Ah.. I still remember on a FNM during Kamigawa when my opponent said, "I'll play another Meloku." Everyone at the table just stopped and stared. He looked around, then down at the table and quietly put both in the graveyard.
Correct me if I'm wrong but... Because the phantasmal image (and clones I general) doesn't target the creature, you can choose a creature with hexproof and have no downside.
I had to do a double check on most cloners I could, and you're actually right. Just about all of them say "as a copy of any creature" instead of "target creature" in the text. Even the newer ones. Insane, really.
I actually have Meloku the Clouded Mirror in my edh landfall deck. It's nice to be able to load your hand back up on lands and Meloku gives you a way of doing it while getting a little extra value.
Ah yes, the good ol' legendary rules. They made sense from a flavor perspective but led to some hilariously silly strategies like the infamous "Seal of Jace", a 3-cost Jace Beleren being run for no other reason than to stop 4-cost Jace the Mind Sculptor from hitting the field on curve
There were also the people during the original Kamigawa block running Dimir with 4 Kokusho/Keiga, almost exclusively to play a second one and get two triggers, not counting the free hit on the air. But yeah, I think the Counter Jace was the most famous use of the Legend rule, followed closely by Geist of St. Traft being countered by Phantasmal Image.
Yea this is an important missed thing that contributes to it's score greatly. It's like when Jace Beleren used to see play just in order to make sure your opponent couldn't play Jace the Mind Sculptor
Phantasmal Image also allows you to have more cards in a role too, for example that each do a thing for each other of their role. Got three play-sets of the role, and hey there's also the image.
What if this game is just an illusion? What if Magic the Gathering isn't real and we've all been playing Poker this whole time? What if this video is actually "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)" but I just can't see it? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
Point Of Order! Actually, the first Illusion card ever printed is Phantasmal Forces from Alpha. Granted, it was grandfathered into the Illusion creature type, but it still counts!
Yooo, top 10 artists in MTG! Amount of artworks, or amount of cards painted that were doing best in tournaments and what those cards were, or something :D
I'm REALLY surprised Krovikan Mist doesn't get a lot more love. Insanely good card for an illusion tribal deck. 2 mana cost for an x/x flyer equal to the number of illusions IN PLAY. I love them just as much as my Phantasmal Images & it's a common
@@NizzahonMagic yeah I understand that's why it didn't make your list. I was just speaking in general. Trying to spread krovikan mist awareness I suppose. Nobody I ever talk to seems to know about it until I play mine
How often would the Illusion drawback come up in play, anyway? Tricks aren't really a thing outside limited so if my opponent is targeting my creatures I'd assume it'd be to remove them anyway. I don't play competitive so I'm assuming there's some common interaction I'm missing?
It seems like it comes up more often than you would think, though. Like, putting a +1/+1 counter on target creature, or target creature can't block this turn, etc.
I wonder how long until you can make a video on plants, since they are making a few decent ones. May or may not be excited to make my plant tribal commander deck
Standard Dredge wasn't really a big thing. The payoffs weren't there. Extended was the first format to have a true Dredge deck, because that format had Ichorid.
@@NizzahonMagic I think extended dredge had the whole odyssey-block (with Cabal Therapy, Careful Study, Breakthrough, Cephalid Colloseum) but spiral block provided not only narcomoeba but gemstone mine, bridge from below and Flashback reanimation. There wasn't much dredge support from MTG's early sets.
I'm suddenly suffering a case of "Cranial Flatulence", but for the #2 Moeba, isn't it's ability belong to Red/Black cards? Madness! Just remembered, if you discard it, you can play it for a much cheaper price. Is that it, right?
I was watching this waiting for true name nemesis to pop up....turns out he is a merfolk rogue...I'll see myself out lol
I'd be interested to see where Skyclave Apparition would have fit on this list if it was included.
Somewhere between 10-8
I'd think it would be fairly high - it's a strong recent card that I saw a lot used against me (after I used it for months myself.)
Ah.. I still remember on a FNM during Kamigawa when my opponent said, "I'll play another Meloku."

Turn 1: Phantasmal Bear
Turn 2: Lord of the unreal
Turn 3: Illusionary Servant
Turn 4: Phantasmal Dragon
Old school mono blue aggro 💙
I have this deck
Correct me if I'm wrong but... Because the phantasmal image (and clones I general) doesn't target the creature, you can choose a creature with hexproof and have no downside.
yee
If I recall correctly it was one of the main ways people could deal with gheist of st traft using the old legend rule in the standard of the time
Yep, unless you do what one of my opponents tried and equip it with Runechanter's Pike.
I had to do a double check on most cloners I could, and you're actually right. Just about all of them say "as a copy of any creature" instead of "target creature" in the text. Even the newer ones. Insane, really.
@@hitlord Not really; wording them differently would mess up their functionality quite a bit for no significant gain.
The real illusions were the friends we made along the way
@@folderrr I mean, we have Morophon, so technically you could say we do just bc he's every creature type.
I actually have Meloku the Clouded Mirror in my edh landfall deck. It's nice to be able to load your hand back up on lands and Meloku gives you a way of doing it while getting a little extra value.
Very nice!
I thought that Phantasmal Image also gained points because it worked also as "Destroy target legendary creature".

Another thing with Phantasmal Image is that, with the old legend rule, it was a 2 mana removal spell for legendaries, including ones with hexproof
Yea this is an important missed thing that contributes to it's score greatly. It's like when Jace Beleren used to see play just in order to make sure your opponent couldn't play Jace the Mind Sculptor

Heck yeah, got a lot of these cards in my Illusion Insanity Commander Deck!
Minn, Wily Illusionist?
@@aliertufekci1993 Neat, I never saw that card til now! Love the art!

😂
Everytime there is video about Ice Age I click, it's the first set I played with, so many good memories!
As someone who has a Rayne Academy Rector Illusions deck for EDH, it’s lovely to see a video about the creature type in other formats
nice to see somebody who knows what that card is...
Time Spiral represent!
Though, I was a little disappointed Ixidron didn't show up.
It's 1am here in Florida and I'm so happy you did a video on illusions.
Hope you enjoyed it!
I remember copying Sun Titan with phantasmal image then bringing more copies of Sun Titan.
I loved the Solar Flare deck!!!
Murmuring Mystic is my fav card!
That's so crazy! I just finished putting together my Minn EDH deck like last week!! xDD
Nice!

0:27 I thought your clothes are full of sweat, but it was just the microphones shadow XD
Thank God its just the microphone!
Expected narconeba cause I saw some nice oops all spells videos lately. It never crossed my mind that the clone creatures were illusions.
Excellent work, Nizzahon.
Thank you kindly!
@@NizzahonMagic You're welcome! I hope you have a great day.
Glad to see phantastic 🐻 made the list!
Glad to see meloku on the list! I've always thought it was a really cool card.
1:09 Phantasmal Forces, I believe were retconned as an illusion. They were in Alpha.
Yep
@@NizzahonMagic same with Phantom Monster
Aaaah yes! *Bird Boi.*
A beloved member of my Wizards deck.
Just built an illusion tribal EDH deck, one of my favorite creature types.
Nice!
Phantasmal Image?
Edit:
AYYYYY.
Aw man this list is a little bit less stacked than I thought it would be, still love the illusion creature type though!
The top two are pretty impressive at least!

Problem is that Illusion tribal decks were only ever very briefly a thing in competitive Magic, and when they were, Krovikan Mists wasn't legal.
@@NizzahonMagic yeah I understand that's why it didn't make your list. I was just speaking in general. Trying to spread krovikan mist awareness I suppose. Nobody I ever talk to seems to know about it until I play mine
If you're playing Meloku or Minnie EDH it's probably pretty bonkers
You should make a Top 10 Creatures Whose Names are Their Types.

hmm the only thing I can think of is fatal push targetting an illusion that costs more than 4 lol
It seems like it comes up more often than you would think, though. Like, putting a +1/+1 counter on target creature, or target creature can't block this turn, etc.
I expected Meloku to be number 2 at least. Surprising.
Shoutout to Mesmerizing Benthid for being my first mythic Rare, and for having the best token ever.
Awesome video
Thanks!

Hasn't he already made one?
Already did it
Top 10 Tricks ;)
Narcomoeba was standard legal with dredge for a short while but no points?

Before the top ten. I hope my boy Meloku makes it
Then you'll be happy!
Phantasm dreadmaw better be number 1 regardless of its score. It's a direct reference to the best card ever.
Sorry.
@@NizzahonMagic love your replies to my joke comments. Keep up the good work.
Where Phantasmal Dreadmaw? 😢
Due to the way the old Legend rule worked Phantasmal image could also destroy your opponents legendary creatures by copying them
I'm suddenly suffering a case of "Cranial Flatulence", but for the #2 Moeba, isn't it's ability belong to Red/Black cards?
Madness!
Just remembered, if you discard it, you can play it for a much cheaper price.
Is that it, right?
Discarding it doesn't trigger it's put into play ability. It must be removed from library to trigger. You are thinking of Squee, for discard bonuses
Madness doesn't have anything to do with Narcomoeba.
Also, there are plenty of Blue cards with Madness anyway.
Murmuring mystic looks like he is trying to find the key to get into Raya Lucaria academy.
This video should disappear from your Playlist one you watch it
Nice.
MTG top 10: Illusions. 1. That MTG is still a great game lol.
