- EXTENDED SCENE (MEMBER EXCLUSIVE): Hollow Grind on a 13" Prop Knife: • Hollow Grind on a 13-i...
Adam builds a prop knife worthy for a magician friend that, unlike every knife he's seen previously as magic props, is actually worthy of stage presence. Its particular shape and dimensionality is inspired by iconic dive knives, making this a fun replica machining project. Adam also gives a primer on precision hole-cutting machine tools at his disposal, and why the annular cutter is the perfect tool for this job. Just keep an eye on that murder foil!

This video seems like it could be a one day build.
Hello Sir Adam, I have been trying to contact you for a while. I am from the Kingdom of Morocco and I have a topic for you that will amaze you.
How come you didn't measure exactly how far you chamfered the inside edges of the holes? They're all different.
I wonder if I could sample the sound 19:16? it's such a cool sound definitely use that for a project I'm working on
This is such an Adam thing to suddenly start elaborating not 1, not 2 and not 3 but FOUR different drill bits while completely off subject essentially.
Monty Python style.
thats why i keep coming back!
It was perfectly on topic. He was drilling holes and wanted to show some options while explaining why he loves those specific drills so much.
I’ve just diagnosed whatever it is that I have from watching Adam. It’s literally like watching a video of myself. All the tapping, the drumming on the chest, oh look a squirrel, the singing certain phrases in opera voice instead of just speaking them, the talking about one thing and going off on tangent about 5 other things that have nothing to do with subject. I get picked on about this condition daily. Sad to say it’s actually caused a lot of problems over the years. Not so much now but when I was a kid , Holy Shit was life tough.
@@VladimirTheLeadHead ?? He just has ADHD. If you have ADHD too then medication might make your life better if you still struggle even though not as badly as a kid.
I will admit, when I saw the title, I thought it was going to be some kind of trick knife where the blade somehow retracts despite all the holes in the handle, but just a big solid hunk of aluminum turning into a knife is still really cool lol
I thought the exact thing.
Me three, why did we think that?
@@DVAnl Because of the title of the video "magic prob knife" sounded like it was made to be "magical" itself.
Yeah, me too, was disappointed - this is just a fake knife lol
And it can hurt someone so far from being a prop either.
"murder foil" Great name, and your excitement at showing us the differences in the drill bits, just awesome. Thank you for sharing all of this.
Adam the best part of sharing your shop time is,... all of us tool nerds are so with your enthusiasm. Regardless of the build.
I think all families need a Adam.Anything need to be made or fixed we just take it to Uncle Adam.It amazes me every time what Adam does. From model making to everything else.Absolute Genius!
I love it when Adam explains the cutting edges of drill bits. :)
One might say it's... cutting-edge content!
If Adam could tell my boss that purchase proper tools not only makes the job easier but also quicker.
challenge your boss to a contest 1 person uses old stuff other uses new stuff depending on what you can borrow or have already thats new just to prove a point :)
Love and respect ✊🏼
I heard the shoutout at 30:25
I feel the same way as Adam, Jimmy.
Murder foil is a great name. I worked at a machine shop at one time and a newbie went to clean out the cnc lathe and grabbed a handful of shavings and it snagged on something so he yanked hard on it and those little bastards cut right through his leather glove and partly into his hand. Those were stainless steel shavings and not aluminum, but still they're no joke.
I just fcking love Adam man, when he is excited, i get excited when he is happy, i am happy. What a beautiful human being.
Drop at the end and the face is priceless.
I haven't heard a more satisfying power on/activation sound than the mill being activated at 5:31. Every time he uses it in a video, I wish things in my everyday life had such a distinct and visceral activation signal as that sound.
Back when I studied mechanical engineering I loved the sound of a mill turning on as well. It's smooth yet powerful and it's one of those "let's get to business" vibes that just works so well.
I think the more shocking part is how quiet his tools are! Any mill, lathe, sanding wheel, belt sander i've ever seen has been 10x louder than his
@@steveskeletonneii6336 many cameras use auto gain. Listen how quiet his voice is right after he shuts down any tool 😉 That mill does sound very smooth though.
I love the chaotic nature baked into every video of Adam making something. I feel right at home
“It’s worth eeeeev’ry freakin’ penny...” Coming soon to Broadway *“Tested: The Musical.* Starring Adam Savage.”
To get the chamfers in the holes equal bring the quill down to the hard stop then bring up the knee until you get the chamfer you want then release the quill then just use the quill down to the stop on each subsequent hole to achieve the same apparent chamfer on them.
I love that you go out of your way to teach us things. Continue being awesome.
It's kind of amazing that somebody who drops things as often as Adam Savage can make such beautiful things. It sometimes looks like he'd struggle to make breakfast.
Murder foil is dangerously pretty
The Devil's Tinsel
It's so great to watch You building interesting things. Since my Dad (who btw was good in building stuff, too) died three weeks ago I'm in a depressed mood these days. But Your calm and still entertaining kind cheers me up. Thanks a lot!
How privileged we are to have front row seats for this for free! I love the Internet some times
Profile pic checks out.
7:17 Perfect "Spanish Inquisition" moment. ❤
NO ONES EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!

Me: Oh yeah, you wanna clear that swarf.
Adam: ... murder foil...
I died.
I'm picturing that weird al video aluminum foil being about that stuff and how bad that would go.
I like that it abbreviates to MF likely the same as what you yell if you do yank on it.
There are some lovely jigs for grinding bevels. As a full time knife maker, they make life a whole lot simpler.
Came here to say exactly this. Vevor sells one that's cheap and seems decent.
@@oxfletch Definitely. Even clamping the knife to a piece of angle iron works. I show that in a lot of my videos.
I started watching this channel as a way to get to sleep but it has backfired. I find it fascinating and end up staying up lol.
Thanks Mr. Savage. Your shop class is alway informative and fun
I love the noise the drill press makes getting up to speed and the little hint of it when it stops. It sounds incredibly well made
Because it is not a drill press but vertical milling machine. :D
Good job on free handing the hollow grind, for someone who doesn't stand in front of a 2x72 all day if came out real nice. Definitely the hardest part of the build.
I've had a smaller version of the same knife for years, that's pretty cool to see it scaled up so big.
I'm planning on making that exact profile of a knife, but in its original size (9" overall), and [ideally] forged and made from a spring; so to see someone else made one via stock removal feels like a gift.
Maaaaan... This guy's enthusiasm has gripped me, (as well as countless others), for so many years!!
I have been binge watching tested ever since I realized it existed last week and I love it so much. It's really fascinating.
The part about the material catching on the drill bit applies to plastic, as well. With plastic, when using twist bits, you need the "sneak up" on it with your drill sizes. Not so with spade bits. Step bits solve the problem, as well.
That was fantastic! What a blast to watch! Thank you so much!
Nice work. I would have probably just cheaped out and made a diamond cross section on the blade. But you can tell this is a matter of pride for you.
Tip: A bog rasp will remove the aluminum faster and wont put ali particles into the air for health and mess reasons.
You are such a good friend adam I am sure he will love it!
Thanks Adam your show was one the ones that helped though a looong hospital stay a few years ago.
They are the best cutters ever. I have a whole set of them for my mag drill.
🇨🇦/🇺🇸... Adam... I very much appreciate you and, frankly, your "human-ness". I think that there are a lot of things that you've done with your life where you might be forgiven for growing a big head... yet you've managed, instead, to keep it real and to be both gracious and grateful. It is always enjoyable, the things I've learned, with each of the random vids that CZcams throws my way. Cheers! :-)
I love the sound that drill makes when it starts spinning!
I love that you talked about the mill bit. I saw the inside surface of the hole and the really nice clean edge, and I was _very_ impressed. And then explaining how you achieved that in a single plunge was just the icing on the cake. Such beautiful, clean work. I could see that on an "oddly satisfying" video, despite the fact that I don't find it odd at all how satisfying that is to watch!
LOVE this! Thanks Adam
Excited Adam making me excited about drill bits!
It sounds like a pitch in attitude .. and may help with attitude- gratitude Adam- brilliant as ever as energy conservation is currently an important aspect!
So glad to see the one day builds back!!! Sooooo Good!
Great job. Thank you 😊
I saw that annular cutter plug in the bit at the end of that first hole and thought exactly the same thing! I have the same rave on those bits. I love those cutters for anything over 15mm.
I'm so in the mood for this!
I have one of those knifes and it's made out of stainless steel. I use it to practice my knife throwing.
Being too shiny is the reason that Bob Ross' palette was sanded to give it a frosted finish! 😁
It's funny as i have exactly the same knife as this, and I've had it for many years now. Been all over and under still using it.
That "one of the scariest things". I had a similar experience, but one notch up on the scary scale. I was drilling brass, lots and lots of small billets. I got called away, and in my absence the shop tinkerer noticed how little rake the twist drill had so decide he would do a good deed and reprofile it. I came back none the wiser that my drill was now raked for steel rather than brass (my workstation - it was still switched off and my "tag" was still on the bed). I clamped up a fresh billet and brought the drill down. The thing bit so hard that rather than pull the job out of the clamps it tore the bed loose from the pedestal and started whipping it around. I still have a small scar across my stomach where an edge cut through my overalls.
im curious, how did you match up the paper template to the holes after drilling them? would it have been easier to put the paper template on before making the holes?
An angular cutter is a thing of beauty! Use them with my mag drill. Center punch, line the center pin, and cut away. Fantastic piece of kit!
You have no idea how much I love watching your videos. Very few people understand how my mind works, and every time you post something, I think, "He gets me! He really really gets me."
Please keep posting even if its just you rearranging dust motes. 😊
Great video Mr Adam sir
Always a fun video when we get to experience Adam's vocal stylings
nice work learned a lot on the drill bit tutorial, more of those please.
@5:14 I just discovered a magical talent of yours. Thanks for yet another amazing upload, much appreciated!
I come to this channel for the tools honestly.
we need just a whole video of Adam enjoying his annular cutter cutting holes
I don't know how I feel about the gloves at the sander. I have always been told thats a no go since your finger can get pulled in. Is there a specific reason you decided to wear them?
Glad I'm not the only one who saw that. Adam is no idiot, and there's plenty of "less than ideal" tool usage on other channels, not just his BUT i do feel that Adam plays a uniquely important role in the world of making given how large his audience is. Things like this that seem harmless to the average person can make less experienced folks feel comfortable doing it if they don't know any better. I wish he wouldn't have done that or perhaps at least addressed it in some sort of "do as I say, not as I do" type snippet. I don't think he should have to constantly walk on eggshells and babysit everyone watching. Ultimately he's just bringing us into his shop to share his builds with us, not teaching shop safety 101. But it's just a bit unfortunate that someone so influential still continues to use sketchier methods when safer alternatives are just as efficient. People think gloves are the SAFER option in this case, and they don't understand how much worse they actually are.
I was cringing hard the whole time when he was using the disc sander with those gloves. I worked in a machining department for years and despite training people not to wear the gloves that were allowed on other machinery - we would still get people who wouldn't listen. During those years I seen 6-8 people get mangled when the gloves caught the equipment. Even though his table to disc gap is pretty small, you still don't want that machine grabbing a glove that doesn't "tear away."
I'm guessing it's to protect his fingers from the heat generated from the alumin(i)um. That's still not a good excuse for any newbies out there. Don't wear gloves near spin-aroundy things.
My gosh1 What a beautiful stage Adam! The place is hUGE!
Some scholars say that Adam is remembering more ways to drill holes to this day.
NICE WORK SHOP!!
Mad Scientist Hair is at a 10/10 for this one. Always adds to that je ne sais quoi this channel provides.
the blade runner blimp in the background
I love this man
Fun fact: the reduced shank drill bits known as Silver and Deming bits are named after the Silver and Deming Manufacturing Company, founded by Albert Silver and John Deming. The company invented and sold them in the late 1800s, but did not patent them. They've been known as Silver and Deming bits ever since.
ouch they missed out on a lot of moneyz! but forever FAME is still impressive
Can I say I find great amusement in the fact that a man with a well-deserved reputation as a master craftsperson and maker is such a clutz?
Now I wanna see the magic trick!
good job with the hollow grind. that time with peter lyon served you well!
I have a throwing knife that looks exactly like this from my grandpa's collection... well done adam! It's a near perfect match! :D
"too shiny it becomes invisible" case in point, c3po's lower leg that was silver. It was so reflective it took on the color of everything reflected in it, making it very difficult to distinguish from his other leg.
I am making wooden drink costers, but yesterday I was cutting plywood on the table saw and I probably used the wrong plywood or the wrong saw because after I cut the square pieces the wood began to sliver off when I started to sand it so I'm going to save the plywood for making shelves and I will get some wood to build the costers that is solid piece of wood and see how it goes. I am building a wooden pedestal, my workshop sign, and finishing a chest for my coin collection, so I have a few projects to do in my shop, which is our car garage. Me and my dad hung up a shelf for tools and hardware over my workshop table.
amazing!
2:20 Adam, you would be utterly amused to know my collection of swords includes a Dominican _machete de bonito_ (dress machete) which is *_literally_* a flat piece of chrome-plated steel. Perfectly functional, sharp, well-balanced... but, quoting you, a _completly flat piece of chrome!_
Adam definitely had the dropsies today. Great video, and thank you for adding "murderfoil" to my lexicon.
These videos would be great with chapters, I tend to skip around the longer videos and lose track of what's supposed to be going on
Another way to get pretty precise holes, but that are limited to certain thicknesses of material, is chassis hole punches. Some of the cleanest and most precise holes for such a simple looking piece of kit.
I still believe Adam should make The Knife that had Russell Crowe in The Man With The Iron Fists!
Definitely check that gun/knife it's a beast!
Lovely build, Adam. This was very fun to watch. Thanks for sharing.
this is making me want to learn machining 😄
got to love your foot pedal saw.
I do enjoy the fact Adam needs to label tools in his own shop
Roll cages for cars used to be built with hole saws but most of us have gone to annular cutters.
Murder foil! Someone is channelling The Dadbod Veteran! ;)
Very well done on the hollow grind. The camera shake during the serration plunge milling suggested the knee was not snugged down. A little drag on X&Y will also help reduce chatter.
Great video as always. I know this maybe an odd question, but I'm curious to know what Adam does with scraps and refuse from the shop, especially murder foil (hilarious name) and other unpleasant trash. How much in a given month or year can be reused or recycled, and how much goes to the dump?
7:17 I've never seen anyone so excited to talk about drill bits. lol
I love the precision on the holes, and it looks great. I've owned some nice knives and I don't think any of them had nearly the level of care put into them as you did for a fake one.
Reddit has ruined me. I read the title as Magic Poop Knife.
why would reddit cause you to read it that way?? whats going on over there
mmm annular cutters, totally worth it! Also Murder Foil, great name I once gave a demonstration using a fresh Xacto blade to an intern... "see you can press pretty darn hard down on this sheet of paper and it only poked a tiny little hole at the tip and dented the rest ... now lets drag it across"
Totally with you on the big shiny floppy blades not feeling like the stakes are high enough with them. It’s an esthetic that always feels a bit comical rather than dangerous.
11:53 I think if the Slo Mo Guys filmed this with one of their phantoms it would be awesome!
I'll be honest, I find that a lot of the time, knowing how a magic trick was done makes it more impressive. The cool thing about watching a magic trick isn't the trick, but the execution. Having someone pull out a specific card from the deck is one thing, but knowing that they memorized the location of the card in the deck, then controlled its location through 4 different types of shuffles, while palming a different card, while never being visible to the person watching makes it so much more impressive.
On the other hand, I suppose its also kinda lame when the trick was just "Oh the card was marked." So I sorta see it for those simpler tricks that basically anyone could execute after reading the instructions.
For my bar mitzvah, we had a magician, and I got to be the assistant for the box-full-of-swords trick. That was very fun (and easier when you're a middle schooler!)
Now we're going to test it on an ice block chop and an apple slice. Thanks for the great vids.
LOL, so many squirrels in this one. Nice ;)
Adam, putting acculube wax in your sanding disc will make them last longer and cut better when sanding aluminum. Little trick of the trade. Great video!
