“Fear, stress”: Toronto residents pen letter to city over homeless encampment

- Residents of a downtown Toronto neighbourhood are calling on the municipal government to take action when it comes to a homeless encampment located in their community.
The group, comprised of more than a dozen local businesses and residences, has penned a letter to Mayor Olivia Chow and other officials. It raises a number of significant safety concerns.
It’s part of a growing number of concerns being raised by communities across the country about homeless encampments, which spurred the federal housing advocate to issue a report on Tuesday, calling for a plan to end homelessness and an end to forced evictions from the encampments.
“Residents are experiencing fear, stress and anxiety from this encampment,” the letter reads in part. Residents say they have witnessed a number of incidents over the past several months alone, including an alleged physical assault on a female employee from a nearby business.
Global’s Shallima Maharaj has the details.

Stop putting up condos that no one wants to live in, and build affordable housing units for the unhoused. I don't like seeing parks like this, but there's a reason why people are choosing to live there as opposed to warm indoor shelters.
High real estate costs and government meddling made affordable housing non-viable.
Who's no one?
Welcome to Trudeau's and Singh's Canada 😏
Yeah, but Poilievre has nothing to say about crazy immigration either. All politicians want more population to raise unemployment, lower wages and create an illusion of higher GDP (thanks to overpopulation). Lower standard of living for the rest of us who were born here.

I've lived next to public parks for 25 years. Up until last year it was always just park noise, kids squealing and playing, basketballs being dribbled etc. Now I'm listening to tent dwellers fighting, garbage piling up daily, and kids are not playing in the playground anymore. If I were a parent I wouldn't take them there either. This is especially egregious given the 10% increase in property tax. I'm at the end of my rope and am thinking of leaving the city for the first time in my life. Public spaces are exactly that. Once someone lives in it it's not public any longer.
Wow, back in the '90s, we had lots of young people camping and cleaning car windows all over Toronto. It took the government six months to clear the streets. Why are they trying to make people dependent now? It’s puzzling.
Tell your local and provincal politicians to mandate affordable housing, and increase rent amounts for OW recipients.
After that maybe we can think about ways to stop the opiod epidemic, but housing first!(it worked in Europe)

IF HOMES AND APARTEMENTS WERE NEVER USED FOR PROFIT NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED
There are so many empty spaces that have been vacant for years that should be turned into encampments or started as cheap homes
followed by the sections and subsections of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and relevant Canadian laws:
Revised Response:
Legal protections for homeless encampments on city property vary by jurisdiction. Commonly, homeless individuals may have rights until April 1st to due process, including notice requirements and access to emergency shelter, before any forced removal from the encampment.
Sections and Subsections of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Relevant Canadian Laws:
1. **Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms**:
- **Section 7**: Right to life, liberty, and security of the person.
- **Section 8**: Protection against unreasonable search and seizure.
- **Section 9**: Protection against arbitrary detention or imprisonment.
- **Section 15**: Equality rights, prohibiting discrimination based on various grounds.
2. **Relevant Canadian Laws**:
- **Residential Tenancies Acts**: Provide guidelines for evictions and tenant rights.
- **Homelessness Partnering Strategy**: A federal program addressing homelessness and offering support services.
- **Local Bylaws and Regulations**: Each city may have its own bylaws governing homeless encampments and property use.
These legal provisions and frameworks aim to protect the rights and freedoms of homeless individuals, ensuring fair treatment and opportunities for recourse in cases of eviction or removal from encampments on city property.
To be fair, the homeless can't win. None of these people would ever say the guy say in the red tent causes no trouble. To get rid of a resident takes hard evidence & just cause.
