From what I can see, it appears that we desire existence. So mostly, for oneself and for those we 'love', we desire a happy existence, and for those we hate, we desire a miserable existence or non-existence. Unfortunately, we're not completely in control of what type of existence we will experience. Our existence appears to be dependent upon all sorts of factors that are beyond our perception.
