- The Porteous Riots are a part of Scottish history that inadvertently gave the name to one of the Edinburgh football teams. Scottish history tour guide, Bruce Fummey, tells the story where it happened in Edinburgh's Grassmarket at Royal Mile

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

There's a vennel next to Armstrong' in the Grass Market, on the left wall there's a plaque that mentions the lynching of a policeman on that spot.
Was that Porteous Bruce.
Like your style big man. Keep going with the history. For an expat fae Paisley now in Oregon.
The quality of this channel is astounding
Larry it sure is buddy.
My "favorite" (if you can call it that) part of all the riot was the fact that the rioters broke into a small shop on the West Bow on the way to the Grassmarket to get the rope. They left the money for it on the shop counter for the keeper.
Money for old rope ?
English dude here. With no affiliation to Scotland whatsoever. Recently spent 10 days in the highlands and they were some of the most stunning places I have ever seen. I learned a little of the clearances and found your channel upon my return. I am now more addicted to Scottish history than that of the usual English history I cover on my channel. Fascinating and brilliantly presented.
I am now going to listen to a little story,...
You forgot to mention what a great golfer John Porteous was. First record of the game was Porteous. Courtesy of Find A Grave - "In 1724, John played golf against the Hon. Alexander Elphinstone in a 'A solemn match of golf' that was recorded as became the first match to be reported in a newspaper."
As a boy, I used to deliver the beer to the pubs in Grassmarket. It was a great place then winos on every corner LOL.
Followed Hearts since 1956 but this video is great information. You have a great delivery. Thank you.
I have watched this again so I could take more in. It’s enjoyable to watch over and over because of your skill of telling a story.
Another great tour Bruce! Thanks for the story. ❤️🇺🇲🏴
I cannot say how much I agree with you, and how much you teach me. Thank you!
You are so welcome
So informative and as a Hearts fan through and through it was a breath of fresh air to hear detailed history in this way. You have garnered a new fan sir. Respect.
Had a fair few sherbet's in the Last Drop, when I've been up there.Great vid Bruce.

Same here aye. And never walk on it either. Bad juju
Same… but I was told because witches had been hung there and it was to stop them from possessing you…and you DEFINITELY don’t walk over it.
Fantastic video. I spent some time in Edinburgh and ended up with a fondness for the Jambos. Loving hearing the history of the club
Lived here all my days, and didnae ken any of this story!
Amazing stuff, man 🤘🏻
Love this channel you're so easy to listen to
God knows why I subscribed to this channel.
So that’s two of us who know.

Superb vid. Please keep making them.
Could watch Bruce all day long great channel . 👍🏻🏴
Another great history story Bruce. Loved your ending, you have a way of pointing out the conflict in our human nature. Pole Tax! Just pull out my "One year on and not paying" button. 😉
I just have to say, I love this channel! You've revived in me a dormant love of history!
Wow, thank you!
Well done as always Bruce
And another interesting wee bit of Scottish history that's fascinating as well.
Another great presentation thanks Freind .

Just caught onto this channel from a recommendation. You're a helluva story teller indeed. Got me engaged from the off. Nice work indeed, sir. Looking forward to digesting your back catalogue. 👌
Awesome, thank you!
I wish I had known this when I was there. Wow! Thank you, Bruce.
Thanks for another great story!
Very intetrsting.I enjoyed that.Best wishes from England.:)
Glad you enjoyed it
Was good to meet you Sir, glad you got your video finished :)
Aye, with a wee bit disturbance, but hopefully we got away with it
*Love* this story - time it was a big film with Scottish actors playing all the Scottish parts. Same with Jinty Geddes' story about throwing that stool a century and a half earlier, sparking another Edinburgh riot. Actually, Bruce, can you cover her story as well at some point? It's a really fascinating story too.
Let's dream big here - maybe get your people to talk to their people: Brian Cox, Robert Carlyle, James McAvoy, Ewan McGregor, Ken Stott, Peter Capaldi Siobhan Redmond- all the usual suspects would be great in a film of The Porteous Riots. Casting the lead in Jinty Geddes - Karen Gillan would make a cracking Geddes. There you go - two big that films projects that will keep you out of trouble for a while ;-)
PS: I can do an angry wummin in the crowd rioter in both, no problem, lol!
Scotland and the UK have paid ever since.....Thatcher!
Another fine broadcast.
Thank you, Bruce.
Another great video 👌🏻
Aha I started watching your vids 3 months ago and I’m a huge Hearts fan from Aberdeen so this was brilliant

...and yet, three victories at general elections. In a parliamentary democracy you get the government that people vote for. If a lot of people don't bother to vote then they can't complain about the results.
@@johnfinister5011 FPTP has a big influence in who gets into power. It was helped by the SDLP split from Labour who combined would have had more votes than the Conservatives. In a proportional representation voting system the two former parties could have formed a coalition government instead.
@@johnfinister5011 aye the government the south of england vote for not who the majority of the so called uk
@mandellorian Not really a fan of this loose badly completely narrative. Even in countries with PR there are different factions in national parties. Sure it is more concentrated under FPTP, and some realignment will take place as voting reflects the peoples choice more close, giving smaller parties more seats. However national organisation and name recognition will probably keep them as large players.
@mandellorian The SNP are in favour of a better PR system, and already do very well under a partial PR system in Scottish elections - so not sure what your point is?
I stay in websterland on the Grassmarket wish I had seen you to say hello. Awesome
Love your channel, keep it up
Thanks, will do!
mr fummey u taught me at tcsoa im so glad to see youre doing well lmao love the videos
Thanks for the football history lesson regarding the 'Jam tarts'
Being a proper cockney and working on the rigs out of Aberdeen from early 80's to 2004 i took plenty of stick from the offshore lads but one mate was a 'Jam Tart' and fanatical with it...i've followed Scottish history ever since i first came over the border and have always loved your passion north of the border

BRILLIANT STUFF BRUCE AUGUST FOR FREEEDOMMMM 🏴🏴 👌👌 TAKE CARE BROTHER 🤘🤘
I didn’t explain myself well. My point was that Walter Scott's story came first. The dance hall's name came from that

Hi Scotland History tours . As a member of the clan Porteous can i say on here that we pronounce our name Port Chus . Its funny Ryan Porteous Hibs i have heard one commentator get it correct . Easily done , Keep these great videos coming !
We had a chemistry teacher called Porteous back in the day and he insisted you pronounced his name "Portchus."
@@tomwillis3089 Thanks Tom . Its seriously annoying , everyone gets it wrong lol
Love this story x
Mate, you should do a video on the story of Maggie Dickson's pub that is on the Grassmarket. Really interesting.
As a Wiganer now living in Scotland, you're spot on :)
Last drop - through the trapdoor... 🙏🏴👍
Hearts was my team growing up in 'Auld reekie'. Still get a paper with news and sport results from there now and then.
Another fine day in history class! And a bit of civics, ethics, and Thatcher, too.
Your fine tales (my use of "yarns" has become verboten) always send me off to the Great Wiki to learn more, this time to discover that there's such a thing as "Porteus Associates"! And that they planted a plaque 11 years ago where Captain Jock P. got his comuppance sans trial. Another fine video, and Thank You!
Oh there was a trial
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Yes, of course, my bad - I had meant the appeal process trial.
There's a really good, and much more detailed account of the events in a book called "Famous Edinburgh Crimes" by Ross MacDonald first published in 1953 Oliver & Boyd, later editions by Lang Syne publishers
Never heard of "Thatcher the Milk Snatcher" before :D Hailing from the Yorkshire coalfields as I do, anything which slurs her memory is fine by me.
🤣
Thatchers best action was kicking the bucket.
Hello from your NZ cousin , I have Scottish ancestry this is somewhat my history too ,that's so cool .keep up the good work I really like your presentation , hahaha I can see where part of NZers cheaky bastard culture comes from
Haha kiwi i agree, another with awee foot inside these staunch people to say.
My grandmother's father played for the Hibs , he also played for Celtic . He was called the "Duke"
Mon the Cabbage!! 💚🤍👊
Brilliant! Yet another event of which I knew nothing. I do remember school milk though, always served at room temperature and smelling like it was off. I can't say I knew at the time that it was abolished by BOO HISS herself, but the young child me was rather glad it went. Now if only she'd abolished black bits in the mashed potato and slugs in the cabbage too!
Margaret Thatcher was the education secretary in England, Scotland has a separate education system and wasn't affected by her decision to stop free milk in schools. Since 1707 Scotland has had a separate church, legal system and education system from England.
@@stephenturner6075 Your absolutely right though as Charles M says it might have been better if she did. Didnt stop us calling her Thatcher thatcher milk snatcher though
@@coinneachreid8971 👍
@@coinneachreid8971 Down here she did stop the school milk I can remember it happening when I was first starting school we used to have milk. I think our American cousins forget that some things within popular culture on this island tend to mess together even though parts of the jurisdictions are separate. That was prime minister over the whole country though so she left a mark on Scotland as well as down here in England.
@@alistairjamesheaton9155 Yeah but to go back to CM's original comment its mad that nobody within the Scottish Comprehensive school system in the late 70s early 80s thought fridges for the milk might be a good idea .
Can’t believe Netflix hasn’t given this man a show yet
Ah ken eh😳
Great as usual. Although the spinner woman singing at 8:30 was a bit distracting, could barely hear her but she crowded out your voice for a few seconds.
It was less distrpacting than the street performer I had to wait to finish, trust me. It's Edinburgh in August. There are no quiet spaceps

Just started uni, and my first assignment is to read extracts of heart of Midlothian, I feel I may have to buy this book,
Seems like it's on your reading list
Some fitba historians say Hearts took their name from the Heart of Midlothian dance hall which was in the Dumpiedykes area near the foot of the High Street.
Aye I've heard that. Where did the name come fae?
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Dear knows. Mibbe ask a Jambo?
I've read the fitba club was named after the Heart of Midlothian dance hall where 2 of the original players frequented.
Has Edinburgh ever actually been in Midlothian? At times gone by Edinburgh has been in Edinburghshire and (the short-lived) Lothian Region.
They play football in Edinburgh.
You learn something new everyday.
I thought it was all rugby, polo and cricket.
Och naw, polo and cricket wur fur the posh boys doon south. Rugby, aye! We've got Murrayfield fur that. Fitbaw, we got Hearts and Hibs. The set up wis originally cause the sectarianism of protestants and Catholics in the city. A wee bit like Rangers and Celtic of Glasgow, but aw'fu less knuckledragging...
Liam Burge Cricket was pretty big in Scotland...1830s. Grange cricket club down Stockbridge.Still plenty clubs in Edinburgh and Scotland.
Rugby was certainly the posh boys sport back when it was introduced up here.
Still is pretty bloody middle class these days.
Polo was certainly played too. Scotland also won the elephant polo World Cup in 2005 and 2006! Haha
Jam Tarts, best team in the world, best badge, best ground for atmosphere, best fans 👍
Thanks for that unbiased opinion.

5.30 there is something historical going on the background Bruce ?
And people here in Wales we would agree with you too
Hoodie suits u well. Love the tong in cheek style of story telling. Especially Robin Hood stories.
Heard to spit on the heart there, brings luck? :)
Brilliant as ever, lived in Edinburgh for eight years and never knew why I spat on the HOM (it wasnt because I was a Tim, got a lot of time for the Jambos, you should do an episode on "McCrae's battalion") but what happened to Andrew Wilson did he get away ?
No, he was hung. I read the book about McCrae's battalion with the intention of covering it. I've just not got round to it
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Shame that would have been just. It's actually quite suprising how many violent riots have taken place in Edinburgh's history
I had no idea about any of this, great story! MON THE JAMBOS!
i'm here because my last name is Portieous, and i googled myself like a megalomanic ....and this showed up!
Maybe i should have watched it before i told everyone how i'm a Portieous! lol he was horrible!!! yikes!
What is that Gaelic phrase at the end of your videos?
"There is hope upon me, that there's a good day at you". (I hope you have a good day.)
No relation 🤣 As a Porteous it's nice to see you talking about the riot.
When we get independence we should put up a statue to Mrs T.
Wouldn't happen without her.
And Glasgow needs somewhere to spit.
The present incumbent is doing pretty well at that job. Perhaps we could have a statue of the both of them, one of them ...no, not an idea to be pursued.
Sorry Bruce, you're a wee bit off there. The Jambos name came directly from a dance hall named The Heart of Midlothian Quadrille Assembly club. People went there to dance every week, some of the men bought a football and began playing the game at The Meadows. They named the team after the dance club. Whether the dance club was named after Watty Scott's book, or the Heart at the tollbooth, I'm unsure, but the fooball club was directly named for the dance club.
Still really enjoy your videos Bruce 😍 'Mon The Hearts !!
I'll be honest the story of the riot was the important thing to me but, whether there was a dace hall in between, Scott's novel is where the name came from
Why am i only get alerts for this 7 hours after it was put up? I live in Scotland for god sakes.you would think i would get it the same time he puts it out.
That's above my pay grade, but makes me curious too
I was always told it was good luck to spit on the Heart
What does that say on your jumper in English?
Oh how I have missed Edinburgh.
Great city
Not a clear explanation of how the 'events' gave the Football team their name. Sure the name of 'Hearts / Heart of Midlothian' might have been taken from these events but how? just by some selection, by a local team who changed their name, a new team that took the name ?, how - that small but important section is missing.
Great stuff Bruce ... from the same period, have you come across anything on the Hanging of Thomas Green? 17th century fake news, show trial (conducted in Latin and Doric) and political scapegoating that certainly didn't show the Edinburgh mob in such a good light! Risky thread to pull on though ... feeling up to that 20 part series on Darien?
Aye, a nasty affair
Bruce never mentioned Wales in his list of places who hate Margret Snatcher as she is known down here he wont be popular lol Great video
Nor London and it's riots.
