    Certainly one of the great piano works of the 20thC. It's interesting to hear how much Cage was indebted to Satie in this music.

    Cage! One of the very few modern/contemporary musicians who doesn't distress me.
    There is no omnipresent search for torment or the expressionism of ugliness at all costs.
    Here there is amazement, measured amusement, light melancholy, a taste for beauty.
    There is intelligence and Love!

    I love John Cage, very much not because of his talent, but because of his warm mind and compassion to the mankind. I believe that he tried to help the people who do not have enoght talent and skill of music are able to create creative work witt the help of chance operation and indeterminacy technique. I belive that recent Ai era is the very era when John Cage's philosophy and viseion can be realized easily.

    Great performance. I have a recording by Yuji Takahashi that I really like. I would say that his version is a bit more melodical, whereas this one is more rhythmic, bringing out a different aspect of the piece.
    Fascinating to follow along with the score!

    • @OrlandoBBass
      @OrlandoBBass  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yuji Takahashi's recording is lovely, I agree!
      We probably made different choices on the kind of piano to use, it sounds like he chose a concert grand, whereas I did this recording on a similar piano that Cage had in his studio at the time (Steinway M). It's incredible how different recordings of this piece sound. I wonder if the fact that he noticed every performance was so unique (according to the choice of piano, the kind of bolts and screws used...) is what pushed Cage towards aleatory music, when he realised that he couldn't control with precision the rendering of these pieces.

    Check the score! John Cage gives the following instructions to a pianist: ‘LOCO’ - a Spanish word, meaning ‘CRAZY’; or ‘RITARD’ - a Maltese word, meaning ‘WEAK IN THE HEAD’. 😂‘Sonatas and Interludes‘ is a boring, lacking imagination primitive student work. John missed an opportunity to take lessons from George Crumb who was much more talented and inventive in his compositions for amplified piano.

    This is few of the most useless pieces of music ever writen. Music should evoke some emotion, but this evokes nothing...

    • @requiem5398
      @requiem5398 Před rokem +14

      Where is it ruled that music must evoke emotion? All art can be and is, by itself, experimental in nature. Pushing the boundaries of music and sound is also art.

    • @LaserDawg
      @LaserDawg Před 11 měsíci +1

      It sounds bad, unusual, sure, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t evoke emotion. Perhaps you’re too used to traditional music? I agree that it sounds better, but it evokes no less emotion than this music.

      @Gabrimedde Před 9 měsíci +2

      Lmao you are literally talking about a composer who didn't care about the sound. For Cage there is only his meaning of the piece: the notes aren't important, the idea behind this music is.

    I honestly wouldn't know if I would even do such a thing to my piano like this. Not that I hate this, but simply bc You can damage the piano doing something like this.

    • @OrlandoBBass
      @OrlandoBBass  Před rokem +5

      I understand the feeling, but as it is, this preparation does not not damage in any way the piano, unless you are being careless while installing it. John Cage took the time to study what would cause harm to the instrument (probably alas by trial and error), and despite there being around 80 objects in the piano, there is nothing to worry about concerning the safety of the instrument.
      Actually he came up with this definition "an instrument is said to be prepared if and only if when it is unprepared the instrument stays intact" (I'm paraphrasing)
