RV-10 Fuselage - 032 - Floor pan, side vents, pull rivets and landing gear strut

    In this video I go through the interior and work on the floorpan and fix any missed rivets. I then attack the floor pan with all the pull rivets... all of them.. soo many pull rivets. But once that's done I get to work on the landing gear support struts.. which isn't fun.. Nope.. Not fun at all.

    Hey Jason, two things regarding your new cradle. To get better access, it looks like you could add a platform, raised to the desired height, on either side.
    Second; when it comes to taking the completed fuselage off of the cradle, remember the cradle is disposable. A couple properly supported bottle jacks could be raised up to support the weight of the fuselage. Then cut away or disassemble the cradle enough to roll it out of the way. Then lower the fuselage down onto the gear.
    It might be worth your time to look at how shipwrights move boats around while they are being built.

    The Harbor Freight pneumatic rivet puller is $36 after the normal 20% off coupon. Folks on VAF have reported building entire RV12s with the cheap HF ones so it should at least last that long. You'll be happy you got it and won't believe you ever thought you should pull blind rivets without it.

    Great progress Jason. I feel your pain on the blind rivets. When I built my Lotus 7 Kit car, there were probably 1000 or more rivets and I pulled them all by hand. Like you, I couldn't justify the cost of a pneumatic or electric rivet puller. Keep up the good work.

    Getting it off: Consider an engine hoist. As you go on, things just get bigger and heavier and a hoist is a handy thing. Plus, you are going to want one to hang the engine... I have the "Big Red 2 ton Engine Hoist" from Tractor Supply (not saying that is the one to get - if nothing else, this is something you buy when it is on sale). Comes in handy lifting lots of odd and ends - I even used it to pull up some unwanted Lilac bushes. :-)

    I just finished the steps and attached the tailcone. Steps go pretty fast, but don't cake on the primer on the round tube part. Also put the steps in the freezer just before final install. I did that on my second one and it was definitely easier. When putting on the tailcone, 1 helper is absolutely necessary. 2 would have made it easier for me.

    I wonder if the challenges with the landing gear assembly at 13:05 could be from moving the wing spar from the shim plate assemblies to the wood mount you made causing ever so slight misalignment of the wing spar assemblies…

    This is going to sound crazy, but I've seen it first hand, more than once. In fact, this past winter, we thought our tooling shop's custom aluminum tool was drilled too small for our steel pilot bushings. But coming into their warm shop from the cold and about 30 mins later, the steel bushings slid in all day with no force.
    Your tight fit could be due to thermal expansion differences from when you match drilled to now. We're not talking anything crazy, just enough to eat into the minimal tolerances you had. Steel and aluminum expand and contract at different rates. If you match drilled it on a relatively cold day, and are installing bolts on a relatively warm day, or vice versa. It can happen, fits can get tighter, especially with different materials.

    I'm sure there is a market for reselling aircraft building tools. On sold between completing builders to new builders. As you can imagine there are tools you use only a few times that are indispensable, and it would be good to buy it used and then resell to the next builder when you complete your aircraft and so on.
    You will have a bunch of tools after this build you will never use or need again.
    I mean, seriously, if mothers can re-purpose baby clothes and so forth of social media groups, I am sure the guys can get a Facebook group up and running for tools. :)

    CS pull rivets are countersunk vs the LP or Low Profile pull rivets.

    Get a pneumatic rivet gun and you will never use a hand riveter again ever. I personally think they do a much better and tighter job of pulling rivets. Keep up the good work.

    a 3/8" crowfoot on the end of a socket extension should be able to get that bolt

    Jason, would it be much easier if you had built a "Rotisserie" Fixture to be able to simply rotate the fuse to the proper orientation to get to these out of the way bolts and rivets, Instead of having to bend over the side of the fuse to get to them and put yourself in awkward positions?

    Jason the rivets that you forgot and went back to install at 10:25 of the video look like the wrong size for the chamfer you have. They are only contacting the bottom of the top sheet. If they are critical I would drill and use a bigger rivet that fills the chamfer and closer to flush with the top sheet.

    On that one bolt that really sucks, I might have a tool that will help you get on it.
    It has a 10mm 12 point wrenching end, I know 10mm is a bit bigger than 3/8, but there may be a way to make it work.

    Get you a 3/8” crows foot for that hard to reach bolt.

    Have you seen the EAA table mod where they do the retractable wheels? Perhaps you could incorporate that on your fuselage stand. This way the stand will sit back at your designed height, but you can have the option of swinging down the wheels for moving around.

      CS in the rivets stands for COUNTER SYNC (they are flush pull rivets)

      HINT: for interior (floor, wiring, flight controls, etc) work --- I found it TREMENDOUSLY helpful to rotate the "cockpit/fuselage" onto its side ---- eliminates the bending and resulting back pain. Others (tech advisors and builders) saw it and said that they wished that they had thought of that.

    Jason, I like your build videos, keep up the good work. My question is, What build table would you use if you could do it all over? Do you have a link to the build table plans?

      I think a standard 4x8' heavy duty plywood table like I have made works fine. Just make sure to make it rigid / stiff so as to avoid any bowing.

    I built a factory 5 cobra kit car a while back. The floors vibrated pretty bad. I’m seriously considering an RV 10. Do they say whether you can use silicone or some kind of foam gasket on final assembly? Or do you or your viewers have an opinion on that idea?

    Jason, would it be easier to place the fuselage on a new platform on a 90 degree position so you can work in those places in a standing position rather than bending and killing your back?

    If you're already going to be modifying tools it may be easier to cut a notch out of a deep socket from the $5 bin at a hardware store. Not sure if that would exactly do it but from the angles in your video it looks like it might.

    Jason I am finishing up the elevator of my RV14 and am about to start building the tail cone. I am debating between normal build kit vs quick build kit for wings and fuselage. What is your thinking on that? Knowing what you know now would you make same decision, i.e. go for normal build kit? Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

      If you enjoy the build for the build sake, go normal. If you want to get the plane done quickly.. get the quick build. I personally no matter what would get the quick build wings. I am enjoying the fuselage but I found the wings kinda tedious.

      Well, it didn't say to.. and I'm not sure if I should have or not.. I opted not to but now I'm second guessing. I can always reopen the floor and add them if I want to down the road.

    I have a question: why not paint the inside with the green corrosion paint? Can You make a video about that topic please? Some builders do it and other builder don’t do it. I Have seen some videos about it and the builder says he will make a video about it, but that video never come.
