    Hi Joel. As a former truck driver that used the M25 a lot, I have to inform you that with lane 1 on the M25 being used like an on off ramp, often within only a couple of miles, in my opinion it is much safer to stay in lane 2 at a constant speed, especially in a truck....also when it is quiet as you stated. I now live in Canada and still drive for a living, and have 35+ years of trucking experience. Great challenge, please try a diesel jag next time, that will blow you away lol.

    I know what you mean about lane discipline. I was hoping smart motorways meant they would be equipped with retractable metal spikes which would impale lane hoggers and throw them and their cars off the motorway as soon as they were detected. The designers missed out on this big time sadly.

  • @Mikeb1001
    @Mikeb1001 Před rokem +1

    In reality you’ve done that with around a gallon to 2 gallons spare - if the car is still reading range you’ve usually got 30 miles surplus there, more if you’re hypermiling. An interesting end point on these would be to finish it at a garage and note exactly how much it took to fill the car back up to illustrate what was left

    Joel, over here in the Land of the Free we just go. We don’t worry so much about lane discipline, except for if someone is in the fastest lane and doesn’t give way to a faster car from behind. Even then I just get over and pass them. No one really gets that upset about it anymore.

    Goes to show that driving style is a major factor with regard to fuel mileage.
    Gentle application of the throttle and moderate cruising speed can easily get you 25% further.
    Added bonus: it's way less tiring and it limits wear on tires, engine, brakes.
    Time gained when driving faster is usually insignificant.

    Had an S-Type a few years ago but was the 2.7TDV6 engine (Land Rover I believe). Pulled like a train and got decent MPG but that was as good as it got. The car had every problem you could think of, mainly electrical, with invoices totalling £1000s by previous owners for repairs.
    I had a smell of exhaust fumes coming into the car and taking it to 2 seperate garages, was told it was likely the manifold, and the engine would need to be removed in order to repair/investigate. Spoke to Jaguar and although they couldnt tell me without investigating, were charging £150p/h at that time. I also had problems with the Ebrake, digital display, boot opening & brakes, overheating and losing power. Only had it for about 4 months before getting rid of it. Put me off Jags very quickly.

    I bought a 2004 2.5L V6 S Type last summer, for the princely sum of £1000. i guess I'd have preferred the 3.0L, but the 2.5 is still pretty nippy if you use the kick-down/J-gate. Its a very tidy car, all things considered, (black with tan/beige interior).
    Took the S-type up to Scotland for a week's long holiday. Did over 1000 miles without any issues, apart from the cruise control refusing to work. The gearbox seems to have a slight 'lolloping cowboy', (pulsing revs), until it's fully warmed up, but it settles down after 10-15 mins. Fuel economy is reasonable - I get 27-28 mpg driving it normally, with occasional bursts of acceleration. The main thing is that it's a pleasure to drive. It's such a fine cruiser, I'm not even bothered about going that fast in it!
