    I have become overwhelmed with family items that have been passed down or saved from landfills because they hold memories I treasure and I couldn’t bring myself to let them go until my brother gave me this fantastic idea: take pictures of them and put the pics in a scrapbook with a note about why it was special to me then let it go. That way I can flip through the memory book and still access the memories they trigger without having to store the actual item anymore!

    How great to see someone decluttering who actually cooks, bakes!!! So many narrow kitchen items down to fewer than I needed when I started out, 57 years ago! If one cooks, bakes, we need equipment! Thank you!

    • @TowardsASimpleLife
      @TowardsASimpleLife  Před 2 měsíci

      That’s right! Baking has been a huge part of my life since my mom taught me to make cookies at age 6. I always loved it. Actually, I love all of my kitchen equipment. I use it. I always have. Mom made sure I had everything I needed when I got married. I can’t imagine getting rid of the things I need in the kitchen. I love to bake. It is very soothing and I love seeing how happy my family is when I make something. It sounds like you understand!

    Have you thought about curating your baking recipes? My husband and I both love to bake and cook, we actually met in the food industry, and we really limited down our items to the things we actually ENJOY cooking or baking. Some things are too fussy, some things are too fragile, somethings need very specific tools... and all that clutter adds up. We realized that we no longer host as much as we used to, maybe once or twice a year, and it really was not necessary to keep all of that inventory. When you work in a kitchen you need efficiency, clean spaces, and the tools you actually need and use. A restaurant's menu is also limited and they have spent the time to really perfect their recipes. Less is more. Less options means more delicious meals. At the homefront we have also chosen our go-to meals when we have guests from desserts to main dishes. It was surprisingly easy to do becasue we just went off of our guests favorite meals they request or mention by name. The best to you and your family!

      Interesting idea! I think my problem is that I enjoy the experience of trying new recipes too much. I do have a lot of family recipes - some go back generations - that I fall back on often, but sometimes I just get tired of them and want to try something new. I never know when I’m going to get in the mood for it. Ha! Baking is kind of my guilty hobby. Guilty because it sure isn’t great for the figure. I started baking cookies when I was about 6 and just took off from there. So many good memories with me and my mom and my grandma baking and then later - my kids and my grandkids. Fun times. I’m not a professional though. I’m a happy amateur. 😀

      @@TowardsASimpleLife I totally get it! We love to try new recipes too. We've limited ourselves a ton with 4 little ones underfoot. I was just listening to your slow living video after this one and it reminded me to slow down when we cook. We're so used to have to get out dishes at a certain time you forget to enjoy the process. Have the littles "peel" a potato to the bone😂 or slow down enough to teach our six year old to chop veggies (which is his favorite). Thank you for that reminder.

      I by no means am a professional either. That's my husband. When we met actually I didn't know how to cook. My Mother with five girls never allowed us in the kitchen so I learned nothing growing up. One of the first times I was privileged to stay home with our eldest I wanted to surprise my husband with a dark chocolate cake with ganache. And I read the recipe probably 20x times and I said... okay... it says a cup of strong coffee. I was reluctant and thought maybe it dissolves in the liquid, what do I know, hehe. When my husband bit into it when he got home he praised me and told me how delicious it was. I tried it for my self and it was bitter and crunchy! 🤣🤣🤣. That's the day I knew he truly loved me 😂. And he continued to eat it and tell me how much he loved it while I pried it out of his hands. And begged him not to. My eldest daughter who is now 14 says says that's the new family recipe to test any future or prospective husbands.😅

      Oh memories. I have four children - all adults - but my daughter and her two girls live with us. The youngest one is 6 too. She loves to cook and bake with me. You know what? I need to be more patient with her and get her in the kitchen more. She loves it so much. Sometimes, I just want to get it done. I think my grandma was better at it than I am, but I can try harder. It’s just that sometimes 6 year olds can be kind of squirrel-y. Ha!

      That is a funny story!!! I love this. I can almost see him biting into that. And then he praised you and it. What a keeper. So is he a professional chef? If he is, ask him if he knows ThermoWorks. That’s where I used to work. My husband works for them now. (They kindly took him on when I had to go into retirement because of Long Covid.) they make the world’s best food thermometers. Everyone should own a Thermapen. 😉

      Isn’t it funny that we used to do that? Funny little dishes? My grandmother actually used her pickle dishes and dishes like that regularly. She wouldn’t put a bottle of something on the table. I feel for you with the boot. Hopefully you are out of it by now. I am wearing one for fasciitis. Also have a tendon bothering me. Hubby and I got married in 1976, too! I had a bundt pan like that once....but I got rid of it. *Then* (years later) I discovered The Minimal Mom and her wonderful bundt cake cookbook chockful of recipes. They're easy and yummy. I rebought more than one bundt pan and it's what I'm now known for. (Pies - I count on Marie Callender or Mrs. Smith or Sam's - LOL!) When you were going through your cupboard of glass ware....I had a lot of those pieces, too! I let them go - especially the glassware for the pickles, etc. Well done on decluttering! And I'm sorry about your foot.....at least your hand is better, right?!

    • @TowardsASimpleLife
      @TowardsASimpleLife  Před 2 měsíci

      1976 was a good year. :-) Funny you got another bundt pan. I was always so afraid I'd suddenly get into bundt cakes again, which is why I held onto it for decades past its last use. My family loves cookies and pies best. That cookie cookbook is superb and I could keep making new recipes from in for years. There are more than 1000 of them. Ha.
      The pickle dishes were interesting. My grandmother and mother always had pickles on the table for lunch and dinner. Always. And Grandma never put bottles of anything on the table. She always put it in a nice dish and then put it back in the bottle afterwards. She would have been scandalized to see how casually I do things. Those were different times.
      My hand isn't 100% but it's making good progress, except it was confirmed that I have arthritis in nearly every joint in my hand. I suspected as much. They can't do anything about it, so oh well.. You should have seen my mother's handles. They were gnarly. I guess I have that to look forward to. The good news is that hers eventually stopped hurting.

    Your collection of baking pans and pie pans looks just like mine before I declutterred them all. There are only two of us so I didn’t need them all. I use a cookie sheet with parchment paper when I make scones pat it into a circle then cut apart with my pizza cutter and slightly separate before I bake them. Works just great for triangle shaped scones.

      It sounds like it is working for you. That's awesome! We still have a house-full here. Two of my adult children live with us and two of our grandchildren. Maybe someday we'll be empty nesters, but the economy will have to dramatically improve because it is too expensive for them to rent. But we have plenty of room so it is working out. I'm crazy about my scone pan. I wanted it for a long time and finally got it. (It came from King Arthur's.) Your reminding me of something I want to do. I think I'll finally make the scone recipe I found in Martha Stewart's Pride and Prejudice book today. It's got currants in it!
