  • As I do with each van I build, a cardboard mock up is essential in understanding the proportions and daily flow through your live aboard van. I'm not talking about some bogus supermarket boxes cut and taped to the walls! A tight detailed to-the-inch cardboard mock up allows you to experience your floor plan in three dimensions, an actual walk through. Here is the beginning of such a build. How many people got super nerded out excited when George showed that swing away armoir in the shower and the other side - the pantry? Wow. I'd like to know by now how many of the "large" RV manufacturers are messaging our man George for ideas and engineering. Amazing.

It’s incredible! Brilliant design. If it wasn’t obvious that it opened you could also have secret storage for valuables at the back of one of the units that swing out. Left open could the armoire also double as a cab divider? I’ve been looking at vans where they have the cab closed off for security, privacy and insulation but there’s also a door so that you can access the cab from inside the van. One van I saw had the cab divided but the sliding door opened enough to allow for the front passenger seat to swivel.

That armour/panty system idea is gold. I've seen the toilet slide out before and is also such a great idea for making space where and when needed.

At the beginning, watching you mock up the galley cab my first thought was come on George, you're just stretching posts out now.
I was wrong and ashamed I doubted you.
By the time you got to illustrating the swing of the armoir, I was enthralled. When you mounted the mock frame, I was captivated by your genius.
I'm not a fan of big tall shower boxes in a small van, still am not, but you've made all that otherwise wasted vertical space extremely functional. You should standardize the unit and file for a patent. Seriously, you could sell pre-fab modular kits, or at least license the design to others. Passive income. Options.
As usual, your videography skills are top-notch. Loved the overlay exiting & re-entering to get screws. I notice, we notice, the art George, as well as the skill.

I had to re-watch (and by watch I meant savor) this video and even pause! My leftie brain is tickled pink. 🤓 Master G, this build will raise the bar on conversions, and many shall copy that shower swing closet! I was humbly thinking that waterproof oiled sail canvas might just work for the closet. I plan to have one of the outlets of my diesel heater come out low in my shower room, and a fan, and a window so that might help spare the squeege? 🤔 Thank you again for sharing your generous genius in these well-edited videos. Once you swing out the pantry and wardrobe from the shower, with a few additions, I think you could use the swing out portions to increase the size of the shower. You could also add a swing down tabletop on a side of the wardrobe which could be accessed from the living area. In a similar fashion, a tabletop on the side of the pantry could be accessed when the pantry is swung out. If you used the swing outs to make a bigger shower, then it would be a decent sized bathroom so you would not need to slide out the toilet or use it in the living space, just swing out the two sides of the big bathroom.

NOOOO! Don't end it there... keep going! I absolutely love your swing-out closet / shower idea. I need something like that. Pull out microwave oven -- OPTIMAL for van life. DO NOT put a microwave down low, you are constantly bending over to look and see when your food is done. And some foods have to be watched when cooking (like oatmeal, cup of soup, etc.) So putting a microwave at a level where you can see the food is really necessary -- if you use a microwave all the time, which I do. (Mine is currently ON THE FLOOR under the seat, and yes, I have to get down on my knees and bend over to cook. Not optimal, but it fits so perfect under my seats, that's where it sits for now.) Isn't that water heater under the bed going to heat the bed up? Could the water heater be insulated so it doesn't give off heat inside?

    • @HumbleRoad
      @HumbleRoad  Před 3 lety

The water heater is so efficient at holding the heat inside that it does not radiate too much. Although I did send the Vagabonds a custom insulation blanket for theirs. The closed loop glycol reservoir without any insulation is waaaay hot!

George is not ONLY doing a "Van Build"... He and his son are "Building a BRAND NAME" in the process ... (and, I'm sure, causing the competition to do some serious "head scratching" as well) .... LOL

Kreg ACS, nice! I had to retrofit my Makita 300cm track (had to cut it to 63") and cordless plunge saw because Kreg was out of stock of the saw nationwide. It works as good though.

Loving that shower storage idea. 2 of my must-haves are a shower and wardrobe for hanging clothes with no wasted space. Most definitely implementing this design in my build

The shower is a must have for me, as well as a nice toilet. The wardrobe for hanging clothes kept getting smaller and smaller as I rolled through van life!

OMG !!!!!! THIS BUILD IS UNBELIEVABLE !! I am honestly stunned by your ingenuity and unbelievable work ethic ! You are a bloody genius ! Why most come to Australia and show us how to do this build on a van out here. Love to see you ! How much is this build going to cost these absolutely luckiest people in the universe ? Can’t wait to see all the ones I have missed so I can catch up with you ! Truly a sensational effort by you ~~ miracle man !!! Always wanted a van but health and other circumstances have plagued me for so long now, I fear I have left my run too late. Come see Australia, build a van to go round here and sell the van to me on your return !!! Great idea ! All the best, cheers to you, Alison xoxox

Great to hear the systems on the Vagabond Van are doing well. Reassuring to know all that systems planning was worth it "-). Really creative bathroom space--taking the Revel foundation and just, well, exploding its potential! Thanks for posting an update, really helpful and fun to see.

Cool!! Love the width of storage under the bed. Plenty of room for toys!! I’ve been looking at ways to have a convertible shower that hides away at counter height. But think it would be too much of a hassle to convert on an almost daily basis. Your use of the shower stall looks great!! I am a bit suspect of the retractable door but they sure are popular. Thanks for another well thought out floor plan!!

Very ingenious use of the wasted space in the shower. Great tease about the maxxair fan. Should bring a lot of people back. 😎
