- Margaret of Valois - First Wife Of Henri IV Of France: Margaret of Valois was born on 14 May 1553 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye and died on 27 March 1615 in Paris. She is also known as la Reine Margot, was Queen of France and Navarre and Duchess of Valois.
Her life was marked by scandal, intrigue and tragedy. Married to the Huguenot King Henry of Navarre as a devout member of the Catholic Church, she was a pawn of religious and political parties in the struggle for power in France throughout her life due to the French Wars of Religion.
Margaret maintained an unconventional lifestyle for her time, which contributed to numerous rumors at the French royal court. She herself did not counter this gossip, so that her person was often portrayed in later publications as vicious and immoral. Today's historians, however, attest that she merely took liberties that were usually customary only for male members of the nobility at the time.

Queen Margaret, was the sole survivor of the race of Valois. A known poet and fashion icon. After her death in 1615, she achieved further fame when her juicy memoirs were published. Thank you for the excellent video.

Love this! I just finished reading Nancy Goldstone's "The Rival Queens" about Margaret and her mother Catherine, and Margaret was treated so poorly by almost her whole family. At least Margaret was able to live her last years on her own terms.

That is one excellent read. I can't believe how badly Henri III abused her (Margo). I Love that book! Did you like it? Favorite parts? I remember Margaret and a friend fetching their lovers' severed heads for burial. How beautiful her dresses and hair styles sounded. Do you think Katherine might've poisoned Charles to bring Henri back? OMG! I could talk about it for hours! sorry!
@@auntmaddie I quite liked it as well! Henri III was especially terrible to Margo, her mother was a close second! I'd like to read a book focused on Henri III to get more insight into what his problem with Margo was if that information is available. I really enjoy Nancy Goldstone's writing, I hope she does more on the topic. 🙂
Gotta appreciate a royal couple that knows when to call it quits as opposed to couples who just stayed in the marriage and were miserable the whole time.

Very interesting post and I thank you for sharing this. The story of Marguerite de Valois here is quite different from the one in the movie "La Reine Margot" from the 1990s that starred Isabelle Adjani as Margot and Virna Lisi as Catherine de Medici. That movie, which I believe was based on a novel by Alexandre Dumas, painted Margot as a rather promiscuous woman while here in your video, she was actually very well educated and a promoter of the literary arts. It is also worth nothing that the real Margot looked nothing like Isabelle Adjani. But, history aside, Adjani was very good in that movie as was Virna Lisi and Daniel Auteuil who played Henri de Navarre.

As I read the book and watched the movie. I can assure you that the only similarity between the two is the title. In the book she's strong independent, tries to save her brother and her husband, there is a moment where she humiliate her mother and that's so funny. It is my favourite book of all times and when I watched the movie I was shocked and I spent 2 hours complaining on everything. The only good thing of the movie is that Henri is well represented and starts by saying something like : "your mom killed mine, hello."
I'm currently reading the last book of the trilogy of Valois and there is a moment where we see her again and that's absolutely wonderful.
I'm glad that she ended up having a happy life after the crap her husband and family put her through. It is funny that Margaret and Henri IV got along so well after they divorced. Another great video! Thank you!

Being the daughter of a French king, the sister of 3 kings of France (and also of Scotland and Poland), a former queen of France herself in good terms with her ex-hisband the king, no wonder that she managed to kept a pretty high status until the end! Good for her! Too bad later writters wrote the bad reputation of Queen "Margot"

This video is amazing!! I'm so intrigued by Katherine de Medici, her children and the end of the Valois line. So very well done! Poor Margaret. I've read Henri III and Charles IX supposedly abused her in every nature including sexual. Smh, She loved Henri de Guise...they should've let them be. And her mother was worse then a cat and didn't care for her. Just awful. Thanks for a great video!

I know the host's wonderful voice and narration lends an air of sweetness and sentimentality to the subject matter; but, in fact, most of these people - men and women alike - were intrigeurs, untrustworthy, and downright cruel. In short, they were ALL horror shows, in one way or another, and would stab you or me in the back without hesitation if it suited their interests. Cheers!

I always wonder what this complicated period was like- I had Huguenot ancestors from Lorraine, who fled to England in the aftermath of the massacre, & they were apparently silversmiths- so they were just artisans; the modern equivalent of like well-to-do working class. They were not royals or nobles- just regular people.
What was it like for them- to give up everything they had ever known, just to keep this new faith? Yes, as Protestants they were welcomed, & as artisans they had the ability to make a livelihood- but it would have been such a hard choice; did they feel pressure to reconvert? Was that even a question? What was it like, to get all the way from Lorraine to England?
I would like to get some of the answers one day...

OMG, my Mum just found Huguenot silversmiths among the ancestors of a relative by marriage! The family didn't leave France til after an edict against Protestants from Louis XIV, but thanks to this channel I could tell her a bit about him, & the earlier history of the Huguenots.
This was a very interesting video, of a surprisingly interesting figure. Maybe you can expand your content to the histories of the chateaux you mention.
I think it's a bit too 'niche' for youtube, not sure if that would attract many viewers, although personally, I'd love to do that !

Good video and correct story. However there are mistakes in the pictures. For example, in few cases you have put the wrong picture of Queen Elizabeth (wife of king Charles IX) instead of Marguerite. Also when speaking of Henry IV’s mistress Francois de Montmorancy you have put the picture of another mistress - Catherine Henriette de Balzac d'Entragues

My fave French queen!! 😍 Thanks for such a great vid about her! I learnt heaps & I like & admire her even more- & I'm even less impressed with how everyone in her life treated her. It's wonderful that she was good friends with Henri IV & his new wife tho; it speaks well of them all, even if Henri had been a pretty awful husband to Marguerite. La Reine Margot is one of my fave films, tho I dunno how accurate it is; I saw it years ago.

I very much enjoyed this piece. Did Margaret have an affair with Henry de Guise in her early life and very much want to marry him? His family was a very important one nat the time. Wasn't he an uncle of Mary Queen of Scots? A marriage between Henry de Guise and Margot could have happened, but then I suppose Henry would have thought himself a superior ruler to Henri III - not very a very hard decision to come to. I suppose Catherine de Medici wouldn't have liked that very much. Weren't Henry de Guise, Henri de Navarre and Henry III known as the "Three Henrys"? Henri de Navarre must have appreciated Margot's help to escape Paris after their wedding and the Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre. I think they enjoyed a friendly relationship for some time. Margot was a princess, but while she had position and possessions, she never really got what she wanted in life and seems to me to have been a tragic figure. Years ago I watched La Reine Margot, and felt sorry for her. I won't comment on the non-existent morals, but we are talking about the de'Medici family. How could you possibly be a moral person in that family! Thank you so much for posting some information about Margot.
