Uh, where does that come from, the idea that stain sits on top of the wood? Traditional stains do penetrate the wood, and as long as not applied too thickly, will let much of grain show through. Gel stain is a different specific item, which does sit mostly on top of the wood, like paint.

There is difference. Stain does not penetrate in deeper level. Stain stain between grain, dye goes through wood
