Wild camp STORM CIARAN ~ NORTENT VERN 1~ FAITH

- #lakedistrict . I have had a few camps in the VERN 1 by Norwegian company Nortent.
But I had yet to face any challenging conditions. Would I still have faith in this tent after a night exposed in a lightweight 4 season tent in this UK categorised storm?
Watch to find how I got on in this deluge!
You can buy the stove featured and the products I recommend here: amzn.to/42MWyvS
I may earn a small commission at no cost to you. Cheers!
You can get the Nortent Vern 1 from valleyandpeak.co.uk/
Great deals like the down shorts at www.magic-mountain.co.uk/
Like the video?
Then please buy me a coffee and help my local Scout unit acquire some good camping gear: www.buymeacoffee.com/fellmandave
Great Vid Dave
Looked a great camp.
You can’t beat the sound of rain on your tent !
Atb Graham
Thanks Graham, though at times this was more like fire crackers going off rather than pitter patter. Thanks for the feedback and taking time to comment. Be good.
I paused the video midway just to say.. what a smart idea to put everything non-essential in the backpack for the night in case of emergency. I can't believe I never thought of that 😬
Thanks Tiger. Its the only time you just HAVE to be organised.
Looking forward to your future video output, thanks for testing a Nortent again. I'm going to get the Vern 2 based on your recent review and will mention that fact to the good folks at Nortent. Thanks
Cheers Peter, that's brilliant!
well done m8 sticking it out You can’t beat the sound of rain on your tent
Thanks Sean, got me dreaming of that sound now......
Nice one Dave... A really well put together video which takes a lot of effort to do so very well done... best wishes Tom
Glad you enjoyed it Tom. I am about to go to bed and snuggle up with your latest Samaya one. Still not sure about that blue colour though, looks like your oldest washed out pants. Yes, I know they are there.
Great little video and test. Thought you might have used 'Ground Anchors'? I haven't really been in any bad storms myself, or I've made sure I was sheltered if I had been. You beat Tom to the storm test. I use clothes pegs to hold the doors back instead of fiddling with the tiebacks it stops all the water from running onto the footprint.
I have some ground anchors but dont rate them personally. I did some holding power tests a couple of years ago, have you seen the video. Plus they are really hard to get into hard gritty ground. Good tip with the clothes pegs, will take some.
I have seen the peg test, thanks. I used the Hilleberge Akto footprint by the way.
Hey Fellman your tent stood up well in the winds it didnt seem to ludicrously flap and suffer the defeaning roar you often see and hear in those other You-tubers videos ..seems its an quiet evening with you fellman..
Winds were disappointingly moderate I guess, the loose inner helps too. Cheers!
Love winter-storm camping
Me too! Just wish I could do more Lars. ❄
Looks terrible haha, only just subbed. I love the coast up there. Really got to get mi arse in gear and get up there. Thank you Dave 👍
Cheers mate, thanks for the sub.
Leaning against the wind on a summit is wunderful.
Close your eyes.......
Omg. I thought you was drinking out your pee bottle. 😮 Glad it was whiskey. As an ex scout leader lemonade bottles work well. 😊 Thanks for the video Dave. Best wishes. Wayne
There is too much blow back with a narrow neck. I take it the scouts had finished the bottle by this point?
Oh I forgot to mention we cut the top off to make a wider neck.
Lovely.👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Enjoyed that Dave! Nice one 😁
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting.
Great video. 👍
Thanks 👍
A wet one. Thanks for the video.
Got a weekend off, no tents to dry!
100% with you on the losing stuff front! I have to have "rules" for everything so I dont have to remember where things are. Labelled bags, set places and above all putting things back when Ive done with them, even if its just for a few minutes have all helped but some evil pixie still keeps moving things and hiding them! Thanks for a great video!
Good guidance, but I think it's doing a video at the same time that really puts a bomb in it! Cheers. 😅
@@Fellmandave1 😂
Thanks for this, was considering the Vern 1, but looks to small and cramped for me so thanks again 😊
Bare on mind though I am a big person wearing a lot of clothes. Actually space is quite good.
Great to see another 'fell man' wearing the Karrimor heavy merino socks, I swear by them. Been using them for years now, I have 6 pairs. Combined with a liner sock (I use the Isocool ones from Mountain Warehouse) they are great in the winter. How did the Scarpa's handle all that wet stuff? Dry feet I hope.
Also, as for going out in extreme weather.....If you are confident in your skills and drills (which you should be being an ML), and have the equipment to handle the expected conditions and more, then it's OK to test yourself, but this must be tempered with the knowledge that in doing so you not only place yourself in harm's way, but potentially others if you get out of your depth and require assistance.
Good spot Andy!
Brilliant video this Dave! Some excellent advice and tips.
Thank you my friend that is really appreciated. PS I know nowt.
@Fellmandave1 your advice on admin and ensuring only minimum essential kit is outside and everything else is packed away ready to leave at a moments notice is consistent with military training mate. #quality stuff 👍👍
Out with two ex military friends tonight. I always learn loads from them. Just scouts for me!
I liked yours and Mr Parks' reviews of the Vern 1 so much I took advantage of their Black whatever week and bought one 😊. That Leif is fantastic to deal with. I am waiting with bated breath (Nortent are in Munich for a week so it won't be dispatched till next Monday😢)
Thanks (again) for your channel
Looks good Dave. I’m back in the lakes next year and am in the market for a new tent. I like the look of these 👍 Simon
Vern 1 new out soon Simon. Should be even better! Watch this space.....
@@Fellmandave1A new version?! I’m very interested in that. As a new camper I’m in the market for a good 4 season solo backpack tent. I had set my mind on the Abisko lite 2, but the Nortent products are also very interesting.
@@jero-se9hn hi, you can see the new vern 2 on th Nortent site, plus the new vern 1 is on Nortents instagram and facebook. They will be sending me both for review so watch this space. They look fantastic though.
That’s great, looking forward to it!
A lovely little video and a nice change from some of the more click-baity storm videos. I liked your musings on why we like camping in adverse weather and what pushes us on. ATB, Graham 👍👍👍
Thank you very much Graham, must work on my baiting. "I was possessed by the storm devil and exorcised in death storm"
@@Fellmandave1 😂
Nice Video Dave, im in agreement with you. I have quite a bit faith in the tent tbh. I do however need to get it out in a proper test...hopefully some snow. ATB Steven
Your turn!
I wonder if 20d fly is strong enough to withstand gusts up to 70 m/h?
I think maybe 30d would be better choice for 4 season tent?
It's all a compromise between weight and strength eh. I agree that 20D is on the boundary. Thanks for watching.
Did you get a new camera as I see this is in 4k... Well done. best wishes Tom
You must have cleaned your glasses Tom. Got one actually about 7 videos ago. Lost the old one, then found it again, but then had bought a new one. You know how it is with US old folk.
I think some times its good to test your gear im not saying head out in 80mph wind but having a benchmark for what you know your tent will handle is a good place to be
Exactly Craig. You don't want to break it or yourself, but just have a comfort margin.
Another cracking video Dave - your reviews are very in-depth and well presented - really 1st class content . Shocked that your 60! 😲 You only look 59 3/4😜 ATB Dave
Well, you go fishing for complements and just end up with a hook through your eyelid. That'll teach me. But all the rest of the comment I am grateful for!
missing your vids dave🥴
Aah cheers Geordie - Hope you are keeping well mate👍- I am still getting out regularly just not filming. But ya never know I might make a comeback 😜Don't suppose you know whats happened to Mark Dack?- he seems to have vanished off CZcams😖 ATVB Dave
@@hillwalksandwildcamping3322 pleased your still getting out mate👍aye life gets in the way sometimes 😏 iam still getting out just keeping it varied. mark's was a cracking channel sure he was busy with studying?. take care bud👍
Great video, was looking at your amazon store it shows about 5 stoves.. which do you recommend to use with that gas bottle and pump?
That is the SOTO stormbreaker, multi fulel stove. Otherwise gas only, get the soto fusion trek. cheers!
@@Fellmandave1thank you does it connect to those fule bottles with pump.? It's that soto as well?
The stormbreaker comes with the bottle and pump and a gas adaptor. see my other reviews on it and all will be clear
@@Fellmandave1I'll try and find them tha ks.
Very nice video, and as a self proclaimed fanboy I especially like me some Nortent camping videos.
One question, though. Did you say that you have a "leak" coming in through one of the vents, or was it just my lack of English proficiency that was playing a trick on me?
Well there was water along the seam, so i think it was coming in either through a part of the seam, or at the vent. it was not a major thing considering the storm blown heavy rain and was no inconvinience, but i will need to check that seam and seal around the vent, which i had not done.
cheers RP.
Hi Dave
I love your videos, but I don't get it with this tent. How can it be better than our beloved Tarptent scarp 1 which is lighter, roomier, cheaper and just as strong in a gale? Or is it just as strong? Is this just a better 4 season tent than the scarp 1 in your opinion?
This Nortent looks like a coffin....horrible when you're wet, need space to change and rest....and , yes, you lose stuff in a small space.
Am I missing something, sir?
😊🎉
maybe a little modest🤔but as you rightly say we never stop learning 👍
well Imran, there are pluses and minuses. plusses are things like bigger vestibule, ability to regulate the door ventilation, each side door, tougher pole sleeve,(soon to be double capable) more robust outer fly. i think the scarp will be better in warmer weather as a vern is a warm tent. Have you seen the other video when i compare? i agree the inner is a little droopy but that was more this video how it looked, a couple more attachment points inside required. Thanks for commenting. As for better 4 season, hmmm not sure like I say plusses and minuses, the big vestibule really is very useful.
every day!🤓
Thanks, both.
😊
As a backpacker, I sought shelter in foul weather so that I could sleep well and carry on the next morning. I have had to descend in the dark a couple of times. Incidents like that show that we retain more control than might initially be obvious if we are thoughtful and fairly fit.
Great tent but it does look on the small side with your head touching the roof at either end. Ps I’m 6’3” so impossible for me
Keep a look at for the next version, but it is better length wise than it looks in this video.
Not if you check out the actual specs, it is massive length wise.
