- With the "Final Fantasy spirit" of seeking new challenges, Square-Enix made an incredibly ambitious mobile JRPG. Mobius Final Fantasy had several long-time FF developers attached to its crew: Yoshinori Kitase, Kazushige Nojima, Motomu Toriyama, and many others.
What does Mobius Final Fantasy mean to me? Here is my reflection.
Sorry it took me 2-3 years to get this out. Reasons why are explained in the vid.
Just know I have missed making FF videos and I set myself a schedule to keep making these. I have some big surprises coming for the remainder of the year to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the series.

Even after 200+ hours in this game, I just realized that Wol's name stands for Warrior of Light.
This game was something truly special ... hope they re-release/remake it in some form in the future 😭❤
I played it late, but I was so amazed at how good it was (especially for a mobile game). A reworked console version could be pretty cool-similar to what they’ve done for Crisis Core.
It may be coming back. The websites responsible for hosting tier lists and things of that nature have put the info back up on their sites 2 months ago. Why do it for a game that's dead? It's coming back. I believe it is

Aaaaah, Mobius Final Fantasy is one of those games you never forget ! I loved it so much, it's a shame that so many FF fans slept on it because it's a mobile game !
I truly hope Square Enix will release a console version soon, cause the hard work and love put into this project deserves more recognition than being a memory.
Played since release, till this day I hold this gaming experience as one of the best ones I had in my 33 yrs of being alive. Made me laugh, made me cry, got frustrated but loved this game more than I have any other FF I've said this game can rival any console game in the series and its the only FF game that till this day I wish for it to come back.. literally today as I was in the kitchen it hit me as I was playing Octopath travler loke... "damn where's Mobius" 3 years since the game closed still wishing it to come back.
Ty for the vid brother 🙏 literally made my night everytime I see a Mobus vid it re ignites that passion I've had for FF... over the years I've lost that love but because Mobius spoiled me more than any other ff game lol 😆
I REALLY wish I had started playing it early in its lifespan. I can tell that the Mobius fanbase was super passionate.

I remember that grand opening, when Vox first spoke to us and said that, no matter who you were, no matter who you are, it doesn't really matter at all. Those phrases with the background music and everything, it really moves my heart like mountains.
It has this opposite effect of elevating my being, that here, in Palamecia, unlike in the (ironically) desolate world we live in today which are rife with conflicts, broken souls and failures, in Palamecia, it doesn't matter what past you may have, those who would take arms and fight will conquer fate, those who are willing to fight, will not be forgotten.
I can tell you really loved Mobius.

I still listen to the intro every now and then. The opening with "Do you know who you are? [...] But who you are, and who you were, mean nothing here. For your past is no more than a light long faded" feels really strong. You might have been someone famous and strong once, you might not. You don't know. Now you have to shape your own story.
I miss Mobius FF and I love it so much. Nothing can replace it.

Played the day it came out and a game like this was the best mobile game i ever played and hearing mogs theme again makes me wanna cry because that was the only scene in the game that actually made me tear up
Mobius was the first and only ff game i've played, i remember playing it as a 9 years old and wholeheartedly hope that squareenix bring it back as it is the game that made my whole childhood
I miss this game. The card artworks are really beautiful. the music is great and the unique combat system... And i had a crush on some of WOL's jobs (Eorzean Knight, im still looking at you).
Theatrythm Final Bar Line has confirmed to have tracks from Mobius and a playable WoL included, It's nice to know that Mobius isn't entirely forgotten, they even have Record Keeper tracks too.
I’m very excited about Theatrhythm FBL. I loved the first two. I saw Mystic Quest tracks on there too!

Thanks, I too loved MobiusFF it was a great game, I always wished they would release it without servers, so It could be played forever.
I also would have gladly payed a lump sum for the game to help keep it alive. An offline version could definitely work though!
Mobius was truly ahead of its time for a mobile game and really experimental for what the team and SQEX did. I know the community always hopes it would come back though as do I...I wish SQEX would do more to memorialize this game instead of trying to forget about it. It only lives on in its art (TCG), music (the new Threatryhtm, can't spell). I mean it has a canonical FFX story
I’m sure the fanbase would have been happy enough if they shut down the servers but created an offline version. I would have paid a full standard price for that.

God, it disgusts me so much to see a piece of art like this become permanently inaccessible. Capitalism always ends up cannibalizing its best creations; obviously, Mobius would still be here today if it were "profitable enough" for SE. This still looks like a better game than nearly anything available on mobile phones today. Among the 5 FF mobile titles that have been made, I think all 5 were unique enough that they should have all stayed available, and Mobius stands out as being the only one that goes for a modern FF console type experience. We still have Brave Exvius, WotV, and Opera Omnia, but they're all extremely different from Mobius as well as each other. Bring back Mobius and Record Keeper!
I remember downloading this game despite my experience with the series being mainly mobile demos of some of the older games. I was mainly just wandering through the game not truly understanding how combat works or how to make it more enjoyable as the concept of mobile games that weren't just simple gameplay tasks was new to me at the time, but I still remember the moments I've had with the game and very much miss playing it especially now that I have more experience with the series since then.

Heavy narrative-driven mobile games aren’t usually on the forefront. It seems to mostly be maximizing revenue with as little effort as possible. Makes me respect Mobius that much more. Hopefully we see more ambitious mobile games in the future!
Had this video playing in the background while just vibin in minecraft, it brought back a lot of good memories from a time long past, hearing the osts again readmiring the art of the game really shows it was something truly special and i really enjoyed my time playing it. When the servers begin to shut down i was 17 bout graduate highschool and getting ready to move with my mom to our first apartment in years. Today im a couple days past my 21st birthday and again getting ready to month with my mom again in her first house shes ever owned. Time flies and hearing you about the birth of your child reminded me of what really matters right now in this moment. Thank you for this wonderful video and being a beautiful human being. Now im going to start focusing packing our things. Farewell

I'll dare say this but if Mobius FF was not made I doubt we'd have games like genshin (which IS a high quality mobile game) for at least a few more years!

I may be one year late, but i have to put my thoughts into letters about this game, have it put down SOMEWHERE.
The story of Mobius FF is a surprisingly subtle one, not just about Wol facing Chaos and going through the prophecy, but rather having a protagonist observe the engines of said prophecy, how a blind obedience, a blind hope towards it can be destructive. This protagonist is one being offered a "persona", a role of "hero", but being effectively just a collar for the world's balance at the price of true freedom.
The story is about a protagonist that wants to go against these forced waves that are the Prophecies, change the world so it may not be bound to its laws, and its people not be bound to a mask that was forced to them.
This story isn't just a communion of FF's story, it's also a mixture with a twist, and one that is very much unique to this game, and one I want people to not neglect.
And of course, that's just touching the story of Act1, and although Act2's ending was rushed because of the shutdown announcement, a good chunk of it really is worth remembering, but also bringing back, in best of cases

It really is a shame that a solid project will ultimately be forgotten by time. I wish Square would do more to preserve these titles. Maybe with enough of us speaking up...we can at least get offline ports.

I do not know if you have heard the news, but it has been announced that Nier Reincarnation is about to get closed.
And similarly to Mobius FF, it is an experience i recommend going through before it's too late.
How I crave for Mobius to be remembered and to be on a private server. One of my all time favs for a mobile game is not even refrenced and I would love to see it so.
The graphics are the best for mobile games at that time. Maybe it seems normal for now but man this was released on 2016! I only finished the warrior of light and warrior of despair story but I can tell the story are really good

Man mobius... this one hurts so bad, i think everytime of this game, it was one of the best games ive ever enjoyed, the characters, the aestethics, the soundtrack, the story and the jobs and cards, bro it was too special, playing this game outside when you are on your way somewhere was also nice for me, it was the whole world of palamecia that i will never forget, i hope to this day this game will come back somehow but it seems like SE is only about money now... i hope so bad they change about mobius.
I’m still hoping for an offline remastered version of this on all platforms.
@@optimysticquest Its been a long time man since the server shutdown, i remember someone saying that its so difficult to make an offline version because the game is heavily server and connection related and with the gacha and so on. SE is kinda only looking for money now, ive paid a shitload of magicite in mobius like others... so sad.
This game still lingers with me. Still such a bummer that it will never get another chance to shine. This could have been a game worth a console or pc port

If you’re looking for developer interviews, many of them I got from the official art book from Japan. I then used the translator app and scanned each paragraph one at a time. There is much more info in there I didn’t cover!

This is the only mobile game that i could literally spend HOURS at a time playing. In my opinion this wast the only great mobile game ever, and I truly miss it with all my heart. Brave exivis is ok (sorry if i misspelled it) but mobius is one of a kind.
I hope Square decides to remake Final Fantasy Mobius into an ARPG for the PS5.
That would certainly be interesting. I think it could certainly be reworked like they’ve recently done with Crisis Core.

I was thinking of this game just last week. unfortunately I only played a handful of missions before it was closed, and stranger of paradise made me reminisce on it as well. during that time I stumbled upon a guy who's basically reverse-engineering the game to make an offline version - I can't post the link here because youtube already deleted my comment once, but you can find it in a tumblr named blank project dev.

I loved this game. Played since the start and spent enough time in the battle towers to drive anyone mad and still wish we could play this in single player some more.
With enough push, anything is possible!

Sad you never got experience Season 2. Story got me gripped through it. Specially added 2 new characters. Graff and Sophie. Rather funny WoL is jack of all trades while Meia is mage job. Sophie the Monk job
Sarah Ranger job. Graff Warrior job. Sarah was a total badass. Granted most of my cards are heavily ranger based. Barely got good warrior or Monk ones. Mage picked up for me after awhile. Specially the Supreme cards. Gods I love them so much.
I do love the artwork on the cards. Love collecting them even though lot are practically useless but their so detailed.
This game looks sick! I’ll have to try it out. I didn’t play a YGO videogame that followed the actual rules until Nightmare Troubadour. I miss the GBC/GBA era. The grind was brutal, but it made it all the more rewarding.
Also the password machine needs to make a comeback for the modern games. I remember having the card price guide book that had cards until Invasion of Chaos, with pictures included. My brother and I would input passwords left and right and ask ourselves why we couldn’t get Chaos Emperor Dragon in Forbidden Memories lol
This makes me sad I never played this... or even heard of it until this video! Like you I don't pay attention to mobile games so this slipped right under the radar for me.
Besides the mobile aspect it makes me think about how games that rely on servers will never be able to be played by future generations, the only thing remaining of them being gameplay footage online. With Google Stadia shutting down, any "exclusives" on there will be lost to time unless someone manages to emulate it. And that makes me think about game conservation and how hard it is to play older games nowadays and how hard it will be in the future. Maybe one day someone will be able to emulate Mobius to give those who couldn't play the game a change to play it.

It’s an important topic, for sure. There is actually exclusive Final Fantasy XV content on Stadia. It will be forever gone. Wish they’d at least update the other versions and patch that content in, but probably won’t happen. Another FF mobile game (good one too) just shut down a week ago also.

Those are going nicely but it's a bummer that it slows down projects I want to make. I made decent progress in the video I started after my last one, but I had to put that on the side for various reasons and then started on another one, which I *hope* I can get done by the end of the year.

@@optimysticquest One of the best turn-based game experience i've ever had so far. This character really deserved a better place to live. I hope SE remember him at some point to make an appearance in future Final Fantasy entries.
I mostly play FF games for the story and characters. The music, art and presentation of Mobius were nice and the battle system was fun. But none of the characters or world did anything for me. The writing has all the worst tendencies of Nojima and Toriyama's scenarios, and none of the good. It doesn't feel much better than Square's other mobile games to me, besides the fancy presentation.
And all the pretty art from, and references to, previous games only served as a reminder of how much better and more likeable those games and characters are.
That's just my opinion though. I'm glad you and others did enjoy the game. And I did like your video as an overview. It sucks that server based mobile games like this will just die when servers are shut down, and publishers don't care enough to preserve them in any way. So videos like this are important.
In some ways I’d certainly agree with you. I thought that Wol’s character (and voice acting especially) needed serious work.
Video game preservation is a serious issue right now. Since we still don’t have an official port of Before Crisis FF7, it makes me doubtful that offline versions of these mobile games will ever see the light of day.

@@optimysticquest I'm not sure what the state of emulation is for games like this. But I'm guessing it's really hard to get working when half the game is on Square's servers. So something like Mobius is probably not gonna get preserved by the emulation community either, sadly.

hi Optimystic Quest, i know this is a bit late but could you do a segment on Final Fantsy Record Keeper? Sadly the game has shut down this past month and it would mean the world if you did a segment on it?
My goal is to do a “Reflection” for each and every FF game. I played it a bit when it launched but didn’t keep up with it as much as I would have liked.
However, I will eventually make something for it one day. Every FF game will be talked about at some point.

Chapter 6 gave you a problem. I assume was Meia's story. Was rough due never had good mage cards. Was all ranger based.

This one of a few games where I actually did make a yearly purchase because I waned to support the title. Thats not to say, I bought currency to advance my character; I didnt have to, the game was generous without spending money. I spent money on this game *because I enjoyed it* and wanted it to thrive. I really miss this title. I wish they'd consider an offline re-release.
