Hailing from a tiny farming community in western Pennsylvania, his conversion was as a teenager in Akron, Ohio. While on his way home from work at a tire company, he overheard a street preacher say: "If you don't know how to be saved... just call on God." Upon returning home, he climbed into the attic and heeded the preachers advice.
In 1919, five years after his conversion, and without formal theological training, Tozer accepted an offer to pastor his first church. This began 44 years of ministry, associated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA), a Protestant evangelical denomination; 33 of those years were served as a pastor in a number of churches. His first pastorate was in a small storefront church in Nutter Fort, West Virginia. Tozer also served as pastor for 30 years at Southside Alliance Church, in Chicago (1928 to 1959), and the final years of his life were spent as pastor of Avenue Road Church, in Toronto, Canada. In observing contemporary Christian living, he felt that the church was on a dangerous course toward compromising with "worldly" concerns.
In 1950, Tozer received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Wheaton College. It was May 1950, when Tozer was elected editor of the Alliance Weekly magazine, now called, Alliance Life, the official publication of the C&MA. From his first editorial, dated June 3, 1950, he wrote, "It will cost something to walk slow in the parade of the ages, while excited men of time rush about confusing motion with progress. But it will pay in the long run and the true Christian is not much interested in anything short of that." In 1952, he received an LL.D. degree from Houghton College.
Among the more than 40 books that he authored, at least two are regarded as Christian classics: The Pursuit of God and The Knowledge of the Holy. His books impress on the reader the possibility and necessity for a deeper relationship with God.
Living a simple and non-materialistic lifestyle, he and his wife, Ada Cecelia Pfautz, never owned a car, preferring bus and train travel. Even after becoming a well-known Christian author, Tozer signed away much of his royalties to those who were in need.
Tozer had seven children, six boys and one girl. He was buried in Ellet Cemetery, Akron, Ohio, with a simple epitaph marking his grave: "A. W. Tozer - A Man of God."
Prayer was of vital personal importance for Tozer. "His preaching as well as his writings were but extensions of his prayer life," comments his biographer, James L. Snyder, in the book, In Pursuit of God: The Life Of A.W. Tozer. "He had the ability to make his listeners face themselves in the light of what God was saying to them," writes Snyder.

I'm not sure why God has given me the gift of faith. I tried to run from His will like Jonah. I deserve Hell more than most people probably. If God is calling you, trust in Him. He will equip you.

Jacob, that is me! God is showing truth, I see everything for what it truly is, because of God. But I'm so undeserving it's ridiculous! I still have sin in my life that I desperately want to shed, yet it seems I can't, but, God is almost chasing me down!
Jonah ran because he knew God is rich in mercy and will abundantly pardon but he wanted Nineveh to be destroyed.
Thank god I have a roof over my head. Thank God we can use CZcams to listen to sermons from of old. Thank god I can have a meal every day and that the evil of this world is still not overcoming me completely. While we can curse and complainm and grumble, there is so much for me to be thankful to God for. Maybe the world would be a better place if we all thanked God a bit more.

keep reading the word. i know how appealing occult can be, esp for someone who is curious about everything like myself, believing white and dark magic are different, but God showed me they're two branches of the same tree whose roots are from hell. it's clear as day now, but for a time it wasn't, and a lot of strange things happened because of it. God bless you. I keep learning from the bible everyday and see how the world does everything opposite to God's commandments.

God called me by name and led me to Jesus Christ. I felt His Grace and Mercy pour on me, I felt the Holy Spirit descend upon me and fill me. I was given Faith, it truly is a gift from God. I am learning to do the Will of the Father. I pray He finish his work in me as I learn to surrender and let His Holy Spirit lead. May God save all His Children. May God have Mercy on Us All. Amen

I'm compromised. Now after thirty two years of marriage and the children grown, I have just learned that my husband is an unbeliever. I am so very sad that I didn't understand this lie sooner. He has turned my sons against me because of their upbringing. I was always the bad guy because I was the only involved parent. I want to leave I don't know what to do. I need prayers. Amen Jesus is Lord.
Talk to God. Ask the Lord to help you in prayer and read the scriptures. Trust Him and let Him heal your hurts, pain and He will pour in His oil and lead you through. Please just be honest with Him, tell Him everything that you are thinking in your heart because He is seeking always to deal with our innermost heart. Many hide the things and seek excuses for all sorts of things they do but we must open our hearts to Him and He will do the necessary work inside so that we can walk on with Him with no hindrances to His fulfilling His promises to us. Be encouraged by His grace and trust Him with all that has happened.
All who seek Him shall find.

I miss the days when sermons were held like normal talks and not like motivational speeches where everybody screams at you and makes up a show just to be remembered and be cool :(
My husband and I have the same problem in L.A. There is no lack of churches...we have four within walking distance. For the present, we have Bible study at home with our family and pray that we will be connected with other believers. We don't want to just 'warm a pew' in a building; we want to be where the Lord Himself would have us to be.
Same here me, wife, 3 kids, worship, read, pray at home, the church age is passing away ....
@@stormcup2920 I actually attend church now for about two years, but I go alone; my husband does not go with me. My eldest son got saved and wanted to go to church so he prayed and found one. I attended a few social events with him and got to know some folks. After a time I realized that I needed the community of saints. This simple Christian church is sound in main doctrine (although there are a few peripheral doctrines I don't agree on but nothing to separate over), they do not teach heresy, the elders seem to be saved men, and they endeavor to teach the whole counsel of God, i.e., they teach verse-by-verse with occasional topical sermons as the need arises. It has been a great spiritual blessing to me and I really do love them in the Lord.
However, the spiritual altar in the home (as it used to be called) cannot be replaced. It is vital to live AT HOME what one would live while at church gatherings. What you are doing with your wife and children is very important. God richly bless you and your family and give you abundant grace and mercy for these times we live in.
@@alzorama Hi, yes we where sunday church going people, went for years, but always felt that is not where I fit. I have been in great churches in my life but here where we are, the are either lukewarm or hyper tradition. Then for a few weeks we didn't go and no one missed us. I bought a slab of chocolate, sat the kids around the table and said. 'Right any one who gives comments on the verses we are reading, gets a piece'. Great biblical discussion with my own family instantly. I play the guitar and are teaching the kids how to play and properly worship not just singing..I am proficient in a few languages so I take the time to teaching them the scriptures in hebrew and greek, just for fun.

We are not involved in dialogue, we are involved in declaration. WOW, couldn't have said it better myself.
I was an addict also. I lost my job, went into bankruptcy, got my car stolen, stopped taking anti-depressant drugs. All around the same few month period. Then I just about died in April from a bleeding Ulcer.
I was looking searching for a truth to live by and went from positive thought philosophies like Eckhart Trolle etc.. to A course in Miracles then back to Jesus again. I was a passionate Christian 10 years ago and slowly drifted from him, and was completely blind again in about 3 years. I really rebelled against him last year in April because my plans and ideas were not working so, started smoking' crack again. I was really blinded and cursed from that day forward, and was completely exposed to the wiles of Satan. Lost everything and close to bleeding to death internally. I have bouts of depression. But I am always trying to be in his presence and his is blessing me again. I fear the Lord he is God and all I do now is wit on his voice to tell me what to do each day. I am has servant. All things wok together for god, if you are called. His rod and staff comfort me.If you are predestined you my go through Jonah and King David experience's. But I look back on what has happened to me and he had to Crush me out to make room for him. Be patient he is doing his will if you are called. I am 59 yrs old, never to late, my motto is NEVER AGAIN.
I know its been 3 months since you posted this but Im wondering have you encountered finding out that some of life is just meant to be bad so that you can make comparisons to the path of righteous and the path of destruction thats about all Ive ended up finding in life .when I was younger I maybe thought that life should hand me a dramatic experience but well dwelling in the dull regular life turned out to not be so bad .their are days with plenty of excitement now and then but I can see somewhat better how Paul the apostle meant he was really happy come what may .after all its God who orders our steps and He knows what He is doing so we should be able to be happy .but happy is certainly never promised anywhere in His word .servantry to the Lord is though and thats much better than happy . thanx for sharing your experience and have a Blessed Day .

great sermon! it's been 50 yeats since God regenerated me & i remember it like it was yesterday.
In four days time it will be thirty nine years ago that God opened my eyes to what Jesus accomplished for me, after about three and a half weeks of running around like a headless chicken after the Holy Spirit convicted me of sin.
The day I read of His suffering in Isaiah 53, it was raining, it was a miserable day, but the best day I had ever experienced, to know that He had forgiven me.
“...that you were counted worthy to suffer for the LORD’s sake.”

I thank God for the clear division between his perfect righteousness and this fallen world. I Thank God for showing me how very wicked my heart truly is and giving me a new one. The difference is far more than I could have ever realized without the gift of his Holy Spirit. And I mostly thank God for saving me from myself & this evil world.
Ah! narrow is that path to Jesus.
Thank God the Lord delivered me from drugs and alcohol many years ago through much trial and error. Having said this, I still have to keep a close and tight fence up around me to defend my total abstinence. Life is still tough some times but His Grace and Peace is always a comfort.
May the Holy Spirit guide you and help you 💕

I was just asking God about this last night. I know many Christians that don’t seem to comprehend God’s commandments. They act as though they are somehow exempt from God’s design for ALL humans. Personally, I have a very healthy fear of my Divine Maker. I don’t want to ever displease Him ever again. I am doing everything humanly possible to live in repentance, obedience and trust. Less of me and way more of Him. 🙏🏼

@@k.w.7973 I can't speak for everyone else but I am christian because I know what Jesus did for me. No one else died for me or my sins, much less rose from the dead. Of course no one should want to go to hell... people think it isn't real just as they think God and Jesus aren't real... they're in for a very rude awakening though they are real. Christianity isn't about just being worried about going to hell though, its your personal relationship with God and his son and the Holy Ghost that count. Rather you accept Jesus as your personal savior that is what matters.
@@k.w.7973 that's not true. Pains me you think that way. Many would still love and serve Jesus for realizing the true love he showed us, by sacrificing himself for us. It's literally no difference than us and our human father (or parents). We should have a healthy fear/respect for them, but ultimately love them and be obedient bc we realize we wouldn't be here if not for them.

50 years ago I was converted after great preparation by God... After my first year at Bible college a man gave me a book written by AW Tozer on the Baptism of The Holy Ghost.. I read it on my knees. I don't speak in other languages or have any higher octane running through me But what he wrote in that still is working in me... A very faithful man .. Thanks be to God.
The Holy Spirit tells us everything we need to change about ourselves when we’re Reborn in the Spirit of God but sometimes people don’t wanna hear it. They have other projects that are way more important. The Bible is a two edged sword ⚔️ when you read it, it reads you.
A lifetime of 55 years believing in God The Father and His Son The Living Christ and I am now just recently learning of Him, The Holy Spirit. I was never taught nor told. Please forgive Me The Holy Spirit, I long to feel Your touch and hear Your Word.

You're either saved or not...not in between. Because you struggle with sin in the flesh doesn't make you an unbeliever. We ALL have sin , but what separates us from the world is we have entrusted Jesus as our savior and atoner for sin, his blood was the atonement! When we believe on that we are saved , grace and peace. We await our blessed hope as Paul exhorted

One way to fight temptation is to hate sin all sins especially your own sins.
WHERE?! I am in NC and I have no problem finding the carnal, socialized churches that promote rainbow teas, hat competitions, and other meaningless functions that people in "church" attend. I am hungry for real prayer meetings and serious study of the word but there is no where for me to find this. The last attempt I ended up at a church where the pastor preached about how many cars she owned. I was so blown away that I couldn't even get up to leave. I am praying to be lead to the right one.

@American Refugee ...so true. There is nothing in media, politics and education that drives us towards the awareness of our sinful nature and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. These things are a gift of The Holy Spirit by the Grace of God to those whom He has set apart from the beginning.
I have read most of his books and loved them. Now I have discovered his teaching in his own voice, I am so blessed by his ministry.
The Spirit of truth that most cannot receive. The four seeds parable comes to mind. Solid teaching though! Many are called, few are chosen. My sheep hear my voice and they follow.
Thank you, I finally get it! It is so hard to be saved and live among really nice and lovely unsaved people. I will pray for them but the revealing of Christ in our hearts belongs to the Lord.

Should I share my experience with the Holy Spirit, I believe nobody would believe me, the works of the Holy Spirit are awesome and true, I will say that one day, the Holy Spirit instructed me to go to my daughter's home and sit there because I was going to have a heart attack, who am I to question the most high two days later I had an operation, My journey began at age five, at sixty two the comforter is still working in me, call upon the spirit believe that Jesus Christ is Lord and you'll be saved🕊️

I am so blessed I have had knowledge of the Holy Spirit faith in God since I can remember being a small child. I never question the Lord's existence I only rebelled yes the Lord never forsaken me I see that now Praise Jesus.

My entire problem has been to live in this world and not be affected by it. The inner agony becomes quite heavy to endure.

Only the Father chooses who and sends them to the Son Jesus Christ. Not ALL can recieve the Holy Spirit if not sent and drawn by God. This is so True because there is something Father God sees in His children..I'm blessed and forever grateful and thankful to be chosen and called by our Father to Jesus. Amen

Nice people goes to hell cause they will go to college to get to save themselves on earth. But wont pick up the only book of instruction to get into heaven. THE BIBLE. Amen. Use it w webster n others verion to get the true meaning. May God draw u near to him n his spirit. Call out to Jesus Christ to save u for dying for u to hear n have forever life in heaven
Through my Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ, I praise and give thanks to our Father in Heaven who has sent the Holy Spirit to prepare us to receive and then to reveal these truths to us. Without the work of the Holy Spirit within us truth would merely be knowledge without understanding. Glory to God in the highest & peace to His people on earth.

I Grieved Him and ran......did worst.....I WANT BACK AND NOT INTO WORLD.....I never fought.... Took Him for granted... And drifted into immorality and world. . I WANT out ....I FEEL SICK WPRST SINS.....keep playing with depression and suicidal thought .NEVER ARMOR.....

We must come out from among them and be separate. I believe, after much contemplation, prayer and research, that we were and are being directed to come out from among "Churchians," that are so convinced that God is defined by experiences and so called "movements," rather than by His Word. Too many have exchanged the authority of God for the authority of merchandisers and entertainers. We have evicted God from His own house and excuse it under the guise of Supernatural Spiritualism. Repent.

Gosh years ago it was preached n we lost it until now. Holy Spirit is giving this revelation to many preachers n people of the faith n PTL to many many youth who will go tell n have his power to do the works of Holy Ghost again This is his time keeping.
