  • Stopping A Horse With Your Seat | In this video, I explain how I stop my horse using my seat. This is an aid you use when you are training a dressage horse as you want to keep your rein aids for the multiple other uses we have for them. I find that once I understood this aid it was easy to teach it to a green horse. It is always a part of my young horse training and is a dressage basic that will help you with many other aspects of training a horse for dressage. I hope you enjoy it and gives you some value.

    Being able to stop your horse from your seat is an important basic and one of the foundations that you and your horse need to understand. It doesn't matter what discipline you ride you should understand this and teach it to your horse. I hope this video helps 🙂

    This is perfect! Thank you! I have been working on this with my horse who is way smarter than I am and is probably just waiting for me to figure out how to do this properly (as he does with everything!) so that he can finally react (and stop) the way he was taught to. I love how your videos are not just about teaching us how to teach our horse, but teaching us how we riders need to be. My horse was very well trained when I bought him...I, on the other hand, am an over 50 rider who started riding only a few years ago so I have a lot of catching up to do to be a good partner to my horse. Thank you for helping me get there!!

    You’re videos are by FAR my favorite that I have found. I appreciate you breaking things down for us beginners. My question is how does the horse know (from the trot to walk transition) if you want him to walk on or stop? Also, I have a green horse and am trying to teach him to canter off my leg aids...any videos you recommend for this? We are struggling with canter transitions.

      Thank you for your vote 🙂. The horse should walk as just as he drops down to the walk I will stop the squeeze on the rein and allow my seat to move with his walk movement. If you look at the part in the video where I say "I didn't really want walk" I wasn't quick enough to release my rein and I kept my seat stilled so he stopped. I hope that makes sense. I do have a canter video regarding the aids - see if this helps you czcams.com/video/iPxAHeNsuzY/video.html

    Thankyou for that video I am actually fairing well with the stopping with my seat on my new mount she is slightly bigger than my main girl but very responsive to my soft aids and generally although she is a cob irsh sport at 15 + hands she rides like one of our thouroughbred mares who is ridden with no bit

    Your videos are some of the best I have found for understanding what to do as the rider to invite the right response from the horse. Thank you very much!

    Thank you so much for the videos, they are amazing! I am struggling with my horse cause he was taught to stop was by pulling the bit and I want to change that. It's gonna be a challenge of course but thanks to people like you I see that with patience and practice you can succeed, horses are such special animals, if there's something i learned is that they respond when you treat them right. Your channel is amazing, is helping amateurs like me to enjoy the ride of having a horse, thank you :)

    I've a 4 year old Welsh who I'm currently backing. I was doing a little research as I was struggling with downward transition. Really pleased I've found your page.
    I'm excited to get to the yard to try the transitions using this method as my instructor has asked me to concentrate on more reactive upward and downward transitioning. Your videos are super simplistic to understand! Thank you for taking the time help :)

    Hi Josie. I love the way you explain your videos, really easy to follow. My question on my green horse if you teaching the stopping with your seat and she doesn't get it for a few times. What then ? Rebel is clearly a well trained horse. Regards Mary NB: I am a adult learning to ride p

      Hi Mary, thank you for your kind words. I have done a video on how I teach stop in the very beginning and it talks about the seat at about the 8:20 mark but I'm not sure if it will give you what you are looking for. I will see if I can help you here a little. Most horses wont get it straight away. They learn by association so I start by always using my seat first, then my reins and then my voice if they don't stop. You will find that if you always do it the same way there will come a time when you use your seat and the horse slows down - fabulous praise him. Then he might stop next time Awesome - Lots of praise. It takes time and each horse is different but YOU have to be consistent with your aids - doesn't matter if I'm riding down the beach or doing a dressage test I always use my aids the same order but stop the aids (release the pressure) when the horse does what I want. I hope that helps you. 🙂 czcams.com/video/b_oKZuKYYVg/video.html

    Thanks Josie. When you slow your rise to indicate there will be a change coming, is it just once or do you do this for a few strides? Thanks so much for your advice. You’ve help me ride so much more organised. 🙏💖

    • @BasicHorseTraining
      @BasicHorseTraining  Před 3 lety

      I do it until I feel the horse respond. If he is listening on the first one I will usually just use my outside rein on the next step and then do whatever transition I was going to do. So it would be listen, listen, transition. If he doesn’t listen (come back to me mentally) I will repeat it until he does. It’s no good doing a transition if he is not with me as it will be a bad transition. Does that help? 🙂

      Hi Linda. I don’t use my legs to stop my horse so hopefully you don’t see them because they are not moving very much 🙂
