sansi lights.
About the Chlorine in our tap water, there's 2 different types now - the old basic Chlorine gas which will evaporate when left to breath and the newer type called Chloramine, this latter one is a combo of Chlorine gas and liquid Ammonia, it doesn't evaporate in the same way so we need to check online what we are getting in our own areas

The sponge thing: I tried to add some pieces of Pafcal into the mix before and it did wonders to ROT MY ROOTS.
But pafcal by itself is a pretty good medium.

@@SheffieldMadePlants pretty interesting stuff. Pafcal is developed by Toyota Suntory Corporation. It’s a sponge like material made to resemble peat soil. It’s supposed to balance water retention and also allows for aeration.
I came across it when I bought a couple of plants from Muji. All of them grew very well, with my spider plant sprouting out these spider plantlets like crazy (but perhaps it’s super root bound).
Anyways, I don’t want to write an essay but short story is I got some pafcal and they come in either little pieces or a pot form. I tried to mix it in w some regular soil but failed. But by itself some of my propagations are growing pretty well in it so far.

My goodness, 75 percent humidity is so high. Even with humidifiers, I can only get mine to 50 percent, unless I open windows during a rainstorm.

I’ve got a couple of small glass greenhouses that are on top of heat mats. I use them to increase the temperature and humidity for water propagations and baby plants. It seems to make a huge difference.
But once a plant gets bigger, it needs to adapt to my environment. I live in a cold temperate climate. Most people struggle to not have mould growing inside during winter. I’m not adding a humidifier to my home to create mould problems.

@@SheffieldMadePlants I’m in the Blue Mountains (the mountain range west of Sydney). My local climate is wetter and colder because of the elevation. There are lots of native ferns in the upper mountains. It’s considered cold by Australian standards/compared to Sydney.

What also helps in a dry season and/or climate is using cocopeat aka coir fibre or coconut fibre, for your plants. Three advantages
1 it stays moist for a long time.
2 when it dried up, it absorbs the water you give immediately
3 your hands stay clean using it, it’s easy to remove.
4 plants are repotted easier.
5 it’s more environmental friendly, no need to use real peat
I use it for years, it’s really superior.
Of course I use hydro culture in smaller pots, and for house plants.
And also for drainage in larger pots, you can leave a bottom of water in the pot. Just make a whole in the pot, so a surplus of water can escape. After some time the roots wil reach the hydro pebbles, and you have no problem at all with water anymore.
Eggshells don’t decompose easy. In my composter they came out the same way they went in after a year.

Where I used to live I had beautiful spider plants, Boston ferns fig, it was hot water heating both places and when I moved here, it was the cursed electric baseboard heaters.
The first two winters I lost all my big floor plants spider plants ferns ....😢 I tried everything but didn't realize the only solution was a humidifier.
I only realized that when my canary sounded like Darth Vader and the vet told me to raise the heat to about 80 and bump up the humidity while giving him antibiotics. He thrived and so did my plants .....but my goodness was that ever a soggy winter ❄️ and the next winter 🥶 same thing, but he lived to 14 years which is pretty much their lifespan. I still miss him.

Honnestly do not devaluate yourself. I don't remember which video of you, but I think I saw you talking about aphids. You said that when we have aphids indoor, there is no need to toss the plant out. I saw that advice 4 days after I tossed one of my plants (I wanted to toss it anyway so its ok) but the others 2 (peppers) also got aphids a bit later (probably the same ones). I would have tossed them too, but after some intense waterboarding for 2 days, aphids gave up, and i'm pretty sure you save them, because i would definitly had thrown them away.

Adding things like milk, mayo, banana peels or any food except maybe clean egg shells, Everything else will draw insects or even stink after a while!

1:33 too bad I managed to find the channel in 8 seconds after watching the video. It was simple & fast. No lawsuit would've come your way, even if you had told us the name. I personally don't think that adding sponges is the worst idea, but like you said, this would spell disaster for a lot of plants that want dry soil, especially those that must thrive in well-draining and less moisture retainng soil.

Tank water makes the difference to my house plants especially my spider plants. I also use tank water for my young lemon trees, although their not doing so good in pots. Hair is good in a compost bin, we could pick up hair from our hair dressers. Would dyed hair work the same as natural coloured hair ? Thank you, l love you videos.

Great video! Everyone in my plant group always recommends milk or mayonnaise to clean their leaves. I always felt that it would be bad for the plant. Plus, won't it it eventually smell and attract insects?

Episcias are the one houseplant that does need 400% humidity. They're absolute nightmares. I have to keep mine in a closed jar or else they freak out. I don't even know why I bother with them.
