  • It's not uncommon to hear concept artists, illustrators, or animators talk about creative burnout or art block, but this is a very real problem for fine artists and realist painters. So why do painters suffer from creative burnout, and what can we do about it?

This video REALLY spoke to me. I have been in a serious slump in my painting for quite a while now, even to the point of my questioning whether to continue. I’ve lost the joy in it, and - although I’ve had a certain degree of satisfaction and success with my painting - the gap between what I can do and what I want to do never seems to narrow. And the effort to grow sometimes seems to require that I cast aside much of what I’ve previously learned through long effort. Chelsea, your video addressed all of this and more. There’s no doubt that I’ll watch it again and again. Thank you!

Wow Chelsea. I really needed to hear this. I think your advice about painting at or beneath your median skill level is spot on and so easy to forget. I know for me I'm constantly trying to get better but being hyper focussed on that can really make you feel terrible all the time (speaking from personal experience). There's NOTHING wrong with doing something thats simple, especially since the concept of simple is relative. What's simple to you might be a masterpiece to someone else. I think ultimately the goal of art isn't exclusively technical virtuosity, but rather some form of expression. Thanks for sharing this beautiful insight.

This was the perfect video for me right now. I managed to do a lot of study work over the last 2 months, reading and practicing dense anatomy, and doing daily plein air paintings to keep brushwork and motivation up. In addition to forcing in some portrait practice because i feel i'm so bad at capturing likenesses. But over the last few days my motivations had been starting to falter, and i realize now it's partially because i hadnt done anything anywhere close to my comfort zone, or close to making the kind of paintings i actually want to make since maybe late may. I need to spend a week or so not worrying about improving and just enjoy painting and drawing. Thank you for reminding me of that.

Many thanks Chelsea ... I've been painting now for only 4 years, so no burnout yet; I've even managed to cope with the impact of this wretched pandemic. However, I am both challenged by and enjoying your fluency with "loose" painting. I'm a zoologist who took up filmmaking 45 years ago as a means of reaching a larger volume of interested people. Learning to draw in scientific detail was part of this entire process, so hanging loose with a brush is something new to me. However, your clarity of thought and your demonstrations are really helping me to minimise rigid outlines in my newfound adventure into art.Growing older with a paintbrush is definitely the way to go.

Aw thank you Kelsey! That art community makes a huge difference and I hope you find it. :) I'm sure there will be lots of great artists you can grow close to there, and online groups are amazing too -- I have my students, but I also have a group of painters whose work is similar to mine and who are about the same age. Almost none of us are in the same location, but we get a ton out of hanging out together on Discord.

Sometimes when I'm in a rut I can do very low hanging fruits like you said, for example I can gesso some boards or I can tint some canvas boards to prep for that next painting. I also had a teacher who had us do 2, 5, 10, and 15 minute timed sketches and you could only sketch on that sheet of paper for that long and nothing longer. It's quick, it's a low stakes process, but it gets you to just put something down and the move on, which can be really great.

I do the same! Cut new panels/more linen for panels. Build a cpl picture frames, tone or lead prime canvases, etc...all things related to painting, just not painting. Then usually, by the time I'm done, I get an exciting idea 😀 I've been doing portrait after portrait here lately, cuz frankly I struggle with humans in paintings, and was starting to question my progress, then last night I came back to a still life, and was very impressed with how good it came out...and said, "well maybe I AM making progress after all" ohhh I can't wait until my next landscape(my strong suit) idk why my architecture/landscape types come so easy, but human faces REALLY slow me down. At least getting a true likeness.

"We need to make things that are fun to make, and fun to look at, that make us feel like our skills are enough, right now, as they are. So we aren't constantly definingo ourselves by all the goals we want to hit that we haven't yet achieved."
I really needed to hear this!!! I am a graduating senior art major this year, I'm 22, and even though I've been praised for my work, won an award at school, etc... I still end up crying because I compare myself to established professional artists and I don't feel good enough.
Funny enough, part of my problem is that I agonize so much over improving that I don't feel joyful in my practice, and then find it hard to work consistently. I end up doing my favorite work when I'm able to let go of the stress and have fun making something I find beautiful.

I find I paint my best when I've managed to imagine , clearly , the piece . And the one thing that aids me is to put a beautiful , 19th century , ornate frame up and stare at it. Even while watching tv , I'll glance at it and usually a painting will arrive. If it stirs me enough , I'll trust a beginning. Using the frame as I create , as an aid. A reminder.

Lovely painting! I am returning to painting after 2 yrs away due to life and Covid limitations. I’m jumping back in with Alain Picard’s 30 in 30 challenge. Just having fun with no pressure to sell and new opportunities to experiment. I also tried gessoing a stunningly expensive sketchbook with heavy pages and doing oil studies at Mount Rainier National Park- very fun couldn’t worry about selling, easy to do in a car or anyplace (before Covid). An artist painting a marine plein air piece (can’t remember his name!) in a video said a great thing to put perfectionism into perspective- he said “ the great thing about plein air painting is it’s another day, another painting” 😀😄

Just wanted to share that getting back to art on my granddaughters level and painting with her and like her removes me from the pressure of a perfect piece. Kids just don’t worry about it. They’re in the moment for the moment, they go wild with colours and to top it all usually end up with awesome art!

Part of that is hopefully I can paint when I can't ride anymore. The last few years I have mostly just done commissions, which I groan now when I get another. oh I get this! For me I have 3-4 projects on the go at once. 1 is my main study (at current Baurge plates), this is my main drive. 2-3 fun oil paintings. I'm working hard on getting my knowledge and skill up. The dry times help me switching this around. 4th is just a fun peace of no thought. This week it was practising my pencil sphere shading in my note book. I found that the smaller projects can be done on small watercolour pads that I just quickly size and gesso up. When I get board of one I just focus on another. I also have a series of miniature models that I have fun "3d" painting - working out creating light and studying colour schemes etc etc.
I have ADHD and autism so I'm mentally .... retarded ... so this helps me start keep moving forward and spending hours a day studying without feel like I'm getting bogged down ;-)

I totally hear this. First of all, you definitely don't want to beat yourself up for it. It's simply a function of how you're working right now, and it improves with time and practice. I find that I'm least likely to blend paint when I'm just really confident that what I'm putting down on the canvas is correct. So lay down a stroke, then move onto the next area. Then, once the entire canvas is covered I look for where a stroke needs to go next, so I am not thinking of it as blending, simply adding information. :) I know that's a very oversimplified explanation, but when in doubt try to just put 1 stroke down and move on, and go easy on yourself.

Bob Ross didn't like to paint
    People,he stuck to the
    Stuff that he had,
    inside him,
    That's all he ever did,
    He became
    More relaxed
    And confident

Do you love your edge pro easel?

I do! I use it for all of my small paintings in the studio, and used it a good amount plein air too. I love the magnetic strips for keeping smaller panels mounted up there magnetically (though anything bigger than a 11x14" and I just lock it using the usual clamps). For traveling now though I use the Strada mini, because I can just keep it in my car and leave the Edge in my studio, and the Strada just a bit smaller and easier. But that's the advantage of doing it for a living - I can justify the 4 different easels I have. 😂 I certainly don't need them all though, and for most paintings the Edge is my go to.

That is the problem with realism huh. Painting 75,000 perfect horses does get old. Kinda defeats the point of taking up painting in the first place
