"multi-million dollar jet" i bet that describes every single jet currently in existence :D

@Phil Collins so like 1 jet lol
@Phil Collins 3 is like none. Or, like 1. Also if ther are 9, that's is still, like none, at all. That level of casualness about my admitted ignorance and laziness to look into the matter, was all apparent in my original if you look deeper. I said 5 words and 2 take away from the rest, "like", and "lol", the position of the word "lile", negates the specifics numeric value of even a numeral, like 1, coming after it. I'm going on , like, forever, I know.
Omg…”there’s no ground crew, they got bored and left”…LMAO
@Jul Ian 12:07
Can confirm we do this.
Would be cool to have C.W. Lemoine himself talking us thru the DCS tutorials
oh yes please...
@Matteo Rosso as long as hes just dubbing it and not writing the script himself
Yes, some variety from hearing the same voices.
Call it, "Mover ruins the manual". I'd watch.
Wish list haha
Crew Chief: "Sir, what are you doing? What is taking so long?"
Pilot: "Listening to the instructions."
Thanks for sharing enjoyed the comparisons. Its worth noting our training session is an older one and IFA would be used now. The training will be updated in the future. thanks
Oh, there's the answer...
Let's see which mfd page on taxi is in the new tutorial haha. Very interesting to watch these, great input. If we ever get a ground crew running thru hand signals it would be huge step for immersion. The supercarrier adds a lot with its crew on hook up

The startup has been updated since this mission was added to DCS. I believe this mission reflects the older startup procedure that was implemented on initial release of the hornet.
There's a "stored heading" button on the HSI that you press during the INS alignment. Instead of going to NAV after the alignment, the knob is now placed in the IFA position
I did this just the other day and seems to be pretty much the same
and yet they haven't made a new tutorial. In fact they haven't made new tutorials for anything at all despite many changes to modules. They also don't have a single tutorial for the F-15C yet they have multiple for the Russian FC3 aircraft.
"They're will also be an accompanying 'deedle deedle' sound to draw your attention"
Mover: "deedle deedle" 😂
“There is no ground crew. They got bored and left” now THAT cracked me up
"That's what she said" - C.W Lemoine.
Yo Mover, you are correct the INS would go to IFA its just when the F/A-18C in DCS came out it wasn't implemented yet so that is why it wanted you to go to NAV and they have not updated the tutorial
IMO, still should have directed goto IFA from the start - don't remember NAV ever having INS drift when Hornet launched anyway.
They didn't build in INS drift into nav until they finished implementing IFA

I did this tutorial few days ago and wondered how realistic it was after all - now we've got a brand new video about it - thank you, much appreciated that you took the time to evaluate this lesson

Another great vid! Especially enjoy these DCS vs real world type clips. Thanks Mover, very fun to watch.
This Startup video for the hornet was made with the original versions of the jet. With the current revisions the F/A-18c software, IFA has now been implemented.
Thanks for the video... it's good to compare the simulation to the real life process.
You should do a video on the ground crews hand signals, unless you already have.
IFA wasn´t shown here, because the tutorial came with the Hornets early access release in 2018, but full INS Simulation/IFA was released way later.
Yes! Mover you should make a DCS F/A-18 tutorial series! That would be absolutely amazing.
DCS should add crew on the ground to give you hand signals like they have in DCS SUPERCARRIER
Can you please keep making more of these DCs vs IRL vids!?
It's Really interesting! as DCS is the closest non-pilots (like myself) get to military aviation.
Hell, I'm a pilot, but this is a whole different perspective. I've only flown civilian aircraft and the mq-1c Gray eagle drone. I always wanted to be a naval aviator, but back in the '80s my eye sight was too bad. Now I'm too old.

A very rare opportunity to see a side by side comparison thankyou. I think this showcases just how authentic DCS really is when compared to the real counterpart.

I was my shop's final checker for about a year while I was in the Navy (AME on the Prowlers), this brings me back, lol. I remember for a while, I acted like I was a second basemen in the middle of a double play relaying the "throw" from the SB side checker to the plane captain, lol. I also took a couple turns as a PC.
Thanks a lot! That's really nice to make those videos to let us how you really do it.
Great video . Like the real cockpit cut ins.. oh and God bless ground crews everywhere!
Really interesting video. Could definitely do with a LOT more explanation as to acronyms, functions, the what and the why, that type of thing. The intercutting with the real thing was really cool!
The DCS Hornet module was somewhat recently updated and setting INS to IFA is indeed the right thing to do now. I guess the tutorial hasn't been updated yet? Oh also if your mission date is set before GPS was a thing, then you don't do that of course, you just go to NAV like in the old days.
i do believe GPS was around before the F/A-18, the system was classified back in the day and not open to non Military use, later they relaxed a little and allowed civies to use a down graded signal, and later still to the system everyone now enjoys
@@bleeckertb If by "downgraded" signal, you meant there's an unencrypted signal and encrypted signal, this is still the case. Though apparently civvie receiver can, through black magic, still somehow use the encrypted signal to gain some accuracy. If you meant selective availability, well, that hasn't been a thing for like 20 years, because differential GPS made it irrelevant. Coast Guard ran DGPS stations that "unscrambles" GPS signal that was scrambled by Air Force; the whole selective availability thing was literally peak federal government.
Nice to see you back Mover
I know I'm very late to the party; but one tip in case you're planning on doing any more of these: Cntrl + Z speeds up the in-game clock and therefore the tutorial voice-over so you won't die out of boredom :)
With turning the DDI's on after 1 engine start, You can definitely turn all of the on before starting the second engine. I was a engine ground runner and we always did so we could easily see all engine parameters before trying to start the second engine. Never had a power surge.
I believe that this mission was created long before IFA was correctly implemented in the Hornet (I believe it was added sometime in the last 6 months). Wag’s initial videos on startup included the checks, including control surfaces, hook, probe, and anti-skid status. But yeah, it’s incomplete and not a full startup.
Chuck's guide has updated startup procedure, and it adresses the checks Mover mentioned. Also, if the mission date is before the year 1986, you would use NAV mode instead of IFA.
Love how I watch this and have no idea about most of the systems in this cockpit. But I still follow it closely like I’m actually going to remember any of this lol.
Lmaoo lemoines commentary is hilarious. You need helllaaaa patience to go through these trainings.
I'll never forget those cold foggy mornings just before sunrise listening to these birds moaning to life as you struggle to pull yourself together.
I feel the same way. Every time I am in Cold Lake (Canadian Hornet base) and waiting in the viewing area, I get goosebumps when you can start hearing the jets crank. Love it!
The RL and DCS back and forth was really well done
Thank you C.W. It means a lot that you like this Sim. It validates the notion that I've always had, that I could have done this (if I had joined the military, basic, flight school, studying, exams, more studying, performance evaluations, exercise and everything else you did to earn your spot in that seat).
You can do anything, but not everything.
I find this fascinating, comparing DCS to the real procedures. Plus, mover, your unique perspective...😁
Quick tip to remember Mover; you can pause or adjust the sim time rate or even press space in advance while the guy is talking to skip to the next item provided you've completed the item.
I was always fascinated when I ended up working around the Hornet guys with how different the Navy’s procedures for launching a jet is compared to how we did it in the USAF.
Gamer climbs into a real Hornet cockpit ... "Hey! Where's the space bar?!!!" :)
The autostart sequence does go through the extra checks that the tutorial left out, and it completes the entire sequence very quickly (compared to the tutorial length).
Note: this video did not include the 5 down and maintenance final checks portion. Mover mentions them briefly.
As much as I enjoyed learning how to start up a Hornet I also really liked watching the real world training the ground crew (4P's on helmets - one behind mimicking the one in front) were doing communicating with Mover during the video. Totally understandable his annoyance at the lengthy descriptions from the narrator but wonder how many years of training/flying it took him to get in that position ;-)
USN retired here. F/A-18A thru F airframer. Turning the hornet was a blast!
Real cool you took the time to do this vid. Even though its been a while since you strapped in you still have a lot memory still of your time in the seat. When in doubt ask gonky lol
Your right it's IFA for GPS NAV mode. If you check Wags videos he has one on the new procedure for NAV align in the Hornet. There are Kneeboards you can download from DCS, or check the manual for the start up procedures that covers pre Bat check, ENG start and the rest. I think it was the 5 finger check you were referring too (hook, prob, est).
1:32 I miss him, too. Matt "Press Spacebar to continue" Wagner :D
3:55 "Ohl pressure" :)
8:47 I wonder if you have to _hold down_ the friggen thing _for a second_ IRL as well for it to actually ack the cautions and restack the advisories like in DCS...
15:13 Old tutorial, hasn't been reworked yet. IFA wasn't functioning in the DCS module for a long time.
16:14 I'm doing this while the FCS BIT runs and I think Wags also did so on his tutorial video (which basically is where I learnt how to start up the thing). I'm baffled the tutorial mission skips it. Probe, speed brake, hook and launch bar. And later the controls wipe. TBH I usually skip the fire test in the beginning to speed things up.
C.W actually listening to the manual.....This is a 1st.........lol

Probably you would skip the engine fire tests + the checks mover mentioned (hook etc).

Hey Mover, at the time this tutorial was created, ED had not implemented IFA into the Navigation systems on the Hornet which is why he told you to put it into NAV instead of IFA. I believe IFA was implemented about 4 months later.

Mr Mover if you see this comment id like you to know you really inspire me to get into the aviation industry and since i love the hornet and im only 14 i have DCS and try at my best to make each flight as realistic as possible
now for a strange request but could you do the f18 start video in dcs BUT its in a single player world and you show off all the checks just like how you did it in your former hornet days
IFA is only 6 months old in DCS, before that we were limited to INS only (GPS was simulated, but not functional). Now you have to specifically do a GPS alignment to then go IFA.
The Hornet in DCS used to have no IFA and INS alignment simulated . That's why the tutorial is missing it. It came with an update a while ago. Now you can use stored heading alignment and use IFA after that.
You're correct about setting the INS knob to IFA, In DCS, for the INS alignment in the hornet, once you set the INS knob to GRND, you have to immediatley select the stored heading button/ OSB on the Advanced Multipurpose Colour Display and once that's done aligning, you set it to IFA like you were saying, not NAV, otherwise your INS alignment will slowly degrade over time while you're flying, if you select stored heading align and set it to IFA, the alignment will not degrade. Not sure how it works in real life but in DCS this is how it works.
That is not how it works in real life. Never did a stored heading alignment in the Hornet.
@@CWLemoine interesting to know, thanks for the reply and keep up the awesome videos!
Nice video! Really enjoyed seeing the real thing compared to the sim! I never realized how high you sit and how small the actual cockpit is!! Question: What happens on an alert type aircraft where your scrambled to get in the air as soon as possible. Do you still hv to wait 4 minutes for alignment? Think there’d be a quicker way?? Thx again!!
True but also bear in mind he is a big man, pretty much at the top end of the metrics for fitting in the cockpit. I think he once said is he a tad over 6 feet tall.

Cool. Seems fairly detailed despite some of the forgone checks
Nice editing !
Thanks for the video. Very enjoyable and interesting to watch! I still wonder what your opinion is regarding this DCS Hornet vs Real life Hornet, especially avionics (I can imagine real pilots miss the 'seat of the pants'). But a comparison around this time is interesting, especially now considering this dcs module has evolved and should be more fleshed out and closer to real life. The DCS Hornet is planned to go out of early acces this year. Not asking for any classified stuff btw...😉. Anyway, thanks and take care!
I use QUEST 2 and I have some issues seeing the switches during cold start up.
Thanks C.W.
One thing that's kind of annoying for this awesome idea of comparing the tutorials to your real life experience is that a lot of the tutorials are not up to date. That's just the problem with the F/A 18 still being an early access module. Many features have been added/updated while some missions/tutorials just haven't been adjusted accordingly. So expect a few hiccups here and there. Apart from that, as I said, awesome idea! Seeing it side by side with your commentary is really fun, I wonder if they implement correct ground crew functionality outside of the carrier module in the future...
The NAV option is selected due to the fact, that IFA was not implemented yet when this tutorial was created. If I remeber correctly IFA was added last year. As of now this tutorial for the Hornet is outdated. A lot of new functions was added in the last year. Anyway thank you for the compare with the real world. Like that live footage :-) o7
