  • Today in the shop we take a well loved and used axe sheath, and with a few pieces of leather and a new snap, restore it to its former glory. If you want to see our video creating a new knife sheath for my wife’s bushcraft knife, and dive a little deeper into some of the details of leather work, check it out here. • Making a Leather Knife...

Very nice. My dad just asked me to make a replacement sheath for the hatchet he has had since he was a Cub Scott. This looks like what he described. Thanks for the great video.

I struggle with decisions on restoring axe sheaths that are starting to fall apart. I love how you addressed this and have something similar I'd like to try out now.

You should be proud of the work you do. I have worked leather for almost 50 years you did good in
my view. As for all your other work on knives and axes your program is my favorite to watch. God bless you and your family and keep up the good work.

I am about 30 mins away from Collinsville, Ct where they made these axes. The factory is now a pretty cool antique shop.
My grandfather gave me a beautiful Hudson Bay style Collins axe.

That sheath ended up looking gorgeous!! I will say, if you haven't replaced them yet, you really, REALLY need a new pair or to sharpen those scissors!!!! LOL It's also a good idea not to use a steel hammer on your snap punches, or any other punches etc., either use a mild steel hammer or one of those hard rubber mallet's so you don't damage the top of your tools. Great project and thanks for sharing. I really didn't think that pouch could be saved, but you managed it 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Nice job it looks good, but I think if you continued the stitch on the flap around the snap would have a more finishes look.

Good job. Most leather workers use rubber cement. That's a lot of effort and it still has damage. I think it might have been time to make a new sheath.

Agreed -- I'd'a just made a new one, but the lesson that you can restore an old classic is also valuable. Some things are more legendary when the original is preserved and restored.

Off topic: Is the hammer face on an axe and hatchet supposed to be flat or convex? I want to know as I am going to restore my Plumb #3 axe and rehandle it for the first time and want to know if I should make the hammer face flat. It is a one bit.

The Art of Craftsmanship do you make rings? If so i have a cool idea. You could make a ring from a metal nut by sanding the inside.
