Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

My "favorite" (if you can call it that) part of all the riot was the fact that the rioters broke into a small shop on the West Bow on the way to the Grassmarket to get the rope. They left the money for it on the shop counter for the keeper.

*Love* this story - time it was a big film with Scottish actors playing all the Scottish parts. Same with Jinty Geddes' story about throwing that stool a century and a half earlier, sparking another Edinburgh riot. Actually, Bruce, can you cover her story as well at some point? It's a really fascinating story too.
Let's dream big here - maybe get your people to talk to their people: Brian Cox, Robert Carlyle, James McAvoy, Ewan McGregor, Ken Stott, Peter Capaldi Siobhan Redmond- all the usual suspects would be great in a film of The Porteous Riots. Casting the lead in Jinty Geddes - Karen Gillan would make a cracking Geddes. There you go - two big that films projects that will keep you out of trouble for a while ;-)
PS: I can do an angry wummin in the crowd rioter in both, no problem, lol!

Och naw, polo and cricket wur fur the posh boys doon south. Rugby, aye! We've got Murrayfield fur that. Fitbaw, we got Hearts and Hibs. The set up wis originally cause the sectarianism of protestants and Catholics in the city. A wee bit like Rangers and Celtic of Glasgow, but aw'fu less knuckledragging...

Liam Burge Cricket was pretty big in Scotland...1830s. Grange cricket club down Stockbridge.Still plenty clubs in Edinburgh and Scotland.
Rugby was certainly the posh boys sport back when it was introduced up here.
Still is pretty bloody middle class these days.
Polo was certainly played too. Scotland also won the elephant polo World Cup in 2005 and 2006! Haha

Brilliant as ever, lived in Edinburgh for eight years and never knew why I spat on the HOM (it wasnt because I was a Tim, got a lot of time for the Jambos, you should do an episode on "McCrae's battalion") but what happened to Andrew Wilson did he get away ?

Sorry Bruce, you're a wee bit off there. The Jambos name came directly from a dance hall named The Heart of Midlothian Quadrille Assembly club. People went there to dance every week, some of the men bought a football and began playing the game at The Meadows. They named the team after the dance club. Whether the dance club was named after Watty Scott's book, or the Heart at the tollbooth, I'm unsure, but the fooball club was directly named for the dance club.
Still really enjoy your videos Bruce 😍 'Mon The Hearts !!

I'll be honest the story of the riot was the important thing to me but, whether there was a dace hall in between, Scott's novel is where the name came from

Not a clear explanation of how the 'events' gave the Football team their name. Sure the name of 'Hearts / Heart of Midlothian' might have been taken from these events but how? just by some selection, by a local team who changed their name, a new team that took the name ?, how - that small but important section is missing.

Great stuff Bruce ... from the same period, have you come across anything on the Hanging of Thomas Green? 17th century fake news, show trial (conducted in Latin and Doric) and political scapegoating that certainly didn't show the Edinburgh mob in such a good light! Risky thread to pull on though ... feeling up to that 20 part series on Darien?
