Restoring an Abandoned Mechanical Keyboard for my Gaming Setup! (IBM Model M)

- In this video I completely restore and bolt mod an abandoned IBM Model M that has been sitting since 1994 in an abandoned mental asylum that was repurposed into a data center in the late 1980s. After 4 months of using this keyboard, I have to say that the hype is real. This really is one of the best feeling keyboards out there and is a joy to type on. Glad I saved it, otherwise it would've either been destroyed when they take the building down or destroyed by vandals.

Also, yes im aware model m uses a membrane to register the keys. Majority of people accept buckling sping keyboards as mechanical.

This feels like one of those videos about nursing an abused pet back to health.
DUDE! this video is my savior :) I had an old IBM Model M in my dads attic piling up dust for who know how long. I later found out that he had worked in IT for 20 years back in the 80's with a guy name Tom Gore. He told me I could have the keyboard and so now I'm here wanting to refurbish this old thing but not knowing how. I decided to search the internet for answers but with no results. So after 3 years I decided to come back to this project and to my surprise, stumbled upon this video. I am currently working on the project and will hopefully get it finished this time. Great video btw keep up the great content!
Nice nice, hope your project goes well 😁
Did you finish?
@@diver3604 Finished the other day! It works like a charm.
Someone ABANDONED a Model M???? SACRILEGE! You have some SERIOUS patience because, if it were me, I'd have sent it off to Unicomp for a complete restoration. LOL
This remonds meof one of those heartbreaking videos where people find a neglected and abused dog who is near death and they nurse it back to health.
I'm glad you gave it a good home. Cheers!

Just imagine. It still works perfectly after that. And this is not even a first-gen IBM model .. (even more sturdy)
you know a keyboard is good that it still feels amazing after being so dirty it was black instead of the original beige.
fastest
i would exclude that girl on the next expedition lmao great job on the keyboard i found an 88 one myself abandoned at work not near as bad as yours considering the last person that used to put it in a plastic bag with the cord nicely put around was missing the top caps for f11 and =+ easy fix from clicky keyboards for replacements been using it for a year as a daily amazing keyboard still plastic rivets and rainbow plate i have super glued the rivets to prevent them from falling out as only 5 have fell out of the bottom wich was an easy fix and i tried doing that exact thing trying to fit a socket into that hole had to order a nut driver myself too hope this keyboard serves you well!
Nice transformation, hope this blows up lol.
This keyboard gives off a retro vibe to your setup, in a good way.
I love this, bro. Good on you for making old shit work again. That's one thing kept out of the landfill and something you can use for gaming. Keep up the good work!
I had so much fun watching this, and seeing how beautifully your project turned out! Thanks for sharing with us!
These keyboards will still be used in the Zombie/Post Apocoliptic future. WHAT BUILD QUALITY! Nice job on the restoration. It's a shame little is made today that anyone will ever want to restore.
I'd restore a wooting
Old time keyboard are best.... fast too and easy-to-use clean
Damn, digging both - the car and the keyboard! Nice video, keep up the great work!
That was soooooo enjoyable and satisfying to watch. Thank you!
Amazing restoration, looks and sounds a lot better!
I also got one from a place in south east new york, I walked into this amphitheater section and saw it and immediately say "oh my god is that an IBM model m keyboard?". My friends looked at me like I was crazy, Still have to restore mine. Looks decently easy to do, Thanks for your help.
Shouldnt be hard. If you need any parts ebay is gokd and also unicomp.com. they sell new membranes there too. Some of the keys dont feel as good or press as good as the originals though
Nice Supra!

Yeah looks like a mk2
@@jordanbalog5792 Sure is ;) I've got an instagram page for it @supramuneeb
I quite like the background noise (neighbours, refrigerator, et cetera), it's nice.
I bolt-modded one of mine. The easy part was drilling the holes -- my grandfather has an excellent workshop, including a drill press. The hard part was my tendency to forget (or even completely lose) springs. I must have taken it completely apart 15 times before I finally got everything right.
Today I bought my Model M. I can't wait for it to arrive!!
your setup is so sick ! Nice sleeper build !
This needs to go viral.
Augh, I've always wanted a Model M! They sound awesome and everything! Nice restoration btw, can't wait for the computer restoration!
I have one of the later models. I tried and no anti ghosting ): still really cool though omg
@@bullymaguiregaming6812 I mean it is a 20+ year old membrane keyboard, so the no anti-ghosting is to expect. But it would still be an awesome keyboard to have...
true
wait i have a model m all my life and they are supoosed to be rare????
@@keeltou1790 They're not really rare, very numerous in fact
If you damage the barrelplate or it's just split from becoming brittle Unicomp will sell you a new one for around $20. You'll still have to do the screw mode to attach it to the old backplate though.
this deserves way more views dude
That’s a lovely Supra, I’ve always wanted one
Nice, can't wait for the PC restoration vid
Sick video dude, fascinating
I love how you included the linus approved part

Are we not going to talk about that really clean Supra?!
wow nice find buddy!
Shoving air pressure down a small hole is a great way of knocking off resistors. great work tho.
I see 10s of these every month at the place i work and they all go straight to the mill.
sick supra dude !
Dude that Toyota Supra caught me off guard ngl 😂😂
I am a vintage computer collector and I did the same with one of my old keyboards a few years ago and I still use it... and I am typing from it now. My keyboard is an AT/XT switchable made in 1992 (model NMB RT-101+).
nice nice, this one is still in use! Typing from it right now haha.
This is dope. I like this
Dude! That's so awesome what you were able to do with that early Model M. I actually learned some stuff from watching your video. I had no idea electrical pain existed. I'm gonna get some to fix my Tandy keyboard I used in that video. Also that's a pro gamer move cleaning the whole keyboard with a high pressure water sprayer. I never thought of that. So much easier and faster! You should have seen my Tandy keyboard and my PS/2 when I first got them. They looked just as bad if not worse than your computer. Just didn't smell like piss.
Jeez yeah man a lot of things from this era are going to be in bad shape unless you want to sell your kidneys for a clean example on eBay. I'm glad that you learned something! I learned everything too while making this haha. I'm not pro, just learning along as I run across new problems.
@@Shyzah Some stuff yes. My IBM PC XT I got at an "estate flea market" and it was like brand new. It came the University of Michigan State. Everything still works on it. It's crazy. Nothing is missing either. I only paid under 25 bucks for it. It was like $23.27. The guy was funny with his prices. Yeah I learn as I go too. Power washing a keyboard is a pro gamer move if you ask me 😂.
Amazing that there are no scratches on those Model M even though it's was very dirty. I was worry for a second that my Model M get scratched after that stupid USB connector(the metal part) skid with the back of my keyboard. I'm glad these are hard to get scratch and I'll definitely bolt mod mine someday.
Very durable. You can see in the video my cousin started stomping on it while it was in that condition. Any other keyboard would've shattered from the plastic being brittle.
Great find subbed
You are a hero
Very nice video, makes me want to do restoration not gonna lie
sounds so good!!!!!!!
lovely video
IBM Keyboards are actually membrane, there are just strings buckling the thing down when you press a key.
OG "mecha-membrane" switch
@@lettuce7378 op
The Model M is membrane, yeah. They designed a lot of their own internal switch mechanisms in the 70s and 80s. Capacitive buckling spring and beamspring boards use capacitive contacts on PCBs.
There are no strings in a Model M.
Super underrated
i have never heard so many different types of random noises in a youtube video until now.
thanks. i want to restore an M122 soon and will use this video as a guidance.
Neighbour: what does ur son do
His mom: wash keyboards and other things
1:06 yo it’s a SUPRA
If you don't have the right socket for those deep case nuts, you can take the barrel of a Bic pen, soften the end with the flame of a Bic lighter, then push it into the hole against the nut and the plastic will mold itself to the shape of the nut as it cools. You can then use it like a makeshift screwdriver to deal with those nuts.
I might be getting one of my own aswell
Nice video👌
I would love to have this
i went to an abandoned office building and in the basement i found a model M made in 1991 in the office-supply storage room, it was so dark and moist. The upper floors where riddled with black mold and water was pooling everywhere. on the second floor i found a terminal model M made in 1987.
i am now typing on the one from 1991 since i am waiting for an adapter for the older one.
You should get a ultra sonic cleaner. It makes the cleaning process a whole lot easier.
he dedicated a full second to the difference in the f key, poggers
imagine having a 3090 pc with 3 monitors and using an old ibm model m if anyone does that youre a legend
currently on an i9 10850k and a 3060 ti looking for a keyboard like this one, cant find one yet...
@@danielsantoy4366 Model Ms are everywhere, they were made in the millions. I have 3 or 4 of them, including a metal badge one. You could probably find a few at the very first electronics recycler that would let you dig through their old stuff. That's where I got my metal badge one.
Ironically, although I don't particularly like membrane buckling spring, I just recently got 3 gas spring monitor arms set up at work for my work laptop and have a 1989 Model M on that desk at the moment. I much prefer the F107 I usually have there, but it takes up a lot of desk space ... and recent Ebay auction prices make me worry it might walk off.
Haha awesome video!
Amway LOC does the cleaning like no other clenaser,
I do computer maintanance and use it thoroughly.
And, I have that 1985 PC and keyboard.
Now it is a piece of museum but was my first machine.

I can connect you to the factory if you wish.
@@Gatos-hy I was able to find them on eBay actually. I'll just order them from there.
Not much of a sleeper build when you have an open panel letting me see the kickass components in the PC.
0:47 that's an IBM PS/2
Yup, 35SX. Spoiler alert: Itll be like new in the next video!
Ok
Absolutely stunning! Great job!!! Where did you get the new coil cable? Could you send me a link please
I bought this cable: www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/1395113 It's an AT cable, so you'll need a AT to PS/2 or USB adapter to use it on a modern PC.
@@Shyzah They make SDL to USB cables as well, can't even tell it wasn't meant to use that interface from the factory with one of those plugged in.
Bro, you should do more videos like this
I will be!
Nice vid
Wow, Nice video. Any idea how to revive an Apple wired keyboard with the numpad?
I'm surprised that you were able to get it back in the shell after doing a bolt mod with the nuts under the steel plate. I modded my circa 1992 PS/2 Model M a couple years ago and had to use very flat head screws and run them up from below with the nuts on top of the plastic deck. Otherwise I didn't have enough clearance with the bottom row of nuts and the steel sheet wouldn't fully seat in the shell. I wonder if there was a manufacturing revision somewhere along the line that slimmed it down a bit?
Not sure. The nuts i used were pretty thin and i cut away the excess of the screw with some bolt cutters
Nice 👌
I found a model m, old ibm pc and monitor today, I'm going to get them home and restore them too
gasped when he sprayed the keys and electronics with the hose. Yikes
I'm cleaning my wife's Model M keyboard. It is a magnet for cat hair. Put on your favorite music for cleaning all 102 keys separately.
Omg if i look for the title first time I almost had a heart attack i have read this ,,Destroing an Abandoned Mechanical Keyboard for my Gaming Setup! (IBM Model M)``

hey man, how is the gaming performance on this beautiful keyboard? very cool video :)
Nothing special as far as performamce goes, just swagger points lol
it's just as good as any regular keyboard. With headphones on you will not hear your keystrokes. And besides if you want the people in your game to know just turn on the microhpone and let them enjoy ;)

Why would somebody leave that… (angel choir sings) heavenly Model M like that?! 🥺😢😭
Grass: What did i do to you
How much will you take for that keyboard I want it?

A slight correction - model m is using buckling spring not mechanical switches... So I don't think it's right to call it 'mechanical'
okay i get it people are here for the keyboard but im here for him mk3 supra 1:07
Lube it that would be incredible video
I lubed a few keys but it's not the same as lubing a regular mechanical keyboard. It actually makes this one worse. It just feels a bit mushy. Gets rid of that clunky feeling.
