Sens goalies took a huge step this season. They're the drivers of every other team's offence.

Gem quote.
Oh my God this was so brutal 😭
Slafkovski improving by leaps and bounds since December. He’s finally arrived and continues to improve and impress. His future looks bright. Love your draft order idea. Watching from Thailand
Lucas Raymond is one player to be named. Kid has taken over the red wings since Larkin has been out with an injury. The kid is all around becoming a more lethal player whether that be scoring goals, making nice passes, or forechecking the ops
Agreed
Absolutely!
UPL from the Sabres.
Most improved for sure. I didn’t get all the Hate he got last year. Throw a goalie out there that isn’t playing consistent games and with a team that thought they could out score their non existent defense and just leave Luukkonen out to dry just isn’t right.
But this year the team has finally started to play defense and have actually given him good support. He isn’t a flawless goalie like Miller or Hasek, but I’m rooting for him.
I was a fan of UPL last year and wholeheartedly thought he should’ve been our #1 last year. I’m happy he’s finally getting the recognition and ice time he deserves.
UPL has turned into a top 5 NHL goalie
From the 3rd string goalie for the Sabres to a possible Vezina contender. Definitely agreed
Yet another great one !
Most improved player award would have to go to Juraj Slafkovsky, kid is night and day from his premature end of last season. Plus he keeps growing game after game. Byfield had shown more flashes of briliance already than Juraj last year, had 19 A in 53 games so it's not as massive a jump in overall performance, although he did quite superbly improve his scoring. They'd be neck & neck, truly, along with Peterka and a couple others. But i have to give Juraj the edge. (and a honorable mention to Sean Monahan)
Couldn’t agree more
your takes on question 2 (what would you change if you were Gary) were so on point, im actually frustrated that such changes arent being made
Revenge of the sith, great pick!
“YOU WERE MY BROTHER ANAKIN” goes so.. so so hard
For anyone curious about why people think plus minus is a terrible stat, there are a lot of reasons.
It's largely dependent on how good your team is. Late in games the team that's trailing will take risks. That could be extra pinches for the defense, forwards cheating out of the zone looking for the home run pass, or the riskiest situation which is pulling your goalie. If those are happening at even strength you're going to end up with more minuses than plusses from them but the risk is minimal because losing a game by 2 is the same as losing by 1 (barring a tie breaker situation that I'm pretty sure has never come up). Good players on good teams will be on the end of this where they benefit from this fairly often while good players on bad teams will be on the other end.
It doesn't take into account who makes the mistake. You could come onto the ice for a line change as the goalie allows a goal from a center ice dump, you still get the minus. Alternatively you could get the plus from the same situation. Your teammate can lose their guy while you're still defending yours, you still get the minus.
It arbitrarily picks some situations to count and some to exclude. If you play a lot on the power play it hurts you because you can never get a plus on the power play but every team usually has at least a couple of shorthanded goals per year. If the logic is that it's easier to score on the power play, I'm fairly sure the rate of scoring against an empty net is higher than power play scoring rates so why aren't those excluded?
It would be better if it were a ratio. If two players are -10 but one has 100 minuses and 90 plusses while another had 10 minuses and 0 plusses, those shouldn't be the same rating.
That draft lottery thing is a horrible idea because if a team, like San Jose or Chicago, is eliminated it means they legit cannot win the lottery simply because they are too poor. It will discourage trading at the deadline as well cause if they need to win games after being eliminated, they will want to hang on to their best players at the deadline, not flip them for a large amount of assets. So it will A. prevent bad teams that need the first overall pick from getting it and B. Reduce/Eliminate blockbuster trades because they need to win to even TRY to get the pick in the first place.
For reference, I'm talking about the lottery thing hes talking about at 3:04
I think UPL is one of the most improved players this year
Massively improved. I always like him from last year - I thought he did well…..but now he’s a top 10 NHL goalie and a debatable top 5
slafkovsky needs to be in the conversation for most improved!
If I was commissioner for a day, I would make a rule that play would get whistled dead the second there’s an equipment failure
Revenge of the sith praise is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
Where do you think nhl players/free agents will sign in the off-season?also LOVE the vids keep it up!
Where is Micheal Pezzeta????
Faxxx 😭
Great Video, as usual, Nyq. I'm in complete agreement with you about Plus Minus. I think that it's a valuable Stat, but, as you said, it should be taken with a Grain Of Salt. Keep up the good work with the videos.
It's been years I've been beating the drum for the NHL to introduce the point system used by the IIHF and PWHL. Every game is 3 points and gaining only 2 can be consequential. Can you imagine a team in the last 10 games and hunting for a wild card spot, removing their goalie in the 3rd period's last 2 minutes of a tied game, desperately needing that 3rd point?
NMC and NTC abolished would be a rule I'd change. Obv going back to the 1-8 playoff system and also the LTIR cap circumvention has to be changed
Kurashev and Vlassic
I did not know that about the PWHL. That way of EARNING the first draft pick is so good. If they weren't good all year, they still have something to fight and play for.
If I were Commissioner for a day, one small rule change i'd make is to eliminate the + /- stat on empty net goals. Another small rule change i'd make is PP and PK % would be based on Min, not how many PP chances per game. Often a team may go 0/3 on the PP, but each PP was only 30 sec, or 45 sec long...base it up 2 Min and come up with a mathematical %...that's much more realistic. And yes....please change the Playoff format to 1 - 8 in each conference.
Nyquist is nuts this year
I don't know about other European countries but here in Czech republic 3 point system is the only thing we know. I just makes no sense to "generate" extra point if the game isn't decided in regulation. NHL 2(+1) point system is simply weird for me.
It's the same in other European leagues. Also the same at the IIHF level. The PWHL didn't invent anything.
If I were to make a rule change I would switch start times for all the games for example on a Thursday night when there are 7 games that start at 7 est have at least 2 or 3 of them start at 730 est so they don’t all hit intermission at the same time
This, I hate when there’s 9 games on and EVERY SINGLE GAME is in intermission. Stagger the starts. 5 5:15 5:30 5:45
If I was commissioner Canada wouldn't be banned from winning the cup
Anton Forsberg may not be the best waiver claim but he’s been solid in a position Ottawa has been a revolving door for
The new draft rule would be hilarious to see imagine bad teams going out and getting a decent player at the deadline meant to help their odds at getting a better pick down the road
That plus/minus stat is interesting because people use that as an excuse why Kuch shouldn’t even be in the conversation for the Hart or shouldn’t win it because his plus/minus is bad, when he plays for a very mediocre Tampa team
On the points system- I dont agree with rewarding a team that loses in any capacity...
2 points for a win
1 point for an overtime or shootout win
0 points for a regulation, overtime or shootout loss
If I were commissioner for a day or what not, I’d change the OT time to 10 min with 4v4 and then 3v3 if no one scored in the 4v4. And also change the point totals for the wins-OTloses-regulation loses what you said was perfect for that
I would make it legal to remove your 5 player on the ice and instead run with two goalies at once
Hahaha that would be funny
I'm surprised Slaf wasn't mentioned as one of the most improved players, he's a completely different player from last year!!
Very random, but is the streamer you were talking about that you used to watch Ohtekkers?
can you make a video on the capitals push right now. huge fan and i want to know your opinion
Jake Neighbours and Alexi Toropschenko
I feel like advocating for 1-8 seeding in the playoffs again because of fairness, but also wanting a play in game is a little contradictory. If it's unfair for two top teams to match up in round one, then I think it's also unfair for a 7th ranked team to miss the playoffs because they lost to a 10th ranked team with like a .400 win%. Play ins would be cool if the league were 34 or 36 teams, but with 32, 16 making the playoffs seems perfect imo. And yes I know historically the sport of hockey has always allowed more than 50% of teams in across most leagues
Byfield is king
So the problem with the Golden win rule that the PWHL HAS is it wouldnt work in a league as large as the NHL because a lot of years there are teams "still math in the hunt" in the last couple of weeks so I feel like it would give unfair advantage. I think it would work better if it was a limit to who could qualify. IE the first 6 teams to be math eliminated from the playoffs qualify.
I love these videos, where can I post a question?
Usually on Sundays I make a post on the community tab of my channel, also send out a tweet on X.
THOMAS HARLEY BRO. 4th in goal scoring among defenseman. Last year he scored 0 goals. This year he's 4 short of Cale Makar. Lol year before (his rookie year) 1 goal. Also +18 right now! I'm not even a Dallas fan but man this guy is breaking out!
Revenge of the sith and Karate Kid eh..ah a fellow man of taste I see 🍷
Big Star Wars nerd here
Noah Dobson !
As a Panthers fan, I'd say Reinhart or Stolarz. Reinhart was drafted #2 overall, but the season he's having right now is INSANE. He's expected to get 62 goals this season, but even if he doesn't, if he breaks the 50 or 55 mark, I'm already happy.
And what about Stolarz? I'm EMBARRASSED to say I was a hater. This is also probably his best season. His stats are insane for a backup. Showing how great Bob's influence over him is.
I would have included Bobrovsky here too, but I believe Stolarz is worth more of a shout-out. Bob was a 2-time Vezina.
How about the most disappointing? Tage thompson had to be there. He had 47 goals and 48 assists last year. He has 20 goals and 19 assists this year.
Let’s go!
I agree with the 1 vs 8 playoff format. Do not like the current format
I don't either. If you are a higher seed then you should be rewarded. Teams like Dallas and Colorado and Winnipeg should be rewarded for being solid teams. The fact that at least one of these teams is going home after the first round shouldn't be happening.
I'd get rid of OT / SO point loss
Hiho Nyq, even me watching near all of your videos for roughly 4 years now iam not commenting all that often. Simply cause your knowledge of the NHL is head and shoulders above of mine. But today is the day I have to 🤪.
Iam with you on almost all your rule changing ideas (your answer on griffisjm question, you spoke about ~5 min into the vid) besides one. That’s the play in tournament, half of the league is qualifying for the post season, the other don’t. That to me is the perfect number, from a business standpoint (more games, more involved fanbases, more money= more better) it would make sense, but i don’t like it at all. It would be best of three, at least that’s the way it is over here at Germany in the DEL, therefore it’s way more influenced by luck/ officiating etc as a „normal“ play off round. Imagine your team finished 7th in the conference and one bad call denies your play off run. At the moment Preds would play the Wild in the west, while leading them with 7 points in the standings maybe more when the regular season finished. I just don’t like the idea 🤷🏻♂️
And while iam writing a wall of text anyways, the first thing (actually two things) i would change is salary cap related, at first and most important every lineup hast to fit into it also in the playoffs, i simply won’t get why this isn’t the case already. Second is how contracts hit the cap, aav minus taxes should be the cap hit. Imho. If you’ve got thoughts about this, iam interested 😜
Love your vids, keep rollin‘ and stay safe bro!
If Gustov Forsling keeps playing like this for the next 8 years he'll surely have won a Norris at some point. He has been phenomenal as a more defensive defenseman this year
I'd say he's one of, if not the best D-man right now.
Jeremy Lauzon
Jake Neighbours would be in contention for most improved player imo, already has tripled his points from last season
If I’m Gary I would resign immediately
🇨🇦 do a video of the worst nhl player from each nhl team (all time)
Chris Kunitz has to be the best player ever claimed off waivers though
best record of non-playoff teams in last 30 games (all-star break) determine draft order, not much difference between playoff teams and non playoff teams with a cap that basically promotes parity, bottom 5 teams are there because the system tells them to take that route, no different with ltir with winning teams. last 30 would create a season within a season and a ton of interest. get rid of drawings!
You’re crazy if Anthony Stolarz isn’t on here
Fr. Bro is absolutely INSANE in the net. I went from a hater to an admirer. Dude is stacked up, he looks like he's playing for his life.
Vs = versus = “verses” not Verse
Byfield >
Not giving Bedard the calder because of his +/- overlooks the fact that he plays for the worst team in the league. Nearly every blackhawk is a - because the whole team is outscored most games (literally 3/30 hawks are + this season). On top of that he plays among the most minutes on the team so he's more likely to be on the ice for more goals against than guys on the 4th line for example. On top of that he doesn't kill penalties (where goals against don't affect +/-) so all of those minutes played are in times of the game where his +/- could take a hit if the hawks get scored on. I am a believer that +/- is a team/minutes played stat above all else. Players on good teams tend to have better +/- stats compared to players on bad teams. However, where +/- does have some value is when looking at outliers, which Bedard is not among his first line teammates who are playing similar minutes and therefore does not merit him losing Calder votes.
Absolutely not for play in tourneys lol. Only if the nhl expands to 34
The play in tournament in the nba is a complete joke. People want to reward good teams with the 1-8 format but also want to reward bad teams who aren't able to make it in the top 8. Doesn't make any sense to me.
Slafkovsky
doesnt copp have like 3 years left at 5 mil, thats a big pill to swollow to buy out
how do you get a question abt forsling and how good he’s been and you talk abt bedard instead
St. Louis best waiver claim no?
You gotta apply to be commissioner, w moves haha
OhTerry?
You are dead on in saying that Star Wars ROTS is the best Star Wars movie I’m also a huge Star Wars nerd as well apart of my CZcams channel is about it 😂
raymond will end up being the best player from his draft.
Juraj Slafkovsky would of won that « improved player award » hands down.
Jake Neighbors has caught my attention, ,
Plus minus dosent mean as much as some people mean. If they are a -3 its not that they suck defensively or +3 means they are great. But if they are +40 then give them recognition. -40 give them hate unless ur on Chicago or San Jose.
Yep
Dylan guenther
Didn’t Gary Robert’s get picked up on waivers later in his career and it really works out well……..or am I thinking of somebody else?? Not Gilmore
An in season tournament is the worst idea ever for the NHL. You only play for one thing, the stanley cup.
It’s for a playoff spot, not a title or anything.
If I were commissioner one thing I would do is bump the draft age back a year. One thing the nhl usually lacks is exciting rookies right out of the draft compared to other leagues. Have the draft for 19 year olds so you might see some more rookies get drafted and playing in the NHL right away. And I also think they should try to incorporate an exceptional player status like CHL uses but to the 18 year olds that are the best in the class, like Bedard would be. Maybe have like 10 or 32 exceptional 18 year olds every draft.
Bro forgot maple leafs bruins 😐😐
Best movie ever is Goon. If i was Gary for a day i would end the instigator penalty and change up conference play, adopt something like the nfl schedule. Love ama days
For rule changes, I am absolutely bringing back 1-8 seeding. It's just so much more rewarding for teams that do well during the regular season
I would change the point system to 2-1-0, and bring back ties. 2 pts for a Regulation win, 1 pt for a OTW, 0 pts for a Loss/Tie. I basically would be trying to see teams trying to win games in regulation or do something crazy at the end of OT for a win like what Minnesota did pulling their goalie while also getting rid of rewarding losing and eliminating the loser point. It's really dumb that a team with 15 points from OTLs can make the playoffs
I like the PWHL's system for the first overall pick also
Play in is a horrible money grab. If your not good enough than go home. Its hard enough to win 4 series. There is a balance in all playoff team playing the same anount of series.
NOPE the 1st overall shouldn't be awarded to the team who gets the most points after elimination. It's just stupid to do now because teams that have been competitive for a long time would get shafted (sharks). They never really tanked until now... so punish them for tanking now?? No absolutely not, if this was said 10-15 years ago I would agree but absolutely not at this moment. You only want this rule because the team you like is almost done its rebuild and starting to get competitive..... the reason it's doable in the PWHL is because the league just started and no one gets shafted
Anybody 22 or below should not be considered most improved. That’s just development. Should be anybody older than than that.
I originally thought the PWHL draft format made more sense for the PWHL than the NHL because the difference between winning first overall and losing first overall is only one draft position. However, this would still favor the worst teams in the NHL as the sharks and hawks would already be collecting points while the wild may not collect any at all
Can’t believe you didn’t mention JT Miller in the most improved
ah first
If you were to relocate Arizona
👇
I love your channel but dear lord you have terrible taste in movies.
Haha not the first time I’ve been told this
I know i shouldnt before i watch, but im gonna guess a huge one is the Wings only current player worth a FK- Lucas Raymond. I havent listened to anyone predicting his career trajectory, but i personally think this kid will be well over a pt per game player next year and on
My man knows cinema 🤌 Awesome video!!!
